Art X Fashion @ The Museum at FIT
Admission to the museum is free.
This exhibition will be on display from February 19 until April 19, 2026. If you cannot attend the opening, please stop in and see the show at your convenience. Call ahead for hours.
This exhibition is a comprehensive exploration of the symbiotic relationship between the world of fashion and fine art. Featuring more than 140 objects, including garments, accessories, textiles, photographs, and original artworks drawn from MFIT's permanent collection, *Art X Fashion* challenges the traditional hierarchies of visual culture, presenting fashion and art each as parallel, potent expressions of social, intellectual, and creative forces. Curated by Dr. Elizabeth Way, curator of costume and accessories at MFIT, the exhibition reflects MFIT's mission to advance the understanding and appreciation of fashion's critical role in culture.
The core of *Art X Fashion* lies in its profound engagement with the eternal question: "Is fashion art?" The exhibition explores the ways that fashion has always been a partner, not a follower, of fine art, highlighting typically overlooked integrations throughout history. This includes examples of how the two disciplines have worked together to create European styles, from the drama of Rococo and Neoclassical grandeur to the unsettling world of Surrealism, to the shock of Pop Art and postmodernism.

'Speakeasies of NYC: A Tale of Crime, Creativity, and Celebration' Webinar

Exactly 100 years ago, the unimaginable happened: alcohol of every kind was effectively banned in America. But for cities like New York City, a little ol' constitutional ban wasn't going to stop people from continuing to have fun — rather than shut down, the city's nightlife simply moved underground (literally and figuratively). This is the story of how illicit drinking spots known as speakeasies were born, and how they not only defined the "Roaring 20s" in New York, but ushered in social changes that are still felt a century later.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the history of speakeasies in New York City, and how the strict men's only drinking clubs of pre-1920s America were replaced with cosmopolitan watering holes where the only rule was to have fun.
Led by Sylvia Laudien-Meo — art historian, museum educator, and NYC tour guide — this virtual journey around NYC's speakeasies will include:
-An overview of the Temperance Movement, from the series of events that led to the 18th Amendment in 1920, to the complex effects it had on NYC's social life, to creative ways people worked around it
-The rise and proliferation of the Speakeasy — while it created new trouble in American society like bootlegging and organized crime, it also paved the way for a burgeoning of gifted entertainers and the women's social liberation movement
-A closer look at some of the most infamous NYC speakeasies , including Lansky's Lounge and Chumley's, larger dance halls like the Stork's Club or 300 Club, and secret beer caves in the Bronx
-How speakeasies kept their operations hush-hush, from quietly transporting booze to their bars, to escape routes and tunnels, to tricks they used to hide their illicit operations in case they were raided
-Suggestions on today's best speakeasies in NYC , both original and revival
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions about New York's speakeasies are welcomed and encouraged!
Can't make it live? Don't worry, you'll have access to the full replay for one week!
See you there, virtually!
\*Immediately upon registering, you will receive a separate, automated email containing the link to join this webinar
\*\*For the best possible viewing experience, please ensure you're using the latest version of your internet browser — Google Chrome is the most compatible. Exact technical requirements and a webinar user guide will be shared in the automated confirmation email upon registration.
\*\*\*A full replay of the experience will be available to all registered guests for up to a week

**Description**
This talk, from the perspective of speech pathologists who specialize in communication language, focuses on strategies and perspectives that support all people, with or without a clinical or therapeutic background, in meaningfully engaging with individuals who are non-speaking or minimally-speaking to uplift and celebrate their unique personalities as well as provide space and opportunity for autonomy, self-expression, and connection with others.
They'll provide an overview of total communication to broaden understanding of how all individuals use different forms of communication depending on our anatomy, physiology, cognition, preferences, and personality, as well as how we may code-switch depending on the setting, context, and our current state.
The importance of being an informed and welcoming communication partner will be discussed to broaden perspectives on the significance of human connection. They'll outline specific, language-based strategies and provide examples. Attendees will have an opportunity to practice self-awareness of their own preferred communication methods, handling discomfort when interactions may push those boundaries, and opening their minds to the idea that connection transcends speech!
We'll cover:
* What is AAC? (Many different forms)
* Strategies such as attributing meaning and verbal referencing
* Following someone's lead
* Partner-Assisted Scanning (PAS)
* Expressive, receptive, and social language

Food For Thought (F4T)
Food For Thought (F4T) is a friendly weekend brunch for people who enjoy discussing serious and "serious" topics with other smart, engaging people. We welcome everyone, whether you are a card-carrying philosopher or are maybe not quite sure who Plato was. The only qualification you need is that you enjoy thinking and eating and can do both at the same time! The F4T Brunch meets on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. We will have a new suggested topic each month, though wandering off topic is also allowed! (Good luck trying to stop that from happening.) These will span Science, Philosophy, Politics, History, Economics, and more. Attendees will be invited to propose the topic for the next brunch.
We are a friendly group but we must restrict attendance to 12 members so we can all participate in a common conversation. And if you sign up, we expect you to show up! Two no-shows and you will be blocked from attending.
To keep up-to-date on CFI-NYC events you should sign up for our monthly newsletter. Go to https://cfi-nyc.org/ and at the lower right click on Receive E-Mails.

Imagine walking into a room and instantly spotting people you already have something in common with—before you even say a word. That’s what makes our Glow Party such a fun, relaxed way to meet people in NYC.
Join up to 100 friendly members and guests from a variety of social groups for a night designed to make coming solo feel comfortable, natural, and fun. Whether you’re looking to make friends, expand your social circle, network, or simply enjoy a great night out, this event is all about connection—your way.
Finally a party where you will meet others who are interested in the same things as you before you even say a word! This a fun and unique way to navigate the social scene! We use our glow bracelet color coding system as just one of the ways for you to identify and instantly connect with others who have the same interests as you!
How it works:
**We will have 6 different colored glow bracelets at the check in table. Each bracelet represents something that you are interested in (Green=outdoor activities, Red=singles events, Blue=arts/culture, Yellow=travel, etc). You will choose up to 3 colors that best represent things that interest you.**
What to expect:
* **Tri-state professionals looking to mix, mingle, and connect**
* **We will have a private area reserved exclusively for our party**
* **Ice breaker games with prizes**
* **Our color coded system for finding like minded people**
* **Hosts on hand to welcome you and introduce you to others**
* **Music played at conversational levels**
* **Full food & drink menu available including speciality drink specials**
FAQs:
**Can I come alone?** Most come on their own. If you don't know anyone, the ice-breakers will help you meet others. Come alone or bring a friend - either way you'll feel comfortable and have a great time.
**How many members will be attending?** This is a multi-Meetup group event. This page only shows a very small portion of the actual attendees.
**Is there a dress code?** No hats, sweats, t-shirts etc. Jeans ok.
**Ages?** All welcome 21 and over.
