Talk with Google Design Lead Gabe Ferreira: AI and the creative process
Talk with Google Design Lead Gabe Ferreira: AI and the creative process
We’re excited to welcome a new speaker to our next Design Talk: Gabe Ferreira, Design Lead at Google. In his talk, Gabe will talk about AI and the creative process. AI represents the most disruptive moment the creative industry has seen since the popularization of the internet. Processes, expectations, output, and possibilities have changed (and will continue to change) quickly and dramatically; for the worse when AI is used carelessly, potentially for the better when applied thoughtfully. Organized in 6-10 (short) chapters and 2 (even shorter) intermissions, the talk will go over tools, projects, observations and predictions that inform, prepare, and provoke. Here is a preview of what you can expect: 1. How studios are using GenAI (examples from real world projects) 2. When is it ok to use GenAI in your creative projects? (with examples) 3. Good and Bad GenAI ads I’ve seen, and why … and how certain brands are reacting/pushing back. 4. 2 paths forward as a creative (many jobs will be lost, some new ones will surface) 5. Artists exploring GenAI as a new medium After the talk, we’ll hang out and enjoy some drinks and snacks! 🗓️ January 21st, 7 PM 📍 Bau, Carrer de Pujades, 118, Sant Martí, 08005 Barcelona 🎟️ Free Anyone taking part in the event agrees that the organizer accepts no liability. By participating in the event, you also agree to videos and pictures being taken for later publication online. See you soon, designer friends! 🫶

Women Who Tech & Read: 📚 Brotopia by Emily Chang
Women Who Tech & Read: 📚 Brotopia by Emily Chang
Join **Women Who Tech & Read,** Barcelona’s first English-speaking, women-only book club dedicated entirely to women in tech. A space to explore **non-fiction by women in tech** and learn to thrive in male-dominated environments in 2026—especially as conservative politics increasingly shape the tech industry. Buy the book, read it at your own pace, and then come hang out and discuss it with other women in tech in Barcelona! You can find the book at Backstory English Bookshop: https://www.backstorybookshop.com/ * We’re kicking things off in January with: 📚 ***Brotopia* by Emily Chang**. A sharp, eye-opening dive into the history of Silicon Valley’s “boys’ club”; how it all started, why tech became tied to the stereotypical male nerd, and the early women who decided to push back against that culture. It lays out the roots of the problem so we can see how we ended up here today.*“De aquellas polvos, estos lodos,”* as we’d say in Spanish. * Please read the book in December, so we can meet in early January to discuss it and share our experiences.

Mystics, tech nerds and the Simulation Hypothesis. Reality might not be real.
Mystics, tech nerds and the Simulation Hypothesis. Reality might not be real.
What if the ancient mystics were right all along, and modern technology is finally catching up? In this session we'll explore the Simulation Hypothesis: the idea that our reality might be a simulation. We are using Rizwan Virk's book partly as a source for this session. We'll look at the convergence between Eastern philosophy (Maya, the Buddhist concept of illusion), Western philosophy (Plato's Cave, Descartes' demon), quantum physics, and video game technology. Whether you find the idea compelling or absurd, it's an interesting lens through which to examine what we mean by "reality". This session will be led by Amelia and James. This is a repeat event. If you went to the session on 16 Jan then please don't sign up for this one. Bring wine/beer/drinks/food/snacks/whatever if you want to. **Our events fill up very quickly. Come for the coffee and company, or just bring a book to read while surrounded by other in-real-life, community-seeking humans. Come by every Friday, or just when you happen to be in town. Make it whatever you need it to be that week. It's not an \*event\* per se, but we hope these Friday meet-ups can become a fixture of the bookshop! Gathering spot will be in the downstairs area of the bookshop (near the Community Library). Coffee and tea are 1.50€ and can be purchased at the cash register upstairs. Drunken Philosophy: Is Life a Dream? Is Life a Simulation?
Drunken Philosophy: Is Life a Dream? Is Life a Simulation?
Welcome to Drunken Philosophy, a casual, curious, social discussion club. Optional topic for this meet up: Is life a dream? Is life a simulation? Dreams feel real while they last. Could life work the same way? How do we know we’re awake, and what follows if we can’t be sure? Let’s kick that around over a around of drinks: • What makes something feel real: continuity, shared evidence, or meaning? • How do we know we're not in a simulation? • How would you tell you’re awake (reality checks, memory, other people)? • If life is dreamlike, what becomes of free will and responsibility? • Is identity a story we keep telling—who’s the narrator? • Are we author, actor, or audience in our dreams and how would you tell? • Does art/film reveal reality or replace it? No lectures. Friendly crowd. Drop in for one drink and stay if it’s fun.

Memento
Memento
A Must See movie by Christopher Nolan! How can you reconstruct the past if you can't remember it? Leonard Shelby, an amnesiac, must do precisely that but so do we as viewers because much of the movie is told backwards. Nolan uses every cinematic trick in the book to help us see things as Shelby sees it. Widely acclaimed, we hope you will too!

How to Take Control of YOUR Mental Health
How to Take Control of YOUR Mental Health
It’s time to take control of your mental health. How do you get rid of stress, anxiety and uncertainty? These emotions are buried deep in your reactive mind. Find out what the reactive mind is, and in the process find yourself. Here is the secret of being positive and free: Thinking positively is not enough. You also have to get rid of the negative thinking. Your mind is like a garden. You can plant many beautiful flowers in it, but if you don't get rid of the weeds when you plant your flowers, the weeds will soon take over the whole garden. A positive thought is like a flower in your mental garden, and a negative thought is like a weed. You cannot expect to have a positive mindset if you continue to have negative thoughts dwelling and growing there. So, how do you get rid of the negative thoughts? That's what this Meetup is all about. Attend this local meeting and find out! The Meetup event will be led by a consultant who had helped many people live happier in life. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is created by the Dianetics & Scientology life improvement center.
