JOIN OUR NEW SOCIAL MAHJONGG LEAGUE for weekly game play based on the NMJL (American-style) Mahjongg rules — PLUS some exciting and fun extras, such as more robust games, a completely new new scoring system, and the addition of the MAD JOKER, which can be used for any tile — even pairs and singles! The season consists of 8 weeks of sessions (1x a week) on Wednesdays from January 7 through February 25, 2026 Each session consists of 4 games, some with special themes and/or hands. Did you get new games for Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, Solstice, Saturnalia, Yaldā, or Koliada? If you did, try them out at the Grand Gaming Melee! If everyone else brings theirs too and also wants to try them out, well, please negotiate a playing sequence without turning this event into too much of a Melee. If you don’t have any new games you want to bring, come with some of your all-time favorites, or come without games and play some that others will bring; there’s always a wide variety available. If you’re intrigued by one you’re seeing for the first time, there’s bound to be someone eager to teach you. AARGGH trusts that even if you made a New Year’s resolution to cut back on calories, you’ll still need some sustenance during a full day of gaming. You are encouraged to bring something delicious to share, and by “delicious” we mean not fruitcake. Cookies, crackers, and pretzels are popular options, as are sodas and juices. Some people bring doughnuts, cupcakes, or other substantial sweets; these are always appreciated and disappear quickly. Healthy snacks of vegetables and fruit are welcomed by people who like to snack on vegetables and fruit, and the people who like them are often the same people who bring them. Official start time is 10:30am. You can come and go at any time, but your host appreciates anyone who arrives as early as 10:00am (the library’s opening time) to help with setup. Many hands make light work! Cleanup begins around 4:00pm (or whenever you decide that you can’t squeeze in one more game before the end of the event). Remember, whoever starts cleanup first gets the best choice of leftover snacks to take home! As always, leave the room clean and tidy. **Please observe these rules regarding cleanup at Beatley library:** * Please ensure that food scraps, crumbs, and bits of packaging are not strewn in the kitchen or auditorium. The library closes shortly after our event ends, so anything edible left on the floor or counters will attract vermin overnight. Night vermin are the worst! * Please fold most of the tables and stack them under the coat rack – a few may remain where they were used – but **DO NOT FOLD THE CHAIRS**. Leave them out in any configuration that lets people walk around them easily. Many chairs are needed for programs the following day, so by folding them you only make more work for the organizers. On the other hand, more than a few tables left standing only impede the next day’s activities.

*Betrayal at House on the Hill* is a popular horror-themed board game where 3-6 players explore a haunted mansion, building the map as they go, until a "Haunt" event turns one player into a traitor, flipping the game from cooperative to asymmetric, one-vs-many gameplay with different win conditions for the traitor and heroes. The current version is the 3rd Edition, featuring updated art, characters, and rules for 50 different scenarios (Haunts).

We will be playing **Heat: Pedal to the Metal** with up to 8 players. All experience levels welcome. Expect the game teach to start promptly within the first 10 minutes. **Heat: Pedal to the Metal** puts players in the driver's seat of intense car races, jockeying for position to cross the finish line first, while managing their car's speed if they don't want to overheat. Everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated, but not required. I just got mine. I don't want to get any of my friends sick! I will, however, be screening for a standard set of COVID symptoms. If you are showing any symptoms that could make people nervous, please postpone coming to the meetup till you're over it. While sneezing is not a COVID symptom, I think folks would rather not risk getting even a cold right now, so again please don't show up if this is the case, even if you're sure it is just an allergy. On the other hand, no masks are required, although feel free if it'd make you more comfortable. General day of games! Whatever folks feel like playing. Bring your own or learn a new one! If you want to play a longer game, you might want to propose it on the meetup discussion to judge interest. I'll have snacks and soda on hand. Additional snacks or soda welcome. We usually order out for dinner and then continue on till 10pm. The games we usually play tend towards those requiring more thinking than typical family or party games and they are usually in the 2-4 hour range.
