Pure Peru | Bucket List of Peru
Pure Peru | Bucket List of Peru
**Peru, oh Peru. You really do have to see it to believe it.** Open your eyes - you’re in Machu Picchu, the eternal city in the clouds, renowned as one of the seven wonders of the modern world. **It’s the kind of dream everyone should have at least once – preferably while awake.** **It may top bucket lists around the world, but Machu Picchu is just the beginning**. Peru is a country with over 10,000 years of history, once the proud seat of the Inca Empire. And long before the Incas, it was home to a series of ancient civilizations that left their marks, ones that we still marvel at today: Caral, the oldest city in the Americas; the tombs of Sipán; the giant Nazca lines only fully visible from the sky; and the mountain fortress of Kuélap. In Peru, the past isn’t hidden in museums. It’s carved into cliffs, etched in desert sands and hidden high on Andean ridges. Nature lovers, this one’s for you: Peru is also one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Out of the planet’s 117 known life zones, Peru has 84. That means you can go from dry, dusty desert to icy peaks to rainforests teeming with life, all in a single trip. **The Amazon River Basin alone could keep explorers busy for a lifetime, but let’s not forget the condors, llamas, alpacas or the surreal rainbow-striped slopes of Vinicunca, the Mountain of Seven Colors.** **And then there’s the food.** Once considered “just” local food, Peruvian gastronomy now has the world’s attention, with chefs turning ancient flavors into haute cuisine. Imagine potatoes in every possible color, the freshest ceviche, jewel-toned corn and a national love for pisco that turns every gathering into a party. Pair that with a rich living culture expressed through music, dance and traditional festivals, and you’ll find that Peru offers an atmosphere as vibrant and layered as its landscapes. **Machu Picchu: The Inca’s Enigma** At 2,400 meters above sea level, tucked away in the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu is the jewel of the Andes. Built without wheels, iron tools, or cement, its granite stones fit together so precisely you can’t even slip a credit card between them. Was it an astronomical observatory, or a royal retreat for Pachacuti, the Inca emperor with 150 children and possibly even more secrets? Was it built by an engineering genius, or as conspiracy enthusiasts like to claim, the handiwork of aliens? Take your pick – the mystery is half the fun. What we do know is this: the Spanish conquistadors never found Machu Picchu, which is why it survived as the best-preserved Inca city. Whether you arrive by train, bus or the legendary Inca Trail, nothing dulls the awe of standing among its terraces and temples, as clouds drift across the mountains. Some places are overhyped…but Machu Picchu isn’t one of them. The city rises from the Sacred Valley of the Urubamba, a fertile basin once central to Inca agriculture. Stretching nearly 150 kilometers, the valley gets just the right mix of sun, water, and breezes. No wonder the Incas carved terraces here that still cling to the slopes in perfect formation, turning steep mountainsides into productive farmland and picture-perfect landscapes all at once. Part of Machu Picchu’s magic is that no one really knows how it was built. Without wheels, draft animals, or cement, the Incas managed to shape and fit massive granite blocks with a precision that still baffles engineers today. Astronomical temples line up with the solstices, making the site part observatory, part sanctuary, part royal getaway – and entirely mind-blowing. (Theories about alien contractors are still optional.) Why the Incas abandoned such a masterpiece remains one of history’s enduring questions, especially as we still don’t know its exact purpose. Maybe it was Pachacuti’s summer palace, a spiritual sanctuary or even the Inca world’s version of a secret hideout. Some say it was left behind deliberately to protect it from the invading Spaniards. Whatever the truth, its temples – especially the famed Intihuatana, or “Hitching Post of the Sun” – still glow with mystery…and offer us a rare glimpse into a civilization that, for a moment, built a paradise in stone. **The Rainbow Mountain: Where Geology Went Wild** About 100 kilometers southeast of Cusco, at 5,200 meters above sea level, it looks as if a rainbow crash-landed into the Andes. The slopes and peaks of Vinicunca, the Mountain of Seven Colors, dazzle with stripes of red, turquoise, lavender and gold, thanks to mineral sediments dating back millions of years. Only revealed about 10 years ago, due to a melting glacial, it has already become one of Peru’s most photographed icons. It seems that nature still has surprises up its sleeve! **Lake Titicaca: Myths on the Water** Then there’s Lake Titicaca, straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia, its sparkling waters sitting at nearly 3,900 meters above sea level. Fun fact: It’s both the largest lake in South America and the highest navigable lake in the world. Even more interesting? According to legend, Titicaca is the birthplace of the sun itself. The Aymara people say the creator god Viracocha rose from these waters to bring light and humanity into the world. The Incas believed their first ruler, Manco Cápac, emerged here too. This is a place with legends and mysteries at every turn, and one its most intriguing concerns an ancient city known as Wanaku, or the City of Spirits, which is supposedly submerged somewhere in Titicaca’s chilly waters. Apparently, Wanaku was an important cultural and spiritual center, before a great earthquake struck and it was swallowed by the lake, leaving no trace. Still more exciting are the rumors of Inca gold that have long sparked the imaginations of treasure hunters around the world. Legends speak of riches sunk beneath the lake’s waters to keep them safe from the Spanish conquistadors. No one has struck it rich (yet). But through the years, Titicaca has continued to reveal its secrets – for example in the 1970s, when Jacques Cousteau explored the lake and discovered giant, never-before-seen frog species in its depths. Gold may be elusive, but most visitors would agree that the true treasure is the lake itself. Scattered across its vast surface are islands which indigenous communities call home, both those using the pre-Inca language of Aymara and Quechua, the official language of the Incas. On Titicaca’s Peruvian side, floating islands made of reeds – home to the Uros people – bob gently in the water. Further out, Amantani and Taquile islands welcome visitors into traditional communities where, over centuries, their resourceful people learned to make the most of their surroundings and live in harmony with nature. And in case you’re wondering about the name: ask a Peruvian and a Bolivian who owns which part of Lake Titicaca’s name, and you’ll get two very different answers. In Quechua, *titi* means puma and refers to the lake’s shape. *Caca*, in Spanish, means…something less impressive. Since most travelers set sail from the Peruvian side, locals will cheerfully tell you the noble *titi* is theirs – and the other half belongs to Bolivia. **A World of Discoveries** Peru is so much more than a tick on the bucket list. It’s the Andes and the Amazon, Inca ruins and Spanish plazas, mystery and myth, ceviche and pisco…the softness of alpacas, rainbows painted onto mountains and temples that touch the sky. And perhaps best of all, it’s the people…generous, resilient and proud to share their culture with anyone curious enough to discover it. Peru has fascinated travelers for centuries. Once you experience it, you’ll understand why. **Let’s go!** **Day 1 // ARRIVAL** Arrival in Lima, transfer from the airport to our hotel in the Miraflores neighborhood. In the evening, we’ll gather for a group dinner at the Larcomar Center to kick off the trip. **Day 2 // PARACAS** Breakfast and an early departure to make our way from Lima to Paracas, hopping on a boat to explore the largest peninsula in Peru. We’ll admire the famous "Candelabro" geoglyph and then head to the Ballestas Islands, spotting sea lions, Humboldt penguins, crabs, pelicans, cormorants, boobies and maybe even dolphins as we go. After about 2.5 hours we’ll return to port and continue to Ica, known for its wine production. We'll enjoy a tasting of wine, pisco and local liqueurs such as chirimoya. After the tasting, transfer to Nazca for dinner and overnight. **Day 3 // NAZCA** After breakfast we’ll head to Nazca airport for a flight over the famous Nazca Lines and geoglyphs – still a mystery to this day. During the 30-minute flight we'll marvel at these mysterious and incredible artworks and dive into the ocean of theories surrounding them. Then, we head to the Huacachina Oasis for a thrilling buggy tour through the Peruvian desert, the gateway to the Atacama. After a day of adventure, we return to Lima for overnight. **Day 4 // LIMA CITY TOUR** Today we explore the capital city of Peru. We’ll visit the famous Park of Love in our neighborhood, Miraflores, followed by a city center tour including Plaza San Martin, Plaza de Armas, the cathedral and the catacombs in the Church of San Francisco. After lunch, transfer to the airport for a domestic flight to Juliaca in southern Peru, near Lake Titicaca. From Juliaca, we transfer by bus to Puno and check into our hotel. **Day 5 // TITICACA** The lake of myths and legends, the great Titicaca, is calling us! We’ll embark on a boat trip to the famous Uros floating islands, made from Totora reeds. There, we will meet the community’s leader, who will explain how the islands are constructed, and what daily life is like there. We’ll continue to Taquile Island, to experience a showcase of local dress, music and dances. While we feast on a delicious lunch of local trout, we’ll learn more about life on this island, and the traditions which have been preserved for centuries. Those looking for souvenirs will have the chance to purchase some local handicrafts before we return to Puno. Optional evening outing to Los Balcones restaurant for a traditional dance show. **Day 6 // JOURNEY TO CUSCO** After breakfast we’ll hit the road to Cusco, making several stops along the way. First we’ll visit Pukara, home to award-winning Peruvian coffee, and then brave the La Raya high-mountain pass. A hearty lunch buffet will energize us before our visits to Raqchi Temple and the Church of Andahuaylillas, known as the Sistine Chapel of Peru. Later, arrival in Cusco and check-in at hotel. **Day 7 // SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS** Today we explore the famous Valle Sagrado (Sacred Valley of the Incas). We'll begin with the massive archaeological complex in Pisac, visiting the craft market where we'll have the opportunity to purchase various souvenirs, typical Peruvian clothing and other characteristic regional products. We'll head to a restaurant in Urubamba for lunch, where a buffet awaits us. In the afternoon we'll head to the very end of the Sacred Valley, to the town of Ollantaytambo, where we'll visit the beautiful archaeological complex. Afterward, we'll head to the train station to board the train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) for our overnight stay. **Day 8 // MACHU PICCHU** After fueling up for a day of discovery, we’ll hop on a local bus and head to one of the wonders of the world – the famous Machu Picchu. We'll also climb to the summit of one of the most important Apu Picchus, where the most important ceremonies and rituals took place. We'll be treated to one of the most beautiful views of Machu Picchu below and a panoramic view of the surrounding peaks – including Apu Salkantay, weather permitting. After exploring the complex, we'll head to Aguas Calientes for lunch and return to our hotel in Cusco. **Day 9 // CUSCO CITY TOUR** This morning we’ll take a tour of the high-altitude city of Cusco, taking in sights such as Plaza de Armas, its largest and most important square, and the famous Coricancha – the site of Inca gold, where Inca rulers were crowned and their mummies were kept. From there, we will visit Saqsayhuaman, a monumental 15th century Inca fortress and ceremonial complex located on a hill overlooking the city, and then Quenquo, where mummifications were performed. We will have lunch at a restaurant in Cusco and then transfer to the airport for our return flight to Lima. **Day 10 // RAINBOW MOUNTAIN** We’ll start the day enjoying a scenic drive with a local breakfast on the way, before hitting a short trail to Rainbow Mountain, soaking in the stunning colors around. Practical Philosophy Meetup - Dubai 🇦🇪
Practical Philosophy Meetup - Dubai 🇦🇪
**🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?** Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎 Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic. The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌 **📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?** Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CdjwVxcf2EO6vcLWUhaIdk?mode=ems_copy_c), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going. When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture. **General Meeting Agenda** Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline: * 17:00-17:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the official start. * 17:15-17:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines. * 17:25-18:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them. * 18:45-19:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo. * 19:00 - The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other. **🧧PRICING?** Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend! We just ask that if we are meeting in a café, buy a beverage! Some chapters rent a space for us to meet, and they may ask for donations to help contribute to the cost of rent. Donations will always be 100% voluntary though! **💛 WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY** **🗣** “I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” - Ekam 🗣 “I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” - Daniel **🤓 FAQ** * **What will we talk about? What's the topic?** The topic for the week is shared every Sunday in the Whatsapp group. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you don’t see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CdjwVxcf2EO6vcLWUhaIdk?mode=ems_copy_c). * **Do I need to study or read anything to attend?** No preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it, but it's not required. * **Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?** The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school. * **Is it mostly men that attend?** Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms. * **Can I come alone?** Of course you can, we encourage it :) * **Can I be late?** Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation. * **Where do you meet?** The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CdjwVxcf2EO6vcLWUhaIdk?mode=ems_copy_c) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/). 🤝**POLICY** To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment. **PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY CLUB - Making Philosophy Available To All ✨** Practical Philosophy hosts weekly, in-person meetups in over 20 countries, including Canada, Spain, Japan, Mexico and many more! 🗺️ **\*\*\*** **Join our [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CdjwVxcf2EO6vcLWUhaIdk?mode=ems_copy_c) 👈** **Follow us on [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/practicalphilosophyclub/) 👈** **Our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/) 👈**

Twin Green | Journey Across Sao Tome and Principe via Ghana
Twin Green | Journey Across Sao Tome and Principe via Ghana
**Welcome to the unknown paradise!** From waterfalls in the middle of the jungle to banana-shaped beaches passing through a national park , these islands of the Gulf of Guinea boast of being one of the least visited places on the planet and of being that exotic destination and **Paradise that you thought you could only dream of**. It is the part of land closest to the center of the planet - coinciding with the passage of the Equator and very close to the zero meridian. Are you coming on a trip to a country so unusual that few manage to locate it on the map? São Tomé marvels with their **Portuguese colonial mix**, beaches and the laid-back atmosphere in the Gulf of Guinea. To define themselves, Santotomenses use a very graphic expression, derived from Portuguese: they are leve-leve. That is, calm, relaxed. And it is that relaxation seems to preside over this country that is both the center and the end of the world. **It is not a tourist destination at all,** despite how much it has to offer like wild postcard beaches. A very important portion of virgin forest, declared a Biosphere Reserve, with the Ôbo Natural Park as the main banner, numerous cocoa plantations or coffee (known as roças). A country with dazzling landscapes with incredible volcanic chimneys emerging in the middle of nowhere, a huge number of endemic animal and plant species, as well as others such as sea turtles, birds and whales, which are part of the objective of many nature lovers visiting the country. The small country exhibits the traces of a troubled history that began when two Portuguese navigators landed in 1470 in this then deserted site. A story that is revealed to those who wander the streets of the capital (which is called, like the island, Santo Tomé). The parallel architectures of this tiny city summarize the history of the country: some old wooden huts evoke the initial time, when the islands were populated by slaves brought from the mainland. Some colonial buildings with large wooden balconies recall the five centuries of colonization. Uniform, greyish apartment blocks hark back to the era of real socialism, from independence in 1975 to the political and economic liberalization of the early 1990s. Meanwhile, a few ultramodern buildings made of large glass point to the future. The engine of the country's wealth and today constitutes one of its great cultural and tourist attractions: **las roças**. If it weren't for the insidious humidity, the visitor could have the sensation of landing on some sugar plantation in the Brazilian northeast: the same buildings with a colonial flavor, the same atmosphere of an old decayed empire. Also its train to transport the merchandise, as some old rails recall. **The most incredible landscapes on this side of the equator**, with various reminiscences of films such as Jurassic Park, King Kong as well as others in which the jungle is the setting. To top it off with a tropical fruit market, canoes with freshly caught fish, the smiles of the happy people of the islands and a veritable swarm of children jumping into the river to play as if there were no tomorrow. São Tomé and Príncipe will fill many blank pages on your adventure notebook. **MAY 24** Departure to Accra, connecting flight to STP. **MAY 25** Lagoa Amelia hike 3hrs, Almada Negreiros, story of chocolate, Cacau Espace. **MAY 26** Colonial rocas, past and present. **MAY 27** Waterfall and channels crossing. **MAY 28** Santana Islet, overnight at beach resort. **MAY 29** Rolas Islet, departure to Accra. **MAY 30** Relax by the pool and departure home. **Activities:** jungle trekking, swimming, boating, sightseeing. **Accommodation & meals:** 4 star comfy forest lodge + seaside eco-lodge, hotel in Ghana - double sharing. Most of (fine) meals included, meals on transfers (Ghana). **Cost: AED 8370 AED** all incl. flights to Sao Tome from Accra (Ghana). Flights to Ghana from your location excluded. **Cost valid until MAY 20.** Past this date please inquire about cost and availability. **Emirates DXB - ACC** at approx. 3500 AED. **Specifically excluded:** flights to Ghana, visas if any, meals in Ghana. **Visas:** Sao Tome: entry permit + visa payable on arrival, Ghana transit visa on arrival. *It is participant sole responsibility to assure admission to country of destination.* See yah in Green xx Trekkup Crew [Whatsapp 050484823](https://wa.me/971504848238) / [info@trekkup.com](info@trekkup.com) [Find all trekkups at linktr.ee/trekkup](https://linktr.ee/trekkup)

Lemur Trails | Journey Across West Coast of Madagascar
Lemur Trails | Journey Across West Coast of Madagascar
Picture a setting sun tinging the **sky with hues of red, purple, and orange, the mighty baobab striking a squat pose against the sky,** its plump trunk leading up to a few delicate flinger-like branches, making for one mystical sight. One Arabian legend says the devil plucked up the baobab, thrust its branches into the Earth, and left its roots in the air. A tree so distinctive they named it twice! Easily recognized by their swollen base at the trunk which gives the tree a bottle-like appearance. They can be **as short as 5 meters to as tall as 12 meters with the bottle-trunk up to 5 meters in diameter**. With blooms in the spring of large white flowers which only open at night, these ancient trees have many tales to tell, given **their estimated age up to 2,000 years!** **Few places on Earth offer such an intense kaleidoscope of nature** as Madagascar, from fertile hills cascading with terraced rice paddies, forests of every kind from wet & rainy to dry and spiny, and a laterite-rich soil which gives the country it’s nickname of “Red Island”. With thousands of kilometres of coastline, the sea is never very far, turquoise and idyllic, dangerous and mysterious, big adventure on the world’s fourth largest island. There is no other place on Earth where you’ll find more **lemurs because they’re only found in Madagascar!** Endemic to the island and evolved from monkeys and apes, they once were as large as the male gorilla! **There are now over 100 species of lemurs**, in all shapes and sizes, from the pygmy mouse lemur to the long-tailed Indri. And while the signature animal of Madagascar is the Lemur, there are many weird and wonderful creatures, from the eerie-looking **fossa-fossa (a cat-dog crossover)**, **colourful and camouflaged chameleons**, oddly shaped insects, vivid frogs, graceful rays and turtles, several species of sharks, and humpback whales during the winter months. **Madagascar, from East to West, from Lemur to Boabab, on the road, the river, and the sea!** [https://vimeo.com/292618272](https://vimeo.com/292618272) [https://vimeo.com/194405246](https://vimeo.com/194405246) [https://vimeo.com/224965822](https://vimeo.com/224965822) **Let's go!** **Day 1 – Arrival in Tana, transfer to Antsirabe** Arrival, immigration procedure. Drunken Philosophy: What’s up with all the AI hate?
Drunken Philosophy: What’s up with all the AI hate?
**Welcome to Drunken Philosophy** a casual, curious social discussion **Optional topic for this meetup: What's up with all the AI hate?** A recent survey found that 74% of Americans have a negative view of AI, and I want to know why. Come out and debate whether AI is good or bad. My hot take: a labor-saving tool that could potentially help cure cancer gets called dangerous because it might raise unemployment or cause a speculative investment bubble, that tells you a lot more about capitalism and the economic system we live under than it does about the tool itself. As a computer programmer, I think AI is a wonderful tool that has increased my productivity by at least an order of magnitude. I'd go so far as to say Claude Code is the best tool I have ever used. Debate me and name a better one. Is AI potentially dangerous? Yes, but so are a lot of tools. Chainsaws. Steam engines (early ones would occasionally explode and kill everyone in the room). Do you think cavemen sat around debating whether fire could be used as a weapon or for self-harm, and decided not to discover it? I have two friends who hate AI for opposite reasons: one thinks it's a fad and not useful, and the other thinks it's going to take over everything and cause human extinction. Come out tonight, have a friendly debate, and make some friends. No lectures. Friendly crowd. Drop in for one drink and stay if it's fun.

Trails & Ales! Blendon Woods Metro Park / Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery
Trails & Ales! Blendon Woods Metro Park / Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery
**History** The history of [Blendon Woods Metro Park](https://www.metroparks.net/parks-and-trails/blendon-woods/) began long before its 1951 opening, rooted in a landscape of rugged ridges and deep ravines that made the land unsuitable for traditional farming. In 1945, a report proposing a metropolitan park system for Franklin County specifically highlighted these cliffs of Bedford Shale as some of the "wildest land in the vicinity". Following this recommendation, the recently formed park district purchased the first 229 acres in early 1949. Because the terrain was so uneven, developers had to cut a mile-and-a-half-long roadway through dense woods just to bring in heavy equipment. This initial preservation effort ensured that the mature second-growth hardwood forests remained largely untouched by the urban expansion spreading toward Westerville. Opening day arrived on Labor Day, September 3, 1951, marking Blendon Woods as the second park in the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system. The final push to open was a frantic race; the State Highway Department only finished the primary gravel access road four days before the gates opened. Early staff members, consisting of just four full-time employees, had to hand-dig pit toilets and learn construction skills on the fly to build the first picnic shelters. Despite the dusty conditions and limited facilities, the park was an immediate success, drawing massive crowds from across Central Ohio. By the end of the 1950s, annual visitation had already climbed to over 190,000 people. As the surrounding suburbs grew in the 1960s, the park faced severe overcrowding that threatened its natural habitats. In response, Franklin County voters passed the first Metro Parks levy in 1960, providing the funds necessary for a decade of steady expansion. During this era, the park nearly doubled in size, growing from 264 acres to over 570 acres by 1968. Planners also addressed a critical water shortage by collaborating with the U.S. Soil and Conservation Service to build a lake in 1964. This body of water originally served as a temporary reservoir before its role shifted toward conservation and wildlife support. The 1970s marked a transition toward the specialized wildlife and educational focus for which the park is known today. In 1971, the Walden Waterfowl Refuge was established around the 11-acre Thoreau Lake, creating a sanctuary that remains restricted to provide a quiet habitat for migratory birds. A formal nature center was also developed during this period, expanding on the guided Sunday walks that had been a park staple since the early 1950s. The park’s famous "Monarch Mansion" also became a prominent fixture, starting a long tradition of raising and releasing thousands of monarch butterflies each September. These initiatives cemented the park’s reputation as a premier destination for birders and nature enthusiasts. In more recent decades, Blendon Woods has continued to modernize while maintaining its wilderness character. The 10-acre Natural Play Area was added in 2017, encouraging kids to explore the ravines and woods off-trail. This was followed by the opening of a $1.5 million inclusive playground in April 2025, designed to accommodate children of all physical abilities. The nature center also underwent major renovations to include immersive, three-dimensional exhibits and a new butterfly house. Today, the park encompasses 653 acres, preserving a unique geologic and biological corridor amidst the bustling Westerville and Northeast Columbus area. **Map of the Park** Here is a map of [Blendon Woods](https://www.metroparks.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/BLN_map_Inclusive-Playground-and-Butterfly-Trail_May-2025_1980px.png). **Summary** For this event, we will hike the Lake View, Hickory Ridge, Ripple Rock, Overlook, Brookside, and Sugarbush Trails. This sounds like a lot, but it will really be only a little over five miles. Blendon Woods has a few hills here and there, but it's not one of the more strenuous metro parks. **Where We'll Meet** We'll meet just in front of the Nature Center. This is about a mile into the park from the main entrance. You have to go past the Ranger Station and the Shadblow Reservable Area to get to it, so don't stop too early at the Ranger Station and get it confused with the Nature Center. **After the Hike** Afterward, we will head over to [Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery](https://forbiddenroot.com/restaurants/columbus-ohio/) at Easton for [drinks](https://forbiddenroot.com/restaurants/columbus-ohio/#dinner-menu) and [food](https://forbiddenroot.com/wp-content/uploads/Cbus-Food.pdf). We should be there by 5 if you can't make the hike and just want to join us for drinks. The brewery's actual address is [4080 Worth Ave, Columbus, OH 43219](https://www.google.com/maps/place/4080+Worth+Ave,+Columbus,+OH+43219/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x88388a86d10b6619:0x4d42b470a5cf11d3?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111); however, I recommend pointing your GPS to the [Worth Garage](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Worth+Garage/@40.0542293,-82.9137962,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x88388b4df6082825:0x17582f0eccd9dda1!8m2!3d40.0542293!4d-82.9137962!16s%2Fg%2F11rzfvvv8b?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDQxNS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) across the street. Parking in this garage is free as long as you're not on the first floor, and it is literally right next to the brewery.
