Social Hike: Beethoven Hills + Seegrotte
Be inspired like Beethoven, who roamed these hills in 1814. After gathering at Vienna Main Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof) we'll catch a 20-minute train to a quaint municipality just outside Vienna. A short walk will lead us straight through town and up to its thick walled neo-Gothic church. There, we start our proper hike up and around this picturesque mountain with its token 12th-century castle, which also starred in Stephen Herek's "The Three Musketeers". Expect a lush pine forest, magnificent views and impressive medieval architecture.
But that's not all. Underway we'll also take a detour to the nearby Seegrotte, Europe's largest underwater lake. A mystical place brimming with history.
Price includes train tickets and friendly host. Entrance fee for the 1-hour Seegrotte guided tour and boat ride is \~EUR 18 (not included).
To secure your spots, please ...

KremsāDürnstein Panorama Loop: Spring Views & Castle Ruins
Hi everyone,
On **Sunday, April 5**, 2026, Iām planning a beautiful spring hike in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Wachau, following a scenic **circular route** **from Krems** via the Hohen Markstein, the Fesslhütte and the famous **castle ruins of Dürnstein**, before **returning to** **Krems**.
Along the way, we pass quiet natural areas, historic stone vineyard terraces, and enjoy wide panoramic views before returning to the charming town of Krems.
This hike is all about **walking, wide views, and enjoying the landscape together** ā with plenty of time for conversation, short breaks, and simply being outdoors.
**Fitness Note:**
Although we will walk at a relaxed pace, the hike requires moderate physical effort due to its length (about 18 km).
The trails themselves are not technically difficult, but a reasonable level of fitness is needed to comfortably complete the distance.
**Highlights**
š Beautiful walk from historic **Krems to Dürnstein** through classic Wachau vineyard scenery
šļø Charming old towns of **Krems and Stein** with narrow streets and centuries-old architecture
š° Visit the famous **castle ruins of Dürnstein**, where King Richard the Lionheart was once imprisoned
šø Late March to mid-April is peak season for the famous **Wachau Marillenblüte (apricot blossoms)**. With a bit of luck, weāll walk right through blooming apricot trees ā one of the most beautiful sights of spring in Austria
**Meeting Point & Travel**
š **Meeting point:** Franz-Josefs-Bahn station at **07:30 a.m.**, near the ticket machines to buy the group ticket. If you arrive too late for the group ticket you have to buy your own ticket individually, the best choice is likely the **VOR Freizeitticket**. Information regarding the tickets at the end of the post.
The train leaves at **08:00** from **Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof**. We will arrive in **Krems** at **09:08**.
**Hike Details**
**Duration:** Approx. 6.5 hours (pure walking time)
**Distance:** Approx. 18 km
**Elevation:** 300m up / 300m down
**Difficulty:** **Medium** (partly considered demanding due to the length)
More information on the trail:
https://www.bahn-zum-berg.at/waldviertel/fesslrunde-von-krems/
Trains back from Krems to Vienna run every hour.
**What to Expect**
Weāll walk together at a **relaxed, social pace**, staying as a group throughout the day.
This is **not a race or performance hike** ā the focus is on shared experience, conversation, and enjoying the landscape at an unhurried rhythm.
Weāll take regular short breaks whenever useful.
š„Ŗ We donāt plan to stop at huts or restaurants during the hike, so please bring your own snacks and drinks (at least **1.5 liters of water**).
š§ļø Weather can be changeable, so **basic rain protection is recommended**.
š„¾ Please wear **sturdy hiking shoes**. Some sections may be muddy, depending on the weather.
𦯠Trekking poles can be a great help for extra stability if we encounter any muddy patches.
Please note that **there are no public toilets on the trail itself**.
There is a public toilet in **Dürnstein** before we start the hike and another one in **Krems** at the end. If we are lucky, we may also pass an open **Heuriger** along the way.
**Important Notes**
ā ļø **Disclaimer:** As always, this is a free, private leisure activity. Iām not a certified hiking guide, and participation is at your own responsibility and risk.
I will send a **weather update on Thursday evening** to everyone registered.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Looking forward to sharing this **spring day in the Wachau** with you šø

**\*The "Einfach-raus" Group Ticket**
We will use a group ticket, and it requires some coordination:
**How it works:**
It is one ticket for a group of 2ā5 people.
We will form these groups at the meeting point at 07:30; please be on time if you want to participate.
You must travel together for both the departure and the return journey.
You cannot split off and take a different train home if you are on a group ticket.
**The cost:**
The more people in a group, the cheaper it gets.
Expect to pay between ā¬10 and ā¬19 per person.
To be fair, we can either pay by specific group size or pool all the money and split it equally.
**Cash is mandatory:**
Please bring physical cash and coins.
We need to collect the money before buying the tickets to make sure everyone gets their change back quickly.
**Information regarding this ticket:**
[https://www.oebb.at/en/tickets-kundenkarten/freizeit-urlaub/einfach-raus-ticket](https://www.oebb.at/en/tickets-kundenkarten/freizeit-urlaub/einfach-raus-ticket)
If you prefer not to be tied to a group, or if you arenāt sure when you want to head back to Vienna, do not join the group ticket.
Instead, buy the VOR Freizeitticket; it costs ā¬19.90 for the day in Lower Austria.
This will also be your option if you arrive too late for the group ticket or one group doesn't have enough participants for a group ticket.

One small final note:
Please avoid to take justice in your hands. If someone is talking bad, complaining, insulting someone, faulting on purpose or kicking, just please let the organizers know. Measures will be taken. I promise you. Responding the same way, fighting or leaving the pitch is not an option and usually is not solving the problem. Actually, creates other problems. Thank you.

Kick-off event- Film screening from Sudan, and cultural exhibition
We warmly invite you to our **Kick-off Event: Film Screening & Cultural Exhibition**, organized by *Medizin- und Nothilfe für Sudan e.V.* in collaboration with the **Office for Antiracism Work (ĆH University of Vienna)**.
We will be showing the film Tajouj (1977), which is set in eastern Sudan a hundred years ago. The kick-off event also includes a cultural exhibition featuring Sudanese products.
The war in Sudan began on April 15, 2023, due to political tensions and the refusal of the RSF militia to integrate into the national army. Since then, over 14 million people have been displaced. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in Sudan continues to commit crimes against civilians, forced evictions, looting and robbery, beatings, rape, and sexual harassment. The brutal genocidal war in Alfashir 11 in 2025 after the RSF militia conquered the Darfur region. The RSF militia took over the Darfur region in November 2025. The war is currently also concentrated in Kordofan, violence against civilians and women continues. In addition, there are drone attacks from RSF-Miliz on other regions in Sudan, targeting electricity and water supplies as well as fuel depots.
Over 50% of hospitals have been destroyed or are out of service, and the RSF militia has used schools, hospitals, and residential buildings as military bases. Furthermore, there is a shortage of medicines, supply chains have been disrupted, and health facilities have been largely destroyed.
Our Association for Medicine and Emergency Aid for Sudan is committed to supporting healthcare initiatives and emergency relief throughout Sudan. This year, we are running a dialysis aid project and combating infectious diseases such as dengue fever and cholera in Sudan.
We warmly invite you to attend our kick-off event, learn more about Sudan, our new organisation, and share ideas and discussions on how we can support Sudan.

Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
