Tokyo Story (1953): Family, Time, and the Quiet Pain of Modern Life
We invite you to take part in a shared cinematic experience built around reflection, atmosphere, and meaningful conversation.
**Tokyo Story** by **Yasujirō Ozu** is one of the great classics of Japanese cinema, a quiet and deeply moving film about family, time, distance, and the emotional changes brought by modern life. The story follows an elderly couple who travel from their hometown to Tokyo to visit their adult children. Although their children are polite, they are also busy, distracted, and unable to give their parents the attention and care they had hoped for.
Rather than relying on dramatic conflict, the film unfolds through small gestures, silences, everyday conversations, and moments of emotional restraint. Ozu creates a world where sadness, love, disappointment, and acceptance appear with extraordinary subtlety. The film asks us to reflect on generational change, the fragility of family bonds, loneliness, and the quiet dignity of ordinary lives.
More than a family drama, **Tokyo Story** is a profound meditation on human relationships and the passage of time. Its calm rhythm, precise compositions, and understated performances invite viewers to slow down and pay attention to what is often left unsaid. Each viewer may recognize something personal in the film: the distance between parents and children, the difficulty of expressing care, or the painful beauty of impermanence.

What is Playback?
- Real stories shared from real people spontaneously recreated on stage. Playback bears no giant promises, but it definitely is a genuine way to bond with others, explore artistry and sometimes (yes sometimes) crack open interesting truths about yourself and the world. **KREATIV UNTAPPED** is a creative playground born in Berlin – and we're kicking off with the discipline that sits at the heart of every other one: **storytelling.**
Because here's what AI can't replace: the human desire to create. Creativity is what makes us uniquely human — it's a muscle, and like any muscle, it needs training. Most of us have stopped.
**KREATIV UNTAPPED** is where we change that — through hands-on sessions with working practitioners across visual arts, tactile crafts, narrative & sound, and spatial & performative disciplines.
**This evening** is about words, voice, and presence. In a world full of decks, dashboards and screens, we've forgotten how to just… tell a story. This evening is a practice in putting the slides away and using the oldest tools we have — your voice, your hands, your story.
**Expect a short provocation from Ben, a hands-on session with a sketching element to flex that creative muscle, a round of group sharing, and time to actually meet the people in the room.**
**Who's this for?** Anyone with a story to tell — and the willingness to tell it without a slide deck.
No job title. No prior experience. Just the willingness to tap in.
*Creativity untapped. Connection for real.*

**About [Ben Sauer](https://bensauer.net)**
Ben Sauer is a speaker, author, and coach who teaches the art of strategic storytelling — and the perfect person to launch this series.
He's the author of **Death by Screens: How to Present High-Stakes Digital Design Work and Live to Tell the Tale** — a go-to resource for designers, product people and creatives who want to stop boring their audiences and actually be heard.
Ben spent years as a UX designer at Clearleft (one of the first UX agencies in the world, working with the BBC, Penguin Random House and Tesco), then as Director of Product for AI at Babylon Health, leading a team of 100 on products worth $100m+. He has trained teams at NASA, Amazon, and the BBC, and spoken at The Economist, NEXT Conference, UX London, VW + Audi and dozens more — frequently as the audience's top-rated speaker.
His background doesn't fit neatly in a single box: comedy, software, English literature. Which is exactly why he's so good at this.

Drunken Philosophy: What’s up with all the AI hate?
**Welcome to Drunken Philosophy** a casual, curious social discussion
**Optional topic for this meetup: What's up with all the AI hate?**
A recent survey found that 74% of Americans have a negative view of AI, and I want to know why. Come out and debate whether AI is good or bad.
My hot take: a labor-saving tool that could potentially help cure cancer gets called dangerous because it might raise unemployment or cause a speculative investment bubble, that tells you a lot more about capitalism and the economic system we live under than it does about the tool itself. As a computer programmer, I think AI is a wonderful tool that has increased my productivity by at least an order of magnitude. I'd go so far as to say Claude Code is the best tool I have ever used. Debate me and name a better one.
Is AI potentially dangerous? Yes, but so are a lot of tools. Chainsaws. Steam engines (early ones would occasionally explode and kill everyone in the room). Do you think cavemen sat around debating whether fire could be used as a weapon or for self-harm, and decided not to discover it?
I have two friends who hate AI for opposite reasons: one thinks it's a fad and not useful, and the other thinks it's going to take over everything and cause human extinction.
Come out tonight, have a friendly debate, and make some friends.
No lectures. Friendly crowd. Drop in for one drink and stay if it's fun.
Must See Thursday: I LOVE BOOSTERS at the Drexel + GRAETER'S!
Join us as we get together to see the top-reviewed comedy-drama, I LOVE BOOSTERS! The film comes from writer/director Boots Riley and follows a group of shoplifters who take aim at a cutthroat fashion maven. Here are details, trailers and our plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: The film follows a group of shoplifters who take aim at a cutthroat fashion maven. It is written/directed by Boots Riley (Sorry to Bother You) and stars Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, Taylour Paige, Poppy Liu, Eiza González, LaKeith Stanfield, Will Poulter, Don Cheadle, and Demi Moore.
BUZZ AND ACCLAIM: I Love Boosters was the opening film at this year’s SXSW Festival and premiered to rave reviews! It is currently earning a tremendous 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes where critics call it, “an unexpected celebration of friendship, community, and solidarity.” Others call the film “an exercise in radical empathy,” a “masterful” and “optimistic” film designed to “provoke discussion” while making the audience laugh.
TRAILER: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4lPRISgr9c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4lPRISgr9c)
SUMMER OF ICE CREAM: GRAETER’S! Established way back in 1870 in Cincinnati, this historic, family-owned brand is famous for their delicious small batch ice cream and any chocolate chunk flavors! They are currently the only commercial ice cream maker using the French Pot method that they’ve been using since they first opened! Plus, those chocolate chunks, oh my goodness! Vegan options are available.
PLAN: We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing and will meet in the lobby area about 20 minutes before the show. Advance ticket purchase not required for this theater but Showtime and complete details will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer.
Look forward to seeing you there, Dan
