WTM Berlin x SPICED Academy: AI and Building a Tech career in Berlin
Women Techmakers Berlin and SPICED Academy are joining forces to host an evening focused on both building *efficient AI systems* and navigating the real challenges of building a *career in tech*—beyond just learning technical skills.
## Talks
Talk 1: Confidence Beyond Skills - What Really Holds Women Back in Tech Careers - by Marina Matveevskaia
Many women in tech keep investing in new courses, skills, and certifications, yet still feel stuck or “not ready enough” to take the next career step.
In this talk, we will look beyond technical competence and explore the less visible factors that often shape career growth much more strongly — such as self-trust, fear of visibility, internalized expectations, and the emotional impact of burnout or layoffs.
I will share common patterns I see in highly capable women and why “just improving skills” is often not the real barrier.
Participants will leave with new perspectives and simple reflection tools to better understand what is holding them back and how to move forward in a more sustainable and aligned way.
Talk 2: Efficient Agentic Systems - by Jane Waithira
Let Classical ML Do the Heavy Lifting, Let Agents Do the Thinking
There’s a temptation to throw an LLM at every problem—but the most effective systems take a different approach.
This talk explores how to combine deterministic, classical machine learning for predictable tasks with LLM-powered agents for reasoning and decision-making—so you can build systems that are fast, cost-effective, and reliable.
## Speakers
**Jane Waithira:**
Jane Waithira is an innovative, solution-oriented developer working in AI/ML, currently at SAP in Germany, where she integrates applied AI and GenAI for SAP's own cloud infrastructure. With over five years of experience building production AI systems, Jane has established her skillset in practical applications of ML and GenAI.
Her talk will provide attendees with a practical framework for building efficient agentic systems that combine deterministic classical ML with the flexibility of LLM-powered agents.

**Marina Matveevskaia:**

With over 14 years of experience in the IT industry, including leadership roles, she understands the unique pressures and challenges women face in fast-paced, male-dominated environments.
In her coaching practice, Marina focuses on burnout prevention, impostor syndrome, and career transitions, helping highly capable women build sustainable and fulfilling career paths. She also collaborates with the German Employment Agency (Arbeitsagentur) as an AVGS coach, supporting women in their return to the labour market.

Ultimate Frisbee in the Park - sunset sparkle
Hi everyone. We'll meet and play a relaxed game of ultimate in Volkspark Rehberge if the weather cooperates.
Our games focus on having great team play, where the teams work together to advance the disk down the field. It's more important to work well together as a team than have a few star players get a point with lucky shots. For this reason, players of all skill levels (especially those who have never played) are welcome to join
Bring plenty of water, shoes you can run in and comfortable clothing that can get a bit dirty.
Although we're an established group, newcomers are always welcome.
After the game we try to spend some time together and have fun.
Finding us: We meet in this big grassy area, it's a short bike ride from the subway stop Rehberge on the U6 or Amrumer Strasse on the U9. It can be a bit tricky to find the first time, so we've got a few methods to help out (don't trust the meetup map pin, it often shows some point in the park, not the exact spot where we are)
1. GPS: 52°32'54.9"N 13°19'51.0"E ; 52.548581, 13.330842
2. Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/xbZgaXzMSMt
3. the helpful picture here

*This event may also be photographed and/or video-recorded, and published on social media channels such as meetup and eventbrite.*
*By participating, you acknowledge and accept the risk of injury while playing Ultimate. Although adherence to the rules, proper equipment, and common sense reduce this risk, the risk of serious injury does exist; and, you willingly and freely assume all such risks.*
SU&W - XKölln Tuesday
Come along, grab a coffee, shut up, and write! We will do at least two sessions of each 45 minutes of writing and two breaks. We will start the first writing session at 10:45.
For space reasons we only allow a limited number of attendees, so please update your RSVP if you can't come. We'll probably be grouped around the large table in the back room's center. In the summer, also outside.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
Sonne & Tiefe
Duncan

…Or just want to get tips on where to find good Chinese food in Berlin?
Whatever the reason, come join us! The more the merrier: such is the Chinese way!
++++++++++++++++ New Website ++++++++++++++++
We have our own community website now. It's hosted in Germany with better privacy guidelines and allows us to have more features than we currently have here.
https://www.dragon-descendants.de/
Please think about registering there too and if you are awesome, use the RSVP function there too.
In the long run we do plan to migrate permanently to the new site.
++++++++++++++++ Our meetup structure ++++++++++++++++
Our meetup is relatively unstructured. Groups often form organically and evolve and move throughout the evening consisting of members learning Chinese/German, members who are fluent/native, and the rest who are here to socialize in whatever language they're comfortable with and jumping into whichever conversation they find themselves in.
We try our best to fulfil everyone's expectations so we can all benefit from the meetup and have a good time; if you have any suggestions or ideas (such as outings!) please don't hesitate to let us know! :)
+++ No time on Thursday's? +++
We meet every second Thursday, but we sometimes have other events, which are not regular and occur on different days/at different locations. Stay tuned for announcements!
Looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones :)

Paint with the Artist: Walk-In Painting & Gilding Workshop
Paint with the Artist ✨ Walk-In Acrylics & Gilding Workshop Presented by Creative Shapeshifters
Part of Art Spring Berlin – Open Studio Days, Atelierhaus Prenzlauer Promenade
Location: Prenzlauer Promenade 149 C, Floor 6,studio 662
Saturday 30 May \| 13:00–16:00
Sunday 31 May \| 13:00–16:00
For Open Studio Days and Art Spring Berlin, Creative Shapeshifters opens its studio not only as an exhibition space, but also as a shared space for making, experimenting, and painting together.
Join me for a relaxed walk-in painting workshop inspired by my practice as a visual and transdisciplinary artist. This is an open process rather than a fixed class — you can arrive at any point between 13:00 and 16:00, stay for as long as you wish, and become part of a shared painting space.
Throughout the afternoon, I’ll be painting alongside everyone while sharing techniques and materials from my own artistic practice. We’ll explore acrylic painting, mixed media processes, and especially gold foil gilding techniques — experimenting with ways of bringing light, texture, layering, and unexpected material encounters into painting.
We’ll also play with unconventional materials such as eggs and honey and discover how materials can behave beyond traditional painting approaches.
Participants will create small compositions inspired by playful surprise prompts drawn at random — allowing each work to unfold in its own direction.
No previous experience needed — curiosity is enough.
Drop in at any point, paint with me, observe, experiment, have tea, and spend some time in the studio atmosphere ☕✨
Participation: donation-based, starting at €20
(all materials included)
Leave with your own artwork and traces of a shared process.
Looking forward to shapeshift together!

Book summary:
On a hot day in Bethlehem, a twelve-year-old Palestinian-American girl is yelled at by a group of men outside the Church of the Nativity. She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: 'You exist too much,' she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the U.S. and the Middle East--from New York to Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine--Zaina Arafat's debut novel traces her protagonist's progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.
