Walk : Burnley to Goldy's! Tavern Collingwood 6.8km Yarra Trail
Walk : Burnley to Goldy's! Tavern Collingwood 6.8km Yarra Trail
Starting from 'Friends of Mine' cafe in Burnley, we walk along the Yarra Trail for a short 6.8km walk to Goldy's Tavern in Collingwood. This pub offers a traditional pub experience with loads of character and charm. Arriving at around 12pm, we'll grab a drink and perhaps something to eat while we catch up on your previous adventures and plan future ones. If you like a morning coffee, arrive earlier to grab a coffee ***before*** the meeting time. We meet at 10:30am for a 10:40am start. If you arrive late or you're waiting for your coffee order, you can catch up on the trail or meet at the destination. We leave on time to ensure we get to the venue as it opens at 12pm. If you're new to the group, come along and meet some of the regular hikers and suggest your favorite hiking locations for the coming months. The pace will be moderately brisk but not fast. We will not be stopping often to regroup. I will pause at the turns to help ensure no one misses them. **By attending, you agree to match the pace and stay in sight of the group or be comfortable navigating your own way to the destination.** With the variability of this kind of event I will book a best guess close to the event and we will find extra tables or seats on the day if needed. We arrive just as the venue opens. The 'Going' list is for the walk and booking to keep the group size manageable. If you're on the 'Waitlist', you're welcome to join at the venue from 12pm and find your own table or grab a drink and mingle. If you miss out this month, look out for this again next month. It's recommended you take public transport. The finish location transport options are: * 900m walk to Victoria Park train station. * Walk to nearby 86 trams on Smith St. * 2.8km walk to Parliament Station By attending, you agree to drink responsibly and take public transport if you're drinking. **What to bring:** * Water bottle * Appropriate clothing if it's windy or possibility of rain * Hats/Sunglasses/Sun protection if it's sunny **MEETING LOCATION** Friends of Mine Cafe https://maps.app.goo.gl/VLwPK9HXLkB4E8o78 Tap on the map below to get the pin location for the exact meeting spot. **LIABILITY WAVER** The organiser of this group cannot accept any liability for any loss, damage, injury or accidents to participants or their property on this event. Is equality compatible with excellence?
Is equality compatible with excellence?
**PLEASE NOTE RECENT LOCATION CHANGE & ATTENDANCE FEE!** Please join us this Sunday as we discuss is equality compatible with excellence. **We will meet at the Queensberry Hotel, 593 Swanston Street, Carlton (100m north of previous location) at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp.** **We kindly ask attendees to pay $5 to attend to help with MeetUp costs & venue costs. This is not mandatory, but if you are a regular member it would be appreciated. Any extra moneys will go towards buying food and drinks for the table. The venue also expects us to spend money as a group, so grateful if you could buy a drink from the venue.** There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged. Find below some questions to consider, however these are free-ranging events and the below serve as a springboard for the discussion. \- Equality of what \- outcome\, opportunity\, dignity\, status\, political power? \- Excellence in what \- occupation\, sport\, art\, moral character? \- Is excellence inherently hierachical? \- Is it fair that some children get enormous advantages \(mostly non\-financial\)? \- Does meritocracy fairly reward talent\, or does it entrench advantage? \- Can democratic equality coexist with technocratic expertise? \- What have philosophers had to say about this topic \(Nietzsche\, Rawls\, Sandel etc\)? \- What do the experiences of other countries reveal about this topic? \- Are the solutions different for children and adults or if we are thinking on a 20 year time frame\, not this year? \- Can a society maximise equality and excellence at the same time\, or must one give way?

Lets Hello World: n8n (In-person and Online)
A hands-on session exploring n8n, the open source workflow automation tool. We will install it, build a simple automation, and experiment with connecting services and local AI models. **About the Event** Let’s Hello World is a simple idea. We pick an open source tool and begin. Not a deep dive. Not a polished workshop. Just a focused session to install it, try it, and build something small together. The goal is to get past the hardest step: beginning. **n8n** n8n is an open source workflow automation tool that lets you connect services, APIs, and scripts into repeatable workflows. During this session we will: \- Run n8n locally \- Explore the interface \- Build a basic workflow \- Connect to at least one real service No prior experience required. If you have been meaning to try n8n but have not made the time, this is your chance. Bring a laptop and curiosity. Prioritising what matters workshop
Prioritising what matters workshop
🧭 Prioritising What Matters Most In January, we did the **Vision Boarding** workshop 🖼️ Big ideas. Big feelings. Big “ah yes, this is the life” energy. And then… Monday happened. 😐 This workshop is about what comes **after** the vision: 👉 **What do you actually do next when everything feels important and your brain has simply left the chat?** If your to-do list currently: * Stares back at you menacingly 👁️ * Has items from 2019 still “in progress” * Feels like a moral judgement instead of a tool ✨ welcome ✨ We’re taking your existing vision and turning it into **clear priorities and doable tasks**, without shame, hustle, or pretending you’re powered by unlimited spoons. ### 🛠️ What we’ll do (chaos → clarity pipeline) * Use **values** as a decision filter (not a personality test, promise) 🧽 * Narrow things down to **3–5 values that matter *right now*** (everyone else can wait) * Do a quick **life audit** to find where your energy is thriving vs. quietly escaping through the vents 🪫 * Translate all that into: * A short list of priorities that actually deserve your time 🎯 * Habits that won’t immediately start a rebellion 😤 * One-off tasks with a suspiciously high payoff 💥 * Apply the **TOP framework** (Time-pressure × Outcome ÷ Perspiration) so you’re not spinning the “what should I do?” wheel every day 🎡 ### 💬 Plot twist: you will talk to people This is a **social workshop** 🤝 There will be: * Pair chats * Occasional “oh wow same” moments No forced sharing. No spotlight anxiety. You can participate by talking, listening, nodding, or aggressively highlighting your worksheet. All valid. ### 🧠 Who it’s for Neurodivergent folks (ADHD, autistic, AuDHD, gloriously neurospicy 🌶️) who: * Came to the Vision Boarding workshop and want the *actual follow-through (but it's ok if you didn't come to it 😅)* * Have a vision but a to-do list that has become a cry for help 🆘 * Are tired of productivity systems that assume you wake up refreshed and motivated every day ### 📍 The extremely important logistics 🗓 **Sunday 15 February** ⏰ **1.30pm – 3.30pm** 📍 **Sandringham Library** Worksheets provided ✍️ No pressure to overshare 🙅 Low-energy attendance fully respected 😴💚 Same vision. Fewer tabs. Better priorities. Let’s make your to-do list less cursed. 🪄🧠
Yarra and Botanics Walk discussing 'Butter' by Asako Yuzuki
Yarra and Botanics Walk discussing 'Butter' by Asako Yuzuki
We'll meet at the spot where Fed Square meets the Princes Bridge over the Yarra (near the pedestrian crossing closest to the river from Flinders St, on the Fed Square side). We'll walk for about 6km along the Yarra River, through the Botanic Gardens and back along the river to Federation Square for a coffee after the walk. This month, we're reading and talking about 'Butter' by Asako Yuzuki. The blurb: "**The cult Japanese bestseller about a female gourmet cook and serial killer and the journalist intent on cracking her case, inspired by a true story.** *There are two things that I can simply not tolerate: feminists and margarine.* Gourmet cook Manako Kajii sits in Tokyo Detention Center convicted of the serial murders of lonely businessmen, who she is said to have seduced with her delicious home cooking. The case has captured the nation’s imagination but Kajii refuses to speak with the press, entertaining no visitors. That is, until journalist Rika Machida writes a letter asking for her recipe for beef stew and Kajii can’t resist writing back. Rika, the only woman in her news office, works late each night, rarely cooking more than ramen. As the visits unfold between her and the steely Kajii, they are closer to a masterclass in food than journalistic research. Rika hopes this gastronomic exchange will help her soften Kajii but it seems that she might be the one changing. With each meal she eats, something is awakening in her body, might she and Kaji have more in common than she once thought? Inspired by the real case of the convicted con woman and serial killer, "The Konkatsu Killer," Asako Yuzuki’s *Butter* is a vivid, unsettling exploration of misogyny, obsession, romance and the transgressive pleasures of food in Japan." Goodreads rating: 3.48 How does a walking bookclub work? Like a normal bookclub, we talk about the book, what else we're reading, have read, or want to read (as well as a few tangents into life outside literature!) but we do it while walking around Melbourne and then over a coffee. We often split into smaller groups as we walk, but we also regroup through the walk. Should I read the book beforehand? The conversation will be more interesting if you do, but you can still come along if you haven't finished it yet! Do I need to bring anything? **Comfy** walking shoes, drinking water, some money for coffee or a bite to eat after if you wish. No need to bring the book unless you want to. No shows No shows (RSVPing yes and not attending) mean the group waits unnecessarily for those who are not coming, thinking you are running a little late. It’s absolutely fine to change your rsvp for any reason up until the walk begins, and you don’t need to leave a comment, send a message or give a reason, but if you don't click that 'change rsvp' button, you may be removed from the group. Membership Fee Did you know that while it is free to attend most events, Meetup charges organisers about $600 a year to organise a group? Members of the Walking Book Club are asked to pay a membership fee of $10 per year (not per event) to help cover this cost. When you join the group, you'll be automatically given a three month trial so you can see what the group is like, without needing to make any payment. If you would like to continue attending events after this, please follow Meetup's instructions to pay the $6.50US/approx $10AUD fee once per year (or contact group organisers if you would prefer to make payment using paypal, payID, cash or bank transfer).
