Petersfield to Liphook - Hampshire's delights
**SUMMARY (all info is approximate!)**
**Distance**: 21km (13 miles)
**Duration**: 6-7 hours walking
**Grade**: Moderate
**HIGHLIGHTS**
* great views from Shoulder of Mutton Hill
* forests coming into bloom
* bluebells, spring flowers
* forlorn paths
* weird and wonderful moreland on Longmore Common
* Sussex Border Path & budding rhododendrons,
* country pubs for refreshments.
We'll start our walk in Petersfield and head north to follow part of the 34 km (21 mile) Hangers Way - a long distance path less travelled within an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The countryside around here is unspoilt and forlorn, and we'll meet only a few locals out for a walk with their dogs. In our first hour, we will be rewarded with fantastic views from Shoulder of Mutton Hill as we continue through forested slopes and over open fields towards Liss and then onto Liphook via a nice lunchtime pub stop (for drinks only).
After Liss, we will walk down Shipwrights Way to Longmore and Weavers Down, an army managed access land which is eerily remote and wild with a range of different flora, shrubs and trees. We will then walk on the Sussex Border Path and continue to Liphook, where we will reward ourselves with a pub stop.
This will be English countryside in its quintessential beauty and at its best – with budding wild flowers and maybe some wild rhododendrons - as well experiencing Longmore Common which feels like walking over Scottish moreland.

Ashridge Bluebells (14 or 11 miles)
Edward II was born this day in 1284. Roger Mortimer was born this day in 1287. Not only did King Edward & Mortimer share the same birthday, both their fates lay with "*the beauty of beauties...in the kingdom if not in all Europe*" - Isabella of France.
While Isabella acted out her role as dutiful wife to Edward at King's Langley, he proffered the nearby castle at Berkhamsted to his preferred favourite, Piers Gaveston.
From those impressive castle ruins, this walk heads into the Ashridge woods, which house among the most romantic expanses of bluebells. Then the Grand Union canal takes us to King's Langley, historic seat of the Plantagenets.
Travelling in France, Isabella found solace in Mortimer. After she returned with Mortimer triumphant, and Edward found himself duly deposed, the castle from where we start became home for her son John of Eltham.
Outward Travel: Take the train departing 9.54 AM from London Euston to BERKHAMSTED. With Groupsave or Network Card an off peak day single is £7.30. Return from KING'S LANGLEY to London is £5.75. So total return £13.05 with Groupsave or Network card.
Those wanting a shorter walk can finish at earlier stations Hemel Hempstead or Apsley.
Beforehand from 9.30 AM the organizer will be easy to spot near the ticket office in the station wearing yellow to act as a focal point for people arranging group tickets.
Walk start: 10.30 AM from Berkhamsted rail station.
Bring a packed lunch. Cafe stop. Pub stop for drinks.
*How to join?*
* The walk is entirely free of charge;
* You only arrange for your own travel and pub expenses;
* Understand our terms and conditions below (the "IMPORTANT" part);
* Understand how to stay safe outdoors, as you will be responsible for yourself. See our quick safety tips:
http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/
*What to bring*
* Plenty of water, 1-2 litres recommended
* Enough snacks and packed lunch to keep you energized along the walk
* Extra snacks and an extra packed lunch just in case
* Rainproof (ideally waterproof) clothing, sturdy shoes/boots you don't mind getting muddy
Feel free to ask any questions in the comments section!
IMPORTANT
Please bear in mind this is a free of charge, self-guided trip with a hobby group. It is not organized by a business nor any entity with commercial purposes.
Any trip details, travel advice, route planning, instructions and other content in our group merely represent our shared personal knowledge, research and suggestions as outdoor enthusiasts. As this is no business, there is no "product", "service" or "package" and also no "tour guide", "operator" or "walk leader".
Each participant is responsible for their own safety. Even if some of us are very experienced walking outdoors, nobody assumes responsibility for any kind of injury, damage or loss that may happen.
Despite this, we take extreme precautions and all trips we plan are very safe, fun, highly educational and popular. Our experienced members volunteer their time and effort to shape a pleasant and quality adventure for everyone :-)
By participating you acknowledge and agree with this disclaimer.
Here are our tips on staying safe during outdoor trips:
http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/
TRAVEL, ACCOMMODATION, INSURANCE
Although we provide detailed suggestions, each participant is expected to arrange their own travel - this gives everyone the freedom and choice. Anyone interested in travel or outdoor insurance should also arrange this on their own. As mentioned above we always take extreme precautions, but some people may still feel safer if covered.
As most of our trips are confirmed or postponed very close to the event date - heavily depending on the weather forecasts - we advise not to buy this until the last minute. People getting tickets from the same station are encouraged to meet early on the day to benefit from discounts such as GroupSave.

**Hike Description**
We begin in the historic village of **Otford**, occupied for at least 3,000 years. Through the ages, it has been home to Iron Age farmers, Romans, royalty and archbishops. From here our route leads into the tranquil woods and grasslands of the Kentish countryside, reaching **Shoreham** before following the **Darent Valley Path** into the heart of the valley.
The trail takes us into the beautiful **Lullingstone Country Park**, internationally important for its collection of ancient trees. Beech, ash, oak, sweet chestnut and hornbeam all thrive here, with some specimens thought to be over 800 years old. Emerging from the woodland, we arrive at **Lullingstone Castle**, set beside its peaceful lake, before continuing to the site of **Lullingstone Roman Villa** — a rare survival of a Roman estate house first built around 100 AD.
From here we continue through rolling Kent fields, rewarded with views of the impressive **Eynsford Rail Viaduct**, its nine red-brick arches towering 22 metres above the valley floor.
Our hike concludes in the charming village of **Eynsford**, where we explore the evocative ruins of **Eynsford Castle**, a Norman stronghold built in 1088. With its riverside setting, ancient remains and traditional cottages, the village provides a perfect finale to a day steeped in history and countryside beauty.

🌟 **Trip** **Highlights**
• Conquer the **three highest peaks in Surrey** — Box Hill (224m), Leith Hill (294m) & Holmbury Hill (261m)
• Hike through the **Surrey Hills AONB**, one of England’s most beautiful landscapes
• Walk through **Denbies Wine Estate** — the largest vineyard in England
• See the historic **Leith Hill Tower** with its sweeping panoramas
• A **superb training hike** for major challenges (Yorkshire Three Peaks, National Three Peaks, Kilimanjaro, Toubkal, Everest Base Camp etc)
🥾 **Hike Description**
This is Outdooraholics’ **toughest day hike from London** — a formidable challenge often called the Yorkshire cousins as it rivals the Yorkshire Three Peaks in length and ascent. We take on the three highest points in Surrey: **Box Hill, Holmbury Hill and Leith Hill**, following ancient sandy trails and woodland ridges across the **Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty**. Surrey is the most wooded county in England, and this route showcases its very best trails.
Starting from **Holmwood**, our route climbs first to **Leith Hill** (294m), the highest point in the South East of England. Here the summit is crowned by the 18th-century gothic **Leith Hill Tower**, offering some of the most far-reaching views of any of our hikes — south to the sea and the South Downs, and north as far as central London landmarks on a clear day.
From there, we continue along sandy trails and woodland ridges to **Holmbury Hill** (261m), where the remains of an Iron Age fort overlook the forested Weald below. Our final peak is the iconic **Box Hill** (224m), renowned for its chalk slopes, sweeping views over the North Downs, and challenging ascents that make it a classic hiking destination close to London.
The trail also takes us through the **Denbies Wine Estate**, the largest vineyard in England, before completing our circuit. Due to the length and intensity of the route, we usually do not have time for an end-of-hike pub stop — though if timing allows, we may fit a brief one in.
**Toughness (Please Read):**
This is a **very tough, long, and hilly hike** with over 700m of total ascent — comparable to climbing "Mount" Snowdon. Expect steep sections, some loose ground, and a short section where you need to use your hands it's so steep. The **pace will average 4.2–4.6 km/h** and **the hike will not be slowed down or cut short.**
It is **not suitable for beginners or intermediate hikers**. Only experienced and fit walkers should join. If a participant is unable to keep pace or complete the hike, there are places they can arrange a taxi to leave the hike. If you have any doubts about your ability, we recommend choosing one of our less demanding hikes instead.

Explore Britain’s most stunning trails in a small group of up to 15, travelling together by private minibus to beautiful, remote locations not easily reached by public transport.
We’ve created a list of FAQs to help answer your questions.
#################
Ready to embark on an epic and challenging “miniature mountain range” adventure? Then join us on a day hike to the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty! We'll walk south to north, taking in all the main summits of the Malvern Ridge. This is a difficult hike with lots of ascents and descents, but all that effort will be well-rewarded by the dramatic scenery! Comparable in distance and elevation to both Snowdon and Scafell Pike, yet on much easier, non-rocky terrain, it's also excellent training if you're eyeing bigger challenges this year, or simply want to stretch your legs and breathe in some fresh air after a long week at the desk.
Rising abruptly from the flat Vale of Severn to the east and the rolling hills of Herefordshire to the west, the Malvern Hills reach their highest point at Worcestershire Beacon (425 metres). Spectacular landscapes combined with a wealth of ecological, historical and geological gems make this a truly unique destination. And here's a fun fact: at around 700 million years old, the rocks that form the Malvern Hills are among the oldest in the UK!
The lofty Malvern range has drawn people since prehistoric times. Its summits offered good vantage points and were ideal for defence in troubled times. Our route will pass the impressive Iron Age hill forts of British Camp and Midsummer Hill, both believed to be over 2,000 years old. We’ll also visit the intriguing Hermit’s Cave (also known as Clutter’s Cave) – a mysterious man-made chamber carved into the ancient rock at an unknown date.
Our hike concludes in Great Malvern, once a fashionable spa retreat for Georgian and Victorian society. For centuries, the Malvern Hills have been well-known for their health-giving spring waters. Many famous people came to Malvern to “take the cure”, including Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens.

Lesnes Abbey Wood - Walk, Abbey Ruins + (optional) Pub
I was planning to do this on 18th April, but our favourite (and only) pub with the yummy £9.99 pizzas is fully booked that day. So I have moved it to the 25th, when the bluebells will hopefully still be there, in addition to the other attractions in this lovely wood.
For those of you who perceive Abbey Wood as being a long way away, its only in zone 4, its 15 minutes & 4 stations from Whitechapel on the Elizabeth Line, covered on all free passes, and around two quid if you are a paying passenger.
Situated in South East London, Lesnes Abbey Wood offers 88 hectares of ancient woodland, a park and a ruined abbey (grade two listed). There is also the Arboretum, where we can take a walk through a collection of trees from around the world, plus other attractions too.
https://www.lesnesabbeywoods.org/explore/park-gardens/
I am putting this event up nice and early because I have to book tables at The Abbey Arms. So put your name down if you are definitely coming, but please do message me should you not be eating.
I will be giving the pub numbers next Wednesday (15th April). So if you are one of the several who don't make up their mind until the eleventh hour, I may be able to get you in on the day but no guarantees.
We're meeting at the front of Abbey Wood station, slightly later than usual at 11.15am. I expect to be at the pub between 3.30 and 4pm.
If you haven't already paid for April, I ask for a nominal contribution of £2 to help cover Meetup organiser fees. No shrapnel please.
RISK WARNING/DISCLAIMER: Please remember that as with any physical activity, there can be dangers associated with hiking/walking, especially around waterways, forests, farms and countryside. Your decision to voluntarily participate in this activity is an informed decision. and by attending this event you agree and accept to take sole responsibility for your own actions, your own safety, and your own belongings.
Please dress appropriately, including sturdy shoes. Please bring any necessary medication with you. You will need to be sufficiently fit to walk several miles at a moderate pace. We may occasionally cross or walk short distances on roads; country and woodland tracks can be muddy or slippery; animals may be encountered on occasion.
INSURANCE: If either yourself or any guests you bring along require insurance for this walk, then you must arrange this yourselves.
GUESTS: If you are bringing any guests along, there is no facility on the Meetup site to record their details. Please ensure that you make them fully aware of the Risk Warning/Disclaimer and Insurance statements.
