Photograph Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens July 4th
In previous years, the rangers said they try to get to the park and open the gate by 7:45 AM. From the website: [https://www.nps.gov/keaq/index.htm](https://www.nps.gov/keaq/index.htm) Waterlilies are bountiful all over the park! Our volunteers moved the tropical lilies from the hothouses to the display ponds, and they are vibrant. Bird enthusiasts have been enjoying watching the 3 young fledgling red-shouldered hawks, nesting orchard orioles, and kingbirds. Turtles have been laying eggs, and tadpoles and frogs are abundant in the ponds. Every year, we visit Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens on July 4th. The lotus flowers start blooming in early June and will be plentiful by the end of the month. The best time to visit is in the morning, as the temperatures are cooler and the flowers close up in the heat of the day, usually around 1:30 pm. I know it is outside of the Virginia Beltway, but it is not far. It is a very unique place in Washington, DC. I will be there in my grey pickup and rain or shine (hopefully shine)! Bring: Tripod Comfortable shoes Water Fully charged batteries Empty memory cards Rain poncho and plastic bags for the camera and lens in case of rain. Share only your very best, most interesting shots after the field trip, and keep it down to between 5 and 10 photos. Park Facts Entrance Fee: Free Allow Dogs with lease: No Bathroom: Restroom in the Visitor Center Address: 1550 Anacostia Ave, NE, Washington D.C. 20019 Lat, Long: 38.913003, -76.940142 - Parking Lot Plus Code: W375+6W Washington, District of Columbia Website: https://www.nps.gov/keaq/index.htm I generally schedule this meetup on the Fourth of July, as I would have the day off. They are open on July 4th, but one year we waited until 9:00 AM until a ranger showed up to unlock the gate, and it wasn’t a holiday. I also want to mention security, as in the past, a photographer in my group was at the gardens and saw someone’s car being broken into in the parking lot. From the parking lot, walk towards the gardens down the path. I usually stay to the left and head into the lotus fields. Please be careful, as there are just dirt paths between the fields, and if there has been a lot of rain, there can be ruts, and I almost twisted my ankle. You actually need a fairly long lens, as the lotus flowers are tall and can be some distance away. A wide angle is only good for some overall shots, and a good-sized macro works as well. Another thing folks do not realize is that the flowers do bloom into September, but have many full blooms. This is one park where you do not have to worry about mosquitoes, as they are eaten by pond beetles, dragonflies, and damselfly larvae, and also by frogs and birds. There is a boardwalk at the back of the flower fields that goes out to a marsh area. I have seen many types of birds and dragonflies in that area. Being there makes it hard to believe that you are in Washington, DC. On the way out, allow some time to check out the small ponds with different lotus and lilies that also attract frogs and dragonflies. Why you will not see any mosquitoes in the park: https://www.nps.gov/keaq/learn/nature/insects.htm By sending in an RSVP and joining this meetup event hosted by the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup, I am also agreeing to the terms of the following release and waiver of liability, which shall be binding on my heirs, executors, administrators, successors, and assigns. In consideration of my (and my child’s) participation in the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup, I do hereby release, discharge, and hold harmless the Organizer, its members, officers, directors, employees, and the leader(s) of this event from any and all liability by reason of any damage, loss, expenses, or injury arising from my (and my child’s) participation in this event, including that caused solely or in part by the fault of any and all of the above-named parties.
Socrates Café Rockville Meetup
Socrates Café Rockville Meetup
Socrates Café meets twice a month. Though this may be considered a "philosophical" group, there are no rules as to what is discussed. Usually, the topics revolve around social concerns, morality, and the first principles of things. Prior to each meeting we vote online for the questions we will discuss. That way, we will have enough time to ruminate on them and have more in-depth conversations. If you RSVP to a meeting, you may post your question in the event comments section below. I'll send out a survey for voting a few days prior to the meetup. We discuss two questions each night. So you will get to cast two votes in the survey. When we meet, we break into smaller groups of five to seven to discuss the top two vote-getters. Each group discusses one question for around 45-50 minutes, and we then take a short break. After reconvening, each group moves on to its second question. Hope to see you there! -Brian

They will have a lead and 15 volunteers biking and driving along to help make sure things go smoothly. . **Don’t forget to wear festive holiday wear and decorate your bike.** The 15th annual 4th of July bike ride from Catonsville to Fort McHenry is organized by Catonsville Rails to Trails, a nonprofit group dedicated to developing and maintaining trails in the Catonsville area. This annual event is a beloved part of Catonsville’s Independence Day celebrations, drawing hundreds of cyclists each year. The ride begins at Catonsville Bicycles on Frederick Road and includes a scenic 10-mile route to Fort McHenry via the Gwynn Falls Trail, with 20-minute water break at Federal Hill beore getting to the fort. Participation is free, and donations support trail maintenance and expansion projects like the Short Line Trail. Further details at [Fort McHenry Ride 2026 | Catonsville Rails to Trails](https://crtt.org/fort-mchenry-ride-2026/) Please get an online registration ticket so they can better calculate how many will be participating and get enough food etc., ready. You need to choose the $0 ride free or $12 donation ticket on Eventbrite (a trustworthy website): [15th Annual Bike Ride to Fort McHenry Tickets, Saturday, July 4 • 8 AM - 12 PM | Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/15th-annual-bike-ride-to-fort-mchenry-tickets-1990513169473) If you don't register online beforehand or you'd like to give a donation, do so from 8:00-8:25 am in person using cash or check or go to [https://crtt.org/donate/](https://crtt.org/donate/) **DISTANCE OPTIONS** RideWithGPS map: [https://ridewithgps.com/routes/51538735](https://ridewithgps.com/routes/51538735) These are just suggestions. Participants can return whenever they feel they have biked enough. Option A: Bike 4 miles out then back. Option B: Bike 6 miles out then back. Option C: Bike the full ride (10.5 miles to Fort McHenry). Rest break then return. The event leads plan to do this option. We'll post the RideWithGPS map in the comments. Option D: Add more miles by biking the Trolley Line #8 or #9, or connect to the Grist Mill Trail in Patapsco Park. **PARKING INFO** There is street parking available all along Mellor Ave and Frederick Road. Paid parking is also available on Frederick Road. **Additional parking:** 1. Under the 757 Frederick Road, office building. 2. 24 E Melrose Ave, Catonsville, which is behind the Social Services building. 3. 11 E Melrose Ave, Catonsville, behind Farmhouse Greens. 4. The Clubhouse, 10 St Timothy's Lane **FAQs** (taken from the CRTT website) **What time should I arrive at the meetup location?** Participants are expected to begin assembling at 8 a.m. to enjoy pre-ride drinks, fruit, and pastries and socialize with fellow cyclists. Thanks to Atwater’s (815 Frederick Rd) for providing the food. Arriving early will give you time to register and review the ride details with Erin Walton & Charlie Murphy. The ride will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. when the Town Crier bellows. **Where are we meeting?** Keryn will send the exact location. **How long does it take to finish the ride?** Most people finish under 2.5 hours. We all start together, and it is a social pace. However, it is a large group ride, and natural separation occurs. The first half of the ride is downhill and flat. Riders should be prepared for some climbing on the way back. **What is the route like?** The roads are not closed. We use bike lanes when available and there's a portion through the Gwynns Falls Trail (paved trail). We stop for about 20 mins to regroup at Federal Hill before going to Fort McHenry. We don’t actually go into the Fort, just the grounds. Most ppl spend about 20-30 mins and ppl leave in waves. The 4-mile ride from Catonsville to the Gwynns Fall Trail along Frederick Road is all downhill. The portion of the ride on the Gwynns Falls Trail is relatively flat, as is the downtown Baltimore section. The ride back is a little tougher. It is mostly uphill and can be difficult. **Are there bathrooms?** At the start of the ride, the Catonsville Bicycle Shop will have a restroom available. There is also a restroom at Fort McHenry. **Are there water stations?** We will have water-filling stations at the start of the ride at Catonsville Bicycles. CRTT will set up a filling station at Federal Hill. You can also fill a bottle at Fort McHenry. Plan accordingly to stay hydrated. **Do I have to wear a helmet? What should I wear?** YES!!! Lights are a good idea too. Please dress in red, white and blue! Please wear suitable footwear, no flip-flops. **Where can I park?** If at all possible, ride to the start. If you are driving, look for street parking on Mellor or Newburg and pay close attention to any signage, as there may be restrictions ahead of the parade.

Mantra Drum Circle for Rain
Mantra Drum Circle for Rain
Join us to drum for rain! The drum circle will be at the Guru Rinpoche statue at the entrance to the Peace Park, across the street from the temple. We will be chanting sacred mantras as we drum, praying for abundant rain to ease the drought. All are welcome! Please bring any percussion instruments you have - the more the merrier! If you don't have any drums, there are typically extra available. Either way, you can chant along with everyone. In the event of inclement weather, we usually drum as long as we can before the storm starts, or wait it out and start a little late. We hold out until the last minute to cancel so if the weather seems iffy, keep an eye on our Facebook page for announcements. The DC region is currently experiencing moderate to severe drought. Many other regions of the world are also experiencing drought conditions. We will dedicate our prayers to bringing life-giving rain to all who need it!

"Tusk Love" by Thea Guanzon
"Tusk Love" by Thea Guanzon
Come join us to discuss our July pick "Tusk Love" by Thea Guanzon! Book description: A merchant’s daughter who yearns for adventure gets more than she bargained for when she falls for a broodingly handsome stranger in this saucy romantasy from the New York Times bestselling author of The Hurricane Wars. “A true delight of a book! Spicy and heartfelt—this one is a winner all around.”—Katee Robert, author of Neon Gods As the daughter of an ambitious merchant, Guinevere’s path has been predetermined: marry into a noble house of the Dwendalian Empire, raise her family’s station, and live quietly as a lordling’s obedient wife. But Guinevere longs for a life unbounded by expectations, for freedom and passion and adventure. Those distant dreams become a sudden reality when her caravan is beset by bandits, leaving her guards slain and Guinevere stranded alone on the dangerous Amber Road. Her only chance of survival is to travel alongside Oskar, the aloof half-orc who saved her during the attack. Unlike Guinevere, Oskar’s path is not so set in stone. With his mother dead and his apprenticeship abandoned, all that’s left is a long, lonely walk to a land he’s never seen to find family he’s never met. The last thing he needs is a spoiled waif like Guinevere slowing him down—even if the spark between them sizzles with promise. Despite his cold exterior, Oskar is brave and thoughtful and unlike anyone Guinevere has ever met. And while Guinevere may be sheltered, she brings out a softness in him that he has never dared to feel before. As the flames of their passion grow, they realize that soon they’ll need to choose between their expected destinations or their blossoming romance. Written by New York Times bestselling author Thea Guanzon at the behest of Critical Role’s Jester Lavorre, Tusk Love brings the most romantic story on Exandrian bookshelves to life.
