It’s a relaxed environment perfect for making new friends and practising languages at your own pace. * **Socialising:** Coming alone or with friends, this is a great opportunity to meet new people in the city. They will have an orange lanyard and will be sitting next to our sign. * **Write your ‘Language Label’.** Here you can write your name, the languages you are learning, and the languages you can help others with. * **Pay.** Our £1 event fee pays for our lovely event hosts and keeps the event going. Card only please. * **Get talking!** With the help of our host you will be able to find other people attending the event with compatible language interests - we are all very friendly and the majority of our attendees come alone, so there’s no need to worry about getting involved! **📌 Where are we?** We’re normally located in the downstairs room of The Penderel's Oak Pub, 283-288 High Holborn, London WC1V 7HP [https://g.co/kgs/57H1Wbr](https://g.co/kgs/57H1Wbr) However, always check the location on this meetup event and in our [WhatsApp Group](https://languagexchanges.com/whatsapp) just in case there is a change. **💡 Important Info:** Please disregard the attendee numbers shown on Meetup or Facebook. Because we meet at the same time and place every week, many regulars do not sign up beforehand, but we always have a great turnout, often exceeding 70 people. We also have many more participants who join through other platforms. **🔗 Connect With Us:** Stay updated by joining our WhatsApp and Facebook groups or following us on Instagram. You’ll get event updates and stay connected with the community! Many people come solo, and it’s a great way to meet new friends in a relaxed environment. **How does the event work?** When you arrive, you’ll get a sticker to write your native language and the one(s) you’d like to practice. Our hosts will help you find people to chat with based on your preferences. **What if I don’t speak multiple languages?** No problem! Whether you’re fluent or just starting out with a new language, everyone is welcome. **More Questions?** Check out our [full FAQ here](https://languagexchanges.com/what-is-a-language-exchange/) **💛 WHAT THEY SAY** **🗣** “It's so great that people are very friendly and nice here. A quick note to say that if you would like to help me with the running costs of the book group, you can give a small contribution via Ko-fi: [https://ko-fi.com/annabookgroup](https://ko-fi.com/annabookgroup) Thank you to everyone who helped me with the Meetup fees in 2025! We will meet from 6:30 onwards at the pub and go to the room upstairs between 6:30 and 7:00. Please check with the bar staff before going up that the room is ready and please don't go up before our start time. We will start the discussion at around 7:00pm and talk about the book for an hour or so before having a break. Then we can vote on next month's book. If you have any suggestions for short (or shortish) books for the next shortlist, please message me ahead of time. Thanks! \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad (1899, 188 pages** Heart of Darkness, a novel by Joseph Conrad, was originally a three-part series in Blackwood's Magazine in 1899. It is a story within a story, following a character named Charlie Marlow, who recounts his adventure to a group of men onboard an anchored ship. The story told is of his early life as a ferry boat captain. Although his job was to transport ivory downriver, Charlie develops an interest in investing an ivory procurement agent, Kurtz, who is employed by the government. Preceded by his reputation as a brilliant emissary of progress, Kurtz has now established himself as a god among the natives in “one of the darkest places on earth.” Marlow suspects something else of Kurtz: he has gone mad

Lez Hike! Seven Sisters - Seaford to Eastbourne
Lez Hike! Seven Sisters - Seaford to Eastbourne
*Time to hit the South Coast again 😎* The plan: Meeting at 9am sharp on Saturday 27th June at London Victoria to catch the 9:24am train to Seaford. Arrive at Seaford station at 10:48am, set off to climb the Seven Sisters cliffs and take in the beautiful views! When we arrive at Eastbourne, the plan is to have a few drinks at spoons (just opposite the station) and then be on our way back to London. We don't want to be leaving any later than 8pm. Best suggestion is to book a flexible ticket from Eastbourne to London. **IMPORTANT, PLEASE NOTE:** Kate and Paty are not professional hike leaders, we obviously won't be ditching anyone, but please keep this in mind! 😂 **The Seven Sisters cliffs are stunning but also potentially dangerous as the chalk cliffs are constantly eroding and can collapse without warning.** **For your safety, remain 5 metres back from the edge of the cliffs.** There is the option to book your tickets individually or as a group to get a discount. Whatever you prefer, please organise the train tickets for yourselves based on what works for you. It will be a single ticket from London to Seaford, and then a single ticket from Eastbourne to London. **Recommended tickets:** Single from London Victoria - Seaford Time: 09:24 - arrive at 10:48. Cost £13 but may change. Single from Eastbourne - London Victoria: Time: 19:33 - arrive at 21:06. Cost £26.40 but may change. **FOOD** Bring a packed lunch, but we will visit the spoons pub in Eastbourne after the hike for drinks. **DISTANCE & DIFFICULTY** Distance: 14 miles (22km) Grading: Intermediate/Challenging Ascent: 580m Hiking time: 5.5 to 6.5 hours **WHAT TO BRING** • Hiking clothes & footwear - ideally hiking boots. Hat & gloves if cold, waterproof jacket. Sensible clothing basically. • Sunscreen • Water (2 litres) • Lunch • Optional: dogs can come along! Please only bring if you feel confident of your dog's capability and safety, this will be a long day and we cannot take responsibility for any pets. **TOILETS** • We highly recommend to use the station toilets before we set off, there are limited toilets along the way and often very busy as it's a popular hike! Lesbian Book Club (Women Only)
Lesbian Book Club (Women Only)
**What this is** A relaxed Sunday afternoon book club for lesbian and bisexual women, meeting in person. This is our first event and we will discuss which book we plan to read. It’s low-pressure, calm, and easy to settle into the event. Women usually range from their 20s through to their 60s. Most sessions are a genuine mix of new faces and returning women, so you won’t be the only person coming for the first time. Most people come on their own. That’s normal here, and we make sure you don’t feel it. Hosts introduce people, keep things flowing, and make the space feel easy rather than awkward. If you’re feeling nervous, you won’t be the only one. Many women feel that way before their first book club and end up staying longer than they expected. **Current book club format** There isn't a set book for this session. Bring along whatever you're currently reading, have recently finished, or are thinking about reading next. We'll chat about books, swap recommendations, and discuss what everyone has been enjoying. If you'd like a suggestion, some members are currently reading: 1\. My Year in Paris with Gertrude Stein by Deborah Levy 2\. All My Mothers by Joanna Glen No preparation needed. Come whether you've read a lot recently or not. Listening, chatting, and discovering new books is just as welcome as discussing one you've loved. **Important** This is a female-only lesbian space. That boundary is clear and upheld at events. If that doesn’t work for you, this won’t be the right event. **How to attend** You must register in advance to attend. Register here: [www.thelcommunity.com/book-club/](https://thelcommunity.com/book-club/) **One quick note on how the community works** **L Community is member-funded.** The standard contribution is **£13 per month** to cover the platform, events, moderation, and safeguarding. If £13 isn’t workable for you right now, you can opt out for now. Support can be changed or cancelled at any time. Support the platform: [www.thelcommunity.com/back-us-now](http://www.thelcommunity.com/back-us-now) **Arriving and support** The table booking is under the name Jenny. If you’re nervous, arriving alone, can’t find us, or have any difficulty at all, you can message at any point – days before, on the day, or during the event. If it helps, we can have someone come outside to meet you. **WhatsApp Jenny** WhatsApp only (calls or messages): **+44 7591 386019** Normal calls or texts will not go through on this number. **Staying connected** Registering for an event is separate from joining the wider community. If you’d like to stay connected between events, access the private WhatsApp group, and join the wider network, you can register here: [www.thelcommunity.com/app](www.thelcommunity.com/app) We’re currently reading Ink Black Heart. No pressure to have finished it.

Casual Boardgames - make friends, then beat them in games
Casual Boardgames - make friends, then beat them in games
Welcome to Casual Boardgames, where we enjoy classic tabletop games and social deduction games while bonding over good food, drinks, and great conversations.
We started this group to meet new people and make new friends, and bonding over games in a relaxed atmosphere is a great way to do that. We currently meet near route 23 and Polaris Parkway, and this is close to areas like Powell, Lewis Center, Worthington, and parts of Westerville and Columbus.
Feel free to bring your own games or play one of the many games our members bring. If you are inexperienced, we will help you learn.
Here are just a few examples of the kind of games we play.
Tabletop/board games: Splendor, Catan, Azul, Dominion, 7 Wonders…
Social deduction games: Code Names, Chameleon, Werewords…
IMPORTANT:
1. While we love playing a variety of games and competing, we are not just about the games. We interact and talk while playing, and this leads to a lot of laughter and fun. If you just want to compete and focus solely on the game, then this is probably not the group you are looking for.
2. Many people join groups like this and never (or rarely) show up after weeks or months. If you join and never really come, we will eventually remove you from the group as a courtesy to our members. Why? Because limiting group conversations (on the app) to regular members makes communication and planning much easier. Also, while it may be rare, it protects members from people who join because they are interested in following a person instead of having a real interest in our group. If you get removed, it is just because you haven’t come, and we follow this protocol as a courtesy to our regular game players.
