Artist Talk (Prof Morris Lum): Evolving Landscapes of Canadian Chinatowns
( This event is SOLD-OUT )
**Join U of T Professor Morris Lum for a dialogue on the shifting architectural and cultural landscapes of *Canadian Chinatowns.***
--We've been interested in this conversation/topic for many years--and attended previous walks/talks/conversations with Professor Lum.
***You need to get your own FREE Eventbrite ticket***\*--link is below. (Limited tickets--so follow all the instructions)\*
https://www.cbc.ca/arts/for-more-than-a-decade-this-artist-has-photographed-north-americas-changing-chinatowns-9.6958912
Drawing from his engagement with the David Lai fonds at U of T Libraries and his new monograph, *Chinatowns: Tong Yan Gaai*, Lum examines the transformation of these vital communities.
The program includes an introduction by archivist June Chow.
https://www.morrislum.ca/projects
Over the past decade, **Morris Lum has embarked on an extensive exploration of the Chinatown communities across Canada and the United States. Focusing on the architecture and evolution of these enclaves,** Lum delves into how “Chinese” identity is shaped and expressed through their structures. Using a large-format camera, he has captured Chinatowns in cities such as Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston, chronicling the rapid transformations these communities face and documenting their shifting architectural and economic landscapes.
His colourful photographs offer a poignant visual record, spotlighting both historical and modern cultural landmarks—small family-owned businesses, iconic Chinese restaurants and vital community organizations—that define these neighbourhoods.

**About Wilderness Union**
Wilderness Union is deliberate about building an outdoors community that connects you to the life-changing magic of the outdoors and helps you find your people.
Members range from 20-40 years old. The group is a mix of GTA locals and newcomers to Toronto from within Canada and abroad.
Attendance numbers on Meetup don't reflect our actual event attendance - we typically have 15-20 community members at each event. Large enough that there's someone new to meet but small enough that it's not overwhelming!

The Harbour Hopping Birding Excursion
Spring migration is starting to really come alive, and this exciting new Canada Bird Club outing is a wonderful chance to get out and enjoy the first wave of returning birds as they begin to flood back into Ontario.
There is always something special about those first signs of spring. Seeing your first Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, or Turkey Vulture of the season is a real thrill. These may be familiar birds, but after a long winter, welcoming them back is always exciting.
For this outing, we will be harbour hopping along the Lake Ontario shoreline, focusing on some of the best areas for early spring bird activity. Lakeshore locations are often excellent places to find newly arrived migrants, along with impressive numbers of returning ducks and other waterbirds. One of the real highlights at this time of year is seeing large flotillas of ducks made up of many different species.
Among the birds we hope to see are raptors such as Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Peregrine Falcon, and possibly even Eastern Screech-Owl. Other early spring arrivals may include Eastern Bluebird, Eastern Meadowlark, Song Sparrow, Killdeer, Belted Kingfisher, Eastern Phoebe, and a nice variety of ducks.
As always in birding, there is also the chance of a surprise or two along the way.
Whether you are a seasoned birder, or someone who is interested in learning about birds, or a photographer who simply loves being out in nature, this trip is for you.
We will depart from Finch Station at 9:00 a.m. and head toward the Hamilton area, making several birding stops as we work our way along the Lake Ontario shoreline before returning gradually to Toronto. We expect to arrive back at approximately 5:00 p.m.
It should be a fantastic day out in the sun with good company, fresh spring air, and plenty of exciting birdlife. I would love to have you join us.
Cost is $99 plus tax, for a total of $112. Transportation is included.
