Analytic Political Philosophy and Authoritarian Contexts
Authoritarian contexts — e.g. regimes, movements, and personalities — are ubiquitous throughout human history, and can be found across our world today. Analytic political philosophy has tended to shy away from such contexts through idealising the conditions for theoretical research and delineating clearly the scopes for envisioned praxis and efficacy. Even where such contexts feature in analytic political theories, they are either portrayed as definitively and unequivocally defective, or as 'objects' with which democratic societies must engage. This talk posits that such methodological presumptions are fundamentally problematic: not only do they overlook the substantial richness, diversity, and agency of life in authoritarian contexts, they also fail to shed light on how political change - whether it be in the direction of greater political legitimacy or justice - can and should come about in authoritarian contexts. This talk draws upon Dr. Wong's two recently published works — Reparative Justice in Authoritarian States (Routledge, 2025) and "Living the liberal life in illiberal contexts: the case for realist pluralist liberalism", Inquiry (2026).
About the Speaker:
[Brian Wong](https://www.asiaglobalinstitute.hku.hk/about/people/brian-wong) is an Assistant Professor in Philosophy at Hong Kong University. He is a political theorist and geopolitical strategist whose research examines authoritarian regimes and citizens’ political and moral responsibilities, colonial and historical injustices, and the interaction between domestic politics and foreign policy of states in East Asia, especially China. Brian has taught modules in politics to undergraduate students at Oxford and Stanford Universities, and has delivered keynote speeches across Harvard-Science Po, Carnegie-Tsinghua, Tsinghua, Tufts, and Stanford campuses.
Brian is a Hong Kong Rhodes Scholar (2020) and obtained his DPhil in Politics at Oxford University. He holds an MPhil in Political Theory (Distinction) and an MA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (First Class) from Oxford. He co-founded and advises Oxford Political Review, a publication aspiring to bridge the theory-practice gap.

About the Centre for Ethics (http://ethics.utoronto.ca):
The Centre for Ethics is an interdisciplinary centre aimed at advancing research and teaching in the field of ethics, broadly defined. In pursuit of its interdisciplinary mission, the Centre fosters lines of inquiry such as (1) foundations of ethics, which encompasses the history of ethics and core concepts in the philosophical study of ethics; (2) ethics in action, which relates theory to practice in key domains of social life, including bioethics, business ethics, and ethics in the public sphere; and (3) ethics in translation, which draws upon the rich multiculturalism of the City of Toronto and addresses the ethics of multicultural societies, ethical discourse across religious and cultural boundaries, and the ethics of international society.

Dad's Thursday game night
**Please RSVP before 3pm on Thursday if possible. Please do not show if you have not RSVP'd. There is a $6+tax seating fee payable to the store. Packaged memberships are also available.**
Please join us on discord for latest updates [https://discord.gg/Y49YTnAX6](https://discord.gg/Y49YTnAX6)
Entering our 10th year, this group has been running weekly events intended for Dad's who are also board game enthusiasts. Please see our photo gallery for a sample of the games we play. We do not typically table mass market games (Chess, Clue, Monopoly etc.)
We often table a variety of games, new and old, to keep things fresh. It is not required that you bring any games yourself, although it is appreciated if you do. In that case, please be prepared to teach whichever games you bring.
Please do your best to support our venue LVLUP Games. Consider buying all your board games and accessories there.
The focus for each event is to have fun so please adhere to our event etiquette (Jan 2026):
1. Please show up on time (we usually start the non-filler games right when the event starts).
2. Please only attend an event if you've already RSVP'd. Please change your RSVP status if you have to cancel (we typically wait a bit if we think you're stuck in traffic).
3. Please be kind to other players at your table:
* No excessively long turns
* No silly arguments over rules (if there's ambiguity, just agree on something temporarily for the evening)
* No rolling back your moves in previous turns
4. You can invite a non-Dad guest every now and then but they cannot be a regular member of the group.
5. Please leave the arguments about politics at home.
6. Please do not take a win/loss too seriously.
Thanks and we look forward to having you join us!

Sunday, May 24 • 10 AM - 4 PM
**Overview**
An embodied experience of laughter, breath, movement, and vocal sound play - where voice and expression are felt - not performed.
**Remembering Who We Are: A Day of Radical Joy through Laughter Yoga & Vocal Sound Play**
Join us **in person** for an uplifting and interactive experience - a **one-time** unique intertwining of the expertise from two well-seasoned workshop facilitators: Lynn Himmelman, Champion of Laughter & Play and Ann-Marie Boudreau, Vocal Sound Play Specialist Extraordinaire!
**“Before the world told you who you should be, who were you?”**
Most of us have spent years perfecting a "mask"—a version of ourselves that is quiet, composed, and compliant. But behind that mask lies a version of you that is ***loud, rhythmic, and wildly alive.***
In a world that often asks us to "dampen down" our inner spark to fit into boxes and meet societal expectations, it’s easy to lose the melody of our own spirit.
***This workshop is an invitation to strip away the "shoulds" and step back into the vibrant, uninhibited version of yourself.***
This full-day intensive is ***a sanctuary for the unmasked version of you to come out and play***.
By weaving together the breathwork of **Laughter Yoga** with the resonance of **Vocal Sound Play**, we create a safe container to dissolve the "cloak" of adulthood and remember our original state: ***pure, uninhibited connection.***
**What to Expect**
This isn't a choir rehearsal or a gym class—it’s a journey of reconnection. We use movement, rhythm, and sound to bypass the analytical mind and tap into the wisdom of the body.
* **Laughter Yoga:** We utilize intentional laughter as a form of exercise. No jokes are required! Through playful movement and eye contact, "fake" laughter quickly transforms into the genuine, contagious, belly-aching variety.
* **Vocal Sound Play:** We move beyond lyrics and "good singing" to explore the raw power of the voice. Through toning, chanting, and melodic improvisation, we release stored tension and reclaim our unique frequency.
* **Childlike Play:** We revisit the freedom of childhood - before life lured you into a box of limitations - to rediscover a sense of wonder and curiosity.
**The Journey Back to "You"**
The goal of this workshop is a profound **"Remembering."** Together, we will:
1. **Shed the Armor:** Use movement to shake off the weight of societal expectations.
2. **Open the Heart:** Use laughter to break down emotional barriers and foster deep connection.
3. **Find Your Frequency:** Use vocal play to express the truths that words often fail to capture.
4. **Reclaim Play:** Remember that joy is your birthright, not a luxury.
***"Laughter is the shortest distance between two people, and song is the bridge between the human and the divine."***
**Who This Is For**
**This space is for those who feel:**
* A longing to express more fully, but something holds them back
* A sense that their voice—literal or metaphorical—has been muted
* A desire to reconnect with joy in a way that feels real, not forced
You do not need to be "funny," and you certainly do not need to be a "singer." You only need a willingness to listen inwardly…and allow something to shift.
If you have a heartbeat and a voice you are perfectly qualified to attend. Come as you are . . . and leave as who you ***really*** are.
**What You Will Reclaim**
* **The Freedom to Play:** Reconnect with your "Inner Child"- the one who laughed without a punchline and sang without a stage.
* **Somatic Release:** Use the combination of sound and laughter to flush cortisol out of your system and replace it with a "cocktail" of endorphins and oxytocin.
* **Vocal Empowerment:** Stop "dampening down" your soul. Learn to take up space with your breath and your sound.
* **Heart-Centered Connection:** Experience the profound bond that forms when a group of people drops their guards and meets in a space of shared vulnerability.
**What You Will Leave With**
Not just an experience - but a felt sense you can return to.
* The memory of your unfiltered voice
* A body that knows how to release, not just hold on
* A deeper trust in your natural expression
And perhaps most importantly:
**the recognition that what you’ve been seeking…**
**has been within you the entire time.**
**Facilitators' Note**
*This is a "no-talent" zone. You don’t need a singing voice, and you don’t need to be in a good mood. We don't use jokes; we use the body. All you need is the desire to be seen and heard in your most authentic form. This workshop provides you with the “How”.*
**Participant Checklist**
* **Comfortable Clothing:** Wear something you can move, dance, and lie down in. Dress in layers to accommodate periods of heating up and cooling down.
* **Relaxation Props:** Bring a yoga mat, 1-2 pillows for under your neck and knees, a blanket or towel to cover yourself
* **An Open Mind:** Leave the "adult" at the door; they can pick you up at 5:00 PM.
* **Water Bottle:** Laughter and toning are thirsty work!
* **Brown Bag Lunch:** Bring food for yourself (Lean towards, fresh, organic, vegetarian choices in order to align with The Redwood Studios vegetarian policy)and (optional)food to share. Get to know your workshop playmates, socializing and breaking bread together, between our morning and afternoon workshop sessions, in our community gathering spot, The Redwood Green Room, 3rd floor. If you prefer to break away on your own for lunch, be aware that there are limited "eating out" options close enough to the venue to be back within the hour.
***Reconnect with your true self through fun, community, and joyful expression.***
**How to Claim Your Spot in the Workshop**
Please note that this event can be attended **in-person only**.
**Pre-registration is required.** Registration closes at 10pm May 23.

Observation Decks, City Icons & A Once-a-Year Experience
Some places in Toronto you walk past every day… but rarely get to go inside.
This is your chance.
Join us for a special Doors Open Toronto outing, where we’ll explore two of the city’s most iconic buildings — including access to spaces that aren’t usually open to the public.
This event only happens once a year, and it’s one of the best ways to experience the city from a completely different perspective.
This is not a formal tour.
It’s a social outing — with incredible views, a bit of history, and shared discovery.

🏙️ What We’ll Do
We’ll start at TD Bank Tower (66 Wellington St W), part of the Toronto-Dominion Centre — one of the finest examples of modernist architecture in the city, designed by legendary architect Mies van der Rohe.
We’ll head up to the observation area (approximately 223 metres high), where you’ll get a stunning view of Toronto’s skyline from a space that isn’t typically open to the public.
From there, we’ll walk over to Toronto City Hall and visit its observation deck.
Opened in 1965 and designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell, City Hall’s curved twin towers and central council chamber make it one of Toronto’s most recognizable landmarks.
From above, you’ll get a completely different view of Nathan Phillips Square and the downtown core.
⚠️ Please note: both locations are very popular during Doors Open, so there will likely be wait times. Part of the experience is the buzz and energy of the day.
Afterward, we’ll head over to CF Toronto Eaton Centre for a casual lunch in the food court. 🍔🥗
You’re welcome to join or head out whenever you like.

**🏛️ What Is Doors Open Toronto?**
Doors Open Toronto is a free annual city-wide event that opens the doors to architecturally, historically, and culturally significant buildings across Toronto.
For one weekend, you can explore spaces that are usually closed to the public — from office towers and historic sites to creative and civic spaces.
It’s one of the best ways to connect with the city and see what’s normally hidden in plain sight.

Free In-Person Meeting: Healing from Trauma and Past Betrayals
This is a free, in person meeting.
Burdened by a stressful relationship? Unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of anger, despair or self-doubt. They can create dwindling spirals of fights and seeking to make-up, or trying to “pin the blame” on someone or something. If you don’t find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse.
Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well.
Whether you are suffering from a divorce, or a painful break-up, don’t know who to trust (or who to CHOOSE) as a partner, friend, boss or employee - the anxiety of relationship troubles can really make a mess of things. Maybe you’ve suffered a betrayal, or are dealing with hostility or criticalness or invalidation. Dwindling relationships can involve destructive behavior, where we hurt those we love, or start succumbing to self-destructive thoughts, attitudes or behaviors that spiral out of control and affect much more than our immediate relationship.
Past losses in love or life can affect how we act or react to new people and situations and hold us back from even starting to create new, possibly great relationships! How can one get back onto a saner course of action?
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life: human relationships!
Break free from self imposed limitations
Here we will discuss:
• How to “erase” the trauma of past hurts and betrayals so that one isn’t always repeating past mistakes.
• Why and how do the negative emotions of others affect you?
• Why is my partner withdrawing and what can I do about it?
• Why do we sometimes feel compelled to hurt the ones we love?
• Fights & arguments - what's really behind them?
• What underlies “corrosive criticism” or the need to invalidate self or others?
• How one can stably change one’s outlook on life so they can affect positive change?
• Where do compulsive destructive behaviors come from and what can be done about them?
• How to form closer bonds & keep growing the relationships with the people you care about?
• How to enhance one’s own ability to survive and create positive healthy relationships whether in love, family & friendships or in work, business or one’s career?
Relationships can be hard and life itself IS challenging. Why not arm yourself with the knowledge and breakthroughs that have been made about the mind, mental reactions & interpersonal relationships, so that one has better awareness and control over themselves and life in general.
Learn where painful experiences are “stored” and how they can unknowingly affect us. You will also find out how one can “erase” those past painful experiences so that one is free to move forward without being tripped up by the past. Learn too, about what can lead some people to become “toxic” personalities and how to identify those traits in others so you won’t be tripped up trusting the wrong person.
Our free Meet-ups occur in a safe environment where one can learn, without fear of judgment or criticism, and without the recommendation of harmful mental techniques or therapies, just how YOU can get yourself onto a happier & more successful path: in love & in life.
We look forward to having you join us!
This class is sponsored by the Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Center of Central Ohio.

If you don’t find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse.
Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival, while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well.
