Can the mushroom-derived nutrient ergothioneine prevent dementia?
**Delaying age-related diseases: Can the mushroom-derived nutrient ergothioneine prevent dementia?**
Distinguished Professor Barry Halliwell
host: Kamil Pabis, PhD, co-organized by VIVA foundation
As we sit in this room, we are all breathing oxygen (O2), a gas essential for life for efficient energy production from our food. Yet oxygen has a dark side; some of it makes reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as oxygen radicals, which can damage our body tissues, a factor that contributes to age-related diseases, especially dementia. ROS are not all bad, they help protect against infectious disease via the process of acute inflammation (keeping us alive) yet as we age inflammation isn’t controlled properly and the extra ROS cause more damage that contributes to age-related diseases. ROS levels in the body are controlled by antioxidants, many of which we make ourselves but others come from the diet. Most attention has been paid to vitamins C and E, polyphenols and carotenoids. Consuming diets rich in these compounds correlates with better health, but high doses of them as pure compounds in supplements have had little effect in delaying dementia and other age-related diseases in properly-controlled human clinical trials; supplements cannot replace the effects of a good diet. Interpreting correlational studies as causation is often done, but fraught with danger.
In the past ten years we have studied a diet-derived antioxidant that has been almost totally ignored, namely ergothioneine (ET). It is found in many foods, but the major source is mushrooms. Our work has demonstrated that ET is likely very important in maintaining brain health and delaying or preventing dementia and other age-related disease, and pilot clinical trials support this. Evidence is growing that ET is a “longevity vitamin” to support healthy ageing, but rigorous clinical trials are needed to prove this. Its effectiveness may be due to its many additional mechanisms to protect our organs, in addition to acting as an antioxidant.

Introducing The Best Group 🎾
What if a tennis class became the easiest way to meet new people?
**The Best Group** combines structured, level-based tennis group classes with an optional social matching experience.
Here's how it works:
🎾 Join a tennis group class with players of a similar level
🤝 Having joined a class, you can choose to be matched with **three other people you've never met before** for dinner.
The difference? **Everyone at the table will already have completed a tennis group class with The Best Group.**
Instead of meeting complete strangers with nothing in common, everyone shares the same experience, making conversations feel far more natural from the very beginning.
Think of it as a Timeleft-style social experience—but with a built-in shared connection before you ever sit down for dinner.

STACK Meetup [AI]: Delivering AI as a Capability
**ANNOUNCEMENT – Registration via this [link](https://go.gov.sg/stackmeetup-2jul2026-mc) only.**
Moving AI from prototype to a reliable production often raises questions about optimisation, scalability and compliance. At this STACK Meetup [AI], we strip away the hype to offer an exclusive look under the hood of PlatformAI, GovTech’s developer-first platform built to scale AI capabilities reliably for the Government.
Take a peek into how PlatformAI provides an enterprise-ready platform layer to govern and orchestrate large-scale AI model and capability deployments. Our speakers will share strategies on unifying secure model access, balancing costs using Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) versus Provisioned Throughput, and leveraging managed multimodal pipelines – Vision, Document, and Audio – without the overhead of maintaining fragmented infrastructure.
Walk away with fresh insights on how GovTech is democratising AI deployment at scale, whilst ensuring proper governance like prompt security, throughput optimisation, and architectural guardrails to address modern scaling bottlenecks.
**Secure your spot for STACK Meetup [AI] today: [https://go.gov.sg/stackmeetup-2jul2026-mc](https://go.gov.sg/stackmeetup-2jul2026-mc)**. Limited seats available!

What does the Church-Turing thesis actually mean?
**ANNOUNCEMENT: [Venue change] SQ Collective has generously offered to host the venue for this session for free. It is only appropriate that we allocate some capacity to them (via a Luma event). This is a chance for folks in the AI builder community to participate in our group’s philosophy practice, and for us to broaden our audience within that community. If you have already signed up via Meetup, there is no need to double-register through Luma, should the Luma event be made public.**
“You insist that there is something that a machine can't do. If you will tell me precisely what it is that a machine cannot do, then I can always make a machine which will do just that.”
—John von Neumann, in a talk at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, 1948
“Everything is computer!”
– Donald J. Trump, sometime in 2025
What is computation? These days, it seems more provocative to stipulate what *isn’t* computation. For instance, to suggest that the brain can be functionally anything other than a kind of computer is suspect in the current technological zeitgeist. It seems self-evident that any system of information processing to achieve some output can be explicated in terms of computation. At the foundation of this conviction is the Church-Turing thesis, which both gave a logical definition to and circumscribed the bounds of computation in the form of the Universal Turing Machine, “a most general formulation of machine” (Alan Newell 1980). The idea that the Universal Turing Machine is an abstract design template that can encompass any kind of information-processing system has led some to extend the scope of the thesis to physics itself: “any finite physical system can be simulated by Universal Turing Machines” (David Deutsch 1985).
What do we make of such ideas? Instead of fumbling in the accreted fog of the present, a quiet philosophical dialectic was already underway at the time Alan Turing demonstrated Universal Turing Machines in his seminal paper *On Computable Numbers* in 1936. Ludwig Wittgenstein was a contemporary of Turing’s, and made a number of keen observations in the years that followed\*. In particular, Wittgenstein anticipated readings of the Church-Turing thesis such as the above as resulting from an uncritical acceptance of some inferences within Turing’s demonstration. In this session, we will recount the Church-Turing thesis, its various interpretations, the Wittgensteinian response, and what it all means. Join us to discuss and re-examine the notion of computation, in the hopes of coming to a clearer understanding of it.
The format of this session will be a presentation followed by an open-ended discussion.

*\- Master Choa Kok Sui*
The **Achieving Oneness with the Higher Soul® course** by Master Choa Kok Sui is one of the most **advanced and transformative spiritual courses** —focusing on "directly experiencing union with your Higher Soul”!
This course moves beyond intellectual understanding to offer experiential techniques designed to transform your spiritual connection through.
* **Understanding the Nature of the Soul**: You will learn about the journey of the soul through incarnations and discover the energetic "seeds" in your aura that act as recorders, affecting your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual life.
* **Strengthening the Antahkarana (the Spiritual Cord)**: A central practice involves increasing the size of the "communication cable" between your Higher Soul and Incarnated Soul. This is the "shaft of light" often depicted in religious art. By strengthening this connection, you accelerate the flow of intuition, guidance, and spiritual energy into your daily life.
* **The Meditation on the Higher Soul (Blue Pearl)**: This guided meditation is a synthesis of ancient techniques kept secret for centuries. Its purpose is to directly facilitate the union of the lower and higher selves, which is the true meaning of Yoga and Illumination.
* **Foundational Knowledge**: Builds on foundational topics such as the three permanent seeds, the inner caduceus, and its relationship to the safe awakening of Kundalini energy.
While it all appears deeply spiritual, it grounds the knowledge into practical, tangible benefits that you can experience in your daily life, even amidst a busy and chaotic environment.
Regular practice of the techniques will bring about:
* **Inner Peace and Clarity**: Experience a new level of calmness, stability, and one-pointedness, allowing you to remain positive and patient even under pressure.
* **Increased Intuition**: Learn to recognize and trust the impulses and guidance coming from your Higher Soul, helping you to make better decisions.
* **Purpose and Confidence**: Gain a clearer understanding of your life’s purpose and destiny. This knowledge brings an inner confidence, as you realize that all worldly problems are temporary, while your connection to your Higher Soul is permanent..
* **Character Building**: The course also includes powerful self-development tools and techniques for character building, which are essential for creating positive, lasting changes in all areas of your life and much, much more!
More than 2000 participants have attended this workshop since we brought it here..now, it’s your chance to experience it!

Practical Philosophy Meetup - Singapore 🇸🇬
🏛️ **WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌
📓 **HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Dsjl0cwLVxR4tw1jTC1Osx?mode=gi_t), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the ‘official' start.
* 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.
* 20:45-21:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.
* 21:00 - The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other.
**🧧PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend! We just ask that if we are meeting in a café, buy a beverage! Some chapters rent a space for us to meet, and they may ask for donations to help contribute to the cost of rent. Donations will always be 100% voluntary though!
💛 **WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
🗣 “I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” - Ekam
🗣 “I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” - Daniel
**🤓 FAQ**
* What will we talk about? What's the topic?
The topic for the week is shared every Sunday in the Whatsapp group. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you don’t see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Dsjl0cwLVxR4tw1jTC1Osx?mode=gi_t).
* Do I need to study or read anything to attend?
No preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it, but it's not required.
* Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* Is it mostly men that attend?
Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms.
* Can I come alone?
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* Can I be late?
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* Where do you meet?
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Dsjl0cwLVxR4tw1jTC1Osx?mode=gi_t) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/).

Stop Guessing: How to Measure and Improve LLM Outputs
Most people use LLMs by feel: ask a question, read the answer, decide whether it “seems good,” and move on.
That works for casual use. It does not work when you are building software, automating workflows, writing important documents, or relying on AI for anything that needs to be repeatable.
In this talk, we’ll look at how to improve and evaluate the inputs and outputs of LLMs using practical measurement techniques. We’ll cover how prompt changes affect results, how to compare outputs, how to build simple evaluation sets, and how math-based methods like similarity scoring can help you move beyond guesswork.
This will be beginner-friendly, so even if you don't know anything about AI, you should get something out of it. However, this will be a little more technical than our intro talks. You do not need to be an AI researcher, but programmers and technically curious attendees will get a lot out of it.
We’ll cover:
* Why “it looks good” is not enough
* How to improve prompts by changing the input, context, and constraints
* How to compare LLM outputs more systematically
* Basic evaluation techniques for accuracy, consistency, and usefulness
* How embeddings, cosine similarity, and scoring can help evaluate results
* Where automated evaluation works — and where humans still need to stay in the loop
By the end, you’ll have a practical mental model for treating LLMs less like magic and more like systems you can test, measure, and improve.
LOGISTICS AND PARKING:
The talk starts at 7:00 PM. The first half hour is reserved for everyone to get set up and mingle. Free pizza and drinks!
The cheapest parking option is to find street parking, which will only cost you a few bucks. Otherwise, park in the nearby veteran's museum lot for $8. It's highly recommended you avoid the nearby $15 garage parking.

Psychic Development Series II - Pueo Group
Private Group. Closed to the Public
Knowing ourselves and understanding our abilities is the first step toward wielding our gifts with control and accuracy.
In subsequent classes we will verify and hone our talents with activities and discussion. These are hands-on workshops and participation is expected.
The goal of our series will be to develop expertise in areas of particular interest such as mediumship, channeling, divination, healing and, etc.. Our ultimate directions will be determined by class members as we evolve.
I look forward to sharing and discovering with you. - Cynthia
