SCARBOROUGH - Practical Philosophy đ¨đŚ
**đď¸ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no âofficialâ philosophy knowledge required! đ
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community đ
**đ HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://tally.so/r/ZjaPO0), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, itâs important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the âofficial' start.
* 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the âjump-offâ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. Itâs not obligatory to answer them.
* 20:45-21:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.
* 21:00 - The official meeting is over but itâs a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other.
**đ§§PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend! We just ask that if we are meeting in a cafĂŠ, buy a beverage! Some chapters rent a space for us to meet, and they may ask for donations to help contribute to the cost of rent. Donations will always be 100% voluntary though!
đ **WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
đŁ âI feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting whatâs right and wrongâ - Ekam
đŁ âI got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.â - Daniel
**đ¤ FAQ**
* âWhat will we talk about? What's the topic?
âThe topic for the week is shared every Sunday in the Whatsapp group. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you donât see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://tally.so/r/ZjaPO0).
* Do I need to study or read anything to attend?
No preparation is necessary. This isnât a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and weâll discuss it, but it's not required.
* Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* Is it mostly men that attend?
Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we donât meet in any dark rooms.
* Can I come alone?
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* Can I be late?
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* Where do you meet?
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://tally.so/r/ZjaPO0) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/).

To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Toronto Singles "Dating Games" Online Social Game Night: A Twist On Speed Dating
Get tickets at: [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1982861045765](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1982861045765)
Toronto Dating Games Singles Game Night - Play Fun & Easy Social Icebreaker Games And Match With People You're Interested In Seeing Again!
**\* AGE RANGE: 20s, 30s & 40s \***
A Dating Games Singles Game Night is a revolutionary new event that is changing the way singles meet. It's a fun new twist on speed dating! Let's face it, we're all tired of the endless online swiping on dating apps and this event is the perfect way to meet other singles in real life.
**HOW THE EVENT WORKS...**
\- At each Dating Games Singles Event event we book a reserved area with some tables at a cool bar with a great vibe
\- After you get your ticket we give you the event reservation name\.\.\. When you arrive you just tell the venue host the reservation name and you'll be directed to the event area where you'll get to meet the other fun singles who are also looking to meet new people\.
\- You'll be playing fun and easy icebreaker games to get to know everyone\.
\- After the event you'll be a able to login to our app where you'll be able to select the people you'd like to stay in touch with \(scroll down for more details about how that works\)\.
\- We usually have between 12 and 20 people at each event\. The amount of people varies from event to event but you'll definitely get to meet a good amount of people without being overwhelmed by a huge crowd\. We keep the events fairly small and intimate so you really get to know everyone and make real connections\.
\- Our host will walk you through the event via video on your phone \(so there's no awkward check in process or silly name tags\)
\- The coolest part about the event is that no one else at the venue will even know you're at a singles event\. It will just look like a group of friends having fun around a table\!
\- During the fun icebreaker games you can order cocktails \(or non\-alcoholic mocktails\) to get everyone talking and then move into the games \(feel free to order food/appetizers if you'd like to as well\. Everyone pays for their own tab at the venue\)
*\*\* QUICK NOTE: WE WILL BE RAISING THE TICKET PRICE EVERY FEW DAYS AND BECAUSE WE LIMIT THE SPOTS AVAILABLE, THE EVENT WILL VERY LIKELY SELL OUT BEFORE THE EVENT TIME GRAB YOUR TICKET ASAP TO MAKE SURE YOU GET A SPOT. \*\**
**WHAT ARE THE ICEBREAKER GAMES ALL ABOUT?**
You'll be playing fun games like "Friendly Feud" which is similar to the popular prime time TV show we all know. In this game you and the other singles at the table will be asked fun questions like, "Name a gift that women love men to give them". You will try to come up with the most popular answer and then you'll find out if you got the top answer. Another popular game we sometimes play is Blank Slate where you have to try to guess the most popular fill in the blank answer to questions like, _________ TIME . You'd have to try to come up with the most popular answer... is it PARTY TIME? Is it NIGHT TIME? Or maybe it's SHOWTIME.
**HERE'S THE REALLY COOL PART!**
This event has led to countless relationships and new friendships formed because after the event you'll be able to stay in touch with the people you met at the event by reaching out and contacting them on our app. After the event is over we allow you to login to the app and **swipe on the people you'd like to stay in touch with!** It's similar to a dating app but you'll have actually met and mingled with the people in person before deciding if you want to match and stay in touch with them! After you get your ticket you'll be able to upload a photo of yourself on our webpage (only viewable by the other event attendees). After you sign up you will get an email from us with instructions on how to upload your photo to our app/webpage. It's the perfect way to meet someone, merging new technology and good old fashioned meeting in real life!
*A message we received about one of our recent events: "I had a great time at the event. The people were really friendly and the games were a lot of fun. It was a refreshing change of pace from the dating apps" - Leah*

FAQ:
CAN I PAY AT THE VENUE DOOR?
We do not accept payment at the venue. You must pre-pay and get your ticket online.
DOES MY TICKET INCLUDE DRINKS?
Your ticket doesn't cover drinks. There is a great selection of drinks (and/or food you can order at the venue). Your ticket covers the cost of us organizing and marketing the event.
HOW MANY WILL BE ATTENDING?
We usually have between 12 and 20 people in attendance (It varies from event to event). We find the smaller crowd a way better way to meet someone than being overwhelmed by a giant crowd. The smaller crowd allows you to really get to know everyone and it's a much easier way to make real connections.
IS THE EVENT GENDER BALANCED?
We do our best to keep the ratios close to even but sometimes there may be one or two more women and sometimes there may be one or two more men.
CAN I ARRIVE LATE?
Try to arrive on time or even a few minutes early.
CAN I COME ALONE?
Yes, about 85% come on their own.
ARE THERE DRINKS?
Yes, there's a full menu of great drinks you can order at the bar.
IS THERE FOOD AVAILABLE?
Yes you can order food. The venue has a food menu and great appetizers available to order.
IF I ATTENDED A PAST DATING GAMES EVENT CAN I ATTEND ANOTHER ONE?
Absolutely! We change up the games at each event so come to as many events as you'd like.
WHAT IS THE DRESS CODE?
While we don't have a dress code we ask that you please look neat/presentable. What you wear to work or what you'd wear for after work happy hour drinks is fine.
IS THERE A REFUND POLICY?
If you need to cancel, please email us and we can transfer you to a future event. However we do not offer transfers if you cancel on the day of the event or don't show up.
THIS IS A MULTI-MEETUP GROUP EVENT. SEVERAL OTHER LOCAL GROUPS HAVE ALSO BEEN INVITED SO WE'LL BE SURE TO HAVE A GOOD SIZE TURNOUT. THE RSVP LIST ON MEETUP REFLECTS ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF ATTENDEES.
IMPORTANT NOTE: CLICKING THE "RSVP AND PAY ORGANIZER DIRECTLY BUTTON" ON MEETUP DOES NOT GET YOU A TICKET/SPOT. YOU HAVE TO CLICK THE LINK TO THE EVENTBRITE PAGE AND PURCHASE A TICKET THERE. PRICE GOES UP AS EVENT TIME APPROACHES AND MAY SELL OUT SO GET YOUR TICKET ON EVENTBRITE ASAP.

Together for the first time in one Mega-tour, the history of the Village of Yorkville and Rosedale. Even though each village had its own distinct history and characteristics, the two were miles apart in their development. One was industrial, and the other residential, all under the watchful gaze of Mr. Jarvis. Oh and let's not forget the brewer Mr. Bloore, notice the spelling?
Named for the wild roses that littered the hills above the homestead of William Jarvis and his wife Mary, Rosedale is an iconic Toronto district with elegant houses, manicured lawns, and a fascinating history!
Yorkville to the southwest is tied in with the history of Rosedale, but barely, and runs parallel to the development of both the neighbourhood and the surrounding area. With the Yorkville Brick Works, and the tidy ravine to the east it was a picturesque part of Toronto that remained pretty much rural into the late 19th century.
On this walking tour we explore both districts, and how Rosedale emerged as an affluent Toronto suburb, but all was not good, as the district approached the 1930s depression. With a large proportion of rooming houses, Rosedale slipped in influence and affluence.
This walking tour is for all walking levels and fitness skills. Please dress for the season and bring water. And remember to bring your love of history.
This tour begins across the street from the Rosedale Subway Station in Ramsden Park. The tour returns to the start location after the walk!
This tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person!

**I have had much interest in this lecture, and several are now on the waitlist for the January 31 event, so I have decided to add a second event!**
We have an amazing "Lecture on the Go" series for 2026. New topics and fascinating stories abound! Join us and learn about the world and keep active and warm during the winter months!
I started this walking classroom when we were under that horrible cloud called Covid. This series was popular and helped people get out and back into society and life. The series is back for 2026 with 6 new topics for exploration over the winter and spring months.
The "Lecture on the Go" Series is open only to members who have purchased the YEARLY MEMBERSHIP PASS, it's free for those members. If you wish to attend a lecture and you are not a yearly pass member then the price **per** lecture is $20.00.
This first lecture is focussed on the Global Arms Trade. How safe are we in a world of lies and corruption where the almighty dollar rules over life and death itself.
You would be surprised at the hidden secrets I have found during my research, and how arms are bought and sold in the international market. How money is laundered offshore, and brought back for school programs and senior centres. All these needed programs come from the trade in not only guns, but also in weapons of mass destruction.
In a business, and it's a business, which consumes trillions of dollars of taxpayer's money, and results in war and destruction all in the name of money and power. You will never view this world the same again. This topic is timely and fascinating to anyone who is interested in where money comes from, and where it goes when it leaves our pockets.
Hope to see you there!
Topics upcoming in the 2026 series of lectures are as follows.
\*The Global Arms Trade (January 31)
\*Dante; The Hidden Meaning Behind The Divine Comedy (February 28)
\*The 250 Year History of Encyclopedia Britannica: From Print to Digital (March 28)
\*Hidden Wonders of Canada; Northern Ontario History and Guide (April 25)
\*Philosophy 1: Great Minds of the Western World: Goethe to Kant! (May 30)
\*Philosophy 2: Great Minds of the Eastern World: Chuang Tzu to Dalai Lama (June 20)
This is the first event in the "Lecture on the Go," series for 2026!
Hope to see you on this "Lecture on the Go!" So book your plans now!
This event is for all levels and walkers, there are a few steps here and there to navigate, but mostly on one level. Mainly this event in a non walking event.

Thursday Discussion Group (formerly Mystic Christianity)
### Thursday Evening Discussion Group
**In\-Person \| Starts at 8:00 PM \(Doors open at 7:30 PM\) \| Drop\-In**
**Starting material:** *[Network of Thought](https://www.holybooks.com/wp-content/uploads/Network-of-Thought-Krishnamurti-ebook.pdf)* by **Jiddu Krishnamurti**
This weekly discussion group offers a reflective and open space to explore themes of **mysticism, spirituality, and inner transformation** through selected writings and talks by Jiddu Krishnamurti, Annie Besant, Alice Bailey, and other thinkers whose work invites deep **inquiry into consciousness, freedom, truth,** and **the nature of self-understanding**.
Rather than promoting a particular belief system, the group emphasizes **shared reading, thoughtful reflection, and respectful dialogue**.
Participants are welcome to engage at their own paceâwhether through listening, contemplation, or open discussion.
While there is **no requirement to commit before attending**, *the intention is to gradually build a group of participants who are interested in returning regularly and engaging sincerely with the material* and the group process. Newcomers are very welcome, and those who feel drawn to ongoing study are warmly encouraged to continue attending.
This is a **drop-in group**, and no prior background or preparation is required.
**All are welcome.** Come as you are, reflect together, and take part in a spirit of openness and mutual respect.

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for April is "Water"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
