Come along on Saturday 18th April to visit the historic town of Hertford! **About Hertford** Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire. Its only 20 miles north of central London and only has a population of 30,000. The town grew up on a ford on the River Lea in 913AD where the Rivers Rib, Beane and Mimram join the Lea. Its name comes from the Old English word '*Herut*', meaning a fully mature stag; thus the meaning of the name is a ford where stags are found. The town has a castle (now just a gatehouse remaining) built by the Normans in the 11th century. In 1563, Parliament met at the castle because of an outbreak of plague in London. Its most famous resident was Samuel Stone, who was born here in 1602 and later emigrated to America. He was instrumental in developing the community he settled in into a city, renaming it Hartford (in the state of Connecticut today), after his birthplace. From the 18th century onwards, the town prospered as a market town, with many warehouses and trade on the river. The town has lots of medieval, Georgian and Victorian properties, along with a local museum. **Cost** The guided tour is £8 per person (payable on the day by cash, credit card, PayPal or Bank Transfer). The guided tour is only open to Full Members of the group. For those that are not doing the guided walk, its a self-guided tour using handouts that I will provide. **Aprox Itinerary** 9:45am - meet at the station and get GroupSave return train tickets (in groups of 3) to 'Hertford East' 10:08am - catch train 10:57am - arrive at Hertford East Station and walk into the town 11:15am - arrive 11:30am - guided tour of Hertford (for Full Members only) with a tour guide. Another fantastic walk by our member Barrie, KENSINGTON - When The Swinging Sixties Moved West === Lennon's secret lover, the magic of Hendrix and the Biba story Kensington today is a shadow of its former self, once a major shopping district. But back in the day it was very much part of the swinging sixties and this walk, transports you back to those magical years when the world flocked to the clubs and boutiques of the area and the Royal borough of Kensington and Chelsea really lived up to its name. Barrie has many personal memories and stories to tell you about those years as well as the interesting history that is all around you as you walk. For example : The first time The Jimi Hendrix Experience ever played on stage together was in Kensington.....but where? The most famous boutique the world has ever known, began and ended its short life in Kensington.....but where? John Lennon had a secret crush on a famous local resident and he visited her in Kensington.........but where? All of this and much, much more. **Join us as we visit two of the photographic jewels of medieval England, the landscaped gardens of Scotney Castle and the picturesque Bodiam Castle in West Sussex!** Bodiam Castle: **Constructed in 1385** to help protect against invasion from the French during the Hundred Years War, this impressive example of a moated castle provides us with **plentiful composition opportunities** to take advantage of the **beautiful symmetrical reflections** available in the wide moat. We'll also explore behind the castle walls and ascend the towers to admire the view of the surrounding countryside. Our visit will be timed so we can take advantage of being able to photograph the exterior after the tourists have left, allowing us to capture some iconic shots that would be difficult otherwise. "Set in the heart of a historic landscape, with spiral staircases, battlements, and a portcullis, 14th century Bodiam Castle is one of Britain's most picturesque and romantic ancient monuments. Windows where arrows were once loosed, a tower that was once a lookout, and ruins that were once walked upon by knights; this is a place where you can relive your childhood memories and let your imagination run riot. In the impressive gatehouse is the castle's original wooden portcullis, an extremely rare example of its kind and, beyond into the courtyard, enough of the interior ruins survive to give an impression of castle life." ## 🥾 GO London Hiking – Frinton-on-Sea, & The Naze Coastal Walk ### 🌄 Overview This spectacular **coastal hike** starts in **Frinton-on-Sea** and explores the wild landscapes of the **Naze Nature Reserve**, one of Essex’s most distinctive headlands. Weaving our way through Frinton, we arrive at **Holland Gap**, before turning Heading north along the coastal path. We pass **Walton Pier** and view the lines of vibrant, multicoloured beach huts. The seafront path continues to the Naze and the iconic **Naze Tower**. Following dramatic cliff-top paths with sweeping sea views we loop the coastline around the headland, and back to Walton where there’s time to relax with post-hike refreshments before the journey home. For our next photowalk, we’ll explore the British Museum, one of London’s most iconic spaces and a perfect setting for indoor street photography. We’ll use the museum’s dramatic architecture, light, and atmosphere to capture candid human stories against a timeless backdrop. We will focus on how people interact with art, history, and space. We'll meet at Wyandot Park, cross Riverside Dr at Lane Rd, then walk south along the water to Griggs Park and back — around 5 miles total. A scenic out-and-back route along the Scioto River. Over time I'm hoping to organize a hike to all the Franklin County Metro Parks. This is the first one so if you're interested jump in! We'll start with the Canopy Walk, a cool feature of this park. Climb 100 stairs to the top - or take the elevator if stairs aren't your thing. At the top there are a bunch of things to play on - a rope bridge, a fireman pole that we can slide down - and more! About fifteen minutes there and we'll head to the natural trail, Buttonbush, Maple and Beech Trail for 2.2 miles then do a 1.7 mile loop on the paved Greenway Trail. We'll be passing our cars as we transition if you only want to do the first loop, or the second loop. Pace of around 3.5 mph but no one left behind. If there is an interest we can grab lunch nearby afterward.
