Wild Wheels | Scooter Journey Across Northern Vietnam
Wild Wheels | Scooter Journey Across Northern Vietnam
**Jaw dropping moments** await travelers who reach the Northeast province of Cao Bang in Vietnam. **Jagged mountains, endless limestone karts, winding rivers and massive cascading waterfalls** will be the well-earned award for those who conquer the **windy, zig-zagged roads** and wobbly hanging bridges on scooter. The lush landscape will surprise you at every turn, but then… you feast your eyes on lush waterfalls the colour of emerald and jade. This is not a trip for the faint hearted or the comfort seeking. **This is raw, unfiltered, off the grid Vietnam,** where the roads are as untamed as the landscape they carve through. Sheer drops plummet hundreds of metres, hairpin bends that demand total respect, and suspension bridges that sway like acrobats over raging rivers. The Ha Giang – Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark and the remote borderlands of Cao Bang are some of **the wildest, least touristed mountain regions in Southeast Asia**. Here, the asphalt is often broken, gravel sections appear without warning, and the weather can flip from blazing sun to thick fog in minutes. **You will ride where Google Maps fears to tread**, through territory still dominated by H’mong, Tay, Dao and Nung villages that see more **buffalo carts than foreign scooters.** Renowned for **vast lakes and chalky karsts**, towering over the rugged landscapes of Cao Bang, the Ba Be National Park’s is a sumptuous valley carved from the flow of the Quay Son River. The serenity is dramatically broken when the **river reaches a 300 meter-wide limestone ledge**, and drops sharply down several terraces, creating the Ban Gioc Waterfall – one of Vietnam’s most impressive natural sights. **Ban Gioc breaks records** the world over for not only being the **largest waterfall in Asia**, but the fourth largest to run along a national border with a **width of over 250 meters and three cascade drops of 70 meters.** Separated into three falls by rocks and trees, Ban Gioc’s thunderous roar of the water hitting the cliffs **can be heard kilometers away.** Whether you pick a spot on a pebbly beach, a grassy bank, decide to perch on a boulder in a stream or lay in the curved trunk of a tropical tree –you will no doubt be moved by one of the **most romantic views Vietnam has to offer**. For those feeling extra adventurous we can even wander further up the side of the falls for even more spectacular views from the top of the cascades. It may sound like a dream, but it is in fact one of the **most picturesque parts of Asia**, and we can’t wait to see you there! **Lets go!** **Day 1: Arrival to Hanoi** Arrival, immigration procedure, transfer to hotel. Trip briefing, overnight. Optional sneak peek on local night life. **Day 2: Hanoi – Ha Giang - Quan Ba – Dong Van** Transfer to pick up our scooters. Following an orientation and safety briefing we begin our ride uphill to Quan Ba. As we ride we’ll soak in spectacular views of mountains and villages until we reach the ‘heaven gate’ in Tam Son. Hike around Quan Ba visiting the Twins Hill and the Nam Dam ethnic village of Dao, followed by lunch in Yen Minh – known for its local organic food. We then continue our ride uphill towards the Rocky Highland and Karst Plateau on the way to Dong Van, followed by a visit to the historic Vuong King’s Palace. **Day 3: Dong Van- Meo Vac** After breakfast we head out for a ride to Lung Cu Flagpole on the Chinese border. Road winds through multiple switchbacks climbing the backbone of a limestone ridge right on the Chinese frontier. You’ll ride past ancient stone forests, H’mong hill tribe hamlets with hemp fields, and the northernmost point of Vietnam marked by the Lung Cu flag tower, in complete silence except for your engine and the wind howling through the karsts. We then continue to ride through zig-zagged roads towards the Ma Pi Leng pass, where we stop for a unique 360° panorama of the river Nho Que between cliffs. Often called “Sky Path” it is actually a narrow ribbon of road chiselled into a vertical 1600 m cliff face above the turquoise Nho Que River. Locals call it “the place where even the horses tremble.” We then move on to the lively market town of Meo Vac. Tonight, we stay in a guest house. **Day 4: Meo Vac – Bao Lac** Exciting day ahead as although today’s road may be short, it’s windy and rugged. We’ll be going slow to ensure everyone’s safety. Drive to Ma Pi Leng Pass for some selfies with oh and ahh from the panoramic peak. The road from Meo Vac to Bao Lac is a forgotten masterpiece of the old “Happiness Road” (the hand-built cliff highway constructed by 1,300 young volunteers in the 1960s). Expect broken asphalt, loose gravel, blind corners, sheer drops, and stretches so narrow that two scooters can barely pass. We deliberately ride slow and in tight formation – safety first! After the pass, the road plunges into a hidden limestone canyon almost nobody talks about. Towering rock needles, wild corn fields clinging to 70-degree slopes, and tiny Lolo and H’mong villages that still use wooden water wheels. This stretch feels like riding through Jurassic Park on two wheels. Continue riding until we arrive at Bao Lac, where we’ll check into a comfy hotel. Late afternoon is free to explore the colourful local market or just kick back with a sunset drink overlooking the Gam River. After dark we hit Bao Lac’s surprisingly lively “people’s square,” think karaoke, 10-cent draught bevies, and locals who will insist on toasting every foreigner who rides in on a scooter. **Day 5: Bao Lac – Ban Gioc Waterfall** Today’s another long one, with a 130 km ride from Bao Lac to Cao Bang – renowned for its gorgeous landscapes and fresh cool air. A 40 km descent that runs through 27 numbered turns. The road hugs the Vietnam – China border so closely that at one point you’re literally riding with one wheel in each country. Emerging from the mist at the bottom reveals Ban Gioc in full roar, an explosive reward that feels earned with every twist of the wrist. **Day 6: Ban Gioc Waterfall – Hanoi** Ban Gioc waterfall is simply jaw-dropping... Welcome to Asia’s largest waterfall! We hop on traditional bamboo rafts piloted by local Tay families and drift to the foot of the cascades, metres from where Vietnam meets China. Feel the mist explode over you as 30-metre walls of turquoise water crash down. You can also can grab a kayak or simply strip down and swim in the natural pools right beneath the falls. The water is surprisingly warm, the current is strong, and the roar is deafening. In fact, **this is one of the very few places on earth where you can legally swim on an international border.** A short but steep trail leads to the upper ledge on the Vietnamese side for the ultimate postcard panorama: the full 300-metre width of the falls framed by jungle-clad karsts. After a late lakeside lunch of grilled fish and fresh herbs, we say goodbye to the borderlands. The scooters get loaded onto the support truck and transfer back to Hanoi in a van with several stops on the way. **Day 7:** **Hanoi** Well deserved rest - free time at leisure, late check out. Airport transfer for flight home after midnight **(on Day 8)**. Bye bye Vietnam! **Activities:** Riding, trekking, swimming, boating, sightseeing. **Accommodation & meals:** Local meals included during the ride, shared rooms in 3-star hotels and guest houses. Restaurant meals on transfers and in Hanoi excluded. **Scooters:** Automatic scooter bikes (Yamaha Nouvo Automatic 125CC or similar), truck support. **Van option**: available for non-riders. **Cost: 4600 AED riders, 4990 AED non-riders** until MAR 05. **Specifically excluded:** Flights, compulsory travel + medical insurance, visas, meals in Hanoi and meals on transfers, single supplement. **Flights:** Flights are not included in trip budget. Emirates EK 394 / EK 395 at 4300 AED. **Visas:** E-visa or visa upon arrival. Visa support available. Abyssinian Odyssey | Lalibela + Danakil Depression, Bucket List of Ethiopia
Abyssinian Odyssey | Lalibela + Danakil Depression, Bucket List of Ethiopia
Ethiopia, a land of natural contrasts, from the tops of the rugged Simien Mountains to the depths of the Danakil Depression, at 120 meters below sea level one of the lowest dry land points on earth surely will never fail to amaze. **Lalibela** is located in the heart of Abyssinian Highlands, on the side of mountain range culminating at 4284 mtrs. The world recognized glory of the city comes from the churches curved in monolithic rocks, concept similar to Petra or Ellora gained Lalibela a spot not only on UNESCO World Heritage list but also on many travel connoisseurs bucket lists. [https://vimeo.com/297861237](https://vimeo.com/297861237) [https://vimeo.com/329506645](https://vimeo.com/329506645) Although date of churches creation is speculated to be around 12th to 13th century, it has been widely attributed to King Lalibela 24 years' project, at the time when city was called Roha. The legend says the **King was born surrounded by the bees** – Lalibela origin in ancient Amharic means **“The one who eats honey”**. Our plan is to visit this **soaked with history UNESCO** site but also spend some time outside to stretch the legs. **Danakil Depression,** located at the meeting point of 3 tectonic plates, with some of the **greatest geological pressures on earth**, the Danakil Depression is **extremely active** and scattered with a large number of volcanoes, including the Erta Ale, while the landscape is covered with lava flows almost everywhere you go. [https://vimeo.com/765781751](https://vimeo.com/765781751) [https://vimeo.com/303054724](https://vimeo.com/303054724) [https://vimeo.com/257364344](https://vimeo.com/257364344) **Danakil**, also known as "**Afar Depression**" is also one of the hottest and the lowest places on the planet, with an average temperature of 34C, day and night. This is the harshest microclimate in Ethiopia, questioning every single life form around for the choice of habitat. **You will feel Mother Nature deadliest phenomena at your feet**, where you will cross the rim and enter the smoking hot lava lake, at night, just a step away. **Lets go!!** **DAY 1 // Lalibela** Meeting at Dubai Terminal 1 for a flight to Addis and connecting flight to Lalibela. Check in to our comfy lodge, spend a day discovering 3 church complexes: the most famous group of George, Royal and Ecclesiastical. In the evening check on the local nightlife! **DAY 2 // Ashetom Maryam + Yemrehana Kristos** Given the local authorities allow, we will drive to yet another spooky location - church built within basaltic cave. It contains skeletons remaining of over 500 pilgrims. In the afternoon short hike to a church located on a cliff with spectacular 360 degree view of the city and the sunset. **DAY 3 // Lalibela + Mekele** Early morning glimpse at markets and souvenir shopping. Flight to Addis and connecting flight to Mekele. Later on we’ll head to local restaurant with “little party never killed nobody” themed evening. Overnight Mekele. **Day 4 // ERTA ALE: Lava lake crater** After gathering supplies and meeting local team, we head out in 4x4s across the rugged volcanic plain. First stop: Lake Afdera, a **saltwater lake shimmering under the desert sun**, where locals still harvest salt by hand. Here you ll have a chance to wade into its mineral-rich hot springs before lakeside lunch. As the heat fades, we continue past scattered Afar villages and stark lava fields toward Dodom, at the base of Erta Ale volcano. Early dinner under the stars. At the summit, witness a rare spectacle: a live lava lake, bubbling and roaring inside the crater. Sleep at makeshift camp on the rim (or descent to camp if activity requires). **DAY 5 // SUNRISE DESCENT, SALT BARS & MIRROR LAKE** Sunrise over Erta Ale’s rim, an eerie and unforgettable light show. Breakfast and continue drive through shifting landscapes: from basalt flows to endless white Afar salt flats. We stop at potassium lakes and visible salt faults, the evidence that the flats are an enormous salt deposit resting atop an ancient lakebed. We head deeper toward Hamed Ela, a desert outpost. Here, ancestral salt extraction lives on. Watch salt miners chipping blocks by hand, loading them onto camel caravans bound for distant markets. By late afternoon, we arrive at the shores of Lake Asale, where the still surface reflects the sunset in white and gold. Overnight at camp under the open sky or local homestay. **DAY 6 // DALLOL SULFUR SPRINGS + RETURN TO CITY** Early departure to Dallol, located 116 meters below sea level. You’re standing at one of the world’s lowest and hottest places. However, this surreal landscape is in fact a cinder cone volcano, and the surface is alive: neon-green acid pools, rainbow-colored sulfur springs, crystallized salt chimneys, and briny phreatic eruptions. It feels as if you’ve stepped onto an alien planet: raw, wild, and ancient. We visit nearby salt pits, where traditional mining continues, and wander through what may be the most alien landscape on Earth. After lunch, we begin the return drive across shifting terrain of the Danakil. **Day 7 // Mekele + SKY CHAPPEL Abuna Yemata Guh** Breakfast and hit the road to Tigray. We will start with the **legendary Abuna Yemata Guh climb** to discover this unique cave church (and its keeper), located at vertical cliff of 250 mtrs. Basic climbing with harness here for just few meters will make it memorable experience for everyone. \*\*[Watch this ](https://fb.watch/llH1OkyoXj/)\*\* Arrive to city late afternoon, shower off the desert dust in the hotel before return flight to Addis and further back home. **Activities:** Striking sightseeing, trekking, encounters of lava fields. **Accomo & meals:** Lodges, hotels (dbl sharing) and camps, incl. overnight at the rim of volcano. Local meals, except meals on transfers (in Addis). **Cost:** **AED** **6,880 excluding all flights,** **AED 11,430 including 2 international and 4 domestic flights.** **Costs valid until MAR 05.** **Visas:** Most of nationalities are entitled for evisa. ***Note:*** *Volcanoes are subject of everchanging activity, viewing of lava lakes and geysers can not be guaranteed.* See yah at Lava Lake x Trekkup Crew [Whatsapp 050 4848238](https://wa.me/971504848238)

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for March is "Our Bodies, Ourselves" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM. It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily. I'll try to have signs outside Marian Hall that Identify our group. We hope to have you join us!

In addition to the Oscars on the big screen, your ticket includes a Meal Deal from the Drexel’s new food partner Newfangled Kitchen (I’m checking on vegetarian/vegan options) along with unlimited popcorn and sodas, a free box of candy, and your first beer, wine or specialty drink on the house! Also included: Oscar-themed trivia with prizes from local businesses, on-site paparazzi, and the Drexel's Oscar ballot contest with a chance to win a year of free Drexel movies! Plus, the BEST and most FUN way to watch the Oscars with fellow film fans and your CMG friends! ADVANCE TICKETS: General public tickets are $45 but Movie Group Members and their guests get in for just $35! Here’s how to purchase your tickets: \* Option 1 – In Person: You can purchase at the ticket counter anytime during operating hours. Just mention you are with the Columbus Movie Group for the discounted rate. \* Option 2 – Online: If you prefer to purchase online, you can do so by going to the link below and following these instructions: 1. Dress up as much as you like – there will be everything from casual to formal at the event! Or you can go in character as one of this year’s nominated films! ARRIVAL: Doors open for CMG at 5:30pm so that’s when we’ll plan to meet! That’ll give us plenty of time to fill out our Oscar Ballots, pick up some free popcorn, candy, and something to drink, mix, mingle, take some photos, pick up your Newfangled Kitchen Meal Deal, grab a seat in our CMG Reserved Section, then settle in to enjoy the Academy Awards on the Big Screen! PICTURES: We’ll take pics throughout the evening and the Drexel Paparazzi will be on hand as well. We’ll also take a big group photo around 6:40 near the entrance before the show begins. If you happen to take some good shots yourself, be sure to upload them on the Oscar Party Meetup event! RESERVED SEATING: As you enter the theater, the roped off section to the right marked “Reserved” is reserved for you, your guest(s) and the Columbus Movie Group! VEGAN MEALS: As previously mentioned, the food vendor does NOT have a vegan option at this year’s Oscar Party. However, we DO have a solution! I have reached out to several individuals who are affected. If you are a vegan, plan to attend the Oscar Party and did not receive an e-mail from me, please reach out via private message post a note below. I’ll provide details off-line. And while there won’t be a vegan meal option this year, I think we do have a workable solution. And, all other plans are usiness-as-usual: popcorn, sodas, candy, on-site paparazzi, decorations, bar drinks (including your first drink on the house), the Drexel’s Annual Oscar ballot contest, along with the Big Show on the Big Screen and a fun group of Movie Group friends to watch ‘em with!
