JavaScript Zagreb March Meetup @ MaMa
Hi everyone!
I’m happy to announce our next monthly meetup will take place at **MaMa** (Preradovićeva 18) on **Tuesday, March 24th**, starting at **6 PM.**
We’ve got two great talks lined up, and afterward, we’ll head over to **"Old Pharmacy Pub"** (Andrije Hebranga 11) for some casual networking, so as always, be sure to stick around!
\*\*\*
**Test-driving frontend: A real-world example**
by Marko Bjelac
Test-driven development is a little explored topic, especially when it comes to frontend code. During the talk I will explain (shortly) what test-driven development is, what are the challenges when applying it to frontend development and how to overcome them - all the while showing how my team test-drives an Angular frontend with Jest, Angular Testbed & Storybook.
**Oxlint & oxfmt, linting and formatting from the future**
by Matija Marohnić
I prefer faster linting and formatting than what ESLint and Prettier can provide. Biome was promising at first, a single tool that can perform both jobs, but its priorities clashed with mine, so I started to look elsewhere — enter VoidZero's oxlint & oxfmt.
See you there!

Winning criteria: Alongside the main hackathon prizes, GDG Zagreb is awarding a special prize to the team that best integrates Google technology into their project.
To be eligible, your project must use at least one Google Cloud product or API in a meaningful, functional way. The integration must be working and demonstrable during your presentation.
Google technologies that count toward eligibility include Gemini API, Firebase Authentication, Firestore, Google Maps API, Places API, Cloud Vision API, Cloud Translation API, and more. If you're using a Google product not on this list, it likely still counts — when in doubt, ask.
Projects that incorporate Gemini in a meaningful way receive bonus consideration.
What's the theme of the hackathon?
The theme of the hackathon is "Build Something Zagreb Wants".
You'll get more info at the event!
Will there be something to eat?
Yes! There will be pizza and drinks available throughout the event. Please contact us if you have dietary restrictions and we'll try to accommodate you!

Do I need to be a developer?
Absolutely not! As long as you have an open mind and enjoy building with Cursor, please come!
Do I need to be from Croatia?
Not necessarily.
Due to high demand and Cursor hosting many events like this throughout Europe and the world, we prefer local participants who are based in or near Croatia. If you're outside that region, check out other Cursor events in the community calendar!
Do I have to bring anything?
Your laptop, charger and your Cursor account!
Please note that in order for you to receive Cursor credits, you must use a personal Cursor account. It's not possible to redeem credits for Team and Enterprise plans.

🌸Turn Thursday into Small Friday: Zagreb’s International Meetup🌍
Zagreb language and culture exchange meetup. Chat in many languages, meet new people and plan adventures together.
Hey everyone! 👋
As spring arrives in Zagreb and the city wakes up again, we’re keeping Thursdays social with **Small Friday International Zagreb** ([SFIZ.FUN](https://sites.google.com/view/smallfridayinternationalzagreb/)) a relaxed international meetup where locals, expats, Erasmus students and travellers gather to chat, exchange languages, share stories and plan the next adventure.
Think of it as Zagreb’s global living room with lively conversations, and that moment when a random Thursday evening decides to surprise you. ✨
Whether you’ve just arrived in Zagreb, been here a while, or live around the corner, you’re very welcome.
📍 **When & Where**
📍 **The Beertija**
Pavla Hatza 16, Zagreb
🕗 **Every other Thursday from 8PM**
✨ Free to join: simply grab a drink and support our host bar 🍺🎸
✨ Open to everyone: all ages, backgrounds and language levels
💬 **What Happens at [SFIZ.FUN](https://sites.google.com/view/smallfridayinternationalzagreb/)**?
Expect a relaxed, social atmosphere where conversations flow naturally.
🗣️ La**nguage Exchange**
English, Croatian, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Ukrainian, Russian… and often more.
🌍 **Cultural Exchange**
Locals, expats, travellers and Erasmus students sharing stories, experiences and perspectives.
🤝 **New Connections**
Real conversations, genuine laughs, and the occasional new friend.
📅 **Weekend Planning**
People often end up planning hikes, concerts, trips, festivals or nights out together.
No formal structure, no pressure, just people meeting people.
🌸 **Why Join in Spring?**
Spring is when Zagreb truly comes alive.
Magnolia trees bloom across the city, café terraces fill with conversation, and longer sunny days invite people outdoors. Locals stroll through parks, cycle along the Sava, run around Jarun and Bundek lakes, or escape to the nearby Medvednica mountain for hikes and views above the city.
At the same time, Zagreb’s cultural calendar blossoms with exhibitions, concerts, festivals and theatre performances, while markets like Dolac overflow with seasonal produce: asparagus, wild garlic, strawberries and fresh flavours of the season.
It’s the perfect time to meet people and explore the city together.
And many of those plans begin right here, at [SFIZ.FUN](https://sites.google.com/view/smallfridayinternationalzagreb/). 🌍
🍺 **Why The Beertija?**
Because it’s more than a bar, it’s our headquarters.
Expect:
🌿 leafy terrace vibes
🎸 rock-inspired atmosphere
🍺 excellent beers
🛋️ relaxed living-room energy
🚭 non-smoking indoor space
It’s the kind of place where you pop in for one drink and suddenly realise the evening flew by.
💡 **First-Timer Tip**
If it’s your first time:
👋 arrive early
🙂 smile and say hello
💬 jump into a conversation
Everyone was new once and that’s how all starts.
🌍 **Join the Crew**
[SFIZ.FUN](https://sites.google.com/view/smallfridayinternationalzagreb/) is a community built by the people who show up.
So if your Thursday evening could use a little more conversation, laughter and international energy, come by and join us.
Bring a friend if you like, or come solo and meet new ones.
✨Ditch the screen, grab a drink, meet the world🌍
See you on Small Friday! 🍻
**SFIZ Crew**
P.S. Spread the word
https://sites.google.com/view/smallfridayinternationalzagreb
🔎 **How to Spot Us**
New here? Best trick is to swing by right at the start, that’s when it’s easiest to find the crew and jump straight in, or ask the bar staff about the event ✨
Need quick updates or can’t see us straight away? No worries, our [WhatsApp group](https://sites.google.com/view/smallfridayinternationalzagreb/faq/sfiz-whatsapp-guide-keeping-it-fun-and-respectful) is where you can ask quick questions.

RubyZG March meetup @ BIZkoshnica
Hello Rubyists!
This month, we're turning our attention to AI and the many ways it's already changing how we work and build with Ruby and Rails.
Our meetup will have 3 shorter talks so we can get more perspectives how different developers and companies use AI.
A big thank you to [RubyCentral](https://rubycentral.org), in partnership with [GitHub](https://github.com), for making this event possible and for graciously covering the cost of the venue. Their support helps us keep events like this going.
After the talks, we'll keep the evening going with the unofficial part of the meetup at the nearby cafe, so stick around for a drink and continue the conversation.
See you at BIZkoshnica!

**Keeping AI Agents in a Sandbox**
by [Marko Avlijaš](https://www.linkedin.com/in/marko-avlijas/)
This talk is about building a safer environment for AI agents. Since an LLM agent cannot be fully trusted, the goal is to limit what it can access and what damage it can do. The agent runs inside a Firecracker microVM and a Podman container, with access only to approved data and services.
The talk will also give a simple overview of isolation in containers and virtual machines. It will cover the basic ideas behind namespaces and cgroups, touch on past escape vulnerabilities, and explain how auditing can help detect suspicious behavior.
**To vibe, or not to vibe, is that the question?!**
by [Iskren Nemet](https://www.linkedin.com/in/izkreny/)
As it is almost impossible to hide from the AI tsunami, what can you do if you actually want to learn fundamental and advanced programming techniques, and not just be another AI agent shepherd? Let's pair up with Socrates and examine together what options are on the table and how we can use them inside our Ruby and Rails world via VS Code, the most standard and popular code editor today, and its AI fellow: GitHub Copilot.
**Wanna upgrade your agent flow?**
by [Fran Zekan](https://www.linkedin.com/in/zekan/)
We all probably tried some form of Copilot AI autocomplete, most of us probably at least tried agents. But what about those mythical "10/20/50x speed improvements"? How do you "spend $1000+ in token in a month"?. "How is this actually helping you"? The goal of this talk is to show a couple of tricks / hacks for how to use agents to work *smarter.*

No kako ono izgleda u praksi – *u učionicama, projektima i radu s učenicima*?
Razgovarat ćemo i o novom nastavnom kurikulumu povezanim s *umjetnom inteligencijom*, u čijoj izradi Antonija sudjeluje.
Ako vas zanima kako izgleda **STEM obrazovanje iz prve ruke** – i kako možemo potaknuti nove generacije na *znanost, tehnologiju i kreativno razmišljanje* – **pridružite nam se**.
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
Zrinka i Josip pozvat će nas u **“Kozmos na karlovački način”** i pokazati kako približiti *svemir* u učeničke klupe, te kako u praksi objašnjavaju *odnose planeta u Sunčevom sustavu*.

Thomas Künneth: Climbing the Codeberg
Hallo liebe Java User Group Mitglieder!
* 17:45 Uhr: Einlass
* 18:15 Uhr: Talk
* ab 19:00: Ausklang des Abends
Dank an [codecamp:n](https://www.codecamp-n.com/) für Location, Bier und Pizza!

As developers increasingly prioritize privacy, digital sovereignty, and true open-source values, many are questioning their reliance on corporate-owned platforms like GitHub. Enter Codeberg—a community-driven, non-profit Git hosting platform funded by donations and powered by Forgejo. But is the grass really greener, and how difficult is the transition?
In "Climbing the Codeberg," we’ll explore both the philosophical motivations and the practical realities of leaving GitHub. Walking through a firsthand developer's journey, this talk will guide you through the process of establishing your code’s new home and taking back control of your workflow.
In this session, we will cover:
* The "Why": Understanding the fundamental differences in philosophy and legal structure between a corporate-owned giant and a non-profit, community-led alternative like Codeberg.
* Safe Migration Strategies: Step-by-step insights on migrating repositories (including metadata like issues and releases), proving your identity via Mastodon, and utilizing "tombstoning" techniques to avoid critical security risks like namespace hijacking on your old GitHub account.
* Restoring Automation: Leaving GitHub doesn't mean leaving CI/CD behind. We'll dive into leveling up your new environment by setting up local Codeberg Actions runners, exploring both containerized (Docker) approaches and host-level (act_runner) configurations for architectures like Apple Silicon.
Whether you are ready to make the full leap to a community-owned forge or simply want to explore what true digital sovereignty looks like, this session will equip you with the tools, commands, and insights needed to successfully summit the Codeberg.

Using Philosophy to Cope with Current Events
So this month's prompt is more general. I think we can all agree that we are living in "unique" times that require coping skills. I think that one role and/or purpose of philosophy is to help us deal with our daily lives and our "unique" times. So, let's share our feelings and thoughts about which philosopher/philosophy we turn to in order to deal with our crazy events. Who/what helps you stay focused in your daily life and helps you sleep at night. I find that Stoicism with a little philosophical pessimism mixed in goes a long way in helping me deal with what I see as very destructive, fearful and mean spirited public policies at both the state and federal levels. Hope to see you on March 28th!
