You may suffer from High Altitude Sickness in the beginning days of your Tibet trip. But don’t worry too much, **the high altitude can be acclimatized usually in 2\~3 days**. Our suggestion is to take a physical examination and get suggestions from your doctor, and medicines like aspirin is helpful to ease the headache. (drinking coke is also helpful). While in Tibet, you should **keep warm all the time**, avoid running, drink more water and eat more vegetables and carbohydrates. We suggest you to not take showers during the first day after your arrival at Tibet. If you don’t feel well, get help from your tour guide or go to the hospital without any delay.

Mar 8【 Decode Old Shanghai】Yuyuan Road CityWalk & Paramount Afternoon Tea Dance
Walk, discover, and dance through time! Our curated Yuyuan Road Heritage Walk brings you face-to-face with Shanghai’s past, from hidden Jewish architecture to the former homes of its most influential figures. The adventure culminates with an elegant Afternoon Tea Dance, where you can waltz (or sip) just like they did in the 1930s.
**Route Highlights**
✅ 17 points of interest spanning Republican-era villas to hidden lane houses
✅ Untold stories of educators, musicians, industrialists & political legends
✅ Architectural journey: Western-style gardens, Jewish residences & Art Deco gems
✅ 1.7km flat stroll ending with a glamorous Paramount Tea Dance experience
**Some of The Historical Treasures You'll See**
**1\. Former Residences of Known Figures**
Walk in the footsteps of the educators, industrialists, and political figures who built modern China. Their former homes are not just buildings. They are the silent witnesses to the ideas, ambitions, and power struggles of Shanghai's golden age.
Cai Yuanpei is the revolutionary President of Peking University, he championed academic freedom and synthesized Chinese and Western thought. His home symbolizes the birth of modern Chinese humanities.
He conducted the introduction of Western classical music into the Chinese mainstream. His home was a note in Shanghai's symphony of cultural fusion.
He turned modern psychology into a new philosophy of education, championing the idea that learning should start with understanding the child's mind.
A warlord who controlled China's government from Beijing. In Shanghai, he was beyond the reach of his rivals, using this home to secure funds, forge alliances, and plan his next move in the nation's complex power game
***And many others to explore...***
**2\. Jinyuan Garden**
Jinyuan Garden embodies modern China’s dramatic story. It was the mansion of a leading capitalist family before becoming the celebrated barracks of the revolutionary "Good Eighth Company," symbolizing a complete historical transformation.
**3\. Lane 749\, Yu Yuan Road**
**Spy's Den**
Built in the 1930s for wealthy elites, its maze-like design later made it a notorious nest for secret agents and wartime collaborators. Today, every corner whispers stories of intrigue and survival from the city's most turbulent decades.
**4\. Yuguang Village**
Built in 1938, it was one of Shanghai's earliest and most notable "New-Type Lane Houses". It moved away from traditional, cramped lanes toward more modern living with private gardens, better ventilation, and planned greenery. It catered to the city's rising middle-class professionals.
Founded in 1866, this was Shanghai's emergency room during its most explosive growth. Here, missionaries and the first Chinese doctors battled cholera outbreaks, pioneered life-saving surgeries, and wrote the first rulebook for public health in a crowded, chaotic metropolis.
**5\. Jewish Architecture**
The Jewish architecture on Yuyuan Road is a direct legacy of Shanghai's role as a haven for Jewish refugees fleeing the Holocaust in the late 1930s-1940s.
These apartments and villas housed a vibrant, resilient community that became an integral part of the neighborhood, adding a unique layer to Shanghai's multicultural identity.
**6\. The Broadway Mansion**
A historic, neo-classical building, overlooking the Huangpu River. It was one of the most famous and luxurious multi-functional entertainment palaces in 1930s Shanghai, known as "the city's first building of entertainment."
Opened in 1930, it was the symbol of Shanghai's golden jazz age and decadent nightlife before WWII. It catered to wealthy foreigners, socialites, and the Chinese elite.
**7\. Paramount Guided Tour& Afternoon Tea Dance**
The walk culminates in a guided interior tour of the legendary ballroom, where the Paramount’s staff will escort you through the Art Deco halls and recount tales from its golden era.
When it opened in 1933, it was advertised as "the finest ballroom in the Far East." It instantly became the most prestigious and luxurious nightclub in Shanghai, a city already famous for its nightlife.
We'll end our journey with a classic afternoon tea, snacks and even a dance here before the tour concludes.

COUNT Discussion Meeting: Topic: Current Events
We may pick a specific topic and post in advance or may discuss current events and various ad hoc topics . We would love to spend time hanging out and getting to know one another.
Atheist, agnostics, other non-theists, and atheist-friendly people are welcome to join us.
Note: COUNT operates a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/groups/COUNT.discussions (http://www.facebook.com/groups/COUNT.discussions/) to promote discussions among members and visitors.
COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above.
There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change.
The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/).
Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers.
For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.
