Merri creek, Dights Falls and Studley Park boathouse stroll and indulgence 10km
🌿 **The Social Stroll Plan**
Date & Time: 27 December, 1pm
Start/Finish: Rushall Station car park (station entrance)
Distance/Duration: ~10km, ~3 hours (leisurely pace with stops)
🚶 **Segment 1: Rushall Station → Merri Creek Circuit**
- Kick off with a flirty, social vibe—think light banter and playful “post‑Christmas detox” jokes.
- The Merri Creek bushland offers shaded paths, bird calls, and a gentle warm‑up for the legs.
- Incorporate a “Grievance Alignment Chart” moment: everyone shares one funny holiday grievance (too much pudding, awkward family karaoke) as a satirical ritual.
🌊 **Segment 2: Merri Creek → Dights Falls (Yarra Bend Park)**
- Arrive at Dights Falls, where the Yarra cascades over the historic weir.
- Pause for a mini‑ritual: “Dance of the Falls”—a playful group stretch or sway, channeling the Eat Drink Danc ethos. Yoga instructors wanted otherwise we'll learn Gangnam style dancing from a Kpop YouTube video. This certainly assists in my attempt to start a Korean boy band!
- Snap group photos with the falls as backdrop—badge‑worthy material for your satirical campaign kits.
☕ **Segment 3: Dights Falls → Studley Park & Studley Park Boathouse**
- Meander through Studley Park picnic areas, weaving in bushland and river views.
- Arrive at the Studley Park Boathouse for coffee, snacks, and a cheeky toast to “post‑Xmas drop tour hair and relax vibes.”
- Suggested ritual: “Compliance Log of Indulgence”—each person logs their chosen snack as part of the satirical kit.
🌳 **Segment 4: Return via Yarra Bend → Rushall Station**
- Stroll back along the Yarra Bend bushland, soaking in late‑afternoon light.
- Close with a “Re‑Education Pamphlet” reflection: what indulgence will you drop before the Kokoda prep walk?
- Finish at Rushall Station car park, energized but relaxed.
🎭 **Thematic Layering**
- Eat Drink Danc Melbourne spirit: playful rituals, spontaneous stretches, satirical mottos.
- Post‑Christmas vibes: light detox humor, relaxed pace, indulgence logs.
- Preparation for Kokoda 1000 Steps (Jan 4):
- Treat this as a training stroll—steady pace, mindful breathing, light climbs and dumb jokes and an attempt to create a bachelorette style recruitment drive for groupies for the Korean boy band I'm planning without the swimsuit competition.
- Encourage group camaraderie: “If we can laugh through 10km, we can climb 1000 steps.”
🪧 **Suggested Motifs & Slogans**
- “Falls, Feasts & Footsteps” – motto for the day.
- Badges:
- Commissar of Coffee (for the first to order at the boathouse)
- Dance Marshal of Dights (for leading the falls stretch)
- Studley Snack Auditor (for logging indulgences)
---
This stroll becomes more than a walk—it’s a social satire circuit, a playful ritual of bushland, falls, coffee, and camaraderie, all while gently prepping for the Kokoda 1000 steps climb and walk next week

"Not Really a Cyclist" small urban bike adventure 5km or so.
**🚲 Eat, Drink & Dance Melbourne: The “Not‑Really‑a‑Cyclist” Bike Adventure**!
A super‑chill trial ride for absolute beginners, wobbly riders & the bike‑curious. Give yourself and hour or two to go from wobbly to having a quick ride around some of Melbourne!
For people without a bike try the city based bike hire company[Blue Tongue Bikes (Rental and Tours)](https://bluetonguebikes.com.au/)
Or bring your own.
Ready to see Melbourne from a whole new angle—the bike seat angle—without needing Lycra, fitness, or any idea what “cadence” means? This playful warm‑up ride is designed especially for people who don’t ride bikes… but like the idea of cruising, chatting, laughing, and discovering the city at a very easy pace.
Think of it as:
Eat. Drink. Dance. Pedal (gently).
**🌟 Where We Begin**
We’ll meet at Blue Tongue Bikes, Batman Park (King St & Flinders Lane).
If you don’t have a bike—no worries! You can hire one there for a few hours, or grab an e‑bike from other spots around the city.
If you need to hire a bike please get there 30 to 60 minutes beforehand to iron out all the hiring details with the shop or hire a bike the day before if you go elsewhere.
Just make sure you’ve had a little practice beforehand so you’re not learning from scratch on the day (unless you enjoy chaos, in which case… bold choice).
🌟 **What We’re Doing**
This is a 5 km-ish practice loop around Fishermans Bend, a flat, friendly circuit perfect for building confidence. We’ll roll back into Batman Park at the end—smiling, slightly sweaty, and feeling very Melbourne.
If the group is feeling good, we might extend the adventure toward St Kilda or nearby paths. Totally optional, totally vibe‑dependent.
🌟** **Why We’re Doing It****
This is the warm‑up for a bigger 30+ km Capital City Trail ride happening about a week later. Think of this as the “first date” before the “proper date.”
**🌟** Who It’s For****
- New riders
- Nervous riders
- Social riders
- People who haven’t touched a bike since primary school
- People who want to see Melbourne’s gorgeous bike paths without pressure
- People who want to meet fun humans and enjoy the city in a new way
🌟 **What to Bring**
- A helmet (non‑negotiable)
- Water
- A sprinkle of road‑rule awareness (we’ll mostly stick to bike paths)
- Your best “I‑might‑fall‑over-but-I’m‑still‑having-fun” attitude
Good idea to bring a lock for the bike
**🌟 Pace & Vibe**
Super easy. Super social. Zero ego.
If you’re a bit clutzy, that’s fine—we’ve all been there. We’ll help you out, cheer you on, and keep things relaxed.
Coffee + Make new friends
Grab a coffee and make some new friends. Or just get out and get some fresh air and socialize.

Join us as we get together for an Oscar Watch film that’s also one of the year’s best: MARTY SUPREME! Timothee Chalamet delivers a “career-best performance” in this film that follows a young man with a dream no one respects, who goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness. Marty Supreme has already been named a Top 10 Film of the Year by IndieWire, Vulture, the BBC, Entertainment Weekly, Vanity Fair, the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute and is well on its way to being one of the most nominated films at this year’s Oscars! Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: This ping pong drama is set in New York City during the 1950s where table tennis star Marty goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness. It is loosely based on the life of famed table tennis player Marty Reisman. The film is directed (and co-written) by Josh Safdie and stars Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Kevin O'Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher.
TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYSHiII4D-Y
EARLY BUZZ & REVIEWS: The film premiered to “overwhelmingly positive” reviews at this year’s New York Film Festival! Timothee Chalamet immediately shot to the top of the Best Actor race with a “career best performance” in a film described as an “awe inspiring cinematic tour-de-force!” Others call it, “an absolute blast of adrenaline” and a “pure delight,” “that soars from start to finish!” The film is earning a Certified Fresh 96% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes where Variety calls it, “one of the year’s few masterpieces!” Slash Film declares, “This is unquestionably the best performance of Timothée Chalamet's career, and Marty Supreme is one of the best movies of the year. I can't wait to watch it again!”
PLAN: For MARTY SUPREME at the Drexel, please purchase your ticket for the 3:30pm showing and we’ll meet in the lobby area between 3:10 and 3:20pm! 2026 Kick-Off: SONG SUNG BLUE or ANACONDA at Lennox Phoenix Theater!
Join us as we kick the New Year with a fun Happy Hour and your choice of two fun, new films! Option 1 is the biographical-musical-docu-drama, SONG SUNG BLUE, which stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson in the story about a real-life couple and Neil Diamond Tribute Duo. Option 2 is the comedy-action-adventure ACACONDA, which stars Jack Black and Paul Rudd as part of a group of friends remaking a favorite movie from their youth. Here’s a complete description, trailer and our plan for this event:
SONG SUNG BLUE: The film follows Lightning and Thunder, a Milwaukee husband and wife Neil Diamond tribute act, who experience success and heartbreak in their musical journey together. Not a tribute to Neil Diamond, but a tribute to a Neil Diamond Tribute Band! The film is based on the 2008 documentary of the same name and is directed by Craig Brewer. It stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, along with Michael Imperioli, Ella Anderson, King Princess, Mustafa Shakir, Hudson Hensley, Fisher Stevens and Jim Belushi. Critics call the film, “a crowd-pleaser with a ton of heart!” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCM0Ztp3o1o
ANACONDA: In this action-thriller-comedy-adventure, a group of friends going through a mid-life crisis head to the jungle to remake a favorite movie from their youth but encounter “unexpected events.” The film is directed by Tom Gormican and stars Jack Black, Paul Rudd, Selton Mello, Daniela Melchior, Thandiwe Newton and Steve Zahn. The film is a reimagining of the 1997 original. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMsFsfrPNaw

We’ll confirm the details and exact meeting time once we get the showtimes, but planning for 5 to 5:30pm for the Happy Hour and a 7pm-ish showing of both films. For the movies, we’ll meet inside the lobby area about 20 minutes before showtimes! Once showtimes are announced, advance ticket purchase is advised. Oscar Watch International: THE SECRET AGENT at the Gateway Film Center!
Join us as we get the New Year started with one of the best films of the year: THE SECRET AGENT! This political thriller from Brazil is set in 1977 where a man flees from a mysterious past and returns to his hometown but soon finds the city is far from being the refuge he seeks. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event:

BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The Secret Agent was the most awarded film at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival where it won Best Actor for Wagner Moura, Best Director for Mendonça Filho, the Art House Cinema Award and the FIPRESCI Prize. At this year’s Golden Globes, it became Brazil’s first film ever to be nominated for Best Film (Drama)! It also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Film, a Best Actor nomination for Wagner Moura and was selected as Brazil’s entry for Best International Film at this year’s Academy Awards. The film is receiving an incredible 99% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes where critics say, its “compelling script, impeccable acting, and striking 1970s aesthetic” make it “impossible to look away!” Critics say The Secret Agent is “one of the few standout movies of the year” and the Chicago Tribune calls it a “masterpiece of a film” and “the best film of the year!”
PARKING: Close, convenient parking is available in the nearby garage (located between 9th and 11th, just off High St). Bring your ticket with you and have it validated at the theater and for $2, you’re covered for the night!

Showtime, location and complete details will be confirmed and announced as the date gets closer.

CMG Gives Back: Food Distribution at CHAMPION FOOD PANTRY!
Start the New Year off right! Join us as we get together to help those in need at this CMG Gives Back event to distribute food at the Champion Food Pantry! We’ve created a great little community of Movie Group friends! Rather than see a movie this time, we’ll help “Create a better world” by helping serve people in need. Here are complete details and our plan for this event:
CHAMPION FOOD PANTRY: The Champion Food Pantry provides needed food to neighbors experiencing food insecurity. For this event, we’ll be volunteering to help with Food Distribution during client pick up times. Our group will receive on-the-spot training from some of their seasoned regular volunteers.
PLAN FOR CHAMPION FOOD PANTRY: Please arrive by 2:45pm. Our volunteer time will be from 3:00 to 6:00pm.
LOCATION & PARKING: The Champion Food Pantry is located at 1460 S. Champion Ave in Columbus. Parking is located in the lot on Frebis across from the pantry. Please enter through the door marked "Volunteers enter here” on Frebis Ave. A map has been uploaded to the photos.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Our group will be providing the majority of the volunteers on this day so a firm RSVP count is essential. Please only sign up if you are certain you’ll be able to attend. If something unavoidable comes up, please update your RSVP no later than one week prior to the event. No shows or cancelations within 1 week of the event will mak you ineligible for future CMG Gives Back events. I appreciate your understanding as we try to ensure the agencies have the volunteers needed to provide the essential services they provide to the vulnerable population they serve.

THANK YOU: This CMG Gives Back event provides an opportunity for YOU to get involved in helping others in our community! But the benefits go well beyond the help we give to others. Volunteering can provide a wide range of personal benefits, including positive effects on mental and physical health, reduced stress/depression/anxiety, increased happiness and improved purpose, life-satisfaction and personal well-being! Plus, the opportunity to get involved, connect with others and help those in need.
PARTNER AGENCY: This event is hosted by Lutheran Social Services (LSS), which serves thousands of people in need each day in 27 Ohio counties by addressing the four core societal issues of food, shelter, safety and healing. LSS offers food through the LSS Food Pantries, housing and supportive services through LSS Faith Mission and LSS Faith Mission of Fairfield County homeless shelters, domestic violence services through LSS CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence, senior living and health care, affordable housing communities, and other services that uplift families and strengthen communities.
Thanks for your help and look forward to seeing you there, Dan
