Met deze vraag als uitgangspunt organiseert Meet je stad Utrecht op maandag 15 juni een kennisavond in bibliotheek Neude over de rol van bomen bij het beperken van stedelijke hittestress.** ### De rol van bomen in de klimaatbestendige stad Onderzoeker dr. Daniela Maiullari van de TU Delft vertelt maandagavond 15 juni over de groeiende uitdaging van hittestress en legt uit hoe bomen in steden echt een verschil kunnen maken. Aan de hand van voorbeelden uit onderzoeksprojecten van de TU Delft behandelt ze monitoringtechnieken om stedelijke hitte te beoordelen en bespreekt ze de verkoelende werking van bomen. Ook presenteert dr. Maiullari de nieuwste inzichten over hoe bomen functioneren in stedelijke omgevingen en hoe groene planningsstrategieën – zoals de 3-30-300-regel – kunnen helpen bij het verminderen van stedelijke hitte. De 3-30-300-regel gaat ervan uit dat elke bewoner vanuit zijn woning minstens drie volgroeide bomen kan zien, in een buurt woont met 30 procent boomkroonbedekking en binnen 300 meter toegang heeft tot een groene buitenruimte van een halve tot een hele hectare. *Dr. Daniela Maiullari is universitair docent aan de TU Delft. We are back with two great speakers! 💡 First on stage is **Bart Waardenburg**, the creator of the tool **Fallow.** His tool gained significant traction after it was discussed on the web development podcast Syntax. **Vibe Coding Doesn't Scale: Deterministic Tooling for Agentic Engineering** *AI Slop Is a Tooling Problem* Most AI coding fails in the same way. The model writes plausible code, but it has no deterministic way to check whether the change made the codebase better or worse. We compensate with prompts like "make no mistakes", "follow best practices", or "act like a senior engineer". In his talk, Bart shows where the line runs between AI slop and real agentic engineering. Using Fallow as the case study, he walks through how an agent calls deterministic codebase-quality checks through CLI, MCP, and agent hooks, so engineering standards live in the loop itself instead of in wishful prompts. The agent generates code, inspects the repository, detects dead code, duplication, complexity hotspots, and boundary violations, optionally combines that with runtime evidence, and uses those signals to refactor or self-correct before a human reviews the diff. The core idea is simple. The biggest productivity gains do not come from telling the model to be smarter. They come from giving it a better harness. Bold Penguin - 6555 Longshore St, Dublin, OH 43017 \*\*\*** Ryan Carroll **Local AI in Rails: Fast, Cheap, and Predictable** Rails apps usually reach for external AI services when they need “intelligence,” but that approach can bring latency, cost, and unpredictability along for the ride. This talk shows a different path: running a Japanese sentiment model directly inside a Rails app, using ONNX Runtime, background jobs, and real-time updates to keep the user experience fast and responsive. Using a small app called **Sentiment Omikuji** as the case study, the talk walks through how the model was trained in Python, exported to ONNX, and loaded into Ruby for local inference. It also covers how Japanese text is tokenized, how the sentiment output drives a fortune generator, and why the app uses Solid Queue to keep model work off the request path. Along the way, the talk explores the tradeoffs of local inference versus API-based LLMs, and why classic machine learning can still be the right tool for focused problems. Extensions allow developers to customize the editor with new features, integrations, and workflow improvements tailored to their needs. In this session, we’ll cover what extensions are and the different types available, including full extensions written in TypeScript or JavaScript, along with lighter-weight extensions such as color themes, language packs, language support, code snippets, and keymaps. We’ll also look at practical reasons a developer might create an extension, from automating repetitive tasks to adding custom tooling. The session includes a hands-on walkthrough of creating a new extension, testing it locally, and understanding the basic project structure. We’ll close with a brief overview of how extensions are packaged and published to the Visual Studio Marketplace and other distribution options. **YouTube Link** TBD
