Canoe Camping at Barker Lake
**THIS EVENT IS HOSTED BY JAMES.**
**TO REGISTER GO TO: [Ontario Backcountry Camping | Meetup](https://www.meetup.com/ontariobackcountry/?eventOrigin=your_groups)**
This is a canoe camping trip to Barker Lake. We will be staying on crown land so camping is free.
Barker Lake is about 3.5 hours from Toronto, north of Bon Echo Provincial Park. There are two easy portages along the way, Ashby Lake to King Lake (100m) and King Lake to Barker Lake (75m), both dry and well maintained with some rocks along the path. The parking and put-in is Ashby Lake boat launch, we will meet there at 12pm.
The plan is to camp on King or Barker Lake. We can do a day trip into Barker if we decide to camp on King. If you like to fish, and you're not having any luck, it's easy enough to portage from one lake to another to try somewhere else.
Ashby Lake is mostly shielded from the wind, has a few cottages and light boat traffic, but mostly wild shoreline along the canoe route. The paddle distance across Ashby Lake is about 4km to the first portage. For fishing, Ashby Lake has lake trout, northern pike, pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, white sucker, and yellow perch.
King Lake is a small lake with crown land along most of the shoreline. There are some campsites, and we can camp here if we find a nice site. It's a 1km paddle across King to the next portage. King Lake has rainbow trout and yellow perch.
After the second portage is Barker Lake. There are a few campsites here; one is a nice island site which could be a good spot to camp, and most of the shoreline is crown land. Expect another 2km paddle if we camp here for a total trip distance of 7-8km including portages. Barker Lake has lake trout, pumpkinseed, white sucker, and yellow perch.
Have a way to get here and a canoe or kayak, paddle board, paddle partner with a canoe, something of that sort.
You are responsible for yourself and your own safety.

Blue Lotus Tea & Life Force and Light Language Activation Workshop
This class is a guided life force energy transmission designed to help participants deepen awareness, regulate the nervous system, release stored emotions, and connect more deeply with themselves. The practice combines life force activation, light language, somatic release, music therapy, and meditation in a safe, supportive environment.
Blue Lotus Tea
Blue Lotus tea will be served as an optional ritual element. It is non-psychedelic and only mildly psychoactive, helping participants relax the body, quiet the mind, and become more receptive to the experience. It supports the practice but does not create the activation itself.
During the Session
Participants lie down while receiving a guided energy transmission. Experiences vary and may include:
* Gentle spontaneous body movement
* Emotional release (laughing, crying, etc.)
* Feelings of warmth, tingling, or energy movement
* Deep relaxation or bliss
* Visual imagery or meditative experiences
* Vocal expression such as humming, singing, or spontaneous sounds (often described as light language)
Intended Benefits
Many participants report:
* Greater emotional release and nervous system regulation
* Increased self-awareness and clarity
* Enhanced intuition and confidence
* Breaking old patterns and limiting beliefs
* Improved relationships and life direction
* Greater creativity, resilience, and sense of purpose
The emphasis is on personal growth, conscious awareness, and integration, rather than seeking dramatic experiences during the session itself.
What is Light Language?
Light language refers to spontaneous vocal, tonal, or gestural expression that some people experience during deep meditative or energetic states. It is viewed within this practice as an intuitive form of self-expression that may support healing, communication, and creativity.
Preparation
* Avoid alcohol or recreational drugs on the day of the class.
* Eat lightly (fruit or juice) 1–2 hours beforehand.
* Stay hydrated.
* Meditation or gentle breathwork beforehand is encouraged.
* Integration guidance will be provided after the session.
Who Should Attend
The class is open to adults seeking personal growth and self-exploration. It is not suitable for individuals experiencing psychosis or mania, those under 18, or people in the third trimester of pregnancy.
About the Facilitator
Radia is the founder of Light Body Expansion (LBE) and has facilitated more than 95 classes internationally, supporting over 500+ of students through nervous system regulation, meditation, and energy-based practices.

Drumming Circle & Uplifting Discussion 🪘✨🌍
**NO MUSICAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED**
**About Drum & Soul**
Drum & Soul is a participatory community space that combines drumming, singing, reflection and conversation in one shared experience. Through rhythms from different cultures, collective music making and meaningful discussion around a focused theme, we practise qualities that strengthen both the individual and the community.
This is more than a drumming circle. It is a space where people can grow in expression, presence, listening, and contribution, while learning how these same qualities can be carried into everyday life and relationships.
---
...
**Why come**
Come if you want to grow your expressive capacity, feel more at ease participating with others, and be part of a growing space that celebrates the human in us. Everyone is welcome, regardless of age, background or musical experience.
If you feel shy in groups, that is completely natural. Many people arrive unsure and leave feeling surprisingly at home.
---
...
**How it works**
---
We begin with a short breathing and centring exercise, followed by simple rhythm demonstration and call and response drumming. We then move into smaller group discussion around a shared theme. From there we shift into collective jamming and improvisation, and end with a potluck meal and informal connection.
---
...
**Typical meeting flow**
1. 🫱🏽🫲🏻 Arrival & social time – 15 min
2. 🙋🏻♀️ Welcome, check in and centring – 15 min
3. 🪘 Call & Respond **Drumming & demo** – 20 min
4. 💬 Facilitated **Discussion** on the Theme (groups of five-or so) – 20 min
5. 🕺🏽 Open **Jamming** with multiple instruments – 30 min
6. 🦋 Potluck **dinner** & social time afterwards – 60 min
*This outline is flexible and may shift to suit the group and the space.*
---
...
**Logistics & what to bring**
Our next Drum & Soul gathering will be held outdoors in the park. If the weather turns rainy, we will move the gathering to our usual indoor location (you'll be notified in the comment section of any changes).
Since outdoor seating is limited, please bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket if you can.
Drums are available on a first come, first served basis, and we will also provide plenty of small percussion instruments so every hand can play. You are welcome to bring your own drum or instrument.
We end the evening with a shared **potluck meal**, an extension of the circle where conversation and connection continue. Since the event is free, we warmly ask everyone to bring a small item to share if they are able. Simple finger foods and easy to serve savoury items are especially helpful, such as fruit, veggies and dip, wraps, sandwiches, hummus and pita, samosas, spring rolls, crackers and cheese, or other meal friendly bites. Sweet items are welcome too, but meal friendly contributions are especially appreciated.
---
...
**Cost & contributions**
---
This is a free event. If you are unable to bring food, you are welcome to make an optional contribution toward refreshments and materials by e-transfer to **hooshmandnyc@gmail.com**
---
...
**Helpful notes**
---
No prep needed. Doors open at 3:45 p.m. Please arrive by then so we can start at 4:00 p.m. sharp and keep the flow. Location and any last minute updates are posted on Meetup and in our WhatsApp group. We recommend joining the WhatsApp group (ask us for the link at the venue) for quick notices.
---
...
**Life Between Gatherings**
Drum & Soul does not begin and end with the monthly session. For those who want to continue beyond the gatherings and go deeper, we also have:
• **Advanced sessions** for those who want to go further in drumming technique and explore the discussion themes more deeply in a smaller group
• **Home or café meetups** for simple in-person connection, where a few participants can continue the conversation more personally and naturally
• **Ongoing contact** so the spirit of the gathering can carry into everyday life through our own reflection, friendship and mutual encouragement
Over time, these smaller spaces help strengthen connection, shared learning, and community life between sessions. Ask us about these features for more detail.
---
...
**Why this matters**
Our world is like a sick body, and is aching for a lasting remedy. We believe our special mission here is to nurture one another, define our roles in service to our fellow humans, and become living temples of unity. A meaningful growth unfolds through both self‑discovery and collective effort, and one cannot truly flourish without the other. Come open and prepared to learn, to offer your gifts, and to be strengthened by the power of community.

Stop Guessing: How to Measure and Improve LLM Outputs
Most people use LLMs by feel: ask a question, read the answer, decide whether it “seems good,” and move on.
That works for casual use. It does not work when you are building software, automating workflows, writing important documents, or relying on AI for anything that needs to be repeatable.
In this talk, we’ll look at how to improve and evaluate the inputs and outputs of LLMs using practical measurement techniques. We’ll cover how prompt changes affect results, how to compare outputs, how to build simple evaluation sets, and how math-based methods like similarity scoring can help you move beyond guesswork.
This will be beginner-friendly, so even if you don't know anything about AI, you should get something out of it. However, this will be a little more technical than our intro talks. You do not need to be an AI researcher, but programmers and technically curious attendees will get a lot out of it.
We’ll cover:
* Why “it looks good” is not enough
* How to improve prompts by changing the input, context, and constraints
* How to compare LLM outputs more systematically
* Basic evaluation techniques for accuracy, consistency, and usefulness
* How embeddings, cosine similarity, and scoring can help evaluate results
* Where automated evaluation works — and where humans still need to stay in the loop
By the end, you’ll have a practical mental model for treating LLMs less like magic and more like systems you can test, measure, and improve.
LOGISTICS AND PARKING:
The talk starts at 7:00 PM. The first half hour is reserved for everyone to get set up and mingle. Free pizza and drinks!
The cheapest parking option is to find street parking, which will only cost you a few bucks. Otherwise, park in the nearby veteran's museum lot for $8. It's highly recommended you avoid the nearby $15 garage parking.

Come regularly or just once - whatever you're looking for! Each meetup will explore different topics related to ASL/Deaf culture, and will feature time to practice conversation with one another. Just bring yourself and a willingness to learn!
