SOLD OUT • ST PANCRAS • S3E1: LUCK | Thought Experiments in Pubs
Join us for open minded discussions and the opportunity to learn from other people's perspectives and life experiences.
The theme for this episode is 'LUCK'. We will explore it by way of three original thought experiments (posted in the comments below on the day of the event).
We'll meet at the beautiful Betjeman Arms in St Pancras Station.
Spaces are limited and tickets sell out fast, so get your ticket early if you want to be there!
**THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS** \- posted in the comments below on the day of the event
**[SUBSTACK](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/)** \- read more about this community and other related stuff
**[INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/thoughtexperimentsinpubs/)** \- see what we look like \(including The People of TEiP project\)
**[WHATSAPP GROUP](https://chat.whatsapp.com/DapwAXpnOHO5DRYThobpe4)** \- stay in the loop
**The idea:** A chance to meet and talk meaningfully about thought provoking topics.
**How we'll do it** (timings approximate):
* 7:00pm - Arrive at The Betjeman Arms. You can access the pub either from the street (entrance to the right of The St Pancras Hotel entrance) or via St Pancras Station (entrance from the upstairs train platforms). We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us.
* Organise ourselves into small groups (3-4 people per group)
* Have a look at the **thought experiments** (announced on the day of the event)
* 7:15 - First rotation begins - Talk about the first thought experiment, but feel free to veer off topic.
* 7:35 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the second thought experiment.
* 8:00 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the third thought experiment.
* 8:25pm - Wrap up - hear about upcoming events, feedback/requests for future meetups.
* 8:30 Meetup ‘ends’. But feel free to carry on conversations. We have the room until 10pm and usually a lot of us stay until then :-)
**Notes on the general atmosphere**:
* The vibe is to let conversation flow rather than stick strictly to one topic.
* While we'd like to talk about 'meaningful things', we also see the value in lighter topics, so don't worry about not being 'deep' enough!
* Feel free to suggest ideas for future Thought Experiments in Pubs meetup groups, both in terms of structure and topics to discuss.
**Where we'll meet**:
This group will be at The Betjeman Arms. The nearest Tube station is King's Cross St. Pancras. You can access the pub either from the street (entrance to the right of The St Pancras Hotel entrance) or via St Pancras Station (entrance from the upstairs train platforms). We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us.
**Who should come**:
Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality... etc....
I'm so looking forward to meeting & talking with you in this beautiful location :-)
If you would like to further support these meetups, please [subscribe to the newsletter](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/) and [follow us on instagram](https://www.instagram.com/thoughtexperimentsinpubs) :-)
Thank you!
Cafe Conversations
Come along for lively, interesting conversation about a variety of topics with friendly people of all ages and backgrounds.
There is a list of many interesting ideas for discussion. Everyone is encouraged to choose a question that interests them, to contribute to the conversation and to listen to one another’s answers with respect.
We avoid talking about politics, religion and personal issues. There are always two hosts who make sure that everyone has a chance to speak.
DON'T BE SHY - GIVE IT A TRY, EVEN IF YOUR ENGLISH ISN’T PERFECT!
It is free, and there is no obligation to spend money in the café.
I also promote this via other local websites, so more people turn up than it says on this site.
How to Suffer Well?
Guest speaker Agne Zo explores why we are so quick to avoid suffering—and whether it might instead deepen awareness and change how we understand ourselves.
We live in a culture that is both preoccupied with suffering and uneasy about it—quick to pathologise it, numb it, or put it on display, yet rarely willing to ask what it might be for.
This talk approaches suffering not simply as something to avoid or fix, but as something to understand in its own right. Drawing on philosophical and spiritual traditions, it explores the idea that suffering can change how we perceive and attend to our experience, deepen awareness, and under certain conditions become a source of transformation.
The question is not simply whether we can suffer less—but whether we know how to suffer well.
**Where:** Downstairs room, Square Pig, Holborn (private room)
**NB:** The event begins at 7pm, doors open at 6:50pm. Event ends at 9pm
**Format:** 10-minute intro talk → vote on questions → small-group discussion → share insights with the whole room
**Discounts:** If cost is a barrier, we want to make the session as accessible as possible. If you are a student, unemployed, or on a low income, please feel free to send me a direct message to get a reduced-price place.
**Refunds:** If you are unable to attend and would like a refund, please send me a direct message at least 48 hours before the event.
Unfortunately, I’m not able to offer refunds for cancellations made after this point, as it becomes difficult to reallocate places at short notice.
Coffee shop meetup. No events until there is a replacement host.
Sorry, no events UFN until a stand-in host is found to temporarily host this event on Mondays and Thursdays (see message to members 24 -8-2021). ................A nice coffee shop near Oxford Circus for the group's twice a week coffee shop meetup when there's a host to host the event. Normally there would be a Central London Group sign on one of the tables. I phoned the coffee shop twice (2022) and both times they confirmed that they're open till 8pm. Any questions my phone number is 07706964277 or email ysi240@yahoo.com ...........Bill (organiser)
Again, sorry no events until a stand in host is found as I'm still temporarily not living in London.
No membership fees for this group by the way and all events free.

What To Do About AI?
**This evening has a question at the heart:**
**Can we individually do anything about AI, and if so, what?**
We'll first start with a presentation to lay out some thoughts around the impacts of AI on relationships, (dis)information, the economy, education, and the material world.
Should we go with the flow like a stick in a stream of apparent progress and just try to stay calm, or might we act as beavers and try to do
something about the flow? Part presentation, part interactive Q&A, we'll surface the most pressing Qs.
Then we'll break into small groups, first to debate what we naturally feel is the right thing to do, then we'll switch
and argue the opposite. Finally the room will come back together to see if anyone changed their mind over the evening.
**FEATURING:**
**Nathalie Nahai**, Author, AI Researcher & Artist connected to think tanks and the trends
**Filip Matous**, Marketer dealing with the huge daily impact on creative work
**Sally Ashworth**, MC, Harvard Business Review, Associate Dir., Media & Communications
**SCHEDULE**
6:30 - Doors open (to the lovely Tea House Theatre\*\*, 4 min walk from Vauxhall Station)
7:00 - Presentation and discussion
7.30 - Group debate (we'll break into groups of six or so) - and then swap sides!
8.15 - Reconvene to share thinking
8.30 - End (but you can stick around)
\*\*We'll have the place to ourselves - it can fit 60 of us. **Please note we are promoting the event on several platforms - the meetup list will not show all registrations.**
IF YOU'VE NEVER ATTENDED LPC...
Try us out. Much of the joy of this group comes from the mix of people that attend - whether you're new to philosophy or not. Come ready to communicate - ideas will be debated - and if you're lucky, you might change your opinion on something.
So, rsvp... see you there!

**Event Description**
This is a social event where people have the chance to have a one-to-one conversation with someone they may or may not have met before using a 'conversation menu' (picture attached). A conversation menu is a list of pre-written conversation starter questions which participants use to have a conversation by discussing the different questions. The questions are generally about some of life's big questions and lead to some interesting conversations about important, fundamental topics which we certainly don't get the opportunity to discuss every day. Some might consider our events to be 'small-talk free zones'.
The event brings people together and invites people to discuss topics and answer questions they don't get to discuss on a daily basis, especially with people they don't know. The idea is that the more we talk about topics we don't normally talk about, to people we don't normally talk to in our habitual social circles, the more opportunities, connections and possibilities we create for ourselves. If we discuss different topics with different people, then we achieve different results.
Testimonials for the events held so far include:
'For me it was a brilliant success and hopefully it will be for many others.
It is a simple idea simply executed, asking people to pair up and discuss a number of questions on a list. And it works! Although I vaguely knew my partner, the questions allowed us time to touch on areas that I think we would have been otherwise unlikely to ever discuss e.g. which parts of your life have been a waste of time?'
'Surprisingly good and thoroughly worthwhile. Suggested questions excellent.'
‘I can heartily recommend coming along to a conversation event. The questions were really thought provoking and led to some fascinating conversations. I really enjoyed the evening and I came away with feeling I’d learned a lot from my conversation partner.”
‘I thought it was a very interesting meeting. I thought it was interesting to try to answer personal questions and listen to the other person.’
Vibe Coding: Level Up
Vibe Coding Collective is a global community helping anyone turn ideas into working software with AI. We host relaxed social coding jams in bars, cafés, and maker spaces. Whether you're a developer or have never written a line of code, you'll fit right in!
On June 23, we're teaming up with [Momen](https://momen.app/?utm_source=luma) for a special edition about building full-stack with vibes. It is the visual backend, that seamlessly turns front-end "vibes" from tools like Cursor or Lovable into scalable databases, AI workflows, and secure, production-ready architectures.
## Format 🛠️
We team up in small groups of 3-4.
You'll start by designing and laying out your app by hand, dragging and dropping the screens, deciding how it should look and feel. Then you go from there to vibe-coded backends, including databases, workflows, AI agents, and logins.
By the end you've gone from a blank canvas to a real, working app with a brain behind it.
The goal is to vibe, and learn from each other.
## New to vibe coding? ✨
No worries. We provide simple starter ideas and example prompts so even total beginners can dive straight in without stress.
## Schedule 🕒
19:00 — Welcome
19:05 — Intro from the Momen team
19:15 — Live workshop: Building a challenge app with Momen
19:45 — Challenge briefing & team formation
20:00 — Build time
21:00 — Optional demos (show what you made!)
21:30 — Hang out, network, make friends
## Who is it for?
Anyone! Curious coders, tinkerers, designers, founders, AI-curious folks, and developers. If you've ever wanted to take an idea all the way to a real, full-stack app without writing code, you belong here.
## What to bring
- Laptop 💻
\- Vibes ⚡
## Location 📍
Brewhouse and Kitchen Highbury
2A Corsica St, N5 1JJ, London

Philosophy in the Park 142
Connecting people into Philosophy. All welcome. No previous philosophical experience needed.
**What it is**
Philosophy in the Park is a fun and friendly space for people to come together and have discussions that get deep. It’s a safe space where active creative thinking is encouraged and enjoyed, and where everyone can explore abstract concepts in a way that combines both sincerity and playfulness. Where the most important question is always - what do you think?
**What is Philosophy?**
Philosophy is about analysing concepts. It's thinking about thinking. It's not about empiricism or the physical world (eg Science and statistics). It's about abstractions, concepts and ideas (eg Identity, Morality, Mind and Truth).
**How Philosophy in the Park Works**
* Each hour begins with a group vote on which questions to discuss. You can vote for more than one question if you'd like.
* We then break out into groups, each focusing on one of the chosen questions. The question is just a starting point and it's cool if you go on tangents and end up talking about different things. You're welcome to join in and participate or if you'd prefer to sit back and enjoy the conversation, that’s also welcome.
* After an hour we regroup, take a quick break and then repeat all over again. So across the 3 hours, we’ll break out 3 times.
**Where it is**
We meet at Baroness Burdett Coutts Drinking Fountain in Victoria Park (East Park). It is marked down as "13" on the official maps found in the park.
Please feel free to bring snacks and drinks with you if you want.
After the event finishes most people stay and hang out. There’s a local supermarket to get drinks and snacks, or bring your own. You are very welcome to join us.
**Guidelines**
In order to make the conversations as fun, interesting and productive as possible please follow these simple guidelines:
1. Keep it Philosophical
(No Science, no History, no Sociology, no Evolutionary Psychology, no contestable facts, personal anecdotes etc).
2. Think for Yourself
(No phones, no looking up definitions, no name dropping Philosophers / books you've read).
3. Tangents are Cool
(Don't worry too much if the subject drifts and you don't answer the question).
4. Keep it Succinct
(Like this).
5. Be Excellent to Each Other
(But of course).
Please remember: It's not about debating and trying to win - it's about listening to people and working collaboratively to increase our collective understanding.
**Community**

• What we'll do
Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 10AM on Saturday mornings.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.

10:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour.
11:10 - chat / take off / keep writing.
OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 11A-11:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you!
• What to bring
Whatever you need to be able to write!
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block noise or the occasional conversation by other patrons. Electrical outlets are limited, so charge your devices before whenever possible.
See you at The Café on Saturday!
