🎬Movie: How To Make a Killing - Food & Drinks after the movie 🍿!
🎬 Let’s Go to the Movies (and Actually Talk… or Not)
Whether you're a film nerd, popcorn enthusiast, or just looking for a chill night out with interesting people — this one's for you.
We’re heading out to see a movie together, then grabbing food or drinks after. If the film's great (or terrible), we’ll probably talk about it forever. If it’s just okay, we’ll talk about it for 10 minutes and move on to everything else — books, dating apps, weird dreams, how Toronto keeps getting more expensive, etc.
The vibe is relaxed, friendly, and not too serious. No film degree needed. No icebreakers. No pressure to “perform.” Just come enjoy the film, connect with some thoughtful people, and see where the night goes Click here to watch trailer!
🎞️ **Movie Title + Trailer:** [[Click here to watch trailer!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxBof_p3_es)]
📖 **📖 Plot Summary:** Centers on Becket Redfellow (Powell), who has been cast aside by his phenomenally wealthy family and will go to any lengths necessary to ensure his inheritance.

Improv Class for New Friends
Don't be disappointed if you don't see a bunch of people attending. I advertise this on multiple platforms and the class usually sells out.
\*\*If you don't use Paypal, email me at ralph@socap.ca and we'll figure it out. You can pay be etransfer or with a credit card/cash at the venue.\*\*
Improv comedy uses several techniques to create laughter. These include, creating an atmosphere free of judgement, saying 'yes', active listening, being positive, putting your focus on others, and the importance of play and laughter.
Not coincidentally, these are the same things that happen to us naturally when we are bonding with another person.
In this class, we'll explore these techniques not with the goal of being funny, but with the goal of being people that other people want to be around.
The teacher, Ralph MacLeod, is a co-founder of two independent improv clubs in Toronto - Bad Dog Theatre and Social Capital Theatre. He's been teaching improv for over 30 years. He also teaches these same techniques to several organizations including UofT, Google, Kraft, Shopify and many, many more.
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have!
FAQs and Good To Know....

You also don't have to be single or bring a friend. The vibe of this class is much more 'making new friends' than a 'singles' mixer'.
We usually run to 8:15 so pay for extra parking!

### 🐩 About the Movie
Directed by Christopher Guest, *Best In Show* (2000) is a mockumentary-style comedy that follows five delightfully eccentric dog owners as they prepare for the prestigious Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show.
With a pitch-perfect ensemble cast — including the incomparable **Catherine O'Hara** — the film hilariously captures the intense devotion, neuroses, and unconditional love between humans and their four-legged companions.
⏱ **Run Time:** 1 hour 30 minutes
▶️ **Watch the trailer:**
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94y9n9lNy2Y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94y9n9lNy2Y)

### 💛 Why This Screening Feels Special
Following the recent passing of Catherine O’Hara, this screening feels especially meaningful. Her performance as Cookie Fleck — warm, chaotic, and endlessly quotable — is one of the great comedic character roles of the early 2000s. Watching her here is a reminder of how much joy she brought to audiences, especially us Canadians who proudly claim her.
This is a chance to laugh together and celebrate her legacy.
***
### 🐕 Perfect for Dog Lovers
If you:
* Have a dog
* Love dogs
* Once made your pet wear a ridiculous outfit
* Or secretly believe your pup could win Best In Show
…this movie understands you. Deeply.
Expect pure-bred chaos, competitive spirit, and surprisingly heartfelt moments about the bonds we share with our pets.
***
### 📍 Meetup Details
* **Arrive by 3:25PM** so we can gather before heading in.
* Look for **Nick and a Meetup sign outside Auditorium 4** before and after the movie.
* We’ll hang out briefly afterward to share favourite lines and moments.
Low-cost. Big laughs. Lots of dogs.
Hope you’ll join us! 🐶✨
Remember you can just show up if unsure of your schedule

TABLE READS + Story Craft & Drinks
https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/1/2/c/600_450140780.jpeg
We're getting together with Writers and Actors to read full scripts, and give feedback. Discussions on the craft of good storytelling are a big part of the evening.
We sometimes 'break' stories with writers - arming them with index cards, working with them to identify key moments in their script, sharpen character objectives, and seek greater conflict to increase stakes in the story.
Our goal is to incubate new work, and help writers take their script to the next draft (and beyond).
If you would like to have your script read, or 'break' your story idea with the room, please message Jarrett Rusnak.
Beer, wine, and snacks will be served.
We request a small PWYC to cover expenses.
Fast Friending: Meet new friends! (21-40/Happy Hours/Bring a lady free)

Through a series of quick, guided meetups, you'll have the chance to spark authentic moments with many different people — all in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

\*You can use any debit or credit card to purchase your ticket at PayPal checkout. It will ask you for your email address but that is only to send you a receipt. You do not need a PayPal account.
EVENT COST:
Early Bird - CAD$ 10 per person
Regular Ticket - CAD$ 15 per person
Cash at meetup - If you have not purchased your ticket in advance then you can pay CAD$ 20 cash when you meet Faye at the venue.
**Our venue for the evening** \- We have a reserved area where our members can meet each other in a supportive environment\.
**Here's how your evening is planned -**
\- We will meet at 7\.00 pm when you will be welcomed by your host Faye\. She will manage the evening and also help you make connections\.
If you are a bit shy or anxious then please come early. Faye will help you meet other members in a small group and help you settle down and get comfortable. All attendees are also welcome to bring a lady friend along with them for free. This will make it a lot less stressful for you as you will always have your friend alongside.
\- From 7\.30 to 8\.30 pm\, we will start 'Fast Friending' where our host will ask you to speak to a different attendee every 3 minutes\. You will be able to meet lots of ladies and gentlemen and not be limited to only those sitting or standing next you\.
\- After 8\.30 pm you will have time to interact with those you have met as well as others\.
\- We are not a close knit tight group\. Our evenings are warm and comfortable for members attending for the first time and those coming alone\. You will not feel alone\!
\- We have many groups in this city\. Members of our other groups who RSVP are included as guests of the organisers in order to give you an indication of expected people\.
\- This evening is for ladies and gents in the 21 to 40 age group\. While some will be at the younger end of this range there will also be others at the other end of the range and lots in\-between\! You will naturally gel with others of your own age range and so you will always find many attendees who fit your range\.
\- We are not a 'dating' group\. We are focused on helping ladies and gents meet other like minded ladies and gents\. You will generally find a good gender balance \(maybe not perfect\) at all our events\.
**Why do we have tickets?**
1. Cover our costs - Our host is compensated for their time and work. We also pay meetup and have dedicated staff to manage our events, hosts, venues and communication.
2. Group Safety - By securing your ticket we have a record and you contribute to a well organized evening where everyone is more committed and better behaved.
3. Management - Tickets help us better manage attendee group size, book suitable space and activity.

🚊✨Ride: The Eglinton Crosstown Adventure + Brunch! 🥂🥞
# 🚊✨ FIRST RIDE: The Eglinton Crosstown Adventure + Brunch! 🥂🥞
We’ve waited YEARS for this moment… and now it’s finally here.
So let’s do something a little different. A little unique. A little “only our group would do this.” 😄
We’re riding the **first stretch of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT** from **Kennedy Station to Eglinton Station** — about a 40-minute ride (fingers crossed 🤞). And we’re not rushing. We’re not commuting. We’re not stressed about missing our stop.
We’re just… riding. 🚊💛
Sitting back. Taking it all in. Watching the city glide by. Chatting. Laughing. People-watching. Experiencing a brand-new piece of Toronto history together.
Because honestly? There’s something kind of magical about riding transit with no agenda — just connection and curiosity.
And when we arrive?
We reward ourselves with **brunch at The Pickle Barrel**. 🍳🥓☕
👉 **Pickle Barrel** **Menu:** [Click Here!](https://www.picklebarrel.ca/en/menu.html?s=3558)
New train. Great company. Brunch.
Tell me that’s not a perfect weekend plan.

Il Sorpasso (The Easy Life)
A classic Italian road comedy that was so good the film ministry recognized it as "culturally significant." Starring Vittorio Gassman and Jean-Louis Trintignant, the film shows that for young men in love the rules of the road are only suggestions. And the rules for love? Hey, this is an Italian picture! Oh to be young and filled with joie de vivre or la dolce vita.
A french/italian fun filled movie with a surprising twist at the end.
Do you have a fun memory from your youth?
Location TBD, but it will be in person for sure!

Oscar International Nominee: SIRAT at the Gateway Film Center
Join us as we get together to see SIRAT, an Oscar-nominated Best International Film from Spain that follows a father, accompanied by his son, goes looking for his missing daughter in North Africa. Here’s a description, trailer and our plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: A father, accompanied by his son arrive at a rave deep in the mountains of southern Morocco while searching for his daughter who vanished months ago at one of these endless, sleepless parties. As their search continues, the journey forces them to confront their own limits. The film is directed by Oliver Laxe and stars Sergi Lopez, Bruno Nunez Arjona and Richard Bellamy.
TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww-IXHXvS70
BUZZ & ACCLAIM: SIRAT has already won numerous awards, including 4 at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, along with the Chicago, Montclair and Toronto International Film Festivals! It also earned a whopping 11 nominations at the 40th Goya Awards, including Best Film and Director, and was nominated for Best International Feature Film and Best Sound at this year’s Academy Awards. The film is earning a stellar 92% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes which calls it “an unforgettable exercise in tension” and “a brutal reminder that the journey can be more important than the destination.”
PLAN: We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing and will confirm/announce details as the date gets closer. Once showtime is confirmed, advance purchase (via GFC website preferred) is advised! Once you have your ticket, please list your seat number in the Comments section of this event.
PARKING: Close, convenient parking is available in the nearby garage (located between 9th and 11th, just off High St). Bring your ticket with you and have it validated at the theater and for $2, you’re covered for the night!
Look forward to seeing you there, Dan

We currently meet near route 23 and Polaris Parkway, and this is close to areas like Powell, Lewis Center, Worthington, and parts of Westerville and Columbus.
Feel free to bring your own games or play one of the many games our members bring. If you are inexperienced, we will help you learn.
Here are just a few examples of the kind of games we play.
Tabletop/board games: Splendor, Catan, Azul, Dominion, 7 Wonders…
Social deduction games: Code Names, Chameleon, Werewords…
IMPORTANT:
1. While we love playing a variety of games and competing, we are not just about the games. We interact and talk while playing, and this leads to a lot of laughter and fun. If you just want to compete and focus solely on the game, then this is probably not the group you are looking for.
2. Many people join groups like this and never (or rarely) show up after weeks or months. If you join and never really come, we will eventually remove you from the group as a courtesy to our members. Why? Because limiting group conversations (on the app) to regular members makes communication and planning much easier. Also, while it may be rare, it protects members from people who join because they are interested in following a person instead of having a real interest in our group. If you get removed, it is just because you haven’t come, and we follow this protocol as a courtesy to our regular game players.
Fun Friday: EPiC: ELVIS PRESLEY IN CONCERT at Lennox Phoenix Theater!
Join us for something different as we get together to see EPIC: ELVIS PRESLEY IN CONCERT! While researching his 2022 film, director Bas Luhrmann came across and compiled rare and previously unseen interviews and videos of Elvis in concert to create “one of the most exciting concert films you’ve ever seen!” Here are details, a trailer and our plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: Part documentary, part concert film, the latest from director Bas Luhrmann is a follow-up to his 2022 film starring Austin Butler. While researching the film, he came across 68 boxes of previously unseen interviews, concert performances and outtakes from previous films. A combination of offstage and onstage Elvis, comes a film that “befits the magnitude of Elvis as a performer but also offers deeper revelations of his humanity and inner life." It is written/directed by Baz Luhrmann (ELVIS, MOULIN ROUGE, THE GREAT GATSBY) and stars the legendary Elvis Presley!
TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmqWusmzp0k
BUZZ AND ACCLAIM: The film screened at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival where it was the runner up in the category People’s Choice Award for Documentaries. Next Best Picture says, “Certain to energize longtime fans and generate new ones for generations to come, EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert is a masterwork of montage.” And according to the NY Post, whether you have a room in the house devoted to Elvis or not, this truly “Epic” concert film is an energizing experience!”
PLAN: We’ll plan for a pre-show bite at nearby BRAVO around 5 or 5:30pm followed by a 7pm-ish showing on one of their larger screens. Once showtime is announced, advance ticket purchase is advised. Please list your seat number in the Comments below. Exact showtime and meeting details will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer.
Look forward to seeing you there, Dan
