Na SiĂşlĂłirĂ Culture: Trip to An GĂłilĂn Traditional Singers' Club
Although little known, this is one of the cultural gems of modern Dublin. An GĂłilĂn means an inlet and implies a quiet refuge from storm or noise (similar to 'Cuan'), and of course it's the name of the west Cork village known in English as Goleen.
There are no instruments or microphone, just 'a capella' singing. Everybody will be asked if they'd like to sing. Songs are traditional/historic and sung in Irish or English, and often in both (macaronic songs). The club motto is 'We have no standard in singing, just in listening. _FĂĄilte is fiche roimh chĂĄch._

Philosophy Bootcamp | Becoming Stoic | Clarity & Strength in Adversity
**The workshop will include: a class, practices and roundtable dialogues**
It is in adversity that we can test and develop our inner tools, which help us to overcome the small and great crisis of life with more dignity and honour. Developing these qualities was fundamental for the Stoics. As it not only gives meaning to our life, but allows us to become an example and force of change to the world around us.
In this workshop, we will explore the key teachings of the Stoics, apply them in practices and conclude with a dialogue.
*There will be a break with tea, coffee and cakes.*
Kilbogget Park Cleanup
Come join me in cleaning up litter in Kilbogget Park in South Dublin.
I will supply a cart, bags/buckets, litter grabbers, and occasionally a dog (for morale). Feel free to bring your own equipment if you have it.
Here's the plan:
1. Meet near the Kilbogget Grove Bus Stop, 3131 at 10:00. I'll be standing in the area with a cart and dog, so should be easy to spot.
2. Collect litter along the path illustrated in the link below in the description. Note we will be going into the trees along the way.
3. Circle back to the starting point when finished.
Note that we will walk in wet grass/mud on occasion and will be handling litter, so best to wear appropriate clothes, footwear and gloves. Please check weather before attending to ensure you're dressed for it.
Feel free to drop in or out at whatever time suits you. I'm typically out for an hour or two or until the area I'm focused on has been cleaned. There is a tesco and cafe near by, so feel free to leave the group for a break or coffee whenever suits.
Feel free to message me with any questions.
See below for the general route we will be walking.

Zazen Meditation + Dharma talk or Kinhin
The meaning of the word zen is meditation, zazen means sitting meditation. In zazen practice we begin to know ourselves, and to go beyond the limits of our personal ego. Within our tradition zazen is referred to as shikantaza, not doing, letting go of thoughts, dropping off body and mind. This sitting meditation is the focus of our practice. Language limits our ability to communicate the true nature of zen; it is something that is better understood
through practice. We are open to everyone interested in learning about zen.
Intro workshop for newcomers is available at 5.30pm each Sunday. The dojo is a sacred place and it is important to be considerate of everyone. We have many people that travel to practise together once a week or once a month. So for that reason it is really essential that we all know the structure of the sitting practise (when to sit, how to do Kinhin, the different bell sounds and their meaning etc), to ensure a silent, safe and meaningful meditation. And it's also great to meet everyone before the sitting practise. And answer any questions you may have.
We have zafus and zabutons (mats and cushions) for all to sit on. Chairs are available too.
Comfortable clothing for sitting, black or neutral tones best.
We greatly appreciate a donation of âŹ5 to cover costs if it's possible for you.
Please arrive 10min before start so 6ish (if you're not doing the intro workshop).
You are very welcome to our dojo!
The 36th (Ulster) Division in the German Spring Offensive, March 1918.
**The 36th (Ulster) Division in the German Spring Offensive, March 1918**
**By Michael Nugent**
Having embarked for the Western Front in October 1915, by March 1918, the 36th (Ulster) Division bore little resemblance to the volunteer Division which left these shores with such bright hopes. Action at the Somme, Messines, Langemarck, and Cambrai had thinned out the originals and with conscription ruled out in Ireland, the ranks were filled with men posted from mostly English Regiments and conscripts. Added to this was the reorganisation of Infantry battalions across the British Army in early 1918, which saw the number of Infantry battalions in a division reduced from twelve to nine.
In March 1918, the Division was part of General Sir Hubert Goughâs Fifth Army and based just opposite the French town of St Quentin. They met the full force of the Kaiserschlacht (Kaiserâs Battle) on a foggy Spring morning in an unfamiliar defensive concept, with many units being surrounded before they were aware what was happening. There followed a fighting rearguard for a week, featuring many acts of heroism and resulting in two Victoria Crosses being awarded to men of the Division.
The talk will focus on firstly, factors which led to the Division being in position opposite St Quentin on that fateful morning and will then develop by following the Division in its desperate rearguard action over a distance of 105 miles. Actions of importance during the battle will be examined as will instances of great bravery. A fascinating story and one never fully examined previously. In the words of Brigadier General Sir James Edmonds, author of the Official History of the War, during the Spring Offensive, âthe Fifth Army bent, but it never broke.â The talk will focus on one vital component of Fifth Army at that time.
Michael Nugent has written four books on the Great War. The first dealt with the 2nd battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers at the Battle of Festubert, May 1915, and the second on the 36th (Ulster) Division in the German Spring Offensive, March 1918. The third, âA Bad Day I Fearâ examines the role of the Irish Divisions at the Battle of Langemarck in August 1917. The fourth, in collaboration with Nigel Henderson, is titled Killester Garden Village. The Lives of Great War Veterans and Their Families. He continues to research service personnel for relatives and other interested parties.
**VENUE: Pearse Street Library, Dublin.**
**Doors Open At 13.40 For A 14.00 Start.**
**Members And Non-Members Of The Western Front Association Are Equally Welcome. Any New Visitors Are Guaranteed A Friendly Atmosphere And A Warm Welcome From A Group Of Like-Minded Enthusiasts.**
**While Entry Is Free, We Would Welcome A Donation Of 3 Euro To Help Cover Our Costs.**
Recession or Resilience? Interpreting the Post-COVID Economy
Is the recession really coming â or is it just ghosting us?
Is it slowly creeping in, or will it never fully arrive?
And where is the drop in housing prices weâve all been waiting for?
In this session, weâll explore these questions and more as we try to make sense of the post-COVID economic landscape: uncertainty, resilience, inflation fatigue, and what might actually lie ahead.
This event will be co-hosted by Cillian, who will help guide the discussion and bring expert perspective to a topic that affects all of us, whether we like it or not.
Looking forward to having you join us for what promises to be a thoughtful and lively conversation.

Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association:
They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other churchâstate issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEAâs early wins and hard lessons, what weâre seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape â and practical ways to get involved.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

Spring Flex Season
**How does a TennisColumbus Season / League run?**
The league advertises the season dates and builds a queue of committed players for the season.
**Kickoff Day - March 26th**
The start day of the season, players are sent a kickoff email that contains important information about the league, the link where your league standings and players contact information. We guarantee 6 playing partners at your playing level, but have been averaging closer to 15+ partners in most cities. The number of different levels we run is solely based upon the number of players enrolled for the league kickoff. Typically we are running a Skilled-3.0, Competitive-3.5 and Advanced-4.0 in most cities.
**Your Task - "Flexible Scheduling"**
After this kickoff email is sent, it is the **player's task to communicate with other players**. Players should work with their partners to find an agreeable time and location to play the match. While TennisColumbus doesn't mandate your playing schedule, it is recommended that players schedule at least one match per week. By request of the players, we started to allow players to play 1 rematch per season. The regular season is all about playing as much as you can. As of Feb. 10, 2026 we've had an amazing 2,017 players play more than [20 matches in a season](https://www.tenniscolumbus.com/info/MatchesInSeason).
**Where to Play?**
Play at your local free tennis courts, tennis parks, condo courts or tennis clubs. The league strongly suggests that players jointly try to pick a tennis court location convenient to both. We provide an extensive list of [tennis courts](https://www.tenniscolumbus.com/TennisCourts), including # of courts, lighting, hitting walls, etc. We strive to keep this list up-to-date.
TennisColumbus sets up a must play dates to push players out on the courts. The final deadline is the date marking the end of the season, at which point players with 3-5 wins (Actually total is specified on the division page) will qualify for a post-season playoff to determine the league champion.
**How to Play?**
Players can use three mostly standard playing formats: 2 out of 3 sets, 2 sets with 10 point super tie-breaker or the 10-game pro set (First to 10, used when court time is limited). On Feb. 2018, we added Fast Tennis 4 game pro set format as a valid format.
**Playoffs**
Each season concludes with a playoffs where players with anywhere from 3 to 5 season wins qualifies for a single elimination tourney. The champion is awarded based upon the league [Prize Pool](https://www.tenniscolumbus.com/info/prize_pool3). Each singles league champion also receives a playing entry into one of two national championships we run.
**[JOIN TODAY](https://www.tenniscolumbus.com/join)**
Full price is $39.95 to play in a season. The earlier you sign up we typically offer discounts during these tough economic times. Just go to the [Join Page](https://www.tenniscolumbus.com/join) and complete the short form. We'd be happy to find you dedicated tennis playing partners.
