SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: Understanding U.S.-Iran Relations
**This talk has completely sold out in advance and no door tickets will be available.**
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Understanding U.S.-Iran Relations,”** on the origins and future of a longstanding conflict, with Vali Nasr, professor of international affairs and Middle East Studies at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, co-director of the SAIS Rethinking Iran Initiative, and author of several books on Iran and the Middle East.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-understanding-us-iran](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-understanding-us-iran) .]
Iran has represented a foreign-policy challenge for the United States for nearly 50 years, with relations between the U.S. and that nation growing more tense and sporadically violent during the first year of President Trump’s second term.
Gain an understanding of what has driven the conflict, as well as what the future holds for Iran and its rivalry with the United States, with Professor Vali Nar, a leading expert who has advised senior American policymakers and world leaders on the region and whose many books on it include *Democracy in Iran: History and the Quest for Liberty, Islamic Leviathan: Islam and the Making of State Power*, and the co-authored *How Sanctions Work: Iran and the Impact of Economic Warfare.*
He’ll start by taking us back to Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution, which transformed Iran into a theocracy ruled by ayatollahs who cast the United States as the Great Satan, an enemy to be defeated at all costs.
Our nation’s leaders often have blamed religious ideology for Iran’s hostility toward the United States and Iran’s willingness to devote so much energy to confronting a nation halfway around the world. Dr. Nasr will show, however, that such an explanation is inadequate, and he’ll explain how Iran’s anti-Americanism also is rooted in its history, insecurities, anxieties, and ambitions.
Professor Nasr will discuss how this anti-Americanism and our desire to contain Iran have shaped U.S.-Iran relations over four decades. You’ll learn how it has led to confrontations in Lebanon and Iraq, as well as to two decades of back and forth over Iran’s nuclear program. It also has skewed Iran’s own domestic policies, deeply impacted the histories of other nations in the region, and brought about war.
We’ll consider what more to expect from this rivalry and what Iran’s future holds. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

DT:DC Lab: Help Test a New Innovation Skills Workbook
**\* This is an in-person event**
Most people only experience finished products. Very few get the opportunity to work on something before it's finished when it can still be shaped. This is one of those opportunities.
Karen Hold, Director of DT:DC, is currently developing a new innovation skills workbook with Jeanne Liedtka, based on over a decade of teaching and working with leaders across organizations, universities, and the DT:DC community. Her work focuses on the five statistically validated skills that help people develop as innovation leaders.
This workbook builds on her work in design thinking and innovation education, including programs at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, École des Ponts Business School (Paris and Casablanca), and Boston College.
For this session, Karen will share a draft chapter of her new workbook for live testing. This is not a polished workshop. It's a working lab. You won't just participate. You will help shape the material itself.
What We’ll Be Testing:
* Whether the exercises actually help people think differently
* Where the material is clear and where it breaks
* What feels useful vs. what needs to be reworked
This is the kind of work that typically happens behind closed doors.
**What You'll Do**
Working in small groups, you will:
* Work through exercises from a draft chapter of the workbook
* Apply them to real situations and ideas
* Share feedback on what is clear, confusing, or missing
* Help identify how the material can be improved
You’ll get:
* Early access to work that is still being developed
* A chance to influence how this material evolves
* Practical tools you can immediately apply
* A behind-the-scenes look at how skill-building experiences are designed
This is a rare opportunity to be part of the process, not just the outcome. Join us if you want to be part of something early, unfinished and actively evolving. No prior experience is required.
**About Karen Hold**
Karen Hold is the founder of Experience Labs and Director of DT:DC, one of the world's largest innovation communities connecting founders, designers, policymakers, and changemakers.
Her work sits at the intersection of teaching and real-world application. She works with Fortune 500 corporations, federal government agencies and non-profit organizations, helping teams strengthen how they think, make decisions, and move ideas forward.
She teaches in graduate and executive education programs, including at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, École des Ponts Business School (Paris and Casablanca), and Boston College.
Karen is a co-author of *Experiencing Design – The Innovator’s Journey*, and her work focuses on developing the skills that enable individuals and organizations to navigate complexity and create meaningful change.

Spring Doubles Season
**How does a NoVATennisLeague Doubles Season / League run?**
We try to run Mixed Doubles Divisions and Non-Mixed Doubles divisions for every season that we kick off. When we don't alway succeed we kick off one large doubles division instead.
**We are bringing back Doubles Teammate matching**
After taking a year off from connecting players with a Doubles Teammate, we're going to get back to doing it. All teammate matching is done ON KICKOFF DAY so we can have the highest chance of making strong teammate connections. This service will cost $24.95. Note that the league does not initiate COVID precaution rules but as always expects players to be respectful of each other and not play if COVID compromised.
**Kickoff Day - April 2nd**
The **start day** of the season, all the teams are sent a **kickoff email** that contains important information about the league, the link where your league standings and other team contact information is. We **guarantee** 6 teams at your around your teams level, but have been averaging closer to 10+ teams in most cities. The number of different levels we run is solely based upon the number of teams enrolled for the league kickoff. Typically we are trying to run a Lev A Doubles 3.5-4.0+, Lev B Doubles 2.5-3.5, Lev A Mixed Doubles 3.5-4.0+, Lev B Mixed Doubles 2.5-3.5: in most cities.
**Your Task - Flexible Scheduling**
After this kickoff email is sent, it is the **captain's task to communicate with other captains**. Captains should work with their partners and the other captains to find an agreeable time and location to play the match. While NoVATennisLeague doesn't mandate your playing schedule, it is recommended that teams schedule at least one match per week. We allow teams to play 1 rematch per season. The regular season is all about playing as much as you can.
**Where to Play?**
Play at your local free tennis courts, tennis parks, condo courts or tennis clubs. The league strongly suggests that players jointly try to pick a tennis court location convenient to both. We provide an extensive list of [tennis courts](https://novatennisleague.com/TennisCourts), including # of courts, lighting, hitting walls, etc. We strive to keep this list up-to-date.
NoVATennisLeague sets up a must play dates to push players out on the courts. The final deadline is the date marking the end of the season, at which point players with 3-4 (Actually total is specified on the division page) wins will qualify for a post-season playoff to determine the league champion.
**[JOIN TODAY](https://novatennisleague.com/join)**
Full price is $39.95 for team enrollment or $24.95 for the doubles partner matching to play in a season. Just go to the [Join Page](https://novatennisleague.com/join) and complete the short form. We'd be happy to find you dedicated tennis playing partners.

April Fool's Fun: Agricultural Research Center Toastmasters Club
No Fooling. Agricultural Research Center Toastmasters is holding a meeting on April 1, 2026 at 5:00-6:30 pm. Come join us as we get a little silly.
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
ARE YOU READY FOR A LIFE-CHANGING, CAREER-ENHANCING EXPERIENCE? The Agricultural Research Center Toastmasters in Beltsville, Maryland meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month to practice our communication and leadership skills. We follow the educational program of Toastmasters International. We have great success individually and as a group.
Our members are from different cultures and backgrounds. Several of us are scientists for the US Department of Agriculture. Others work at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Our members also are tax preparers, translators, and teachers. Each year in the spring we hold a beginners class. The next class will be in March 2026.

Socrates Café Rockville Meetup
Socrates Café meets on the first Saturday of each month. Though this may be considered a "philosophical" group, there are no rules as to what is discussed. Usually, the topics revolve around social concerns, morality, and the first principles of things.
Prior to each meeting we vote online for the questions we will discuss. That way, we will have enough time to ruminate on them and have more in-depth conversations. If you RSVP to a meeting, you may post your question in the event comments section below. I'll send out a survey for voting a few days prior to the meetup. We discuss two questions each night. So you will get to cast two votes in the survey.
When we meet, we break into smaller groups of five to seven to discuss the top two vote-getters. Each group discusses one question for around 45-50 minutes, and we then take a short break. After reconvening, each group moves on to its second question.
Hope to see you there!

Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

...and speaking of breakthrough roles: who can forget the first time we saw Tom Cruise singing Bob Seeger in his underwear?
