Rockville Drawing and Coffee Weekly Session - NOTE: PLEASE use RSVP process!
Rockville Drawing and Coffee Weekly Session - NOTE: PLEASE use RSVP process!
Expect a fun afternoon of drawing and socializing with like-minded artists! Although each Session is 3 hours, feel free to drop in as your schedule permits. This is a casual gathering, and we know that people might only be able to stay a little while -- drop in, and stay, as long as you are having fun, and as your day allows. **Note: about RSVP's, please respect the RSVP process. If you RSVP YES, you are commited and we are all looking to seeing you. If your plans change however, that's OK, but please be courteous and change your RSVP to NO. We are reaching the headcount limit regularly now and it is rude to take a spot and not relinquish it if your plans change... Respect others; don't be rude. Thank you for your cooperation**. All skill levels are welcome -- this is not a competition. This Group and all its Events are intended to be in equal parts, Drawing/Art AND Socializing. As such, conversation is expected and encouraged. ***However, in all cases, please refrain from discussion of Political topics.*** Our goal is enjoyment, in the form of drawing together while socializing, and political conversation is too polarizing for that to happen. We are looking forward to seeing you there! **Note (in parting): Be aware, and keep in mind that our group, meeting as it does at Starbucks, depends on this business's generosity for the space it allows us. As such, please make a point of purchasing something from the business to express our appreciation as a group using their facility. If you are experiencing hardship and can't afford a modest purchase, get my attention discreetly, and arrangements will be made with no judgment whatsoever. Thank you for your understanding... Michael (your host)**

Cherry Blossom Viewing in the Nordics/Language Practice/DC Cherry Blossoms Visit
Cherry Blossom Viewing in the Nordics/Language Practice/DC Cherry Blossoms Visit
Join the Nordic Culture And Language Exchange Meetup group this Saturday, 28 March, from 3-5pm to learn about cherry blossom viewing/festivals and how Hanami (“flower viewing”) is celebrated in the Nordic countries. We’ll learn about Kirsikkapuisto Cherry Park in the Roihuvuori section of Helsinki and the cherry trees planted by Icelandic-Japanese organizations in Hljómskálagarður Park in Reykjavík, Iceland. We’ll also explore celebrations at Kungsträdgården in Stockholm, Sakura Vårmarked in Oslo, and Copenhagen’s Sakura Festival in Langelinie Park. We will then practice our Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish conversation skills. After the Meetup event at the Ronald Reagan Trade Center food court, we’ll make an optional trek (about .5 mile walk) over to see the beautiful Washington DC cherry blossoms and take photos! \*Cherry Blossom season is always very busy with cars blocking roads/traffic, so it’s highly encouraged to use Metro/leave extra time. The Federal Triangle Metro Station (orange/blue/silver lines) is located on-site at the Ronald Reagan Trade Center. The Metro Center Metro Station (red line) is just 2 blocks away. There’s a public parking garage on site-if driving, maybe try entering DC from the east (Anacostia/Navy Yard area).

The blossoms are at their peak between March 29 and April 1. Feel free to visit at times that work for you. For directions, use the What3words app: https://what3words.com/enable.level.fortunate Also, feel free to go at other less crowded times, like during the week, and still upload your photos to the photo album of your best up to five photos. I prefer to park along Ohio Drive if it isn't blocked off. Otherwise, I park in the parking lot closer to the bridge. Having Fun with Portrait Photography
Having Fun with Portrait Photography
For this month of March, this meetup will be focused on how to create great portraits of people intentionally. Rather than guess at settings or struggle with posing, what are the basic steps you need to take to make a nice portrait and have fun doing it! For this class we will focus on the art of portraiture including: * How to "read" the light, so it's flattering. * How to frame your subject so it pleases the subject. * Some tips on how to make your subject feel more comfortable in front of a camera and bring out certain expressions. I'll be having a model for this class and, pending weather, we will hold it outdoors in natural sunlight. For this class you may bring your professional camera or just a phone camera as these rules apply to all kinds of cameras. I'm charging a small entry fee for this to cover costs of the permit needed for area as well as the model being used. Look forward to seeing everyone!

Learn & Play Go-Stop, a Korean Card Game
🌸 This month, we will have a joint hangout with the [DMV Korean Language & Culture Meetup Group](https://www.meetup.com/dmv-koreaphiles/)! 🌸 If there is a waitlist, feel free to sign up for the [crosslisted event](https://www.meetup.com/dmv-koreaphiles/events/313476692). **FOR BEGINNERS** If you've ever seen Korean movies or K-dramas, you may have seen characters play with small red cards decorated with flowers and animals. Those cards are called "hwatu" or flower cards. The most popular game played with hwatu is "Go-Stop". Come to this next Hwatu Hangout (Cherry Blossom Edition!), and learn how to play Go-Stop. It can take some time to orient yourself with the cards and rules, but once you do, there's no turning back. It's major fun. **FOR EXPERIENCED PLAYERS** No Tazza-style deck rigging or hand chopping. Most importantly, *no gambling*. We will play with plastic chips to raise the faux stakes, but that's it! If you'd like to skip the lesson/demo, then please arrive at 2p for game play. **THE PLAN** • **1:00p - 1:40p**: Learn how to play • **1:40p - 2:00p**: Demo Game • **2:00p - 3:30p**: Game play • **3:30p - 4:00p:** Socialize **THE LOCATION** **The Board Room VA** \| Game Bar & Brewery 925 N. Using Philosophy to Cope with Current Events
Using Philosophy to Cope with Current Events
So this month's prompt is more general. I think we can all agree that we are living in "unique" times that require coping skills. I think that one role and/or purpose of philosophy is to help us deal with our daily lives and our "unique" times. So, let's share our feelings and thoughts about which philosopher/philosophy we turn to in order to deal with our crazy events. Who/what helps you stay focused in your daily life and helps you sleep at night. I find that Stoicism with a little philosophical pessimism mixed in goes a long way in helping me deal with what I see as very destructive, fearful and mean spirited public policies at both the state and federal levels. Hope to see you on March 28th!

Conversacion en español (en persona)
While some are still meeting online, this is an in person event. Please note that we have attendees of all levels of speaking, including some native speakers. All are welcome! Also, as we meet at the same time and place each week, many don’t RSVP on the app, so we will likely have more attendees than noted here. Note: if you are asked to pay and upgrade the Meetup app, this is not necessary. You can ignore this and still attend our meetings.
Shut Up & Write!™ Easton Town Center
Shut Up & Write!™ Easton Town Center
We'll meet at The Capital One Café, 167 Easton Town Center, Space A-103. This is in the main mall where the Microsoft store used to be, on your left if you're standing at the bottom of the AMC Theater escalator. Join us on Saturday for an hour of uninterrupted wordmaking! • What we'll do Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 10AM on Saturday mornings. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: 10:00 - SESSION 1: quick intros. 10:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 11:10 - chat / take off / keep writing. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 11A-11:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer. Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you! • What to bring Whatever you need to be able to write! Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block noise or the occasional conversation by other patrons. Electrical outlets are limited, so charge your devices before whenever possible. See you at The Café on Saturday!
