Debate Night: Work/Life balance
Work is a central part of our lives, but how it fits alongside everything else is far from simple. Between professional responsibilities, personal commitments, and the need for rest, finding a sustainable rhythm can feel like an ongoing challenge.
Across different industries and lifestyles, people approach this balance in very different ways. Expectations are evolving, habits are shifting, and what works for one person may not work for another.
In this debate, we’ll explore how to navigate the relationship between work and personal life, and what that means in today’s world. Join us for an open discussion, and bring your perspective!
This debate will follow a British Parliamentary format with eight debaters split into four teams of two.
Participants who wish to speak are highly encouraged to bring a paper and pen. You are welcome to participate even if you have no prior debating experience.
⚠️ Disclaimer:
We aim for debates that are respectful, constructive, and welcoming.
• Respect ideas and people: Listen actively, stay quiet while others speak, and debate arguments, not identities or beliefs.
• Be concise and civil: Keep questions short and relevant; avoid hostility, hate speech, or discrimination.
• Respect boundaries and time: No unwanted advances or suggestive behavior; arrive on time to avoid disrupting the debate.
• Follow moderators: They guide the discussion and ensure fairness.
Looking forward to seeing you there 😊

Therefore, only the people on the "attendee list" can participate in the session.
**Waiting list**: People on the waiting list should keep an eye on the updates in case someone from the attendees' list drops and you get their spot. It's important for the people on the waiting list also to update their RSVP status if they already know they won't be joining the session.

**Improv Session Format**
The session is held in English.
The session has three sections: Warm-up, Scene games, and Cool down.
**Warmup:** Quick group games are played to break the ice and get the creative juices flowing.
**Scenes:** Then we move on to scene games. These are mostly from short-form improv, which can include different games with various gimmicks, like story building, character work, guessing, etc
**Cool down:** One or two short group games to end the session. The rules are explained by the moderator before each game.
There is no obligation to participate in games you are uncomfortable with.
There can be feedback after a game is played. This is so we learn from each other and gain skills and insights.
**Tip**: If you are new, pay attention to the regular players when they are performing and notice small details, like how a stage is cleared before a scene, how to enter a scene, and how to collaborate with each other.
* **Who is it for?**
Anyone interested in improv! We accept participants at all levels, beginners and advanced.
This is a great place to start if you are new to improv. The basics will be explained. We only require the "Yes, and...!" spirit!
If you are an advanced player and have ideas and games to share and work on, please do let us know.
We look forward to welcoming you and doing improv!
From friction to flow: How Isabel Group accelerated what couldn't be automated.
**At [Isabel Group](https://www.isabel.eu/en), the conviction was clear: certain processes could be accelerated with the help of AI. What they needed was support on two fronts, identifying which processes had the most potential, and a partner to help implement the solutions.**
Through a Start AI trajectory with **[Ixor](www.ixor.be)**, they zeroed in on supporting services, procurement, HR, and customer service, deliberately leaving IT Ops & Dev out of scope.
The process started with conversations: talking to everyone involved, understanding what they actually spent their time on, and mapping where the friction was. From there, thanks to the structured approach of the Start AI trajectory, each process was scored on feasibility and impact.
Three clear priorities emerged.
**[Roel Liers](https://www.linkedin.com/in/roel-l-b594631/)** (Head of Digitalisation at Isabel Group) and **[Martijn Leplae](https://www.linkedin.com/in/martijn-leplae-2258341a5/)** (AI engineer at Ixor) share how that journey went:
* **Finding the right processes.** Scoring workflows across supporting services on feasibility and impact, surfacing the overlooked ones, not just the obvious candidates.
* **Making processes AI-ready.** Restructuring and rethinking workflows before building anything, because the quality of the automation depends on the quality of the process underneath.

The unit and the whole: how to construct your poetry pamphlet
[This is a paid event and sign-up via the website is obligatory](https://www.wordcraft-collective.eu/courses/the-unit-and-the-whole%3A-how-to-construct-your-poetry-pamphlet).
After running this very successful workshop in autumn 2025 we are running it again for those who might have missed out the first time.
In this workshop we will explore how to bring together a group of poems to produce a pamphlet or book. We will explore the notion of the poetry pamphlet versus full collection in terms of the function and purpose of each and how they operate. We will think about structuring a body of work, how to sequence poems and what the organising principles might be. How does the placing of poems together change or enhance the poem? How do we build on and around key themes? We will look at examples of published pamphlets and books to consider how and why authors have brought poems together in the way they have, identifying the choices and opportunities available to poets. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own poems or projects in progress to discuss with others in the group.
This workshop is run by poet Paul Stephenson, who has published three poetry pamphlets and one collection.

Nepal has a way of making the world feel bigger—and your worries smaller.
**The route** (high level itinerary)
Day 1 – Kathmandu: arrive + visit a Sense International project
We begin in Kathmandu and, importantly, visit a local project connected to the charity we’re fundraising for.

Travel to the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara—gateway to the Annapurnas.
Day 3 – Start trekking: Nayapul → Ghandruk (1,950m)
A strong opening day through villages and mountain trails, finishing in the charming Gurung village of Ghandruk.

We head deeper into the valley as the scenery becomes more rugged and dramatic.

Day 7 – Himalayan Hotel → Machhapuchhare Base Camp (3,700m)
We reach MBC beneath the iconic “Fishtail” peak—thin air, huge views, big excitement.
Day 8 – Machhapuchhare BC → Annapurna Base Camp (3,900m) + descend to Bamboo
Summit day (in trekking terms): we reach Annapurna Base Camp, soaking in the towering south face of Annapurna and surrounding giants—then start descending.
Day 9 – Bamboo → Jhinu Danda (1,780m) (hot springs optional!)
We drop to warmer altitudes and, time permitting, reward ourselves with a soak in the natural hot springs.
Day 10 – Jhinu Danda → Pokhara + celebration dinner
Return to Pokhara, shower like champions, and celebrate.
Day 11 – Pokhara → Kathmandu
Back to Kathmandu for the final night.
**Who should join**
You love hiking and want a real adventure with a supportive group
You’re happy with multi-day trekking and teahouse living
You can train a bit beforehand (weekend hikes, stairs, cardio) together with the rest of the group
You want your travel to mean something beyond the photos
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a motivated first-time Himalayan trekker, you’ll fit right in if you bring a good attitude and a willingness to be challenged.
**The purpose (and why it matters)**
This trek is also a fundraising challenge for Sense International, which supports deafblind children in Nepal—helping them access communication, education, and support so they can thrive rather than be isolated.
We’ll be raising funds alongside the trek, and every step we take is dedicated to building a better future for children who face a far greater daily challenge than any mountain trail.
If you’re in: come for the Himalayas, the team spirit, and the chance to turn an unforgettable adventure into a concrete impact.
**Interested? **Hit Join and drop a comment with:
your hiking background (even if it’s “enthusiastic beginner”)
what excites you most about Nepal
whether you’re open to supporting the fundraising goal as part of the adventure
Let’s earn our views—and make them count.
Silent Walk in the Forêt de Soignes
We will be walking through the forest for a little over 1 1/2 hours, silently, just noticing the world around us and inside us. The idea is to experience the magic of a different type of walking, The invitation is to slow down and notice what is going on inside you and around you.
Very often people experience a closer connection with nature and with self, with sometimes surprising insights.
*Please make sure you are fit enough to go the 4.5 km distance. We will be walking slowly, but we will not take any breaks.*
We will be meeting at the Hermann Debroux Metro at **14h**. (Exit straight ahead after leaving the platform--on the Loxam side).
If you RSVP as coming, please be on time. We will be starting our walk from there 5 min. after the hour sharp.
There is the renovated Maison de Prieur at the exit of the forest where we could gather for a drink or a meal after our walk, depending on what you feel like.
Looking forward to an inward adventure? Come and join us on **Saturday, April 25, at 14h**
My phone number is 0472 92 11 76, in case you need to communicate with me.

Deep Conversation - Question Chosen in Session
Welcome to our weekly event in the upstairs room of The Sister Café, rue Chair et Pain 3, one block from the Grand Place. Please get there early enough to order your drink at the bar first. Thank you!
After introductions we will collect questions from the group participants, choose one by voting then discuss it for an hour. Then most of us stay for drinks and bizarre conversations.
Past questions have been wide and not confined to academic philosophy:
What is a genuine friend?
Is social media turning us into emotional zombies?
Do we lose some of the experience of things by defining them?
Are we driven by sex?
Is loneliness a personal failure?
Is morality relative?
**Crucially, be kind and respectful and generous** in your disagreements; remember how much you personally enjoy someone else proving you wrong before celebrating your cutting counterexamples.

City Lights (1931)
"The SOB is a ballet dancer. He’s the best ballet dancer that ever lived, and if I get a good chance I’ll kill him with my bare hands." - W.C. Fields
In *City Lights*, Chaplin's Little Tramp meets a blind girl selling flowers who mistakes him for a wealthy man. When he learns that an operation may restore her sight, he sets off to earn the money she needs to have the surgery. He also befriends an alcoholic millionaire who only recognizes him when he is drunk. When the blind girl and her grandmother fall behind in the rent and face eviction, he tries working and even enters a boxing competition to raise the money they need.
Regarded as Chaplin's masterpiece, *City Lights* has been ranked on more than seventeen "100 greatest movies of all time" lists. Orson Welles cited it as his favorite picture.
*City Lights* is available for streaming on Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBOMax, Tubi and PlutoTV. The Columbus Library lists three copies on blu-ray and eight copies on DVD. Watch the movie on your own, then join us upstairs at East Market to discuss the film.
