Canvas and Contemplation: Deep Reflections Through Paintings
Canvas and Contemplation: Deep Reflections Through Paintings
*Canvas & Contemplation: Deep Reflections Through Paintings* **Fee:** AED 30 **Duration:** 2 hours **Format:** Two paintings, one per hour — deep group discussion follows each What happens when philosophy meets paint and canvas? Welcome to **Canvas & Contemplation: Deep Reflections Through Paintings**, a unique gathering where we explore the profound connection between visual art and the human experience. Each session, we’ll sit with two powerful artworks — not to critique them like art historians, but to let them speak to our minds and souls. You'll be surprised by the range of interpretations one painting can evoke — where one person sees despair, another may find hope; where one sees chaos, another finds divine order. This is a space for meaningful, respectful conversation that opens us up to new perspectives and helps us see more — in the art, and in ourselves. Whether you're a philosopher at heart, an artist in spirit, or simply curious about how we see and feel, this event offers a space to slow down, look deeply, and think together. **Come with an open mind, leave with new eyes.**

Silk & Spice | Weekend in Uzbekistan
Silk & Spice | Weekend in Uzbekistan
Imagine a place so beautiful that **conquerors, instead of burning it, bankrupted themselves building bigger domes** and taller minarets just to keep up. Uzbekistan is the Silk Road’s ultimate masterpiece of living legends: two immortal cities, one breathless whirlwind of domes and minarets, and enough beauty to quietly wreck your standards. [https://vimeo.com/215827711](https://vimeo.com/215827711) The Silk Road wasn’t a road, **it was the internet of the medieval world.** Ideas, gunpowder, paper, religions, and the best spices you’ve ever tasted all flowed through these dusty plains. Samarkand and Bukhara sat at the crossroads, grew obscenely rich, and spent every penny on turquoise tiles and gold leaf. The result? Architecture so breathtaking that six centuries later your phone still runs out of storage before your eyes do. Samarkand first: drop your bag and stand in Registan Square as the morning light hits the turquoise tiles for the first time. Three madrassas stare each other down across the sand like rival rappers, their façades exploding in cobalt, gold, and emerald. This was Tamerlane’s capital, the man who conquered half the known world and then commissioned buildings so perfect that the Taj Mahal is basically fan fiction. Gur-e-Amir, his mausoleum, glows under a ribbed turquoise dome that makes the sky look underdressed. Bibi-Khanym Mosque is so absurdly huge that **Timur executed the first set of architects for not going large enough**; the second team clearly got the memo. Then board the train to Bukhara, a city that feels like someone pressed pause on the 15th century. One hundred and forty monuments in a maze of caramel-coloured walls. The Kalyan **Minaret is so elegant that Genghis Khan, not exactly known for restraint, looked up and simply said “leave it.”** Lyabi-Khauz plaza at dusk is the kind of scene you thought only existed in movies: tea houses reflected in still water, mulberry trees older than most countries, and the call to prayer bouncing off ancient brick. Uzbek people have hospitality hardwired. Strangers invite you for tea, grandmothers stuff bread into your hands, and every second person wants to take a selfie with the foreigner who finally showed up. The Soviet chapter left concrete blocks on the outskirts, but the historic cores remain untouched, lovingly restored, and proudly lived in. **Weekend is short for a country this deep, but it’s enough to fall in love.** You’ll leave with the quiet realization that some places on Earth are so beautiful they almost feel unfair. **Uzbekistan doesn’t need filters. It just needs you for one weekend**. **Day 1 // Friday** Meet at Dubai Terminal 2 at 21:30 hrs for a direct flight to Samarkand departing at 23:10. Land in the heart of the Silk Road. **Day 2 // Saturday :: Samarkand** Immigration, quick hotel check-in and freshen up, then straight into the wonders of Tamerlane’s capital: * Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum – resting place of Timur and his dynasty, crowned by the iconic ribbed turquoise dome. * Registan Square – the breathtaking ensemble of three grand madrassas, the undisputed jewel of Samarkand. After lunch: * Bibi-Khanym Mosque – once the largest mosque in the Islamic world, a true testament to 14th-century ambition. * Shahi-Zinda Necropolis – the stunning “Avenue of Mausoleums” lined with glittering blue-tiled tombs from the 11th–15th centuries. Free time at lively Siab Bazaar: taste freshly baked nan bread, stock up on saffron and dried fruits, and browse silk embroidery and ceramics. Optional: unwind in a traditional hammam. Evening transfer by high-speed train to Bukhara. Check in and overnight in the historic centre. **Day 3 // Sunday :: Bukhara** Full morning discovering Bukhara’s treasures: * Lyabi-Hauz Ensemble – the serene square with its pond, mulberry trees and surrounding madrassas. * Mausoleum of Ismail Samani – a 10th-century masterpiece of brick architecture. * Ark Citadel – the ancient fortress and seat of power for centuries. * Bolo-Hauz Mosque – famous for its beautifully painted wooden columns. * Poi-Kalyan Complex – majestic Kalyan Minaret, grand mosque and the active Miri-Arab Madrassah. Late dinner, then transfer to the airport for the return flight via Tashkent. Landing in Dubai Monday at 07:00. **Duration:** Weekend only! **Activities:** Sightseeing and immersion into unheard history. **Accommodation & meals:** 4\* hotels (double sharing rooms), 5\* hotel option available at extra cost. Meals excluded. **Cost:** **AED 3,850 incl. flights** **until FEB 13th.** Past this date cost will change. **Single accommodation:** 380 AED extra. **Specifically excluded:** Any cost related to visas, melas, visit in Hamam. **Visas:** **UAE residents** with 3 months validity of residence visa **are eligible for free entry.** More info: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Uzbekistan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Uzbekistan) *It is sole responsibility of trip participant to secure admission to country of destination.* See you under the domes! 🏰💠 Trekkup Crew [Whatsapp 0504848238](https://wa.me/971504848238) / [info@trekkup.com](info@trekkup.com) [Find all trekkups at linktr.ee/trekkup](https://linktr.ee/trekkup)
Socotra: The Alien Island (5 days)
Socotra: The Alien Island (5 days)
**Day 1: Arrival and Arher Beach** Your flight departs from Abu Dhabi at **9:25am** and arrives in Socotra at 10:40am. Welcome to Socotra International Airport! Your adventure leader will meet you just outside the airport to show you to the car. Don’t worry, the airport is very small, so everything is easy to find. From there, you’ll meet the rest of the Arabian Wanderers team, and the adventure begins! First stop is a homemade Yemeni meal with a lovely local family then off to Arher Beach. **Day 2: Dihamri or Hoq cave, Diksam** On the second day, start with a pre-sunrise hike to a stunning viewpoint for an unforgettable sunrise. Afterward, return to camp for breakfast and choose between two activities: snorkeling at Dihamri Marine Reserve or hiking to Hoq Cave. Dihamri Marine Reserve, on Socotra's northern coast, offers excellent snorkeling. A dive master is available to help with equipment rentals ($5). Expect to see sea turtles, octopuses, leopard eels, and parrotfish. Hoq Cave features impressive stalagmites, stalactites, and flowstones, offering a true wilderness experience with no lights or boardwalks. After your adventure, we'll return to Arher for lunch, then head to Diksam Plateau to see the iconic Dragon's Blood Trees. On the way, we'll stop at Wadi Dirhur, the island's deepest canyon, with palm trees and Bottle Trees growing from the canyon walls. The day ends with dinner and an overnight stay under the Dragon's Blood Trees. **Day 3: Qalansiya and Detwah Lagoon** After breakfast in the forest, we'll leave the high central plateau behind and head to western Socotra. Our first stop will be the charming village of Qalansiya, the second-largest town on the island. From there, we'll make a short journey to Detwah Lagoon, a protected area home to pufferfish, stingrays, starfish, and even turtles. You'll have time to swim and explore the nearby white sand beach. Lunch will be served in a beautiful cave, where a local guide will introduce us to the sweet and fascinating creatures of the lagoon. As afternoon turns to evening, you'll have the chance to watch the sunset over the lagoon before returning to camp. We'll enjoy dinner and spend the night at Detwah Lagoon. **Day 4: Shoab Beach** This morning is all about sailing the waves! Your day will begin with a boat ride to Shoab Beach, which takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Along the way, we’ll likely encounter large pods of dolphins playing in the waves. Once we arrive at Shoab Beach, you'll have plenty of time to swim and enjoy the sun before returning to camp for lunch and some relaxation. After lunch and a rest from your swim, we'll drive to Hadiboh. There, we'll visit the local fish market and shops, take a brief tour of the town, and grab a refreshing juice. Following our time in Hadiboh, we'll head to Delisha. Delisha is renowned for its stunning sunsets, making it one of the best spots on the island to watch the sun go down. We’ll have dinner and camp on the beach for a memorable evening. **Day 5: Airport** We will bid you farewell with a delicious breakfast on the beach before driving you to the airport for your flight home. **Including:** **Meals:** All meals: 4 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 4 dinners **Transport:** Private vehicle, 4x4 **Accommodation:** High-quality camping equipment is provided, including private tents (2-person tents are available for couples), mattresses, mattress covers, pillows, pillow covers, blankets, and portable toilets as needed. Manhattan of the Desert | Hadhramaut, Yemen
Manhattan of the Desert | Hadhramaut, Yemen
Nothing seizes the imagination or satisfies the wanderlust like an exploration of the treasures of Southern Yemen! One of the **oldest areas of human civilization** and often out of reach for even the most intrepid of travelers, the **out-of-this-world architectural wonders** and **lost-in-time lifestyles** of the Yemenis will capture an explorer’s heart. [https://vimeo.com/810003078](https://vimeo.com/810003078) Bordered by the Red Sea and Bab-el-Mandeb Strait in the west, Saudi in the north and Oman to the east, Yemen is a desert country with **no permanent waterways** and continuously elevated with **high and dry mountains of jagged peaks and plateaus**. The highland regions are interspersed with seasonal river valleys surrounded by some of the most uniquely structured villages on the planet, with small towns of a few dozen perched entirely on boulders to a sea of skyscrapers of mud on arid plateaus overlooking deep ravines. Found on the steep escarpment of a broad plateau with sparse deeply sunk wadis throughout, the Hadhramis live in **densely built towns and villages** centred around wadis with **buildings clung to the hillside** or standing on plateaus at heights of 100 to 200 meters above the valley below. Easily the most notable of these villages is **Shibam Hadramout**, the “Manhattan of the Desert”, with a population of nearly 7000 spread among 500 mud houses reaching as high as 11 stories! Built of mud bricks with wooden floors these adobe structures require constant repair to prevent the rains from washing away their mud coatings. **Wadi Doa’n** contains numerous towns and villages along wadi banks, above surrounding terraces, and on top of plateaus with architectural gems that outshine even Hadramout, from the pint-sized **Haid Al-Jazeel** with less than 15 residents atop a boulder to the brightly coloured palaces of Bugshan. The city of Tarim is considered the theological, juridical, and academic center of the Hadramout Valley and is estimated to contain the highest concentration of descendants of the Prophet Mohammad anywhere in the world! Inhabited since the Stone Age and filled with mosques, palaces, libraries, and tombs and most distinguished for producing numerous scholars from it’s many educational institutes. **Let’s go!!** **Day 1 // Cairo to Seiyun** We’ll meet in Cairo for our flight to Seiyun Airport, after arrival and immigration formalities, transfer to **Al-Hawta Palace hote**l. We’ll take a quick visit to Alfalas Palace for photographs before dinner and overnight in Seiyun. **Day 2 // Aynat to Tarim** In the morning we’ll head to the Qaber Nabi Hood Prophet shrine followed by the walk around the Aynat area before lunch. Afterwards we head onwards to the town of Tarim, a Sufi village built in mud. After a stroll through the local markets and Al-Mihdar mosque, we’ll head back to Seiyun. Overnight in Al-Hawta Palace hotel. **Day 3 // Shibam Hadramout** Today we depart Seiyoun with a quick visit to the Al-Kathiri Palace before heading to Shibam Hadramout. Filled with mud constructed skyscrapers, it is known as the “Manhattan of Arabia”. We’ll explore the town in full and take photos for National Geographic then drive to Wadi Doa’n and Haid Al-Jizil with beautiful panorama of the villages and wadis below. Spend the night in Haid Al-Jizil lodge, with a pool view over a village perched atop a boulder! **Day 4 // Wadi Doa’n** After breakfast, start trek down to Hawfah village in Wadi Doa’n. Afterwards we’ll drive to see the many colorful palaces of Buqshan village before reaching Rehab for lunch. With many village stops along the way back to Haid Al-Jizil and sunset before dinner and rest. **Day 5 // Return to Hadramout** Today we will start our return journey back towards Seiyun with lovely stop at town of Hawta. In late afternoon we’ll return to Hadramout for sunset on the skyscrapers before return to Hawta for dinner in our grand hotel for proper send-off! **Day 6 // Seiyun to Cairo** In the morning free time at leisure. After lunch transfer to airport for flight to Cairo and further flight back home. **Level of Difficulty:** Easy with limited facilities. **Activities:** Trekking, sightseeing, cultural immersion. **Duration:** 6 Days. **Room & Meals:** Palace hotels double sharing, meals included, except restaurant meals on transfers. **Cost: AED 9,400** **incl. flights CAIRO - SEIYOUN and visa + permits to Yemen until FEB 19.** Cash payment only during briefings. **Specifically Excluded:** Flights to Cairo, meals on transfers. Rhino Barn Tour @ The Wilds
Rhino Barn Tour @ The Wilds
**Summary** For this event, we will do the [Rhino Barn Tour](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) at [The Wilds](https://www.thewilds.org/), a ten-thousand acre conservation center in Muskingum County. It is the largest such center in North America and one of the largest in the entire world. During this tour, we'll visit The Wilds' rhino herd in their state-of-the-art heated barns and learn how The Wilds' animal management team takes care of one of the largest herds of rhinos outside of Africa and Asia. **The date and time of this tour** We will be doing the 1:00 p.m. [Rhino Barn Tour](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) on Saturday, February 28. The tour is scheduled to last 90 minutes. **What you need to do to attend** Signing up here on Meetup will not get you into The Wilds for the tour. You must go out to The Wilds' [website](https://www.thewilds.org/) and [buy a ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour). Please [purchase your ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour), then sign up here on Meetup so I know how many to expect. **Attendance cap** There are only eight total slots/tickets available for this tour. As I obviously have already bought one of the tickets, that leaves seven spaces for everyone else. If you are interested in this event, I urge you to [buy a ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) at The Wilds' website as soon as possible. Since their website is obviously public, nothing prevents other people having nothing to do with *GOhio!* from buying their own tickets, thereby potentially taking an available slot away from you. **Additional notes on attendance** I have now run several events at The Wilds. While the location of The Wilds and the pricing of the tickets generally leads to small turnouts, the people who have gone have all enjoyed it and were glad they went. If you've never been to The Wilds and you like zoos or animals at all, you are likely to find any tour at The Wilds to be a rewarding experience. **Tickets and pricing** [Tickets](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) for this tour are $95, or $76 if you're a Wilds' member. I've posted screen shots, below, to help you be sure you're buying tickets for the correct event. Wilds' memberships pay for themselves if you go to The Wilds at least twice a year, and [Columbus Zoo members](https://www.columbuszoo.org/membership) get a discount on memberships to The Wilds. I will always run at least two events a year at The Wilds. Tickets for all Wilds' tours must be purchased at least 24 hours in advance of the actual tour. **Cancellations and refunds** Per The Wilds' [Cancellation Policy](https://www.thewilds.org/policies): *In order to be eligible for refund and accrue no rescheduling fees, cancellations must be made at least 14 days in advance of reservation. Cancellations made within 14 days of reservation will not receive a refund.* You may [contact The Wilds](https://www.thewilds.org/contact) at (740) 638-5030 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., or you can email them at information@thewilds.org. **Waiver of liability** After you purchase your ticket, you will likely be asked to fill out a waiver of liability. This is a very short document and should take you no more than two minutes to complete. **Where we'll meet** We will meet at The Wilds, whose actual address is [14000 International Rd, Cumberland, OH 43732](https://www.google.com/maps/place/14000+International+Rd,+Cumberland,+OH+43732/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x8837dae07a595557:0xa1ceca93325a8bd1?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111). Please try to be there by 12:30 p.m. For most Wilds' tours, a shuttle bus will take you to the actual spot of the tour. So think of this as though you're going to the airport to catch a flight. It helps to be on time. The Wilds generally asks that people arrive at least thirty minutes because the scheduled start time of their tour. **GPS / Getting to The Wilds** The Wilds is in a very rural area, but I've never had a problem getting there with my GPS (I have Verizon). I've also uploaded a JPG map, below, of Muskingum County. Sometimes, though, it's hard to get a signal when you're at The Wilds and getting ready to leave. So you might want to consider downloading an offline map in Google Maps. Your cell phone should pick up a signal, however, within a few minutes after you leave. The Wilds' Visitor Center does have free Wi-Fi. **Carpooling?** If you want to carpool, I recommend discussing this in the comments, below, to this event. While I don't myself carpool, I will do what I can to help you arrange something if I can. **The weather** Dress for the weather. Just because the barn is heated doesn't mean it will be warm. And wear closed-toed shoes. Wilds' tours typically run no matter what the weather is. **After the tour** Once we're done with the rhinos, we'll head over to the very highly rated [Y-Bridge Brewing Company](https://ybridgebrewing.com/). The brewery is about thirty minutes from The Wilds, and it will be on the way back to Columbus for most, if not all, of us. The brewery's actual address is [1417 Linden Ave Ste D, Zanesville, OH 43701](https://www.google.com/maps/place/1417+Linden+Ave+d,+Zanesville,+OH+43701/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x8837edd6cc50824f:0xe3a0af1ccb2aefbf?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111). Y-Bridge Brewing does not serve food; however, they have several [food options](https://ybridgebrewing.com/food-options). I encourage you to check these out ahead of time on their website for yourself. However, here are a few of them: *Within walking distance -- 120 feet away* * [Angry Bull Saloon](https://www.facebook.com/AngryBullSaloonZanesville/) (pizza & subs) * The Corner Pub Sports Bar and Grill (classic bar food) *Delivery options -- [Door Dash](https://www.doordash.com/)* * [4 Star Pizza](https://fourstarpizza.com/), (740) 452-9300 * [Donatos](https://www.donatos.com/), (740) 452-7900 * [Pizza Cottage](https://www.pizza-cottage.com/), (740) 455-6000 * [Dominos](https://www.dominos.com/), (740) 455-3126 * [Papa John's](https://www.papajohns.com/), (740) 450-4100 If you live in the area or can't make The Wilds but still want to meet us at the brewery, that's fine too.

Join **Daclaud** at **The Arcane Foundry** for an evening that introduces newcomers and enthusiasts alike to the timeless craft of **tabletop wargaming** and **miniature painting**. My own journey began with a fascination for fantasy — knights in armor, grim and hardened warriors, and monstrous creatures locked in epic battle. That passion led me to **Dungeons & Dragons**, where I painted my first **Basic Heroes set** and felt the spark that comes from bringing a character to life in miniature form. Not long after, I discovered **Warhammer Fantasy** and **Warhammer 40,000**, and I was hooked. The vision of vast armies clashing across the table — each unit meticulously painted, each story unfolding through dice and imagination — became my creative obsession. During this event, we’ll explore the **origins of wargaming**, from its early military simulations to the richly detailed worlds of modern tabletop battle systems. You’ll learn how to **build and customize your own armies**, paint your first figures, and experience the joy of turning strategy and storytelling into a hands-on art form. Whether you’re drawn by the lore, the hobby, or the thrill of commanding miniature legions, this introduction will open the gates to a world that has captivated hobbyists for generations. **🎨 RSVP today and join us at The Arcane Foundry — where every brushstroke and battle tells a story.**

Sunday Board Games at Land-Grant Brewing
Sunday Board Games at Land-Grant Brewing
We'll play board games at the [Land-Grant Brewing Company](https://landgrantbrewing.com/). The brewery has multiple [food trucks](https://landgrantbrewing.com/food/) on Sundays, including [Ray Ray's Hog Pit](https://rayrayshogpit.com/franklinton), [Buck City Sammies](https://www.buckcitysammies.com/menu), and [Hai Poké](https://www.haipokefoodtruck.com/). The brewery also has (passable) drip coffee, free water, and Jeni's ice cream. You can also walk over to the [Land Grant Extension](https://callinyourbluffcoffee.com/) for "real" coffee. (You may have to stand in line, though. The Extension is popular.) You can come late or leave early. Please just sign up so I know to expect you. **Notes on Parking** * You'll (probably) have to park on the street, but street parking is free on Sundays. * There are [parking garages](https://landgrantbrewing.com/parking/) a little farther away if you want. These are obviously not free, though. * There is a [lot next door](https://www.google.com/maps/place/39%C2%B057'26.0%22N+83%C2%B000'40.9%22W/@39.957211,-83.0119921,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m12!1m7!3m6!1s0x88388f3efd89238b:0xc139207386232411!2sLand-Grant+Brewing+Company!8m2!3d39.9577613!4d-83.011426!16s%2Fg%2F1pzt7t9df!3m3!8m2!3d39.957211!4d-83.011347?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDEyMS4wIKXMDSoKLDEwMDc5MjA3MUgBUAM%3D) to the brewery that you're allowed to park in, but it is not free. I've never parked there, so I don't know anything about rates. (I'm told though that if you eat at Milo's Deli next door to this lot that Milo's will stamp your parking so it's free.) * You're going to see odd signs on [Lucas St](https://www.google.com/maps/place/39%C2%B057'26.1%22N+83%C2%B000'40.3%22W/@39.957256,-83.0124134,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m10!1m5!3m4!2zMznCsDU3JzI4LjgiTiA4M8KwMDAnNDEuNSJX!8m2!3d39.957993!4d-83.011536!3m3!8m2!3d39.957256!4d-83.011197?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDEyMS4wIKXMDSoKLDEwMDc5MjA3MUgBUAM%3D) (saying it's a "private street") that will lead you to believe you're not allowed to park there, but you actually are. * Columbus parking cops literally do not work on Sundays. This means that, even if you're driving a non-EV, you can park in the EV spots near the brewery. **Games** I do bring many games, but please bring some of your own as well.
