Hi everyone, In this session, we'll be covering the Black American classic, **Passing** by **Nella Larsen**. This book was published in 1929, during the height of the Harlem Renaissance, a period of development of Black American art and scholarship during the 1920's and 30's. We follow the story of Clare Kendry and Irene Redfield, two childhood friends in New York City, as they reunite in adulthood. While Irene grew to be a prominent member of the Black community of Harlem, Clare left it all behind and began to conceal her race from everyone around her, including her racist husband. Larsen draws on her own complex experiences to explore themes of race, class, eugenics, and sexuality. We will be covering the **entirety** of **Passing** in this session. We meet to learn and practice American Sign Language and to grow our familiarity with Deaf culture. Facilitated by hearing folks (with a connection to a professional interpreter) using Deaf-created content. People of all ASL skill levels are welcome! As we learn, we hope to connect more with the Deaf community in Central Ohio. Join us as you're able! Come regularly or just once - whatever you're looking for! Each meetup will explore different topics related to ASL/Deaf culture, and will feature time to practice conversation with one another. Just bring yourself and a willingness to learn!

June meetup at the Library. We’ll play games and have casual conversation in Japanese and in English. All levels of Japanese ability, from non-speaker to native, are welcome. After the meetup we will go out to eat at a local restaurant.
