London Seminar: Rob Carver: Heisenberg's Backtest
**Please note that this event will take place IN PERSON on Friday, 6 March, 2026 in London at 6pm London time (1pm New York time).**
**In collaboration with Imperial College [MathSoc](https://imperialmathsoc.com/)!**
**Full title:** Heisenberg's Backtest
**Speaker:** Rob Carver
**Abstract:** What is a backtest for? In fact, like electrons, backtests have two contradictory natures. Firstly, they tell how well a particular trading strategy would have done in the past. Secondly, they help you design a strategy that will perform well in the future. These are not the same thing. In this talk Rob discusses this problem and how to reconcile these two objectives.
**Venue:** Huxley Building, Imperial College London, 180 Queen's Gate, South Kensington, London SW7 2AZ
**Biography:** Robert Carver is an independent systematic futures trader and writer. He is a visiting lecturer at [Queen Mary, University of London](https://www.qmul.ac.uk/sef/staff/carverrob.html), and is research advisor to [Stylus Capital](https://stylus.digital/), a hedge fund trading digital assets. He is the author of four books: “[Systematic Trading](http://www.systematictrading.org/)", "[Smart Portfolios](https://www.systematicmoney.org/smart)", "[Leveraged Trading](https://www.systematicmoney.org/leveraged-trading)" and "[Advanced Futures Trading Strategies](https://www.systematicmoney.org/advanced-futures)".
[Until 2013](http://news.efinancialcareers.com/uk-en/151380/key-departures-at-man-groups-ahl-fund/) Robert worked for [AHL](http://www.ahl.com/), a large systematic hedge fund, and part of the [Man Group](http://www.man.com/). He was responsible for the creation of AHL's fundamental global macro strategy, and then managed the funds multi billion dollar fixed income portfolio. Prior to that Robert worked as a research manager for [CEPR](http://cepr.org/), an economics think tank, and traded exotic derivatives for [Barclays](http://www.barclays.com/) investment bank. He spent his early career in the Middle East.
Robert has a Bachelors degree in Economics from the [University of Manchester](http://www.manchester.ac.uk/), and a Masters degree, also in Economics, from [Birkbeck College](http://www.bbk.ac.uk/), University of London.

The Justice Trap: Law and the Disempowerment of Society
Hello Everyone,
For this meeting, we’ll be reading and discussing Peter Gelderloos’ essay **[“The Justice Trap: Law and the Disempowerment of Society.”](https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/peter-gelderloos-the-justice-trap-law-and-the-disempowerment-of-society)** It’s a provocative text that questions what happens when social movements rely on “justice” through legal frameworks and state institutions, and how the justice system can end up weakening collective power, autonomy, and even community bonds. The essay also explores alternatives: restorative approaches to conflict, decentralized ways of resolving harm, and what “social peace” might look like without policing and prisons.
Gelderloos argues that the “justice system” can harm movements even when it appears to be fair. He describes how repression can work without convictions: two people are arrested, and an entire community ends up “punished” through stress, time-drain, fundraising, legal admin, fear, and disruption — meaning the **process becomes the punishment**, even if the court later “absolves” them.
He also pushes us to separate *resolving harm* from *justice institutions*. He gives examples of restorative and community-based ways of arbitrating conflict without police, prisons, punishment, or a legal code. In these models, conflict is often **defined subjectively** by the people involved, based on shared cultural values that are **not codified** into law. Resolution is **decentralized** (not one official space, not one official outcome), and responsibility is **shared rather than specialized**. Instead of punishment, communities may use **social sanctions meant to discourage harmful behaviour** — from criticism and ridicule to withdrawing social ties, sometimes escalating to ostracism in serious cases. The underlying assumption is that most people want to remain part of the community and can be brought back into relationship through accountability and repair.
**Guiding questions for the discussion**
• Subjective conflict: if conflict is defined by individuals, how do we prevent constant conflict or bad-faith accusations — and how do we ensure real harms aren’t dismissed?
• Non-codified norms: what do we gain from not codifying values (flexibility, context)… and what do we risk (arbitrariness, bias, exclusion)?
• The spectrum of sanctions: which sanctions feel acceptable in your context, and which feel dangerous? Where is the line between “discouragement” and “punishment”?
• If we step away from the justice system, what practices or structures could communities use to address serious harm and protect people, without reproducing prisons and policing under a different name?
Looking forward to seeing you all for what should be a stimulating and welcoming session.

Philosophy in the Park 134 (in The Barbican)
Philosophy in the Park is a philosophical discussion group. Open to all. No previous philosophical experience necessary.
We will meet in the Barbican Centre on Level Minus 1. Outside The Hall.
Here's how it works:
* At the start of each hour vote on which questions to discuss. You can vote for more than one question if you'd like. The questions with the most votes are the questions we discuss.
* We then break up into groups and each group does a different question. The question is just a starting point and it's cool if you go on tangents and up end talking about different things. You're welcome to join in and participate or if you'd prefer you're welcome to sit back and enjoy the conversation.
After an hour we all come back together, take a quick break and then repeat all over again. So in 3 hours we go around 3 times.
The aim is to have fun, meet new people, generate interesting and thought-provoking conversations, have your horizons expanded, challenge your preconceptions and who knows - you might even learn something?
In order to make the conversations as fun, interesting and productive for everyone as possible please follow these simple guidelines:
1. Keep it Philosophical
(No Science, no History, no Evolutionary Psychology, no contestable facts, personal anecdotes etc).
2. Think for Yourself
(No phones, no looking up definitions, no name dropping Philosophers / books you've read).
3. Tangents are Cool
(Don't worry too much if the subject drifts and you don't answer the question).
4. Keep it Succinct
(Like this).
5. Be Excellent to Each Other
(But of course).
Philosophy is about conceptual analysis. It's thinking about thinking. It's not about empiricism or the real world. It's about abstractions, concepts and ideas.
To terms of the right attitude: It's not about debating and trying to win - it's about listening to people and working collaboratively to increase our collective understanding.
No homework or prior knowledge or reading is necessary - simply come and enjoy the discussions.
After the event finishes we have an area reserved in The Shakespeare pub which is just around the corner from the Barbican. You are very welcome to join us if you'd like.
If you would like to submit a question please join the Whatsapp group. Question submissions take place on the Thursday before the meeting.
We hope to see you there.
Nice one.

Celebrate National Chip and Dip Day!
***Okay, call me crazy but you have got to try their chip n dip!*** Club 85 is a true hidden gem in German Village! Seriously, old school, good comfort food and drink. We will try to gather in spaces near the windows. While we'll share Chip n Dip, you'll want to order a sandwich, too.
**Where the Chip Began (1817)**
Potato chips can be traced back to an English chef, William Kitchiner, who includes ‘crisps’ in his bestselling cookbook, “The Cook’s Oracle.”
**Chip and Dip Popularity**
The popularity of chip and dip skyrockets at the end of World War II with new entertainment fads and the introduction of Lipton’s new advertising campaign for their famous French Onion Dip. (Club 185 doesn't openly admit it, but I'm pretty sure that's their dip recipe!)
**[Club 185](http://club185.com/)**—a true neighborhood bar serving since 1954, when it was known as a local 'speak-easy'. Located in German Village, Club 185 features a menu of quality casual comfort food and full bar. From politicians to lawyers, hardhats to hipsters—all find Club 185 the perfect place to tame their hunger and quench their thirst!
**PARKING**: I know, brick street parallel parking can be a pain. Two other choices, metered parking along Livingston heading towards Children's Hospital or across the street in the large church lot (park in spaces farthest away from the church entrance doors, closer to the street).
**PRE-EVENT**: **HAPPY HOUR (3-5pm)**: Italian drinks and bites at [Cento's happy hour](https://centogermanvillage.com/menus/), nearby.
