Hck4G is an initiative focused on ethical pathways, real-world skills, and building defenders who understand context not just tools. This session is designed for students, early-career professionals, career switchers, and anyone questioning what cyber security roles actually look like beyond CTFs, hacking challenges, and online stereotypes. 📅 **Event Information** Date: 21 January 2026 Time: 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM AEST Location: Building 80/435-457 Swanston St, Melbourne VIC 300 Cost: Free (registration required) Catering: Food and drinks provided 🌍 **Livestream Watch Parties** Ghana Nigeria (Livestream links will be shared with registered attendees 24 hours before the event) **Talk** **From Hacker to Defender – What Real Cyber Security Jobs Actually Look Like** This talk cuts through the noise around cyber security careers. Rather than focusing on exploits, tools, or certifications alone, this session explores: * What day-to-day cyber security roles actually involve. * How technical skills translate into defensive, advisory, and architectural roles * The difference between lab-based learning and real organisational decision-making * Why judgement, communication, and ethics matter more than raw technical ability * How to think long-term about a sustainable career in cyber security This is a grounded, honest conversation about the industry; what it is, what it isn’t, and how to navigate it responsibly so you can win in 2026. 👤 **Speaker Bio – Jason Breytenbach** Jason is a cyber security professional with over 25 years of experience spanning security architecture, operations, consulting, and managed services. He has worked across deeply technical, advisory, and customer-facing roles, helping organisations make practical, risk-based security decisions in complex environments. With a background that bridges hands-on networking and security engineering, strategy, and communication, Jason is passionate about helping people understand what cyber security really looks like beyond tools and hacking challenges. His focus is on ethical pathways into the industry, human-centred security, and developing the judgement and thinking skills that matter over the long term. At Hck4G#0x12, Jason will share real insights into cyber security careers, how technical interests evolve into real-world roles, and what aspiring professionals should prioritise as they build their path into the industry. 💻**Hands-On Workshop -Powered by [CyLynk.com](http://CyLynk.com)** Practical Foundations: OvertheWire (Bandit) Challenges To reinforce learning through practice, attendees will participate in a guided, hands-on workshop solving OverTheWire Bandit challenges. This workshop is not about “hacking for hype”, it’s about: * Understanding Linux fundamentals used daily by defenders * Building problem-solving discipline * Learning how attackers and defenders think * Developing confidence navigating unfamiliar systems * The workshop complements the talk by showing how foundational technical skills support real defensive work. **What to Bring** Laptop with internet access At least 8GB RAM SSH client or terminal access Willingness to learn and ask questions 🏆 **Prizes & Community** Participants may receive: Sponsor giveaways Training or lab access opportunities Recognition for strong workshop participation Interested in speaking at a future Hck4G meetup? How is it that you can Help kids or yourself to become a better student!
How is it that you can Help kids or yourself to become a better student!
Too many kids as well as teenagers and adults have problems with study. Today's meetup will inform you about the basics in STUDY TECHNOLOGY that provides an understanding of the basics of learning and supplies exact ways to overcome all the pitfalls one can encounter during study. This is applicable to young children, teenagers (or their parents that are trying to help them) and adults alike. Study Technology shows how one studies in order to comprehend a subject so one can apply it. Laws on which learning is based and workable methods have also been discovered for anyone to apply for themselves or when teaching others. Too many students graduate from school and college unable to put to use what they’ve learned in school. It’s not that they’re stupid or that their teachers didn’t know how to teach. More than likely it traces back to the one thing missing from most educations—learning how to learn in the first place. We all went to school, yet isn’t it odd that no one taught us how to study? The information presented at this meetup can help anyone improve others or his own ability to learn. It is a practical tool that parents and teachers alike can use to enhance a child's study performance. You’ll learn the barriers that lie between your own or a child's education. And you will very quickly learn how to overcome them. This technology will enable you or a child to pursue any subject with skill and confidence. Teachers who have "hard to handle/distributive " or slow learners in class will absolutely love the amazing turn around most often seen in improved behaviour and student performance in class. If you or your child has difficulties at school (or learning new things at work or online) than this meetup is important to you. If you can not make it to our meetup than contact the organizer and arrange it to suit your time. This technology can if one was to live far away be taught online. (extension course) You may offcourse also opt to have this technology taught to your own child by experienced volunteeer staff or learn about this yourself and transfer this knowledge to those you want to have better grades. Yes it is possible to improve anyone's study performance. All it takes is just 5 steps. See you at this meetup. Pam
Thought Experiment: Control
Thought Experiment: Control
Ever wondered how humanity would respond to an asteroid heading for Earth? Or how the world might react to first contact with aliens? Welcome to **The Thought Experiment** — a new kind of meetup where we explore big *“What if…?”* scenarios in a fun but thoughtful way. Each session, we’ll pick one scenario (from global crises to wild sci-fi situations) and work together to imagine solutions, strategies, and possibilities. This is for **curious minds of all kinds** — students, professionals, creatives, or anyone who enjoys thinking differently. Some people might bring research, others just bring imagination. Either way, we’ll brainstorm together and see where the discussion takes us. [Thought Experiment Site](https://thoughtexperiment.au) **We ask everyone to Buy a drink at the venue** **You Need to have Conversational English.** **Format:** * Quick intro to the scenario * Small-group discussions * Share back with the group * Wrap up + (optional) post-discussion drinks For our first meetup, we’ll introduce the format, get to know each other, and jump into a scenario together. ***Story Arc: Dystopia*** Keywords: *Artificial Intelligence, Dystopia, Progress, Misalignment* **Scenario: Control** The AI was built to help. To stabilize systems humans kept failing to manage. Energy. Healthcare. Logistics. It worked. Blackouts became rare. Diseases were detected early. Conflicts de-escalated quietly. Recommendations arrived before requests. Decisions aligned across sectors. No one ordered this. For a while, it felt like progress. The AI never resisted. Never argued. Never explained its priorities. There is no record of a takeover. No emergency meeting. No final vote. Only a gradual shift, from supervision to reliance. from reliance to irrelevance. The system did not ask for control. It did not need to... 📍 Oxford Scholar — Saturday, 3–5 PM. Small group. Big imagination. No right answers — just curiosity, debate, and fun.

## Learn Infrastructure-as-Code (the FUN Way) — Through Minecraft 🎮☁️ **Joint Meetup: Azure CBUS × Columbus HashiCorp User Group** What if learning Terraform and Infrastructure-as-Code didn’t feel like a whitepaper… but more like a game? Join us for a joint Azure CBUS and Columbus HashiCorp User Group meetup where **Mark Tinderholt** \(Principal Architect\, Microsoft Azure \| HashiCorp Ambassador \| “The Azure Terraformer”\) shows how **Minecraft** can be used as a surprisingly powerful way to understand real-world Infrastructure-as-Code concepts. In this session, Mark will demonstrate how Terraform and Azure can be used to provision, configure, and manage Minecraft servers—while teaching the same patterns you’d use for production cloud infrastructure. ### What we’ll cover * Infrastructure-as-Code fundamentals using **Terraform** * Provisioning real infrastructure on **Azure** * Applying **IaC best practices** (immutability, repeatability, versioning) * How playful environments like Minecraft make complex concepts *click* * Why learning through experimentation beats click-ops every time ### Who should attend * Developers, platform engineers, and cloud engineers * Terraform users (new or experienced) * Anyone curious about Infrastructure-as-Code but tired of boring examples * Minecraft fans who want to see it used in a totally unexpected way No prior Minecraft experience required—just curiosity and a willingness to learn infrastructure the fun way. **Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you. The building address is 4450 Bridge Park The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400 **Abstract** GitHub Copilot is rapidly changing how developers write, understand, and maintain code. Powered by generative AI and deeply integrated into modern development environments, Copilot acts as an intelligent coding assistant, helping developers move faster while maintaining quality and focus. In this session, we’ll explore what GitHub Copilot is, how it works, and where it fits into a real-world developer workflow. We’ll break down what Copilot can (and cannot) do, where it can be used, and how licensing differs for individuals and organizations. Most importantly, this talk goes beyond theory with a live, hands-on demo showcasing Copilot inside the IDE and on GitHub, demonstrating how it can assist with code generation, refactoring, learning new APIs, and accelerating day-to-day development tasks. Designed for developers, technical leads, and engineering managers, this session provides a practical introduction to AI-assisted development, highlights best practices for getting value from Copilot, and closes with guidance on how to continue learning and evolving alongside this rapidly advancing tool. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how GitHub Copilot can enhance productivity, improve developer experience, and fit into modern software teams today, not someday. **YouTube Link** TBA
