***"Where does the mind stop and the rest of the world begin?"*** *Does our mind stop at the skull, like the brain? Or does it extend outward into notebooks, post-its, gadgets, and perhaps even other people?* In this session of **Marginal Thoughts**, we will explore how far our minds extend. Before the - hopefully mind-expanding - discussion, we will engage with the “Extended Mind Thesis” through a short interview with one of its proponents and a short story that exemplifies the idea: * [Video interview with Andy Clark](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc-TdMjuJRU), one of the proponents of the "Extended Mind" (\~13 min) * Short story by Jonathan Nolan: ["Memento Mori"](http://people.whitman.edu/~herbrawt/classes/110/Nolan.pdf) (\~25 min; alternatively available as an [audio version read by author](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqq2aSegXXI)) Here Clark suggests that destroying someone’s notes might amount to more than mere property damage, whereas Nolan’s protagonist uses notes precisely to commit more than mere property damage. **How to prepare** Watching the short interview and reading the story would be the minimal preparation. As you engage with the material, try to identify at least one point of curiosity, confusion, or uncertainty - these will be natural starting points for our discussion. **What to expect** This is an in-person, conversational meetup in English. Splitting is encouraged, and I'll bring some bowls we can use to easily split/share ice cream, so everyone can try each stop without having a eat an entire scoop. After the last stop, we'll go hang in the park. There will be no teaching, no authority — only open dialogue and attentive listening. Everyone is welcome, whether you are familiar with Jiddu Krishnamurti or simply curious about life and self-understanding. We’ll start with an open conversation around a theme such as “Listening without judgment” or “Can thought bring clarity?” Please bring openness, curiosity, and a readiness to listen — no books or notes needed. Even when you think you've moved on, the negative emotions can be triggered, sending you back into the pain of that experience. And we are talking about pain; emotions such as grief, depression, anxiety, fear (or terror), boiling anger, simmering resentment, feelings of shame, blaming and regret can leave you incapacitated to a greater or lesser degree. In this local event we will be discussing the reasons why these past bad experiences have the power to affect you long after they occurred. We'll go over why the emotional pain can be so strong. We'll also discuss some simple solutions to overcome your emotional pain and be free to fully enjoy your life again. Free In-person Meeting: Unwanted Emotions & Loneliness, How to Get Over Them
This is an in-person meeting. Did you know that unwanted emotions like loneliness, sadness, hopelessness, anger, fear, anxiety, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not chemical imbalance in your brain due to some nebulous chemical reactions by chance. Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you. The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life. For instance, let's say you are already carrying a huge load on your back, then you cannot take on much more, but, let's say something else happens to you, such as the difficulties from the Pandemic, then the resultant combined weight on you can take you over the edge, kind of like the straw that break the camel's back. When this happens, people's attention usually goes to the straw that was added, but actually the majority of the weight had come from the huge load that were already there, holding a person down and causing a person issues. So how do you remove the huge load that was already there? How do you lighten them up? Is it possible to get rid of them? That is what this meeting will be all about. We’ll begin with a short grounding moment, followed by a brief reading from spiritual or philosophical traditions, and an open reflection circle where participants can share (or simply listen). Libera Animae is an interfaith community focused on inner growth, creativity, and authentic connection. All backgrounds are welcome.
