After the first Opium War, Shanghai was opened up to the world. British came to Shanghai first and set up the British settlement. American and French came afterwards to set up American settlement and French Concession. After the Small Sword society uprising, Shanghai was divided to three zones which were managed by different rules. France expanded the concession through constructing“extra-settlement roads” outside the concession. The commercial activities were flourished in International Settlement while on the other hand, French Concession developed to an ideal residential area for the upper class. There were quite a lot of villas and apartments in the area. The French Concession came to an end in 1943 when the Vichy French government signed it over to the puppet government in Nanking. Russian community flourished gradually and there were over 20,000 Russians lived this area which is also used to be called “little St. Petersburg” in 1930s. The white Russians opened shops, stores, restaurants, cafes and also some taught music and dancing which contributed a lot to the growth and development of French Concession. Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Symphony Museum are all located in the area.
