Khobar English Book Club — Meetup #1
📚 Khobar English Book Club — Meetup #1
Every week at Khobar English Book Club, our members meet to discuss a piece of literature that we are all reading - the description for this week's meet up is below.
📖 Current Read: *Metamorphosis*, Franz Kafka
This week, we’ll be discussing Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka’s haunting and endlessly thought-provoking novella. The story begins with one of the most famous openings in literature: Gregor Samsa wakes one morning to discover that he has transformed into a gigantic insect. What follows is a strange, unsettling, and surprisingly human exploration of identity, family, duty, isolation, and what it means to be valued by those around us. Both darkly humorous and deeply moving, Metamorphosis has captivated readers for over a century and continues to spark debate, interpretation, and reflection. Whether you read it as a psychological study, a social critique, or an existential masterpiece, there will be plenty to discuss.
🗓 Meetup Details
**Date**: Saturday, 20 June at 10:30am
**Reading Goal**: Before the meetup, please read the novella in full (~70 pages.)
**Location**: SA'AH Cafe
🔍 Where to Find the Book
The novella is widely available online as a PDF and can also be ordered online in physical format. You may also find copies at Jarir Bookstore.
💬 What to Expect
This is not a super structured event, but generally we’ll chat about:
• the book — parts of the story/ideas/characters/writing that we found interesting, meaningful, funny, thought-provoking etc. Also, aspects of the book that maybe we didn't like!
• books, literature, reading in general.
If you feel inclined, you can bring:
• specific passages you liked
• questions or discussion prompts
• suggestions for the next book
🤝 A Quick Note on RSVPs
These events are **free and informal**, but **spots are limited**.
In the spirit of community and courtesy, if you’ve clicked ‘Going’ but can’t make it anymore, please switch to ‘Not Going’ so someone else can take your spot.

**Abstract**
*Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code*
Visual Studio Code is one of the most widely used development environments today, and much of its flexibility comes from its extension ecosystem. Extensions allow developers to customize the editor with new features, integrations, and workflow improvements tailored to their needs.
In this session, we’ll cover what extensions are and the different types available, including full extensions written in TypeScript or JavaScript, along with lighter-weight extensions such as color themes, language packs, language support, code snippets, and keymaps. We’ll also look at practical reasons a developer might create an extension, from automating repetitive tasks to adding custom tooling.
The session includes a hands-on walkthrough of creating a new extension, testing it locally, and understanding the basic project structure. We’ll close with a brief overview of how extensions are packaged and published to the Visual Studio Marketplace and other distribution options.
