Nordic Comedy/Nordic Language Practice
Nordic Comedy/Nordic Language Practice
Join the Nordic Culture and Language Exchange Meetup Group at For Five Coffee Roasters Café, 901 K Street NW, Washington D.C. on Saturday, 25 April from 3-5pm. We’ll talk about some of the unique types of comedy found in Nordic culture, including folk humor/joke books, traveling musical comedy artists, the former Scandinavian Vaudeville circuit in America, and current Nordic comedians like Ismo from Finland, Pernille Haaland from Norway, Ari Eldjárn from Iceland, Casper Christensen from Denmark, and Petra Mede from Sweden. Then we’ll have conversation practice, where you are welcome to perform your own “tight five” (slang for 5 min comedy set) in Finnish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Swedish or Danish. Or you can simply read some jokes or discuss funny stories in your preferred Nordic language! After the Meetup event, we will attend an Icelandic comedy show (in English) at the nearby Eaton DC hotel. If interested in registering for free tickets to this Taste of Iceland DC event, please go to: https://www.inspiredbyiceland.com

Next Piano Meeting
Next Piano Meeting
Hello piano players: Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2026 at my house, 5612 Cromwell Drive, Bethesda, MD 20816. We will start at 2:00 pm. Also, reach out to a friend and work up a duet – they are fun and always welcome. In the past we have had duets with two pianos, with singers, and with the clarinet, and they bring a nice variety of music to our meetings. We will have snacks, finger food, light drinks, beer and wine, but your donations of food and drink are always welcome. Parking is on the street near my house. I hope to see you on April 26th. All the best, Paul Connor
Film: Reading the World
Film: Reading the World
“Education does not change the world. Education changes people. People change the world.” (Paulo Freire) Featuring newly unearthed archival footage of Brazil in the 1960s, this fascinating excursion into the early work of Paulo Freire shows how he implemented the ideas of democratic, non-hierarchical education that made him the internationally revered education philosopher he became. “Learn to read in 40 hours” was not a slogan but a promise Freire and his teaching corps made to illiterate farmworkers in the Brazilian countryside, and that they made to themselves. Simply put, instead of rote memorization, educators used familiar surroundings and objects to construct meaningful vocabulary. Moving interviews with some of the hundreds whose lives were forever changed by learning to read, sign their name, and thus vote personalize the link between education and democracy. Both were upended by the 1964 military coup that exiled Freire for 16 years and gave him to the rest of the world.—Judy Bloch Ticket Info/Price: Single Admission: $15 ($10 for ages under 25). Director’s Pass: $110 (10 tickets)

Bluegrass Repertoire Class with Justin Heath
This is a great class for beginner to intermediate players looking to get into bluegrass. Students will learn the basic chords and melody of one or 2 classic Bluegrass songs and how to approach playing them in a jam setting. Over the course of about an hour the class will play the tunes several times as a group exploring different possibilities for kickoffs, solos, endings and more. At the end of the class we open up the jam! Justin plays guitar and banjo with Cherry Blossom Special and runs jam sessions along and runs jam sessions along with mandolinist Nick Cameron and fiddler Mari Carlson. He has been teaching guitar, banjo and mandolin in Takoma Park since 2012. This class was designed to give people an affordable entry point to Bluegrass music, and help grow the community. Contra dance with Big Scioty May 2 - Clinton Heights Lutheran church
Contra dance with Big Scioty May 2 - Clinton Heights Lutheran church
**Caller: Richard Ades** **Band: The McKenzies** **Clinton Heights Lutheran Church** **15 Clinton Heights Ave, Columbus, OH 43202** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/) Please bring your own refillable water bottle.

How to Be a Better Communicator - A Free Seminar
Communication is everything in life. You are only as successful as your ability to communicate! \- What if you could confidently talk to anyone? \- What if you had the ability to calmly control every conversation? \- What if you could close that sale\, ask for that date\, make new friends\, repair problematic relationships\, get that raise\, or effortlessly express any idea with confidence? You can! The secret to success relies on your ability or inability to effectively communicate. Attend a free seminar and gain a better ability to communicate. 1266 Dublin Road, Columbus, OH 43215 Hosted by the Church of Scientology of Central Ohio For more information, contact Rhiannon, the Event Host at 614-221-5024

Sunday funday: let's play dodgeball at Scioto Audubon park
Dodgeball is back again! If you’ve been wanting to come out, this is an easy one to join. We’ll be playing for about 1.5 to 2 hours, you do not need to bring any equipment, and no experience is needed. We use a specific set of rules and equipment to make the games run better and keep them fun for everybody, not just people who already know how to play. If it rains, the event will be canceled.
