INTRO TO MODERN UPHOLSTERY â WEEKEND
**Bookable via our website â¡ïž** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-modern-upholstery-weekend-38/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-modern-upholstery-weekend-38/)
**âââ**
Spend a weekend making a fabulous footstool to take home and cherish.
We have created a wonderful project to learn the classic form of deep buttoned upholstery â but made with a time-saving modern method using sheet foam.
Banish those fuddy duddy club chair ideas and say hello to upholstery with a new twist; bright colours, shiny fabrics and funky feet.
One of the modules that professional upholsterers are examined on is the process of deep buttoning. The correct height of foam is selected and applied to a base. Holes are made in the base and foam. We have a traditional button press you will use to make your own buttons in whatever fabric you choose, in the same fabric as your footstool or bring 10cm of a contrasting colour. The top fabric is then folded and pleated and the button is knotted to hold the folds together. It is fitted with âCabrioleâ legs to complete the project.
You will learn enough know how to take away a skill to make your own headboard, banquette (I love that word) or anything else you can imagine. Itâs easier than it looks and comes together in such a satisfying way.
The dimensions for our footstool are 540mm x 360mm and we have allowed enough time and materials to make 9 deep buttoned holes. This size is about the smallest unit possible to learn the process of deep buttoning as an upholstery technique.
We provide everything for the workshop, from the wood frame to the set of natural beech wood legs that are included for you to paint or stain as you wish. We will give you guidance if you want to know different techniques for the wood.

B is for Blitz: the Club that shaped the 80s @ Design Museum
*"We lived for the subculture and we were the subculture."* â Boy George.
**Join us at the Design Museum for a major exhibition on the legendary Blitz club night that transformed 1980s London style, and generated a creative scene that had an enormous impact on popular culture in the decade that followed â from fashion and music, to film, art and design.**
Behind a door in a Covent Garden side street, the Blitz club was the place where 1980s style began. Inspired by everything from David Bowie, the punk and soul scenes, to continental cinema and cabaret culture, the brightest young talents of their generation came together to revolutionise fashion, music and design, turning a niche club night into a launchpad for global superstardom.
The scene launched the careers of many stars, including chart-topping performers Spandau Ballet, Visage, Boy George and Marilyn as well as a long list of designers, artists, filmmakers and writers â from couture milliner Stephen Jones and Game of Thrones costume designer Michele Clapton, to DJ and fashion writer Princess Julia and BBC broadcaster Robert Elms.
Forty years after its closure, visitors can revisit the trailblazing club's history and atmosphere with a sensory extravaganza of music, flamboyant fashions, and pioneering art, film, and graphic design.
Developed in close collaboration with some of the leading âBlitz Kidsâ who were there, the exhibition features over 250 items, ranging from clothing and accessories, design sketches, musical instruments, flyers, magazines, furniture, artworks, photography, vinyl records and rare film footage.

Humanist Community Celebrating Darwin Day
Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program:
Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there!
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
