TPL Salon Author Talk & CBC Ideas: History's Fiction, Fiction's Truth
(This EVENT is now FULL--currently NO tickets left) ***Toronto Public Library presents acclaimed novelist Esi Edugyan and celebrated historian Tiya Miles in a conversation that challenges the boundaries between fiction and history.*** ***In conversation with CBC Ideas host Nahlah Ayed.*** **FREE Eventbrite ticket** link is below--you need this entry ticket! \*\*National Book Award winner, **Tiya Miles**, brings the tools of fiction, vivid characterization, emotional resonance, and narrative suspense, to her groundbreaking histories of enslaved women and Indigenous communities. \*\***Esi Edugyan**, a two-time Giller Prize winner and Booker Prize finalist, grounds her historical novels in exhaustive archival research, excavating the lives of Black figures navigating 19th-century Europe and America with a historian's rigor and a novelist's grace. **Together, they'll explore the practical and ethical questions at the heart of their work:** How do you responsibly imagine the inner lives of people who left few records? When does historical accuracy serve the story, and when does it constrain it? What can historians learn from novelists about making readers care, and what can novelists learn from historians about accountability to the past? **Edugyan and Miles will discuss how we recover, reckon with, and retell the stories that shaped us, with host Nahlah Ayed.** FREE ticket link here: https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?Entt=RDMEVT580729&R=EVT580729

Rotman School: FEMINIST CITY 6.0: What Makes a Caring City? (Panel talk)
(Please reserve your own FREE entry ticket--at the link I've included below) ### Event Synopsis: Why care matters more than ever. ### **Agenda:** 4:30 pm - Doors Open 5:00 pm - Panel discussion begins 6:15 pm - Event ends *Join the School of Cities and the Institute for Gender and the Economy (GATE) for **Feminist City 6.0: What Makes a Caring City?** Together, we’ll explore how cities can be redesigned to foster caring, inclusive communities where everyone can thrive.* We've attended previous editions of this ongoing conversation: 2.0 & 4.0. **Care is the foundation of our societies**. From childcare to health care to elder care, everyone depends on care for themselves and their loved ones. The need for equitable access to care services continues to grow as populations age, women’s participation in the labour market increases, and challenges like the climate crisis threaten health and safety. At the same time, shifting work patterns and back-to-office mandates are changing how people navigate care responsibilities, commutes, and community life. High-quality care services not only support the well-being of care recipients but also open economic and social opportunities for caregivers. Caring communities are essential for building just, resilient, and flourishing cities—now and in the future. ***How can cities meet the demand for equitable, accessible care? How can we prepare urban systems to support care in a rapidly changing global economy?*** Answering these questions is critical for businesses, policymakers, civic organizations, developers, planners, and engaged citizens—because we all benefit from cities that are vibrant, inclusive, and built to care. **Ticket link** and more info on panelists HERE: https://www.rotman.utoronto.ca/news-events-and-ideas/public-events/events-listings/2026/january-2026/jan-12-feminist-city-60/ See you there/inside!

**A new format: you choose who you're interested in meeting** This meetup is about getting to know new people and sharing the experience in a small group (3-6 people). *We use the LYTT platform to handle group size and balance - so you're not just hoping someone interesting shows up.* To apply you will need to create an account at [lytt.me](https://lytt.me/meetup/jazz-night-rex) \- it's free\. **The event: Bebop & Standards at Toronto's Jazz Institution** The Rex has been Toronto's jazz institution since 1951. Thursday nights bring bebop and standards from some of the city's best players. Two 45-minute sets with a break in between - perfect for catching up with your crew, debating whether that bass solo was genius or showing off, and ordering another round. This isn't background music. This is sit-down, listen-up jazz from people who've dedicated their lives to it. The whole experience runs about 3 hours. **The group: LYTT platform** LYTT forms small groups for events and activities you pick. 1\. Click 'Attend' here on Meetup\, then head to [lytt.me](https://lytt.me/meetup/jazz-night-rex) to create a quick profile (photo, a few interests, short bio) 2\. Open Jam Night
Open Jam Night
The **Toronto Guitar Meetup** is proud to announce our **Monthly Open Jam Night** **for musicians of every instrument including all ages and levels of players - guitar, bass, drums, vocals, keyboards etc.** Moving forward we now have **2 open stages**. **One for intermediate players and one for late intermediate and more advanced musicians**. Each stage will have a minimum of 2 instructors facilitating the jam. Also we will have limits now for each type of instrument so please R.V.S.P. in advance to avoid disappointment. **ABOUT THE TORONTO GUITAR MEETUP'S JAM NIGHTS** Due to our location, right in the heart of the biggest music scene in the country, as well as our access to top of the line equipment for performance and recording, the Toronto Guitar Meetup is uniquely positioned to offer incredible jamming opportunities for the Toronto music community. In addition our sponsor the [Toronto Guitar School](https://www.torontoguitarschool.com/) been running a highly popular Rock Band and Ensemble program for over 10 years. The program continues to evolve and grow and those interested joining a band that rehearses on a weekly basis can click [here](https://www.torontoguitarschool.com/rockbands/) and email the school for more information. If you are new to our Open Jam Nights please arrive early (10-15 mins prior / 7:45 PM) so we can assess your skill level and musical interests in order to place you with musicians of similar skill level and stylistic preference. A brief audition for those new to the open stage will ensure that you are matched with like-minded and amicable band members so that no time is wasted playing in a group that is either too basic or advanced for you. The jam is very well organized and runs a total of 2 hours in multiple rooms that are perfectly outfitted with everything you will need to rehearse and make great music together. **OPEN JAM SCHEDULE** 7:45 PM – Orientation and Auditions for those new to our open stage. For those who have already attended our Open Jams or participated in our Band program wait downstairs and immediately proceed to our band rehearsal rooms at 8 PM and start jamming with others. 8:00 PM - Open Jam Begins 10:00 PM – Open Jam Ends **INSTRUCTOR INVOLVEMENT** The bands that are formed in our open jam nights are intended to function in a self-directed fashion with people sharing the chair for certain instruments (i.e. guitar and bass) so that everyone gets a chance to play. For ease of convenience we have binders with music charts for each specific instrument (e.g. piano, guitar, bass, drums, voice, saxophone, trumpet, ukulele etc.) to make it easier to play the tunes together. We are constantly updating and improving our song lists so if there is a piece you think should be added to our rehearsal binder please let us know and we will do our best to add it in time for the next session. While music instructors will be present at the jam, they are not there to direct the Open Jam, assign songs, or any other heavy handed roles. Instructors are present at the event in case that a musician or band should want advice or assistance and to make sure things run smoothly without technical glitches or any other major issues. **WHAT IT COSTS** If you are already a student of Mint Music or The Toronto Guitar School the discounted rate for the Open Jam is $10. For anyone else the rate is $15. This amount is paid upfront before you enter any of our rehearsal rooms. You will find that we have many people participating in our jam nights so please bring exact change to speed up the payment process. All fees go towards helping cover the cost of the rooms, upkeep of equipment, and instructor fees for the evening. **WHO CAN PLAY?** Our Open Jam is accessible to all ages. Our band program is primarily geared to adults but if you are a teen we do have a teen band so please contact the school office in advance so we can be sure to connect you to other teens your age at the jam. **PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES** The Toronto Guitar School is proud to organize three live band showcases each year open to our students. A full PA, backline, and sound engineer are provided by the school, again at no extra cost to participants. Our last major showcase was held at the Jazz Bistro in Toronto. Many of our bands pursue their own performance opportunities outside of the school’s involvement as well. **RECORDING OPPORTUNITIES** The Toronto Guitar School features a top of the line recording studio that bands can use to record demos, and bands have also used our facilities to record professional music videos.
Open Call Auditions for Rock Bands and Jam Nights
Open Call Auditions for Rock Bands and Jam Nights
The Toronto Guitar School is holding open auditions for musicians of every instrument for our one of a kind band program and jam nights. While guitar players are always welcome, we are especially looking for bassists, drummers, vocalists, keyboardists, brass and wind instrument players to fill out our amazing bands. All ages and levels of players from intermediate to advanced are encouraged to attend. **ABOUT THE TORONTO GUITAR SCHOOL'S BAND PROGRAM** Due to our location which is right in the heart of the biggest music scene in the country, as well as our access to top of the line equipment for performance and recording, the Toronto Guitar School is uniquely positioned to offer a band program unlike anything else offered at other music schools. It all begins with our audition process. Applicants will demonstrate their proficiency level at an in person (or online via Zoom) audition and they will also fill out a detailed questionnaire so that our staff can learn more about their musical background and goals. From there, applicants are carefully grouped together into bands using a process that we have refined over the course of twenty years of experience in running this program to ensure that the participants are matched with like minded and amicable band members. From there, bands will meet up on a weekly basis at our facility which is perfectly outfitted with everything you will need to rehearse and make great music together. **AUDITION SCHEDULE** 6:30 PM – Orientation and Auditions 7:00 PM – Play with Different Bands and Socialize with Other Participants 7:30 PM – Band Program Discussed and Questions Answered **INSTRUCTOR INVOLVEMENT** The bands that are formed by our program are intended to function in a self directed fashion. While there will be instructors present at rehearsals, they are not there to direct rehearsals or to assign songs or anything heavy handed. Instructors are present in the event that a band should want advice or assistance and to make sure that things run smoothly without any technical glitches or major issues. **WHAT IT COSTS** The audition process for our band program is free, however once participants are placed in a band, weekly rehearsals range in cost from $25 to $35 per rehearsal depending on the size of the group, the number of instructors involved, and the length of the rehearsal. **WHO CAN AUDITION** Our band program is available for all ages. We have bands for adults as well as bands for teens, and we have bands across a wide range of genres including rock, R&B, funk, jazz and metal bands. **PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES** The Toronto Guitar School is proud to organize three live band showcases each year at no extra cost to its participants. A full PA, backline and sound engineer are provided by the school, again at no extra cost to participants. Our last major showcase was held at the Jazz Bistro in Toronto. Additionally, some of our bands pursue their own performance opportunities outside of the school’s involvement. **RECORDING OPPORTUNITIES** The Toronto Guitar School has a top of the line recording studio that bands have used in the past to record demos, and some bands have even used our facilities to record professional music videos.

Contra dance Jan 24 (First Unitarian Universalist Church) note new time!
# **Band: The Pegheads; Caller: Liz Burkhart** Beginner lesson at 1:30, regular dancing begins at 2:00 pm NOTE THAT WE ARE TEMPORARILY DANCING IN THE AFTERNOON INSTEAD OF EVENING. Dance with us in the afternoon then you can still go out in the evening! **Sponsor: All Soles Contra and Square Dancing, First Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd., Columbus OH 43214** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 1:30 - 2:00, followed by dancing 2:00 - 430. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. Please bring your own refillable water bottle.
