Mamma Mia, Eritrea! | Weekend in Asmara + Massawa, Eritrea
**Historically intriguing, culturally compelling, and scenically magical,** Eritrea stands as one of the most fascinating countries in Africa, often regarded as one of the **most enigmatic destinations on the continent**. The country offers a unique blend of natural beauty, diverse heritage, and spirit of resilience. With its varied landscapes ranging from majestic highlands to serene coastal areas, Eritrea is an array of experiences for explorers seeking authenticity and wonder. Despite facing certain challenges in its development, Eritrea's potential shines through in its welcoming communities and breathtaking vistas, inviting travelers to discover its hidden gems and create lasting memories.
Eritrea boasts a rich history that spans millennia, with evidence of **human settlement dating back to around 6000 BC**. The name Eritrea originates from the Greek word erythraios, meaning red, in reference to the Red Sea that borders the country.
A notable historical landmark is the Masjid as Sahaba, or Mosque of the Companions, located in Massawa, which **dates to the** **early 7th century and is believed by some to be the first mosque built in Africa**, constructed by companions of the Prophet Muhammad who sought refuge in the region. During the late 19th century, Eritrea came under Italian colonial rule starting in 1885, serving as a strategic base for Italy's ambitions in Africa. Following Italy's defeat in World War II, the territory was administered by Britain until 1952, when it was federated with Ethiopia under a United Nations resolution. Tensions arose, leading to a prolonged struggle for self determination that culminated in Eritrea achieving independence in 1993 after a referendum, marking the birth of the modern nation and its ongoing journey toward progress and stability.
For a relatively small country, Eritrea impresses with incredible scenery that is perfect for road trips, from the **plateaus and soaring peaks of the Abyssinian Highlands** to the Filfil Rainforest and the deserted white sand beaches of the Red Sea coast. Culturally, it is a melting pot, home to an array of ethnic groups, and boasting a delicious cuisine familiar to fans of Ethiopian food.
A walk through the old town of Massawa is like stepping back in time, its streets lined with gently crumbling Ottoman buildings and home to the oldest mosque in Africa. The highlight is Asmara, Eritreas scenic capital full of striking and **whimsical Art Deco architecture**.
Clip [https://vimeo.com/211172658](https://vimeo.com/211172658)
**Let’s go!**
**DAY 1 :: Friday //** **Arrival in the Capital**
Meeting at Terminal 2 at 17:00 for a flight at 19:25. Arrival at Asmara International Airport and immigration clearance, then we will check into our hotel in the city and get some rest.
**DAY 2 :: Saturday // Journey to the Coast**
After breakfast we travel towards Massawa, descending from the highlands to sea level as we drive through Eritreas famed Green Belt, across 3 climate zones. A small pocket of greenery is the Filfil Rainforest, the most northerly rainforest in all of Africa, home to deciduous trees as well as olive and cedar trees. If the government regulations allow, we will stop by hot springs famous for their healing properties for ailments such as rheumatism. Continuing the journey, we will pass through desert plains before reaching the port city of Massawa.
**Massawas old town features a blend of Turkish and Italian architecture**, a reminder of the countrys Ottoman and Italian colonial history. We will stroll the run down but peaceful streets and take a look at the old Turkish Palace and the more modern port built by the Italians at the turn of the 20th century. Another highlight is a structure that has been standing for more than 800 years: Masjid as Sahaba (Mosque of the Companions), dating to the 7th century and believed to be the first mosque built in Africa.
Later we will head to Gurgusum Beach, a beautiful stretch of sand on the Red Sea, to enjoy an afternoon of sunbathing and swimming.
Overnight in Massawa.
**DAY 3 :: Sunday // Return to the Highlands + Asmara**
An early start to make the drive back to Asmara. This time we are gradually ascending back into the highlands, passing through a number of villages and experiencing three climates in just over two hours drive.
On the way we will visit a part of the Eritrean Railway built by the Italians between 1887 and 1932, which includes a notable four arched bridge along its route. We will take a quick look at the four arched bridge and water storage tanks, constructed during the Italian colonial era to supply water for the steam locomotives that operated on the line.
Located at an altitude of 2400 masl, Asmara is the capital of Eritrea and a place of significant history and heritage. A unique feature attracts photographers and architecture enthusiasts from around the world: an African Italian crossover resulting in one of the **worlds greatest collections of early 20th century experimental architecture**.
Under Italian rule, there was an overhaul of the built environment of Asmara in the 1930s, with architects given free rein to realize their most experimental designs. The quiet colonial town was transformed into Africas most modern metropolis, the **Little Rome at the center of Italys planned African empire.**
Today, Asmara is still home to more than **400 Art Deco, Futurist and Modernist buildings**, and has been officially recognized as a **UNESCO World Heritage site**. We will explore the streets and visit the most intriguing examples throughout the city, ranging from cathedrals and gas stations to cinemas.
Later, we will venture to another unique landmark of Asmara: **a tank graveyard**, where piles of mangled and decommissioned tanks, trucks, buses and more have been piled high and left to the elements. It is a place ideal for photographs!
In the evening, return to the airport for a flight back home.
**Level of difficulty:** easy, available for everyone
**Activities:** sightseeing and getting amazed with Afro-European Art Deco.
**Accommodation & meals:** 4 star in Asmara, 3 star in Mussawa - double sharing, restaurant meals excluded.
**Cost: AED 3,950** excluding flights until JAN 24.
**Specifically excluded:**
* Visa - to be obtained in consulate prior to travel. We can support you throughout the process but you ll **need to visit Consulate in Dubai.**

Secrets of Hormuz Strait | Qeshm Archipelago, Iran (without visa - any passport)
Curious to know what life was like in the Gulf, pre-oil? Well, wonder no longer. Over one long weekend, this trekkup will introduce you to fascinating Qeshm, both a tranquil haven for nature and wildlife and a time warp transporting visitors to a bygone era.
**The largest island in the Arabian Gulf**, Qeshm is a world apart. Over an area six times the size of Bahrain, we’ll find teeming mangrove forests, dramatic landscapes and secluded beaches with playful dolphins just offshore.
Venture inland to get lost in **an extraordinary network of canyons, caves and valleys** carved over millennia, and now protected within what is the Middle East’s only UNESCO-recognized geopark, thanks to its unique geology and biodiversity. Explore the glittering depths of Namakdan Salt Cave, which at 6 km is one of the world’s longest, or get starry-eyed in the Valley of the Stars, where the otherworldliness of the wind-sculpted rock formations gave rise to the legend that they were caused by the impact of meteors falling from the heavens.
Qeshm is dotted with some **60 traditional Bandari villages**, where, unlike much of the Gulf, the islanders have held fast to their age-old way of life. You won’t find any gleaming skyscrapers here! Locals wear traditional dress, live in wind-tower-cooled houses and still craft by hand their **UNESCO-listed *lenj* boats**, which have kept trade moving across these waters for centuries. We will spot many of Qeshm’s women wearing the colorful *burqa* masks that are unique to southern Iran – a practical blend of cultural identity and sun protection.
The island’s wildlife is just as remarkable: endangered hawksbill turtles roam the shallows, rare birds and reptiles thrive and mangrove forests shelter everything from flamingos to crabs. Community-led conservation projects have gained international recognition, with **tens of thousands of turtle eggs laid on Qeshm’s beaches each year.**
The icing on the cake? Though part of Iran, **Qeshm is a visa-free, duty-free zone (yes, even for UK and US passport holders!)** so all you’ll get is an unreadable entry stamp and access to bargain shopping.
**It’s the perfect weekend escape for anyone curious about Iran’s diversity.** Qeshm isn’t representative of the whole country; it’s distinctly “Gulfy”, nature-focused and refreshingly unhurried. But that’s the charm. Here, time has stood still, offering a glimpse of the region as it was before the oil boom – no time machine required.
**Let’s go!**
**DAY 1 // Friday**
Meeting at T2 for a short flight from Dubai. Immigration formalities and transfer to marina for a boat ride to Mangrove forest. Visit to traditional dhow shipyard followed by Geoparks of Chookah and Statue Valley. Towards sunset, perhaps the most remarkable one - Valley of the Fallen Stars, for some unforgettable views.
Zaar or local dance ceremony followed by dinner.
**DAY 2 // Saturday**
Early morning start, as we get ready to tackle **one of the biggest salt caves in the world**. Stretching over six kilometers into the heart of a mountain, Namakdan Salt Cave houses a dreamlike landscape of glistening white salt crystals, colorful mineral patterns and surreal formations. Make sure to breathe in deep! Rich in salt particles, the cave’s air is said to have therapeutic benefits for respiratory health.
Next we hop on a boat to Hengam Island, for some relaxing beach time and a local safari that will introduce us to more of Qeshm’s flora and fauna. In the afternoon, it’s back to the main island and time for some cultural immersion, as we visit the Bandari people in Laft, a 2000-year-old fishing village and the oldest settlement in Qeshm, famous for its traditional architecture and historical windcatchers.
Dinner and overnight in local guesthouse.
**DAY 3 // Sunday**
Breakfast, drop off to airport for return flight home. Bye bye, Qeshm!
**Level of difficulty:** easy, available for beginners.
**Activities:** short trekking, boating, caving, sightseeing, swimming and snorkeling (optional)
**Duration:** Weekend
**Accommodation & meals:** local meals & stay in local guesthouse, shared rooms.
**Cost: AED 3,500 AED** all incl. flights, cash payment only until JAN 07.
**Visa:** Qeshm is visa free zone, no visas required. Immigration pre-registration formalities included in trip budget. All nationalities receive entry stamp on arrival.
**Requirement:** small backpack, sports shoes, sunglasses, sunblock, scarf for ladies, mosquito repellent, swim and snorkeling gears.

Atlantis of the Sands feat HIGHEST DUNE IN THE WORLD | Empty Quarter of Oman
Named after your ex-girlfriend heart, the Empty Quarter (Rub’ Al Khali) of Oman is known for its harsh desert climate filled with endless sand dunes as far as the eye can see.
The Empty Quarter, which encompasses most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, and Yemen, has ancient remains only recently **discovered by archaeologists in 1992 using remote sensing equipment.**
The city of Ubar, once a trade port along the fabled frankincense route through ancient Arabia, dates to 2,800 BC. And based on excavations and satellite imagery it is also believed to be the Iram of the Pillars, **mention in the Quran** as a wicked and many-towered city eventually swallowed up by a massive sandstorm – a place sought out by adventurers and explorers for over a century!
**Ramlet Jedelah** \- Some 12 kilometers from the Yemen\-Oman border is a home to **the highest dune in the world**. The summit has been measured at 455m, surpassing the previous record holder - BIG DADDY. You may know BIG DADDY from our trekkup to Namibia, standing on 418m.
And on this weekend, we will take a deep dive into this mysterious area, not far from Salalah, trekking the dry canyons, exploring lost Bedouin cities, and discovering ancient archaeological sites. And as the sun sets on the vast dunes of Arabia, we will get settle into our desert camp for Salalah-style delicacies, served by a campfire.

**Lets go!**
**Day 1: DEPARTURE**
Meeting at airport at 4pm for direct flight to Salalah, immigration formalities. Check-in to beach resort. Relax or explore surroundings.

After an early breakfast, the expedition begins! Board our 4×4s and set out toward the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali), the world’s largest sand desert, known for its endless dunes and ancient legends of lost cities.
The route passes abandoned settlements and camel farms, offering a glimpse into the traditional desert life. Soon the dunes appear on horizon, and we start exploring their golden waves and vast panoramas.
Continue drive to **Ramlet Jedelah - highest dune in the world** with elevation 455m, even higher than Namibia's own Big Daddy. After short climb and several hundred selfies, we’ll visit a nearby geode plateau, where hollow stones sparkle with crystals.
As the sun sets, we drive across dunes to our campsite. BBQ dinner under a sky full of stars. Overnight in tents.
**DAY 3: LOST CITY OF UBAR - WESTERN DHOFAR**
Today we headfirst to the **Lost City of Ubar, a UNESCO-listed** archaeological site steeped in mystery and legend. Often called the “Atlantis of the Sands,” Ubar was once a thriving trade hub before it vanished beneath the desert.
Although it’s time to head back to Salalah, **brace yourself for another set of stunning views!** We will visit Rakhyut pools, Shaat view point, Mughsayl blowholes, where seawater shoots high through natural limestone vents.
In the evening, we set compass to the airport for our flight home, with pockets full of memories of Oman’s desert magic.

Practical Philosophy Meetup - Dubai 🇦🇪
**🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌
**📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CdjwVxcf2EO6vcLWUhaIdk?mode=ems_copy_c), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 17:00-17:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the official start.
* 17:15-17:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 17:25-18:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.
* 18:45-19:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.
* 19:00 - The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other.
**🧧PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend! We just ask that if we are meeting in a café, buy a beverage! Some chapters rent a space for us to meet, and they may ask for donations to help contribute to the cost of rent. Donations will always be 100% voluntary though!
**💛 WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
**🗣** “I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” - Ekam
🗣 “I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” - Daniel
**🤓 FAQ**
* **What will we talk about? What's the topic?**
The topic for the week is shared every Sunday in the Whatsapp group. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you don’t see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CdjwVxcf2EO6vcLWUhaIdk?mode=ems_copy_c).
* **Do I need to study or read anything to attend?**
No preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it, but it's not required.
* **Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?**
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* **Is it mostly men that attend?**
Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms.
* **Can I come alone?**
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* **Can I be late?**
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* **Where do you meet?**
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CdjwVxcf2EO6vcLWUhaIdk?mode=ems_copy_c) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/).

Practical Philosophy hosts weekly, in-person meetups in over 20 countries, including Canada, Spain, Japan, Mexico and many more! 🗺️
