Stories From the Dubliners
Stories From the Dubliners
Come and join us for this exciting production specially for Bloomsday Week. **COST: 19 euros Tickets from the theatre.** *Back by popular demand, Volta’s critically-acclaimed Counterparts & A Little Cloud has been expanded to include adaptations of three stories from Joyce’s debut work -- Two Gallants, A Little Cloud, and Counterparts -- as part of the Bloomsday Festival.* These three short stories are vivid "slices of life" from early 20th century Dublin. Stunningly accompanied by live music, they portray a society in paralysis in immaculately detailed scenes: in *Two Gallants*, a couple of ne’er-do-wells mooch around Dublin on the make. *A Little Cloud* sees a sensitive soul thrown by a meeting with an old college friend back from London, while *Counterparts* takes us on a doomed pub crawl with an ungainly, bad-tempered law clerk. At once funny and tragic, Joyce’s tales are populated with an array of colourful characters who remain entirely contemporary, despite the bowler hats and Edwardian collars. *[‘Exquisite… heart-rendingly perfect’](https://www.independent.ie/entertainment/theatre-arts/bewleys-cafe-theatre-double-bill-lights-up-the-genius-of-joyces-dubliners/a1916520100.html)* \- Emer O'Kelly\, **Sunday Independent** *[‘Superbly articulated performances…’](https://www.theartsreview.com/single-post/a-little-cloud-counterparts "'Superbly articulated performances...'")* - **Chris O'Rourke, The Arts Review** *[‘A perfect hour’s entertainment…’](https://www.independent.ie/entertainment/theatre-arts/stories-from-james-joyces-dubliners-still-shine-like-gems-more-than-a-century-on/a450257839.html "'A perfect hour's entertainment...'")* - **Katy Hayes, Irish Independent** **DETAILS:** **18:30: Meet in the Foyer of the theatre** **As it is usually free seating, we need to be** there early to get to the front of the queue. **19:00:** Play begins After the play we will go for a drink and chat.
Evening Swim Killiney
Evening Swim Killiney
We’ll meet at **7:00 PM** to start our swim. I’ve finally decided to get back into swimming at this famous spot this year! **Meeting point:** once you arrive at the White Hut, walk down the steps and you’ll find us on the **left-hand side**. Please note that the meeting point is **at the bottom of the steps on the left**, not at the top. If you’d like, feel free to bring something to drink or some biscuits so we can enjoy them together afterwards. The water is still not very warm, so please come prepared. Also, this is a **pebble beach**, so we strongly recommend wearing sandals, water shoes, or neoprene socks when entering the water. I will be limiting this event to **14 participants**. I know this may seem a little inconvenient, but there are many other events available within this group. We kindly ask everyone attending to behave respectfully towards the organiser. Please remember that organisers are volunteers, and it is your responsibility to check practical details such as how to reach the meeting point, public transport options, parking, and any other relevant information before attending. A respectful and considerate attitude towards the organiser is expected at all times. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Free lecture: Authenticity, identity and personhood
What does authenticity mean? What is 'authentic thinking'? What does it have to do with who we are and who we are becoming? Join us for a talk by Dr. Frances Hannon, PhD researcher in philosophy in Maynooth University as she investigates these questions through the lens of Edith Stein's philosophical anthropology. If you'd like to receive primer material on the talk and be informed about future events by email, you can also register here: https://forms.gle/QaGzqky6V7K6Ve6f6

Killiney and Flagstaff Hills walk
Killiney and Flagstaff Hills walk
This coming Sunday (21st June) we're having a walk to Killiney Hill via Flagstaff Hill (also known as Roche's Hill). **Meeting Location** Outside Killiney DART Station - There are two exits from the station onto Station Road. We'll meet at the exit which has a disabled parking space and bicycle stands. There's a train that's due to leave Dublin Connolly at 11:28 which should arrive in Killiney at 12:05. It starts in Malahide at 11:02 and stops at all stations so feel free to get on where you want. **\*\*\* Important, please click on Attend if you wish to join this event \*\*\*** From the meeting point we will walk to Flagstaff Hill with its excellent views over Dublin Bay and the nearest parts of the Dublin Mountains. From there it's a short walk to Killiney Hill with its famous obelisk and pyramid where even better views can be had on a clear day. We will then go past the old signal station and then down to Dalkey village. We'll finish up at Dalkey Station. If it's dry and warm enough, we'll probably have a picnic at some point along the walk so feel free to bring some food and drink. We will finish in Dalkey so we'll probably also visit a café or pub there. We hope to see you there! [Host(s)] Tim (085 718 5658) WhatsApp messages preferred. FAQs 1. Is there a charge for this event? No, this is a free event. Sometimes we have events that involve a visit to a museum or garden with an entrance fee - but this will be clearly marked in the details 2. Is it OK for people on a short visit to Ireland to join this walk? Yes both visitors and residents alike are welcome to join our walks. 3. How easy/difficult is this walk? Most walking groups would classify this as a medium walk, so having a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Some parts of the walk are quite steep with narrow, uneven paths and the total distance is around 7-8km. 4. Why are there only a limited number of places for this event? To ensure the best possible experience for the people attending it is necessary to limit the numbers, especially as the chosen route may not be straightforward. 5. Why is it necessary to book on this event if you wish to attend? This is because there are only a limited number of spaces (see point above) and to ensure the fairest allocation of spaces, we kindly request everyone to book a place. It's OK to change your mind about coming but please change your RSVP in plenty of time for someone else to take the place if they wish to. PLEASE NOTE: Walking like many outdoor activities carries an element of risk. People who take part in our meet up activities do so at their own risk and are responsible for their own actions and involvement. If you register to join our meet up walks you agree that you wish to take part in the activities knowing these risks. Please wear boots, shoes or runners that you find comfortable, provide suitable support and have good grip as some of the paths may be uneven or steep. In some places there is gorse next to the path, so trousers or leggings are recommended over shorts or skirts. If you have waterproof trousers then feel free to wear them for extra protection. It is also recommended to bring water to avoid dehydration. Bring warm clothes and a waterproof jacket or umbrella in case of inclement weather. The Completely Series
The Completely Series
These meetings will be a building block approach to learning photographic mastery over three disciplines: Mechanical Mastery (MM) - 13 weeks of the series Exposure Mastery (EM) - 26 weeks of the series Composition Mastery (CM) - A 52 week series All three series will run concurrently and will dovetail as follows: Q3/26 - MM (Iter 1), EM (Iter 1, Pt 1), CM (Iter 1, Pt1) Q4/26 - MM (Iter 2), EM (Iter 1, Pt 2), CM (Iter 1, Pt2) Q1/27 - MM (Iter 3), EM (Iter 2, Pt 1), CM (Iter 1, Pt3) Q2/27 - MM (Iter 4), EM (Iter 2, Pt 2), CM (Iter 1, Pt4) That's likely confusing, but essentially, MM offered 4 times in that period, EM offered 2 times, and CM offered 1 time. **TO BE CLEAR - THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THESE CLASSES.** This is an aggressive series, with presentations, homework, group shoots to be added in, likely at LEAST twice a month, image critiques, and an expectation that you are willing to put in the work to elevate your photography significantly. Open to all levels and all equipment levels. Don't let hesitation about your skillset and/or gear keep you from a one-time opportunity. The group will meet every Monday, with periodic exceptions, and we will try to keep as close as possible to the original plan. Obviously, more data to come, and will be published as this is further developed, but now is the time to decide if you want to be a part of this.

Drunken Philosophy: Where Is Everybody? The Fermi Paradox and the Great Filter
Drunken Philosophy: Where Is Everybody? The Fermi Paradox and the Great Filter
Welcome to Drunken Philosophy, a casual, curious, social discussion club. Come grab a drink and a seat at The Oracle. **Optional topic for this meetup: Where is everybody?** In 1950 the physicist Enrico Fermi was talking about aliens over lunch and asked a question that still has not gone away: if the universe is so vast and so old, and even a fraction of those billions of stars have planets, where is everyone? By the numbers the galaxy should be crowded with civilizations. Instead we look up and hear silence. That gap between "they should be everywhere" and "we see no one" is the Fermi Paradox. One of the most unsettling answers is the idea of a **Great Filter**: somewhere on the road from dead chemistry to a galaxy-spanning civilization, there is at least one step that is almost impossible to get past. Maybe the filter is behind us. Maybe life starting at all, or simple cells becoming complex, or intelligence ever evolving, is the freak accident, and we already cleared the hard part. Or maybe the filter is ahead of us, and advanced civilizations reliably wipe themselves out before they spread. Here is the part that messes with people. If we ever found life somewhere else, even pond scum on Mars, most people would call it the greatest discovery in history. But it might be the worst possible news. It would mean life is common, the early steps are easy, and the hard step is still in front of us. So the eerie silence overhead might actually be the best sign we could ask for. **Questions to wrestle with:** * Is it better to be alone? Would you rather we find alien life and learn we are not special, or find nothing and quietly improve our odds of surviving? * Where do you bet the filter sits, behind us or ahead of us, and why? * If it is ahead of us, what is it? Nuclear war, climate collapse, AI, something we cannot even picture yet? And can we do anything about a filter we cannot see coming? * Two principles pull opposite ways here. The principle of mediocrity (the Copernican principle, Sagan's "no privileged place in the universe") says we are ordinary, so what happened on Earth probably happened everywhere, which makes the silence scream louder. The anthropic principle says of course we find ourselves somewhere life was possible, since we could not observe anything else, so our being here may say almost nothing about how common life is. Which lens do you trust, and does the silence still demand an answer once you account for observer selection? * And if we did confirm life out there and had to accept we are not special, what would that do to belief in a higher power, and would shedding (or keeping) that belief help or hurt our odds of pulling together as one species? * Does any of this change how you live, or how humanity should be spending its time and money right now? As always the prompt is optional. Come for the conversation, stay for the drinks, and bring your own questions.
