Open Coffee Riga is a friendly informal networking event for entrepreneurs, professionals, locals, guests, people in the startup community, and students in Riga. Open Coffee Riga is an “un-meeting” without a speaker or agenda. We are focused on attendees gaining value from other attendees. The rules, tools, structure and moderation aim to facilitate this goal. You may find a mentor, investor, client, co founder, employer, vendor, inspiration or a friend. What is the BIG idea behind Open Coffee? We want to help people create valuable & meaningful connections. Everyone is welcome to our meetings, and we especially love first-timers. We want to make sure that if somebody coming from an unsupportive background/country has the courage to join, they will notice that we are glad they came because we welcome them. If you feel shy, you can also just listen but we encourage you to talk. We start at 19:00 sharp. Everybody gets up to 2 minutes to present: 1. Who they are and what they are doing 2. What they want 3. How they can help others At 20:00 sharp we stop hosting and you can talk to people who are most interesting to you. We are focused on business and social entrepreneurs, community builders, game-changers, earth-shakers and anyone else who is doing something interesting or wants to get involved in other people's projects. You can talk about any project/topic. This event is based on the Open Coffee Krakow format, run by Richard Lucas and others in Krakow, Poland since 2012. The Open Coffee Riga is a revival of the Open Coffee Riga from 2011 (!) where it evolved into TechHub Riga & that evolved into StartupHouse Riga. **Meeting at 11:20 on Saturday at the Laima shop & Ticket Offices area of the central railway station. We are taking the 11:38 train to Skulte, and will get off at Vecaķi. Please arrange for your own ticket.** You might have seen recent photos of the frozen seaside and the famous Lady Kathleen / Lady Cotlin shipwreck near the Mangaļsala Pier. On this daytrip we will venture out to Vecaķi and walk by the seaside to the Mangaļsala Pier. **The path will most likely be frozen and slippery.** If possible and safe, we will get close to the shipwreck as well. **Approaching the shipwreck might be unsafe and it is your own responsibility.** The weather is expected to be cold and appropriate clothing and bringing hot drinks are advised. The walking distance is about 12 km from the Vecaķi train station to the Pier and then to the terminal of Bus 24. We will take Bus 24 to return to the centre. Everyone is welcome to join. It's hard to weave across all the shiny new options across the Fabric landscape, let alone figure out where it fits into your organization. Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program: Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there! Food and drinks will be provided at the event.
