Walk for Peace
**Come whit me, lets [Walk for Peace](https://www.facebook.com/walkforpeaceusa)**
(Please, read the full event details if joining the walk - This is NOT a lets go to see the Monks pass-by meetup, this is a Lets go and join the Monks on they'r final 15+ miles from VA to DC as a day hike)
The "Walk for Peace" is a 2,300-mile pilgrimage by 19 Buddhist monks from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., started in late 2025, to spread messages of peace, [loving-kindness](https://www.google.com/search?q=loving-kindness&sca_esv=88967a97f71d192c&hl=en&source=hp&ei=WQlnafi5LPWz5NoPwrO1KQ&iflsig=AFdpzrgAAAAAaWcXaY2YxerYQCnaYyPDxGnEnebiLN0K&ved=2ahUKEwiU0s29h4qSAxW4FlkFHX9sJ0UQgK4QegQIARAE&uact=5&oq=what+is+the+walk+for+pease+movement&gs_lp=Egdnd3Mtd2l6IiN3aGF0IGlzIHRoZSB3YWxrIGZvciBwZWFzZSBtb3ZlbWVudDIHECEYoAEYCjIHECEYoAEYCjIHECEYoAEYCjIHECEYoAEYCkj_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_ZIHBDQxLjOgB5iSArIHBDM2LjO4B_AUwgcGMy4zMy44yAdegAgA&sclient=gws-wiz), and [compassion](https://www.google.com/search?q=compassion&sca_esv=88967a97f71d192c&hl=en&source=hp&ei=WQlnafi5LPWz5NoPwrO1KQ&iflsig=AFdpzrgAAAAAaWcXaY2YxerYQCnaYyPDxGnEnebiLN0K&ved=2ahUKEwiU0s29h4qSAxW4FlkFHX9sJ0UQgK4QegQIARAF&uact=5&oq=what+is+the+walk+for+pease+movement&gs_lp=Egdnd3Mtd2l6IiN3aGF0IGlzIHRoZSB3YWxrIGZvciBwZWFzZSBtb3ZlbWVudDIHECEYoAEYCjIHECEYoAEYCjIHECEYoAEYCjIHECEYoAEYCkj_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_ZIHBDQxLjOgB5iSArIHBDM2LjO4B_AUwgcGMy4zMy44yAdegAgA&sclient=gws-wiz), documented online and supported by communities along their route, notable for their silent, mindful journey with a rescue dog named Aloka.

* **Community Interaction:** They tie blessing strings (a simple thread) on supporters' wrists as tangible reminders of peace, fostering a connection between the journey and the individuals.
* **Online Presence:** The group actively shares updates, photos, and live maps on social media (Facebook), garnering significant support and media attention.
In essence, it's a walking meditation and grassroots effort to promote a message of inner and outer peace through personal example and community connection across the United States.
**Proper & Respectful Practice TO BE FOLLOW when meeting the Monks:**
**1\. Choose simple\, clean flowers \-** Fresh flowers without strong fragrance are ideal. Simplicity reflects sincerity.
**2\. Place them low\, not high \-** Gently place the flowers on the ground, never at head level or above the monk.
**3\. Do not block the path \-** Set the flowers slightly to the side or just ahead of where the monk will step, allowing him to pass naturally without changing his stride.
**4\. Kneel or bow if appropriate \-** If culturally appropriate, kneel or bow briefly after placing the flowers. Keep movements calm and unhurried.
**5\. Maintain silence \-** Avoid speaking, calling attention, or making eye contact unless the monk initiates it.
**6\. Step back mindfully \-** After placing the flowers, step back to allow space. Let the offering speak for itself.
**7\. Offer with intention\, "not expectation" \-** The true offering is your mindfulness and gratitude, not recognition.

**Proper way to present your self to a Monk:**
To show respect in front of a Buddhist monk, it is generally recommended to **bow with your palms pressed together** (known as the *aรฑjali* gesture or *wai* in Thai culture), which is a common and appropriate form of greeting and reverence. Full prostration (the "kowtow") is typically reserved for sacred objects like a Buddha statue during specific ceremonies, not as a casual greeting.
Here are the appropriate steps and considerations for greeting a Buddhist monk:
The Basic Greeting (Aรฑjali/Wai)
1. **Bring your hands together, palm-to-palm, in front of your chest**. This gesture is called *aรฑjali* (or *wai* in Thailand) and can be used as a greeting, a thank-you, or when speaking with the monk.
2. **Raise your hands** to a level appropriate for the monk's status.
* For a typical monk, the hands are often raised to the level of the lowered forehead, with the index fingers or thumbs touching the forehead.
* The higher the hands and the lower the bow, the more respect shown.
3. **Accompany the gesture with a slight bow of your head or from the waist**, keeping your back and neck straight.
4. **Avoid physical contact** such as shaking hands, especially if you are a woman, as many monks follow a strict code of conduct regarding physical contact with people of the opposite sex.
\* Deeper Expression of Respect (Prostration/Kowtow)
A more profound sign of respect, often referred to as kowtow in a general sense, is the full **prostration** (known as *krab* in Thai culture). This is typically done during formal ceremonies in a temple or shrine room:
1. **Kneel** on the floor with your body composed. Men usually sit on their heels, while women may sit with their legs tucked to one side.
2. **Bow forward**, placing your palms on the floor about six inches apart, and touch your forehead to the floor between your hands.
3. **Repeat this three times** to show reverence to the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha).
4. Avoid pointing your feet toward the monk or a Buddha image while seated or prostrating, as this is considered highly disrespectful in many cultures.
**General Etiquette**
* **Address the monk respectfully:** Use titles such as "Bhante" (Pali for "Venerable Sir") or "Venerable". In some traditions, senior monks with over ten years of experience may be addressed as "Ajahn" (Thai for "teacher").
* **Dress modestly:** Ensure your shoulders, chest, and knees are covered when visiting a temple or meeting a monk.
* **Sit at a lower level:** If the monk is sitting, you should sit as well, avoiding sitting in a higher position than the monk.
* **Use both hands when offering something** and avoid passing items directly to a monk of the opposite gender; use a receiving cloth or place the item on a nearby surface instead.
* **Be mindful of your feet:** Never point the soles of your feet towards a monk or a Buddha image.

How To Sell Snake Oil (& Your Best Ideas) with Dr. Ed Tori ๐๐ข๏ธ
**๐ ๐ข๏ธ How To Sell Snake Oil (& Your Best Ideas)**
Persuasive Speech Patterns with Dr. Ed Tori
***โผ๏ธIn person at room 401-D at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G St NW, Washington, DC***
**How do you get your ideas to land?**
Have you ever heard phrases like โthereโs no buy-in,โ โtheyโre resistant,โ or โthis group will not move.โ But what if resistance is not the problem? What if the issue is the way we communicate?
In this lively, participatory workshop, **Dr. Ed Tori** will introduce you to a set of practical and surprisingly playful **persuasive speech patterns** drawn from his work in influence, hypnosis, storytelling, and behavior change. You will learn how people naturally shift into more persuasive communication when pressure is removed and creativity is sparked.
At the center of the experience is a hilarious improvisational game inspired by the card game Snake Oil. Participants take on imaginative roles like zombies, pirates, or kindergarteners. Others must invent and pitch made-up products on the spot. The role-play creates immediate psychological safety and unlocks natural persuasive instincts you may not realize you have. Ed uses these moments to teach simple, powerful patterns you can apply to real conversations.
**What you will explore**
* Why people communicate more confidently and creatively when the stakes feel low
* How persuasive speech patterns can transform conversations in facilitation, coaching, leadership, and team settings
* Why resistance is often a signal of mismatched framing rather than unwillingness
* How to speak to the human behind the role, label, or stereotype
* How playful practice builds shared language, humor, and camaraderie among intact teams
* How these patterns apply across contexts: healthcare, corporate environments, education, and family systems
**What you will experience**
* A fast-paced, interactive group exercise that helps you practice persuasive communication through play
* Step-by-step teaching of speech patterns you can start using immediately
* Opportunities to experiment, reflect, and compare approaches
* Practical tools you can adapt for your own clients, teams, or classrooms
**Who this is for**
* Anyone who works with groups and wants their ideas to be heard.
* Ideal for facilitators, coaches, consultants, organizational development practitioners, educators, designers, and leaders at any level. This session is especially helpful for people who work in environments where โresistance,โ โlack of buy-in,โ and โdifficult stakeholdersโ are common refrains.
**About the presenter**
* Dr. Ed Tori is a physician, educator, and expert in influence and communication whose work blends behavioral science, improvisation, and hypnotic language patterns. He teaches leaders, clinicians, and teams how to help others think, feel, and act differently through ethical persuasion and intentional communication. His sessions are energetic, funny, experiential, and unforgettable.

Philosophy of Friendship: What are the bases of "friendship"?
As you may or may not know--I didn't until late last year--Aristotle wrote extensively on "friendship" in the Nicomachean Ethics. After 69 years the concept of friendship still creates questions and uncertainty. I had close friends in high school and for a few years after high school but our interests diverged and people moved all over the country so it was hard to maintain connections.
* So if I/you haven't talked with a friend for several years, are you still friends? Are we friends who meet at Drunken Philosophy or Omnipresent Atheists?
* Can you be friends with someone with whom you have virulently divergent political views? Sartre and Camus could not.
* Aristotle regarded friendship as essential to a good life, not merely an added "bonus." Do you agree?
* In the Nicomachean Ethics (Books VIII and IX), he claims that wealth and power are meaningless without friends. Trump has wealth and power but seems to have no real friends, but wealth and power seem meaningful to him in perverted ways. Can you have meaning in your life without friends?
* Do men and women view and maintain friendships in different ways?
* Aristotle categorizes friendship into three types, based on what forms the bond:
* **Utility**: Based on mutual benefit, but this type is fragile and ends when the usefulness ceases.
* **Pleasure**: Based on shared enjoyment (e.g., humor, hobbies). Common among youth but fades as interests change.
* **Virtue (The "Complete" Friendship)**: Based on mutual respect for each other's character and goodness. You wish good for the other for their sake, not yours.
* **Key Principles of "True" (Virtuous) Friendship:**
* **Permanence**: Virtuous friendships last a lifetime whereas those based on utility and pleasure are fleeting.
* **Reciprocity**: Requires mutual goodwill; secret or unreciprocated affection does not qualify.
* **The "Second Self"**: A true friend is "another self"โtheir virtue helps you understand and improve yourself.
* **Time and Intimacy**: Deep ("complete") friendships are few, built on time and shared experiences.
* **Self-Love and Friendship:**
* Good friendship starts with being a friend to yourself.
* They distinguish shallow egoism (chasing honors) from real self-love (pursuing virtue).
* A virtuous personโs pleasant self-company allows them to be a stable, good friend to others.
* Aristotle argues that one's social circle ultimately reflects one's characterโa view with striking relevance today. Well--the Drunken Philosophy social circle certainly reflects good character!
Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
[The Board Walks](http://www.theboardwalks.com/) are for curious people who love deep conversations.
If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!).
**HOW IT WORKS**
**Step 1: Bring a topic**
Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event.
**Step 2: Circle up & share**
We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds.
**Step 3: Walk, talk & float**
We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!"
**Step 4: Feel more alive**
Two hours flies by. You're back where you started โ but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others. That's why regulars join 20+ times.
*For more details, read our [Orientation Guide.](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation)*
**HOW TO BRING A GREAT TOPIC**
A great topic = something you're genuinely curious about.
Recent topics include:
* "What are you passionate about right now?"
* "What makes a good friend?"
* "What's a belief you used to hold that you've completely changed?"
* "How do you want to be remembered?"
* "What would you do if money wasn't a factor?"
Think of your topic like the dish you're bringing to our conversational potluck. If everyone brings an A+ dish (i.e. energizing, uplifting, expansive), we'll all walk away feeling lighter and brighter.
**WHAT TO EXPECT**
This isn't a fitness event with casual chitchat. It's a walking think tank where we explore life's big questions together, beyond small talk. *If you're looking for light banter or a standard networking event, this probably isn't the right fit.*
But if you crave depth, genuine connection, and conversations that make you feel alive? You'll love it here.
**FAQ**
* Wear casual athletic attire and sneakers. It's a long walk!
* We have multiple first-timers at each event. We work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive, clique-free space.
* We welcome people of **all** ages, backgrounds, and industries who align with the [intention](https://www.theboardwalks.com/ground-rules) of this space.
* Rain or shine, we've been out here nearly every week since July 2022. If the event is cancelled, we'll let you know.
* Dogs, babies in strollers, parents, and friends are welcome โ please text/email them the event link so they can RSVP and prepare a topic!
**LOGISTICS**
* If you'll arrive over 10 minutes late, we suggest skipping the event. It's hard to find us once we start walking, and your host can't answer messages during the event.
* This walk is designed for everyone to *move together at the same steady pace* (about 20 min/mile). This format works best when the whole group moves in unison. If you have mobility limitations, we kindly encourage you to find an event better suited to your needs.
* Read our [Orientation Guide](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation) for full details.
* If you enjoy the event, send **[this](http://www.theboardwalks.com/)** to a friend or sign up for our **[newsletter](https://theboardwalks.beehiiv.com/)**. We're in multiple cities with more on the way. ๐ค ๐

**Photography 102: A Deeper Dive Into Photography**
**Are you ready to dig deeper into photography? Then this intermediate photography course is perfect for expanding your knowledge of photography!**
This intermediate photography class builds upon the foundational knowledge acquired in the Photography 101 class. It focuses on empowering students to move beyond automatic camera modes and take greater creative control over their images. This course uses an engaging and practical hands-on approach to reinforcing these newer and more advanced photographic concepts.
**Through hands-on exercises and insightful lessons, you will learn:**
* **Master More Advanced Camera Settings**
* **Aperture and F-stops:** Understanding how aperture controls depth of field and using it to create blurry backgrounds (shallow depth of field) for portraits or sharp focus throughout a landscape (deep depth of field).
* **Shutter Speed:** Learning to utilize shutter speed to freeze fast action or intentionally blur motion for artistic effects.
* **ISO:** Exploring ISO settings for optimal image quality in different lighting conditions, understanding the trade-off between sensitivity and potential image noise/grain.
* **Exposure Modes:** Beyond "Auto", understanding and utilizing manual (M), aperture-priority (A or Av), shutter-priority (S or Tv), and program (P) modes for specific shooting scenarios.
* **White Balance:** Learn how to effectively set white balance controls to represent colors in varying lighting conditions properly.
* **Metering and Exposure Compensation:** Understanding how the camera measures light and how to use exposure compensation to fine-tune exposure for desired results.
* **On-Camera Flash Basics:** Gaining a basic understanding of when and how to use the built-in flash or external flash units effectively.
* **Advanced Concepts and Techniques**
* **Composition Beyond the Basics:** Looking at some more advanced composition concepts and taking a deeper look at the Elements of Design, learning to use space more effectively, controlling the elements of the scene that are drawing attention, and mastering visual weight.
* **Lighting Beyond Natural Light:** Introduction to artificial lighting, such as off-camera flash, reflectors, and softboxes, to control and shape light for different effects.
* **Basic Image Editing:** An introduction to photo editing software like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, covering essential tools for adjusting brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness.
* **Developing a Personal Style:** Exploring ways to refine a unique artistic voice and create a consistent photographic style.
**This class provides the next step in the path to becoming a more proficient and artistic photographer, allowing for more advanced usage of the camera system.**
**Prerequisites:**
* A camera (film, DSLR, or mirrorless) that has manual controls is required. Hands-on exercises make having the camera in class highly beneficial. You will need at least one lens to evaluate the results of control exercises.
* You may attend this class in one of two ways:
1. With a class voucher provided by your retail camera store
2. Purchasing a seat in the class
