Voilà ce que m'ont révélé la mort d'Ivan Ilitch et le journal qu'il a laissé. Je veux donc décrire ma conception de la vie et de la mort avant cet événement, et je transcrirai son journal tel qu'il m'est parvenu." Ces lignes de Tolstoï définissent le propos qui lui a dicté ces trois nouvelles. La maladie d'un magistrat, la mort et la rédemption d'un négociant pris dans une tempête de neige, Trois morts, incarnent dans des personnages et des événements simples et poignants la même interrogation : ""Et la mort ? où est-elle ?" Il chercha son ancienne peur et ne la trouva plus. "Où était-elle ? Quelle mort ?""
