Homer composed “The Odyssey” roughly around 750–650 BCE (the exact date has been lost to the ages). The first English translation appeared in 1615 (by George Chapman). There have been over 60 English translations since George’s - and all but one by men. Emily Wilson, a professor of classics at the University of Pennsylvania, has studied Homer in depth, and found that existing translations glossed over some of the language and context expressed by Homer in order to appease masculine societal sensibilities. In her own translation, Emily refuses to sugarcoat Homer’s precise wording - and comes in like a phraseology wrecking ball! Join Stephen Fiyalko, President of the Melbourne Theosophical Society for meditation, self attunement, study and discussion on the Laws of the Universe. We welcome all to join at 5:30pm for a 30 min Meditation and will begin the discussion group at 6:00pm. For those who prefer to just attend the discussion group you're welcome to arrive at 6pm. The Alliance is part of the Greater Central Ohio Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. We are an all-voices chorus dedicated to providing an inclusive environment for all those who love to sing, regardless of their race, gender identity, sexual orientation or musical background.
