Backend to Production: Serverless Architecture with AWS
Tired of just learning theory? It's time to build like a professional.
Welcome to our first major technical workshop under the new **AWS Student Builder Group** identity! This is NOT a theoretical course or a vague introduction to the cloud. This is a complete immersion into a real-world enterprise workflow.
In this hands-on workshop, we will bridge the gap between local development and cloud production. You will learn how to design a clean backend API, understand modern serverless architecture, and deploy it live on AWS.
**đ„ What you will learn:**
* **Part 1: Backend Engineering:** Move from "just coding" to true software design. Learn REST API architecture, clean code practices, error handling, and tools like Git and Postman.
* **Part 2: AWS Cloud Fundamentals:** Understand why companies are moving to Serverless. We will break down key services: AWS Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB/RDS, and IAM security.
* **Part 3: The "Build" Phase:** Pure hands-on practice. Create your Lambda function, connect it to API Gateway, and deploy a serverless API that is accessible via a public URL.
* **Part 4: Production & Integration:** Adopt the professional mindset. Learn how to test your API in production, manage logs with CloudWatch, and understand basic security tokens.
**đŻ Expected Outcome:** You won't just leave with notes. Every participant will leave with a functional API deployed online, along with the professional tricks and standards used by modern cloud engineers.
**â ïž Prerequisites:**
1. Bring your laptop.
2. **CRITICAL:** You must create a free AWS account *before* attending the event to save time.
3. Basic knowledge of programming (any language) will be helpful. We will provide a starter project so no one gets left behind!
Let's build. Innovate. Solve. Impact. *We are solution providers!*

Battle of the personal agents
Join the Columbus AI community for a special event.
**Battle of the Personal Agents** is your chance to see what people are actually building with AI agents and personal automation systems. Whether youâre running OpenClaw, Hermes, or a completely custom solution, bring your agent and show the community how it works.
Weâre interested in real-world implementations: the problems your agent solves, how you use it day-to-day, how itâs hosted and managed, how you built it, and why youâve chosen to keep using it. Live demonstrations are encouraged, so be prepared to show your code, architecture, workflows, and your agent performing real tasks.
This is less about polished presentations and more about sharing practical experience, comparing approaches, and learning from one another. If youâd like to present, please contact Chris Slee (via meetup) before the event so we can allocate enough time for everyoneâs demonstrations.
Come ready to show what youâve built, discover what others are doing, and maybe find a few ideas worth taking home.
Whether youâre deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus.

Doors open at 6:00 PM.
Presentation/livestream starts at 6:30 PM
**Description:**
AI split AppSec into two attack surfaces: your code, and the code factory that produces itâcoding agents, the models and MCP tools they call, the developer environment itself. With exploits now landing in under ten hours and vulnerabilities shipping from more authors than ever, this talk lays out a staged path to a "Mythos-ready" programâreprioritizing around reachable risk, accelerating remediation, and securing the AI-SDLCâand argues security should stop filing tickets and start shipping fixes.
Smart Search + AI: An Outcome-Driven Journey from IDP to a Suite of AI
Over a billion documents processed. Millions of Veterans impacted. Hundreds of thousands of employee hours saved. Faster decisions. Greater accuracy. More benefits in the hands of our disabled Veterans.
We created Smart Search, the worldâs largest consumer of Amazon Textract, right when GenAI began reshaping whatâs possible. Since then, weâve built a suite of AIâdriven solutions that transform this data into real, measurable outcomesâaccelerating benefits decisions for our Nationâs Veterans.
Join us for a focused conversation on how an outcomeâdriven approach to AI is helping us boost accuracy, streamline workflows, and deliver faster results for those who have served.
This is a follow up to the AWS re:Invent 2023 "Intelligent Document Processing with Gen AI for Public Sector" presentation.

Columbus Book Club: The Secret History
**đ Books and Banter: The Secret History by Donna Tartt âą All Readers Welcome**
Come and join us to open up a conversation about this month's pick, The Secret History by Donna Tartt with people who just enjoy a good back-and-forth, and no two nights ever play out the same.
Reading ahead is great but not required, and bring whatever section you're itching to discuss, and bring your scribbled notes â because what you clocked is exactly what someone else sailed past.
Everything's fair game for debate â with the discussion built entirely from what people bring, and the energy tends to build as the evening goes on.
Every night is a fine first night â and the group is an easy one to slot into, all you need is yourself and an opinion, and the night usually ends with people wanting to keep going.
---
**What the session looks like:**
- Arrive, grab a seat, and say hi if you're new â no icebreakers, just talk
- Talk opens on a first question and flows on from there, no set agenda
- Near the end there's a chance to pitch the next read
**What helps:**
- Your copy of the book, paper or screen
- Bookmarks or sticky notes on your favourite bits
- Curiosity and patience for other readings
- Something warm to drink if the mood takes you
â *"Honestly the best hour of my month â the takes were nothing like mine, and that was the whole point"* â regular
đĄ **Before you come:** mark the passage you reckon the table will pounce on, since a single flagged scene beats a vague impression, and the group makes it easy from that first line on.
---
đŻïž Come for the book, stay for the discussion â join us and bring your read and the discussion takes it from there. The talk starts when you arrive. đŻïž
