Conscious Choice: Taking the Wheel from the Autopilot
Conscious Choice: Taking the Wheel from the Autopilot
*“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” — Adapted from Carl Jung* **What is a recurring pattern in your life that you’ve always chalked up to "just the way things are," but might actually be a choice you didn't know you were making?** We all like to believe we are the conscious authors of our own lives. We wake up, pursue our careers, nurture relationships, and make daily decisions with the conviction that we are fully in the driver's seat. For the most part, this belief keeps us moving forward, allowing us to build our lives with a sense of control and purpose. But sometimes, we notice strange echoes. We find ourselves repeating the same frustrating relationship dynamics, reacting with familiar anxieties, or following well-meaning expectations we've never paused to examine. We hit invisible walls and call it "bad luck," or we feel inexplicably stuck and chalk it up to "fate." Conscious Choice is the profound, sometimes unsettling process of looking under the hood. It is the act of checking our "blind spots"—the hidden impulses, unexamined fears, and borrowed beliefs that run our minds on autopilot—and asking: Am I actually making a free decision right now, or am I just following a default setting? Join us at this Curious Souls Cafe gathering to explore the brave, liberating work of turning off the autopilot. We will discuss how to untangle our authentic desires from our passed-down habits, the courage it takes to face our hidden drivers, and the profound freedom of finally taking the steering wheel. Bring your stories, a brave spirit, and an open mind. Let's explore what happens when we finally step out of the background noise and make a choice that is entirely our own. **Inviting those who...** 🪞 Are curious about the hidden drivers behind their daily routines and major life choices. 🧭 Feel like they are repeating certain life patterns and want to figure out how to break the cycle. 🗝️ Seek a brave, judgment-free space to discuss the deeper, sometimes messy layers of the human experience. 🫂 Want to understand the everyday expectations they absorbed, and decide what to keep and what to leave behind. 🤝 Hope to find "kindred spirits" who appreciate profound, authentic conversations over small talk. 📅 Agenda / What You'll Experience 💬 Prompted Conversations We will use virtual question cards designed to help people thoughtfully explore their experiences. Here are some sample questions: * We make thousands of choices a day. In your own life, what does it feel like to make a truly "conscious" choice versus a choice made purely on "autopilot"? * What is a small, everyday "rule" about how a life should be lived that you inherited, but recently decided to lovingly leave behind? * Making a conscious choice sometimes means stepping out of familiar patterns. How do you balance honoring your authentic self while still maintaining harmony with the people around you? From there, we’ll embark on a respectful, engaging, and meaningful conversation, celebrating the diversity of perspectives and ideas within the group. Note: This session may involve virtual question cards accessed via a link or QR code. If you do not have a device (phone/tablet) to access these, please ask a facilitator for assistance; we have spare units available. The exact format of the event may change depending on turnout according to [https://curioussouls.cafe/#how-to](https://curioussouls.cafe/#how-to) and other factors. 💬 Final Thoughts and Feedback Where time allows, in the final 10 minutes of the event, we’ll take a moment to reflect on the key insights, memorable moments, and takeaways from our discussions. This is a chance to distill the shared wisdom and leave with a deeper understanding of the topics we’ve explored together. After the event officially concludes, the group may choose to extend the session, depending on the group’s interest. Of course, you’re welcome to leave at any time that feels right for you. An anonymized summary will be shared for sessions where key insights are identified. After the meeting, our facilitators and participants may reflect on the discussion and contribute to a summary or collaborative workbook based on their notes and observations. Additionally, questions may be revisited in future sessions in an anonymized manner. To explore what our events are like, check out our official website at [https://curioussouls.cafe](https://curioussouls.cafe) 📍 Location City: Hong Kong Address: Empire Centre, 68 Mody Road, Tsim Sha Tsui East Inside the shopping mall of Empire Centre, there is a large open area dedicated to a café. Informal Filmmakers Meetup & Drinks
Informal Filmmakers Meetup & Drinks
We're back! We currently meet at Forever Lounge in Causeway Bay (near Tin Hau MTR station) roughly once a month. The emphasis of our gatherings is always on the creative, artistic, and collaborative aspects of filmmaking. Typically, we begin with informal introductions, where you will have the opportunity to talk about yourself and your background, experiences and/or goals. Your host Ben will then introduce a new topic (this month's presentation is on screenplay format and story structure), during which questions and comments are always encouraged. We will then wrap up by discussing any projects we are working on or would like to get started. All are welcome, and no experience is necessary. Questions and opinions are always encouraged. If you have any materials (scripts, showreels, raw/edited footage, etc.) that you would like to share, please feel free to bring it along, but all you will need is enthusiasm and confidence! Forever Lounge is near Tin Hau MTR station (exit A1), at 176-178 Causeway Road, Causeway Bay 銅鑼灣銅鑼灣道176-178號地舖 [Forever Lounge - Western Wine Bar in Causeway Bay Hong Kong | OpenRice Hong Kong](https://www.openrice.com/en/hongkong/r-forever-lounge-causeway-bay-western-wine-r18523)

July 4th One Shot Saturday (Tabletop RPGs)
July 4th One Shot Saturday (Tabletop RPGs)
WHAT IS ONE-SHOT SATURDAY? It's a weekly meet-up in Sheung Wan/Central, focusing on indie games and single-session games (one-shots). 而家所有游戏係英文嘅但如果你要嚟玩中文游戏,我哋會無任歡迎。只要湊啱玩家就行! You can drop in and play at any One-Shot Saturday – you do not need to have played in a previous session or commit to playing again. Whether you've played an RPG before or not, you're welcome to join us. Please arrive on time as once the games begin it becomes difficult to properly introduce latecomers. Join the conversation, make plans, suggest games to play, etc. — Facebook group: [https://www.facebook.com/groups/oneshotsaturdays/](https://www.facebook.com/groups/oneshotsaturdays/) \*\*\* WHAT IS A TABLETOP RPG? It's a game in which you never know where the next stop will be, because it’s all down to the decisions you and your fellow players make. Usually one person is the Game Master (or "GM"). Everyone else will be players, taking the role of the characters in the game. The players get to say what their characters say, think, and do. The GM describes everything else in the world. Then... we play to find out what happens. The game is a conversation: I say something, then you reply, maybe someone else chimes in. We talk about what's happening to the characters we imagine and the world around them. We also talk about the rules, which help us decide what happens next if the next step is in doubt. The rules differ from game to game: some use dice to shape the story, others use cards or something else. It's always a conversation, though.

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for July is "Shoes" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!

Columbus Comedy Improv Meetup at Gresso's!
Columbus Comedy Improv Meetup at Gresso's!
Whether you've never done improv before, or you've done it for so long you were quoted in *Truth in Comedy*, or anywhere in between, come join us! Swing by *Gresso's* for the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup**! The idea behind improvised comedy is to create entire scenes from scratch. A suggestion is taken from the audience and laughter is built on the spot. This can be done in game form, like *Whose Line Is It Anyway, Make Some Noise,* or *Wild 'n Out*; it can also be done in a longer way, to tell a complicated story, like *TJ & Dave*. Our meetup, which is central Ohio's longest running (and FREE!) weekly comedy event, brings the games for you to play in a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment. Afterward, many members will hang out in *Gresso's* itself and get to know each other. Not only is this a lot of fun, but you get to work on thinking faster on your feet, your public speaking, plus it's an excellent way to meet new people and build relationships that will last a lifetime, and you do that while laughing your butt off! Ask yourself if you want to join the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup**, and say "*Yes, And*" that you'll have a blast!
COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above. There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change. The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/). Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers. For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.
Shut Up & Write!™ Easton Town Center
Shut Up & Write!™ Easton Town Center
We'll meet at The Capital One Café, 167 Easton Town Center, Space A-103. This is in the main mall where the Microsoft store used to be, on your left if you're standing at the bottom of the AMC Theater escalator. Join us on Saturday for an hour of uninterrupted wordmaking! • What we'll do Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 10AM on Saturday mornings. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: 10:00 - SESSION 1: quick intros. 10:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 11:10 - chat / take off / keep writing. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 11A-11:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer. Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you! • What to bring Whatever you need to be able to write! Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block noise or the occasional conversation by other patrons. Electrical outlets are limited, so charge your devices before whenever possible. See you at The Café on Saturday!

Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Greetings writers! Come down and join your fellow wordsmiths for one hour of uninterrupted writing time in the upper level of the Market District Supermarket in Upper Arlington. The main entrance of the shopping center opens onto stairs/elevator leading up to the 2nd floor cafe section where we will have a table displaying a sign with the Shut Up & Write logo. Writing is largely a solitary craft. Practicing with others in a community setting may be the thing you need to fire your own routine. We’ll meet on Wednesday evenings, starting the clock at 6:30, following a brief period of introductions. This is solid writing time and all inclusive. Any project is acceptable, be it fiction, non -fiction, work or homework assignment. All is welcome and will remain private to you. The market boasts a Starbucks, a full service bar and various affordable food options. Parking is plentiful, free Wifi is provided as well as outlets for charging your devices, though they are somewhat limited, so plan accordingly. Show up as early as you like, or stay late. This group tends to socialize some, both before and after the alloted time, but this is not mandatory to you. Feel free to come and go as you please and late arrivals are welcome. The cafe may be noisy on occasion so headphones/ earbuds are reccommended as you see fit. Please try to RSVP if possible so that we may grab enough seats for all—the venue can be busy at times. Feel free to message me privately wth any questions and/ or concerns you may have. Happy writing!
