CLH Book Group π What is Free Speech by Faramerz Dabhoiwala
June's Book: What Is Free Speech? The History of a Dangerous Idea by Faramerz Dabhoiwala
'Eye-opening, thought-provoking and deeply enjoyable, What is Free Speech? is a work of great profundity and brillianceβ William Dalrymple
A fresh and exciting approach to one of the most controversial subjects of our time
βFree Speech!β is a clarion call all over the world, yet what it means today is more contested than ever. Many cultures regard it as dangerous: in China, India, and across the Islamic world, unorthodox views about politics, sex, and religion are repressed and people are often punished for expressing them. Even in the western world, where it is held up as a core value, there is widespread discord and disagreement about what freedom of expression means. Amidst perennial imbalances of power, continually evolving cultural taboos, dramatic new technologies and a fast-changing global media landscape, where free speech comes from β and how we might think about it β are critical questions.
Through the lens of history, What Is Free Speech? shows us that freedom of speech is not an absolute from which societies and regimes have drifted or dissented at different times, but something more complicated and interesting.
Our modern conceptions of press and speech liberty, Dabhoiwala shows, were invented in Britain around 1700. The real history of freedom of expression is a story of countless fascinating men and women whose lives have shaped its principles and practices over the past 300 years β slaves and imperialists, poets and philosophers, plutocrats and revolutionaries. Ranging across Europe, North America and South Asia, and not neglecting other parts of the world, Dabhoiwala rejects celebratory platitudes about the past and present of free expression. Instead, his book explains how to think more deeply about free speech as a global as well as a local question β by tracing how we got into our current predicaments, showing that history complicates our contemporary presumptions, and suggesting fresh possibilities for the future.
The meeting starts at 7:30. Shortly after 7.30, we will break up into small groups. Those familiar with the CLH Book Group meeting know how this works: in each group we take turns introducing ourselves and giving our 1 minute thoughts on the book. It's important not to go over a minute and not to interrupt other people's minute so that everyone gets a chance to participate. After this first round, each group discusses for another 20 minutes or so.
We then shuffle the groups so as to talk to as many different people as possible and in the new groups repeat our introductions and 1 minute thoughts. We'll do this a couple of times before coming all together at the end in one last big group.
While we are very social and welcoming, the book group's primary focus is on discussing books. Feel free to turn up if you haven't managed to finish this month's book but note that the group works best when we have all read at least half of the book and are prepared to share our opinions.

\- What makes a person's basic purpose?
\- Practical drills to help you define your own basic purpose\.
Pen and paper provided,so - let's get stuck in!!
Using information taken from the book '*Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health*' by L. Ron Hubbard.
*Testimonial:*
*"Great seminar. I liked how you took us through step by step and we found our own basic purposes. It is a common basic purpose for all, I believe. I realised that the spiritual is more important to me than anything else. My purpose is to help others and the webinar validated things I do. I liked how the participants feel free to communicate their situations. My win was that I can use your method to help others find their basic purpose too. Thanks!" - VR*
Maria: I have worked at the Scientology Life Improvement Centre helping and coaching others for over 20 years.
I enjoy this a lot! I have access to tools that anyone can put to use in their life to make the positive improvements that they may be looking for.
I look forward to meeting you.
What can you do after the workshop?
We have various other free services that you could do - such as the free personality test. We also have a lot of Life Improvement Courses. These focus on specific areas of life to help 'unblock' them, put your actual abilities to use!

This is an RfR-wide event, not tied to any particular local chapter.
The Virtual Chapter Recovering From Religion support group will meet the the 1st Sunday of each month at 6 PM Central Time AS WELL AS at the 3rd Saturday of each month at 9 AM. This meeting will be held virtually via Zoom. Attendees are welcome to share, but may also decide to remain anonymous if they so choose.
The primary focus of a Recovering From Religion support group is to provide ongoing and personal support to individuals as they let go of their religious beliefs. This transitional period is an ongoing process that can result in a range of emotions, as well as a ripple effect of consequences throughout an individualβs life. As such, the support meetings are safe and anonymous places to express these doubts, fears, and experiences without biased feedback or proselytizing.
We are here to help each other through this journey.
There is no cost to attend this support group but, if you feel so inclined, donations can be made at www.recoveringfromreligion.org/donate
If you find you need to talk with someone before the meeting date, RfR has a hotline and online chat for that express purpose. Call (844) 368-2848 to speak with someone. Go to www.recoveringfromreligion.org and click on the green chat bubble in the lower left corner of the site to chat online.
If you are in need of professional help, we can offer the Secular Therapy Project to provide options to connect with a professional therapist. All therapists have been thoroughly vetted by our organization and offer only evidence-based and non-religious treatment. Connect with them at www.seculartherapy.org.
Like what RfR does? Why not volunteer! There are quite a few options. Head over to www.recoveringfromreligion.org/volunteer for more info.
Fitzrovia β βthe best place to live in Londonβ
**Fitzrovia β βthe best place to live in Londonβ**
This social walk, led by volunteer Robert Hall, is presented by Central London Humanists for everybody who is seeking a more assured path in life. Humanists believe we have just one life to be lived rationally and well, with compassion for others.
This event is a guided walk of +/- 2 hours pointing out places of interest. We will be walking 3.5 Km / 2.15 miles.
Find out why The Sunday Times named Fitzrovia the best place to live in London. Certainly many famous people have lived there given the plethora of Blue Plaques. There will be a few offbeat fascinating facts about possibly the grandest building we pass β The British Museum; but there is competition for the grandest building in Russell Square. There will also be βa great architectural featureβ β but not all agree. Weβll meet several βtrailblazing women who empowered women in male-dominated tradesβ. Youβll also find out why, despite being an atheist, your walk leader attends a church most Sundays.
**Date:** Saturday 20th June 2026
**Time:** 2 pm with a prompt departure at 2.15 pm
**Place:** Meet adjacent to exit from Tottenham Court Road underground station on south side of New Oxford Street. Exit 3 from the station.
It is strongly suggested you find us using: [https://what3words.com/movie.stem.bunk](https://what3words.com/movie.stem.bunk) or the What3Words app.
The nearest toilets are at various cafes or pubs in the surrounding area.
**Finishes:** About 4.15 pm at The Jack Horner, 234-236 Tottenham Court Road W1T 7QN. The pub is convenient for Goodge Street or Tottenham Court Road underground stations.
The walk is led by Robert β 07981963681. He can be contacted for further information but please note he wonβt
be able to respond to messages or calls after the walk has started.
**The formal bit:**
These walks are not suitable for dogs, sorry.
CLH events are 18+ unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
If you have signed up but find you can't attend, please change your RSVP on Meetup (itβs very easy to do) as soon as possible so that a more accurate number of attenders can be estimated.
You are responsible for your own actions and safety; there is no liability on the walk leader or CLH for anything that may happen on the walk.
You must be able to keep up with the walk leader at 4 Km/h (2.5 mph) for 5 Km (3 miles). It is participants' responsibility to safely cross roads.
Where appropriate, pedestrian controlled lights will be used and obeyed unless it is obvious that the whole group can cross safely.
When the group stops at a point of interest, please be mindful not to block pavements so members of the public can pass by safely.
Donβt forget this is the UK and it may rain at any time! The walk will go ahead whatever the weather unless conditions are dangerous so please bring clothing for all seasons.
**A donation of Β£3 to Central London Humanists would be appreciated.**
The majority of Central London Humanists events are free, but we welcome a Β£3 contribution per head. This helps towards the running and organising of events, as well as various admin expenses. Let's Discuss... Penal System
We all want 2 things from justice. We want the guilty caught and held, so the rest of us are safe. We also want to be sure we never crush someone who did nothing wrong. But we can't have both. Lean toward catching every criminal, and innocent people get swept up. Lean toward protecting the innocent, and some dangerous people slip through. Benjamin Franklin landed on one side: better a hundred guilty go free than one innocent suffer. The trouble starts when those hundred are real, and they're out.
What is prison actually for? to punish, to protect us, or to fix people?
When a sentence is short, is that mercy or is that punishment of the victim?
Which mistake can you live with: jailing the innocent, or freeing the guilty?
Can a court really say "innocent until proven guilty" after the public already decided?

Workshop: The Sacred Geometry of Sound
**This is a paid event, tickets available [here via eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/workshop-the-sacred-geometry-of-sound-tickets-1990188956744?aff=oddtdtcreator&_gl=1*6our0c*_up*MQ..*_ga*MTIzNzU4NTQxLjE3Nzk0ODUzNTk.*_ga_TQVES5V6SH*czE3Nzk0ODUzNTgkbzEkZzEkdDE3Nzk0ODYxMjUkajQxJGwwJGgw&keep_tld=true).**
**3-hour workshop will explore how the harmonious intervals of music serve as a model for universal structural principles.**
There is a long history of connection between music, mathematics, science and philosophy. From the ancient idea of the *music of the spheres* to the cosmological reflections of Kepler, Leibniz, Fludd, Newton and later thinkers such as Hans Kayser, sound and harmony have been understood not only as a musical phenomenon, but as a geometrical pattern inherent in nature. Myths across many cultures also express the concept that the universe was created by sound, and according to modern quantum field theory matter and energy fundamentally behave like vibrating waves.
The aim of this workshop is to share these ideas with a wider audience and popularize the interdisciplinary field called *harmonic research* or *harmonics*, in which the harmonious intervals of music serve as a model for universal structural principles.
**Content:**
* Fundamental harmonic principles in music and mathematics, including practical demonstrations on the monochord
* Harmonic proportions in nature and architecture
* The concept of harmony as a universal organizing principle and how we can apply this to our individual and collective lives
*
The workshop leader, Sabine Leitner, has an MA in music and completed the 2-year course 'Fundamental Research into Harmonics' at the Hans Kayser Institute at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (1990-1992). She also has an MA in Philosophy and an MA in Leadership Coaching. She is the director of the New Acropolis School of Philosophy in London.
This workshop has been organized to celebrate the International Day of Music and to promote the theme of 'Philosophy and Science'.
**Admission:** Β£50 (concessions Β£30)
There will be 2 breaks of 15 minutes (refreshments included in the price)

Practical Philosophy Club Meetup - London π¬π§
**ποΈ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no βofficialβ philosophy knowledge required! π
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community π
π **HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/B6fqS6HGujq8gb3a0kl5pS), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, itβs important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 14:00-14.15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the βofficial' start.
* 14:15-14:20 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 14:20-15:20 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the βjump-offβ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. Itβs not obligatory to answer them.
* 15:20-15:30 - We do a group conclusion of the things we discussed, and then we typically take a photo and go on our way :) If you don't want to be in the group photo, there's no pressure, it's just a way to close out the meeting. We occasionally have an unofficial social so the different groups can mingle afterwards too!
**π§§PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend, and we operate on donations.
If you'd like to donate to support our running costs, that helps keep our group self-sustaining. Donations are 100% voluntary, but your contribution is appreciated! QR codes to donate will be present.
Teaβs and coffees and are paid by the individual should they wish to have them.
**π WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
π£ βI feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting whatβs right and wrongβ - Ekam
π£ βI got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.β - Daniel
**π€ FAQ**
* What will we talk about? What's the topic?
The topic for the week is shared every week in the Whatsapp group before the session. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you donβt see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/B6fqS6HGujq8gb3a0kl5pS).
* Do I need to study or read anything to attend?
No preparation is necessary. This isnβt a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and weβll discuss it, but it's not required.
* Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* Is it mostly men that attend?
Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we donβt meet in any dark rooms.
* Can I come alone?
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* Can I be late?
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* Where do you meet?
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/B6fqS6HGujq8gb3a0kl5pS) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/).
π€**POLICY**
To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment.
**PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY - Making Philosophy Available To All.** β¨

Volunteer Opportunity
Open Shelter has teamed up again with Red White and Boom! Friday, July 3rd & we are looking for volunteers to run the eventβs alcohol booths. Proceeds from sales go to the Open Shelterβs organization.
There are two available shifts: 12-6p & 5-11p.
There will be an ipad-like device to process transactions in addition to cash. Everything will be in bottles or cans, so transactions should be very easy. Must be 21+.
There are multiple beverage stations along the Civic Center Bridge. The stations are covered and also have beverage trucks next to them, so volunteers can cool off in the trucks.
As far as parking, it is suggested those who are coming from the east use the Columbus Commons Garage, and those from the west use the Belle Street Garage.
Harry from the Open Shelter will be your contact.

Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup
Jimmy V's Grill & Pub in Grandview Heights. You are responsible for your own meal/drinks. We usually don't have any agenda other than eat, drink and talk. :) If the weather is nice we will be on the back patio, otherwise we are in the cigar room.
This group has been meeting every Tuesday evening for over a decade. Many attendees do not RSVP on meetup. Please don't let the small number here discourage you. Anyone/everyone is welcome to come. We'd love to have you join us.
COTA bus #5 comes to W. 5th and Wyandotte Rd. And it's a minute walk to the restaurant.

The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014.
Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
