Free Film and Theatre themed visit to the V&A with an Exhibition and Galleries
First, we will visit the exhibition Enthoven Unboxed: 100 Years of Collecting Performance. This exhibition marks 100 years since Gabrielle Enthoven founded the theatre and performance collection at the V&A, and the display explores an A–Z of themes to show how performance continues to entertain, provoke and inspire. There is a huge variety of items on display ranging from Elton John's glasses through modern concert posters through to late 19th century theatre themed artwork.
Next, we will walk through the museum to the Theatre and Performance Galleries. These galleries contain exciting theatre and performance collections, including rock and pop posters, theatre and ballet costumes, puppets, stage sets, Stars Wars costumes, and more.
We should expect to spend around 45 minutes at each of the two legs of the visit. If we finish early, there are numerous other galleries in the museum, and we can pick another one or two to visit depending on timings. I already have a note of what's on.
After the exhibition and galleries, the meetup ends, but it would be great if most if not all of us, stay for an entirely optional tea, drink, or snack in one of the many establishments in the area or the cafe at the V&A if that is still open. This will offer a great opportunity to relax and chat socially after what should be an interesting afternoon.
The exhibitions are free, but the usual £1.50 group maintenance fee applies and is non refundable. Please note that Meetup now adds about £0.60 to this as well. (If you pay cash on the day, it’s £2.50).
As always, you are participating at your own risk.
We would appreciate it if you changed your RSVP no more than 2 days before the event should you find you can no longer attend. No shows or cancellations on the day may result in you being removed from the group.

THE CONUNDRUM OF KENSINGTON
The allure is intoxicating, almost irresistible.
A succession of exquisitely beautiful townscapes, infinitely variable and constantly changing, yet somehow all coherent parts of a magnificent production, like a Mozart concerto.
Every view seems curated, polished and prepared. There’s no litter, no chewing gum, and no security guards! Yet this is traditional ‘public space’\*
This is the central area of Kensington\*\*, smallest yet most densely populated London borough, home to Grenfell Tower, and Kensington Palace.
It is simply great: no one would not want to live here. I promise you, by the time we reach ‘The Blackbird’ you will be ready to give up your Vow of Poverty, and move heaven and earth, to move here!
In fact, when our New Town Master Planners aspire to ‘urbanity’, in their new developments, Central Kensington might well be what they have in mind.
Part of the explanation is, of course, ‘money’. Oodles of it. Capitalism spends money to make money, and there’s ‘investment’ here: in every project, every house, every shop. It seems to have increased local authority spending too: York stone footways, in perfect condition, and most roadways recently resurfaced.
‘The Conundrum’ is, that this very high quality public realm seems to be unachievable elsewhere.
How has this come about? Do the best quality areas become unaffordable? Or does wealth lead to good quality?
It’s hard to believe, but in Kensington’s centre, from the High Street to Cromwell Road, and from Warwick Road to Queen’s Gate, there are, today, no socially rented homes *at all*, according to the official maps.
Today the borough has the lowest proportion of social housing in Inner London (22%), and some of its most expensive houses.
Across the whole borough, there are about 7K council-owned flats, plus the philanthropic providers' 12K more. But they are mostly in big estates in the southwest corner or far north: World’s End, Lancaster West and Dalgarno Gardens.
It was not always so. From 1726 there was a workhouse. In the 1860’s terraces were built in Blithfield\*\*\* Street for ‘the working classes’ made homeless by District Railway project, and some ‘workers’ cottages’ in Pembroke Place became ‘a notorious slum’, Wait ‘til you see them now.
And at the very edge of our area, in Warwick Road, Arup Associates more recently built 115 flats for the council: more than half are now ‘Right-to-Buy’ leaseholds.
To address ‘The Conundrum’, we’re going to meet at High Street Kensington Station, and walk through these, the oldest and most disorganised streets of the borough, from the ‘Old Court Suburb’\*\*\*\* nearest to Kensington Palace, heading south and west, following approximately the chronological path of the area’s development, from the earliest 2-storey terraces, to Victorian semi-detached villas, towering 7-storey stuccoed Italianate blocks, and late-Victorian and Edwardian mansion flats.
Now almost exclusively housing, the western parts of the area also once exhibited commercial, light industrial, and educational and healthcare activity, and along the way we’ll see the impact on the area of the the arrival of the District Railway in the 1870’s, the Cromwell Road extension just before WW2, and the West London Air Terminal in 1957.
Our walk leads directly to ‘The Blackbird‘ PH, opposite Earl’s Court Station, where our reserved table is being prepared.
Hope you can come!
Andy
\*could it be that residents get straight into their cars, and don’t walk along the streets dropping litter and gum?
\*\*= the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, created in 1965 from a merger of the Metropolitan Boroughs of Kensington, and its tiny neighbour, Chelsea.
\*\*\*sic
\*\*\*\*the development of Kensington Square in 1685, an urban space among the fields. It was actually started a few years *before* King William and Queen Mary moved their residence, for health reasons, to a mansion then called Nottingham House, now ‘Kensington Palace’.

FREE GUIDED TOUR: Italian Artists - Part III: Sculpture + Social
Gentle people,
It is my pleasure to invite you to Part III of Italian artists at the V&A, and a luscious afternoon of socialisation at the Grand Cafe at the V&A which is absolutely stunning. **Please note that there is no social before the tour, but only after.**
I will be giving a guided tour of the Italian artists to the members of LGBT Culture Lovers group, throughout this year in multiple parts. **There's no need to have attended previous sessions as I always recap.**
***In the third event of the series, we will be looking at the sculptures of quattrocento and cinquecento.*** Included are works by **Donatello, Andrea del Verrocchio**, **Michelangelo, Raphael**, & many others.
The tour will last around 60 minutes. **And here is the agenda:**
* 1:45pm: Meet at the Italian style entrance on Cromwell Gardens (not the brutalist one on Exhibition Road). We will wait for 15 minutes.
* 2pm: The tour starts right on the dot.
* 3pm: Social at the V&A Grand Cafe! (appreciate a drink😜)
I really encourage you to watch the two short videos in the further resources section, if you can.
I hope to see there.
J x

**About the museum**
The museum in north west London is dedicated to showcasing the work of the artist, illustrator, humorist and social commentator [William Heath Robinson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Heath_Robinson "William Heath Robinson") (1872–1944).

William Heath Robinson was born in London on 31 May 1872 into a family of artists and grew up in Finsbury Park. Both his grandfather, father and his two brothers worked as illustrators. He was an artist who drew whimsically elaborate machines to achieve simple objectives.
The visit should last about 1h 30mins and is self-guiding.

Monopoly Board 1 - South and East (Linear, 9 miles)
Due to popular demand (well 1 person!) we are repeating the Monopoly Board walks, but in one day. This is the morning walk starting at Waterloo Station and finishing at Kings Cross. For those keen to do the second walk, it is listed separately and will obviously start in the afternoon at Kings Cross.
For those who don’t know – Monopoly is a board game based around street and station names of London.
We will meet at 10AM under the clock at Waterloo station. Our first destination is Lambeth North – which apparently is “GO” on the Monopoly board. There is then a relatively long walk to the Old Kent Road before we head back into town to cross the iconic Tower Bridge. We stop for a quick break by some old remains of the original London Wall. We then tick off Vine Street, Fenchurch Street station and Whitechapel before we head up through Brick Lane to Spitalfields Market. Following this, we go across to Liverpool Street Station and Fleet Street before heading up to Angel and Pentonville Road. Finally, we head over to our final stop at Kings Cross Station. We will have only covered roughly a 3rd of the locations – but this is because a lot of them are clustered over in West London – we pick these up in the afternoon!
We will distribute a crib sheet before as well so everybody can tick off as we progress across the day. We will in effect be playing Monopoly Bingo!
This is a **no dog walk.**
Please note that **there is a £2 payment required for non-Ramblers members** to help cover our Meetup costs. **Please help the walk leader by bringing the exact change.**
Members of the Ramblers Association are welcome on any of our walks, but we would still encourage you to RSVP on Meetup. This will give our volunteer walk leaders an idea of how many are attending, and also to keep the numbers manageable. If, on the day of the walk, you are still on the waiting list and a Ramblers member, you can attend just let the walk leader know you are coming by adding a comment 'Coming as a Rambler'. You will find the start location via our website Our Walks ([westkentwalkinggroup.org.uk](http://westkentwalkinggroup.org.uk/)).

Monopoly Board 2 - North and West (Linear, 7 miles)
This is the second part of our walk where we go to each named location on the Monopoly Board. We will have covered the South and East locations in the morning. There is no obligation to have done the morning walk
We will meet at 14.30pm outside of the front entrance to Kings Cross station – as you look out from the station we will be to the left of the Pret-a-Manger. Our first destination we can literally see from the start point – Euston Road! We then have quite a long walk – past the British Library, The Wellcome Collection, Euston Station (bizarrely not on the Monopoly board), The Royal Academy of Music, Madame Tussauds and the statue of Sherlock Holmes before heading up to Marylebone station where we will have a brief toilet and drink stop.
We then drop down via Mayfair to Park Lane. We then walk along Oxford Street – ticking off at speed – Bond Street, Great Marlborough Street, Piccadilly, Pall Mall and Coventry Street. Then across to Leicester Square, through Covent Garden to Bow Street, back along The Strand to finish at the iconic Trafalgar Square – where we can see Northumberland Avenue and Whitehall to complete our list!
Because we will be going through very busy parts of central London **this is a no dog walk**.
Please note that there is a £2 payment required for non-Ramblers members to help cover our Meetup costs. Please help the walk leader by bringing the exact change.

Contra dance with Big Scioty on March 7 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Frank Buschelmann**
**Band: The Rosenthorns**
**Big Scioty Contra Dance**
**temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/)
Please bring your own refillable water bottle. Snacks to share are always welcome!
