Hug your Mother (Earth): Rock Creek/Takoma Park Loop - E-bike Lovers
[https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46073614](https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46073614) 18.4 miles. Toilets are at the beginning, middle, and end of the trail. **Picnic stop will be in Meadowbrook Local Park at 12.5 miles.** Celebrate (Mother) Earth Day! This route was originally conceived as part of the Takoma Park Earth Day celebration in April 2024. We are happy to ride again for this year's Celebration. We will e-bike from Peirce Mill in Rock Creek Park through Takoma Park, and then on to the Sligo Creek Trail. From Sligo Creek we head west past Holy Cross Hospital and through the Forest Glen neighborhood. We then turn south on to Rock Creek Trail. Earth Day Festivities with occur in Sligo Creek Stream Valley Park, approximately 6 miles into the ride. Face painting, snow cones, art activities and exhibits promoting a variety of environmental and sustainability causes will be there! The picnic stop is at Meadowbrook Local Park, 12.5 miles into the ride. **Please charge your batteries. The ride is on asphalt and often flat but we will encounter some hills. As usual, non-assisted bikers are most welcome.** Bring snacks, lunch and plenty of water. Pump tires, check brakes and charge your battery. Consider packing a spare tire tube. Check weather and dress appropriately. As always, this is a self-guided event. **We recommend you download the Ride with GPS route.** [https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46073614](https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46073614) The group stops a few times for slower riders to catch up. The distance will be 18.4 miles or shorter any time you are fully satisfied with biking for the day. For the E-bike Lovers group to be successful, we need to grow our membership carefully. Please feel free to invite other E-bike lovers, spread the word, and let's have fun. **Free Ride With GPS for E-Bike Lovers** Membership of the Ride With GPS E-bike Lovers club is now free as www.ebikelovers.com is generating sufficient income from ads to cover the costs. Circlesinging Together ** Elwood Smith Community Center, Rockville **
We are meeting in person at Elwood Smith Community Center, Rockville! \*\*\* The community-singing event where where everything's made up and the point โ€” to sing for our lives โ€” matters. Our leaders will teach you parts to sing for spontaneously-composed choral pieces. We play a variety of listening/music/singing games, and create safe opportunities for participants to improvise as little or as much as they might like. Good for all skill levels, shower-singers to seasoned pros, no sheet-music-reading required. \*\*\* We usually meet on the second Sunday of the month, and will continue to meet in-person as long as it makes sense. We encourage and provide masks. We will also plan on continuing our Zoom circles from time to time. So please check the day before/day of the meetup each month to confirm date & details. Handy Bikes | Sunday Casual Ride | Every-other-week
Handy Bikes | Sunday Casual Ride | Every-other-week
Similar to our "Beginner Ride", a casual, on-road-avoiding, cycle-path-winding, beginner friendly, group ride. The ride will be led by Maya and Angie, who have a combined 50 years of cycling experience. This is a no drop ride with an average speed of 7- 12 mph. Please bring a helmet, lights, a snack, hydration and wear appropriate clothing for cooler weather (cotton is not your friend in cooler temps and we will be riding in the dark). The ride can be tailored to the skills that attendees want to master, i.e- drinking from water bottle while riding, making tight turns, riding in a small group and cycling etiquette. We will be riding mainly on trails, streets as minimally as possible, and sidewalks only when necessary. This ride is perfect for someone who hasn't ridden in a while and wants to get some easy miles on the saddle; not just for newbies. If you have not ridden your bike in several weeks, months or years, please have a safety check done before the day of the ride. We are just here to have fun.

Quads & Doubles Volleyball - Competitive BB+/A
Quads & Doubles Volleyball - Competitive BB+/A
Let's get together to play some competitive quads and doubles volleyball. **COST**: FREE **Court Type**: Outdoor grass **Minimum Skill Requirements**: BB+ (click [here](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PojSi4qdlRsv1msCHhvpQ43iDc4FfzQwpWCc3kafVMY/mobilebasic) for details) Attention: 1. This event is **NOT on a first come-first serve** basis and players with higher skill level and players who can bring a net/ball will get priority over others on the wait list. 2. Since skill levels are **self-reported**, some new attendees may not meet the expected level. For doubles, we encourage you to choose a partner you can enjoy the game with, and since this a competitive event, it is okay if you make a strong team and win all the games. 3. Each person must help set up and take down one net, leaving some nets unset for latecomers. 4. Please answer all questions, so it's helpful for us to organize the event. **Smiley Social documents:** 1. Introductory Clinic
Introductory Clinic
*Location Change * Since Freedom Plaza is under construction, we will meet at the plaza in front of The International Trade Center near the National Children's Museum (on Pennsylvania Ave). We'll begin with going over a few drills (varies week to week). The skills we drill will be for the first 30 minutes. For the second half, we will casually skate down the bike lanes on Pennsylvania Avenue from the plaza to the U.S.Capitol and stop at 3rd St. and then skate back the same route. This route is about 2 miles in total and is perfect for those who are new to skating in the city but feel comfortable on skates in a parking lot or roller rink. This is also great if you wish to start with shorter routes to increase your physical fitness or stamina for some of the other routes. This is an excellent opportunity to prepare to skate with others on the road. You will also get to meet skaters who will arrive for the Intermediate and Advanced skate routes following the introductory skate. This is great training to feel prepared for the Tuesday Night and Friday Night Skate! Route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=7653831 Inline skates (rollerblades), roller skates (quads), bicycles, unicycles, skateboards, longboards and other similar modes of transportation are welcome to join. Helmet and pads are required. Skate at your own risk.
Ocho de Bastos
Ocho de Bastos
Ocho de Bastos first event this year is at the art blooms festival at Mosaic District in Virginia. I know several members of our group, also known as groupies, will not mind crossing the river. I am including a map to help us find the stage. Bring a chair in case you need to pause from dancing. There will be free shuttle buses from the Dunn Loring metro station.
Anacostia River Trail: Bladensburg Waterfront to The Wharf and Back
Anacostia River Trail: Bladensburg Waterfront to The Wharf and Back
**\*\*Check back to see if the date or start time has changed. This ride will be postponed (possibly replaced with another ride) if the chance of rain is above 49%, or wind speed or wind gusts are above 15 mph (per Accuweather) \*\*** **TRAIN OR BUS STOPS** College Park Station Hyattsville Station Riverdale Station **PARKING ADDRESS** Bladensburg Waterfront Park 4601 Annapolis Rd, Bladensburg, MD (map link) Bladensburg Waterfront Park is located right where Bladensburg Rd becomes Annapoli ยท Washington, DC **PARKING AND MEETUP SPOT** There is a plenty of parking. Park anywhere, then bike toward the visitor center and caboose. Meet us between the train caboose and bike racks. After check-in, weโ€™ll do an icebreaker question. **BIKE ROUTE SUMMARY** This route is hairpin shaped because weโ€™ll return back on the north side of the river for a couple miles before taking a bridge back to the other side. The trail will wind behind the visitor center and go along the river towards DC. (If anyone wants to take a side trail to see the Kenilworth Gardens, let us know so we can show you the entry point). We hug the river at the beginning and pass it again at the last 3 miles down. We pass by Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, go through fields, parks, a train track overpass bridge, and the Anacostia River Park - where we may start to see boats and yachts on the river. We'll take a couple of stops to regroup on the way. At the end of the Anacostia River Park, weโ€™ll go leftwards towards the new Frederick Douglass Bridge which may tempt you to take some photos. After crossing, weโ€™ll pass through the Audi Arena and turn left to take a break at the Titanic Memorial at the waterfront. Weโ€™ll then go to the Wharf which will require dismounting our bikes once we get to the busier areas. **RETURN** Weโ€™ll head up on the west side. Go slowly through The Yards district and enjoy the landscape, sculpture art, river views etc. Right after the Navy Yards district boardwalk โ€”-**be aware of the large pavers in front of the Navy Yard** (after crossing the narrow inlet bridge) โ€” many pavers have wide, deep gaps in between them so bike tires can get stuck while riding, causing a flip or fall. Halfway up, weโ€™ll take Benning Rd bridge across to the east side, then turn right and right again to get back to Bladensburg Waterfront Park. **TYPE OF BIKE:** Any kind of bike frame and tires. Ensure it is the correct frame size for your height so you can get maximum output. Participants are responsible for ensuring their bike tires, brakes, and chain are in good condition and they have a spare tire on hand. Organizers can try to help but aren't responsible for everyone's bike conditions. **SKILL LEVEL:** All levels can enjoy this trail. It only has about three short inclines. **PACE:** Itโ€™s up to you. HOWEVER: The event organizers have fit legs (avg. 10-18 mph). And some of us like to do a cardio workout at some point. We make stops at tricky points on the trail and /or to regroup every 2-4 miles. Since paved trails can sometimes be crowded, we donโ€™t have expectations of being able to go very fast. ยท If you prefer a **faster pace** than the lead riders, you can make stops to wait for them to catch up. ยท If youโ€™re **not sure what your avg. speed** is, be prepared to use a nav app to ride solo in case you donโ€™t catch up to us at our stops. **DISTANCE OPTIONS** Participants can choose to return at any point. These are just suggestions. **OPTION A:** Bike about three miles to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, then return **OPTION B:** Bike about 8 miles to the Anacostia Park, then return. **OPTION C:** Bike \~ 9.6 miles to The Wharf, DC and back. The event organizers plan to do this route. OPTIONAL ONE HOUR BREAK: Weโ€™ll take a break to explore the Wharf boardwalk piers, shops, fountain areas, and to eat/drink, rest, and socialize. (Organizers will eat at Falafel Inc. They have a $6 falafel salad bowl. All are welcome to join us or go their own way for the break.) **Meet at 1:00 at [location to TBD] to head back.** **OPTION D:** Bike option C then add more mileage by biking the NW Branch Trail , and then connecting to one of the other local trails. **BATHROOMS** Bathrooms available at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Anacostia Park, and at The Wharf Boardwalk area, as well as the Navy Yard area where weโ€™ll be stopping to enjoy river views. **BIKE RENTALS** Rentals are available at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park visitor center. You can reserve online before the date. **BIKE REPAIR** Bike repair options are at the visitor center and at The Wharf boardwalk in DC **RECOMMENDATIONS** **Bring:** Water bottles, snacks, biking gloves, bike bell, bike lock, helmet visor, sunglasses, bike tube, pump, patch, first aid kit, mobile phone with nav app installed (e.g. Google maps, we use RidewithGPS). If you get leg cramps during or after a ride, take electrolytes before and during your ride (or add salt and magnesium to your water). A change of clothes for your ride home or a car seat cover to absorb sweat. Clothing: Wear biking gloves and durable clothing so that if you do fall, your skin is protected. Avoid wearing all black, all grey, all dark brown, or all dark blue, which blends in with pavement, especially while riding through a shady segment. Consider wearing something lighter to help others notice you. **REQUIREMENTS** **Participants must wear tightly secured helmets when on their bike.** **Be proactive to avoid a fall/crash and minimize injury:** ยท Keep a distance between yourself and other bikers. If the biker ahead of you suddenly stops, you should be able to avoid hitting them. ยท Donโ€™t make stops on the trail. Pull over to the side and use hand gestures to let people know youโ€™re slowing down to make a stop. ยท Yelling out โ€œPassing on your leftโ€ and/or ringing a bike bell as you approach people ahead of you, so they donโ€™t inadvertently move in your line of travel. ยท Slowing down to wait, rather than speeding up when trying to pass people at the same time walkers/bikers are approaching you from the opposite direction. ยท Avoid potholes and debris and slow down when approaching bumps ยท When approaching road crossings and iffy situations, triple-check before crossing and donโ€™t let yourself be distracted by talking, etc. ยท Ensure your helmet is tightly secured so that it wonโ€™t move if you hit the ground. **MEETUP POLICIES** Participants should understand that biking is an inherently dangerous activity, and an accident could happen at any time. **Participation is at your own risk**. An RSVP of โ€œYesโ€ to an event is your digital signature acknowledging that you have read, understood, and agree with Meetupโ€™s and MD Rail Trail Bikingโ€™s policies, esp. section 6 โ€œReleaseโ€ and section 8.2 โ€ Limitation of Liability,โ€ found at [https://www.meetup.com/terms/](https://www.meetup.com/terms/)

While we do aim to play seriously and challenge ourselves, the focus is more on growth and enjoyment than simply winning at all costs. Thatโ€™s why the title doesnโ€™t include โ€œcompetitiveโ€ or โ€œsocialโ€โ€”we want a healthy mix of both. We do expect a mindset geared toward learning and getting better over time. That said, this event isnโ€™t intended for total beginners; an understanding of the game is expected so that everyone can contribute to meaningful and engaging matches. The host holds the right to remove you from the game if they believe that you are at a C level(absolute beginner). if you can't pass to the setter for example, you are a beginner. **Skill Level:** 1. **If you want to know your level, please see the link below:** [Smiley Social Volleyball Levels](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PojSi4qdlRsv1msCHhvpQ43iDc4FfzQwpWCc3kafVMY/edit) **YouTube:** The games may be recorded and uploaded to our channel here: Let the host know if you have an issue with this. [Youtube](https://www.youtube.com/@mp02626) **ATTENDANCE:** **Player Selection:** Regulars > Your Vibe > Skills > \*Flaky-ratio (your attendance ratio) > New Members \*If you have attended 3 events and dropped 6, you may or may not be invited. Anyone with a Flaky-ratio -.50 or lower. If you have a recent no-show, you may not be invited. The host takes attendance very seriously. Take Control Of Your Life, Freedom From Negative Thoughts & Irrational Emotions
Take Control Of Your Life, Freedom From Negative Thoughts & Irrational Emotions
Feeling down? Sometimes depressed? Can't focus? Negativity & stress? Recent losses? Creativity in career and personal life hindered by mental blocks? Sometimes we never fully recover from traumatic experiences. Whether it was yesterday, last week or a year ago, traumatic experiences - a loss of a loved one, losing a job, a breakup - can leave you scarred. You talk about it and feel a little better, but it never goes away. After you hang up the phone, it's still there; the sadness, the cloud, the over-thinking, the worry, the guilt. You try to focus, but you're blocked. You try to look forward into new experiences, new relationships but a cloud is hanging over you, casting a shadow on what you once considered a bright, cheerful future. What happened to your courage? Your strength of character? You're 'why not' attitude? Whoever said 'time heals' must have had a special time machine, because after weeks, months, years, you're wondering - when exactly does that kick in? Sometimes it seems like drinking or drugs are the way to go. But they wear off, and now the problem is still there with added side effects from the drugs. At this free local Meetup event we will talk about: * What causes grief, anxiety and depression to become chronic. * Is it possible to regain your joy and happiness even after traumatic experiences? * How to break away from negativity and focus on the future * What are the steps to take to get control of your mind and your emotions? Learn about a safe, gentle, do-it-yourself counseling that can be done in the comfort of your own home. Let's explore safe, effective solutions for healing from traumatic experiences. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to the event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is sponsored by the Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Center.
