Sunday Bus: Wombelano Falls / Andrew Hill - 12.5km and 18km - 22 Mar
Sunday Bus: Wombelano Falls / Andrew Hill - 12.5km and 18km - 22 Mar
**WALK DESCRIPTION:** Both groups start at the same point at the corner of Extons and Captains Creek Roads. The initial route followed will be basically the same, however, the easier group will do a 1.5km circuit to view the Wombelano Falls. (The Wombelano Falls loop is a lovely walking circuit but the falls are not specular unless there has been heavy rain.) From the junction with the Wombelano Falls loop both groups will continue along the Easement Track until the Powerline Track is reached. This track is a pleasant downhill track which affords great views. Only a short section of this track is exposed. Most is shaded. Both groups will continue until Island Creek Picnic Area is reached. There is a small creek crossing before this point that at least one leader got her feet wet but it is not major. Once reaching the Island Creek Picnic Area the two walks diverge, with the Easy/Medium group following the lovely tree ferned track along Island Creek to the Gums Camp and the awaiting bus. The Medium walk will do a more challenging uphill route to Andrew Hill with a 320m climb through tree-lined tracks before descending to the Gums. These are a lovely walks, close to Melbourne, which highlight so many enjoyable aspects of the bush on our doorstep. A reminder to bring a change of footwear for the trip back, because dirty boots leave marks on the bus that our club pays to have cleaned. Please note that at this time of year there is always a possibility of encountering snakes, and appropriate leg covering is recommended. As the weather can be warm at this time of year, **please carry at least 2 litres of water.** . **DISTANCE(S):** 12.5km and 18km . **TOTAL ASCENT(S):** 250m Rise and 520m Rise . **GRADINGS:** Easy/Medium and Medium **Easy/Medium (E/M):** More consistent walking, mostly on tracks or in open country, but with some significant hills, probably some stretches of light scrub. Possibility of some rock hopping. Distances up to 19km but may be much shorter depending on the difficulty of the terrain. Reasonable lunch and rest stops. **Medium (M):** Consistent walking on tracks or in open bushland, usually with patches of thicker scrub, several moderate climbs, and/or rock hopping. Distances up to about 22kms with reasonable rest stops. A good level of fitness and walking experience is required. **.** **PLEASE NOTE:** Your RSVP on MeetUp lets us know who may be interested but does not add you to the booking list. To register and pay for the walk you must visit our clubrooms (details below). . **HOW TO BOOK AND PAY:** (a) Visit the Melbourne Bushwalkers' clubrooms on either of the two Wednesday evenings before the walk, speak to the leader and, if it is agreed to walk, make a payment to secure your place on the bus. (b) To cancel a Sunday Walk booking before 4pm on the Thursday before the walk, send a note to sunday@mbw.org.au. A credit will be issued for a future walk. (c) To cancel a Sunday Walk booking after 4pm on the Thursday before the walk contact the walk leader direct. You should be given the walk leader contact details at the time of booking. (d) The costs for the walk are 30 bus fare plus 10 visitor fee if you are not a paid-up Member of Melbourne Bushwalkers. . **OUR CLUBROOMS:** Our clubrooms are located at The Mission to Seafarers Victoria, 717 Flinders Street, Docklands. We are open Wednesday nights 6:30pm - 8.00pm. . **CONTACT US:** To contact us regarding this walk send an email to sunday@mbw.org.au. We do not regularly check the MeetUp site for messages and the above address will get a faster response. **.** **CAN I MEET AT THE START OF THE WALK?** No! Since Sunday Bus walks are generally walks starting and finishing at two widely separated locations we do not accept walkers meeting at the start of the walk. There is no way for them to get back to their transport. We can arrange for a pick-up and drop-off at a designated location along the route closer to Melbourne, however, the full bus fee is still payable since a seat has to be kept free on the bus. . **IMPORTANT TO KNOW:** Registration (membership) on Meetup is not the same as paid-up Membership of MBW. To become a paid-up Member with online booking and other benefits see: [https://mbw.org.au/MBW_membership.php](https://mbw.org.au/MBW_membership.php) . **WHAT TO BRING:** A day pack containing: \ *Lunch, a morning and afternoon snack. \* Full water bottle - we recommend 2 litres, more in warmer weather. \ *An unlined waterproof jacket or cape, waterproof over-trousers (if your jacket is short). \* Whistle, pencil and paper. \ *Personal and first aid items, including sun screen, lip screen, toilet paper, identification, Club green Health Card, some money etc. Note: The leader always carries a first aid kit. \* A change of footwear for the trip back. . **DO YOU HAVE COMPREHENSIVE AMBULANCE COVER?** The Club strongly recommends that all participants have comprehensive personal ambulance cover. . **MORE DETAILS:** The visit to the clubrooms on a Wednesday before a walk is to cover three things: (a) Provide background on the club and ensure all walkers are familiar with the safety and courtesy guidelines we adopt; (b) Meet with the leader of the walk who will be in the clubrooms to discuss any special features of the walk and ensure that adequate gear and fitness requirements are met. (c) Sign an Acknowledgement of Risk form and pay the visitor fee (10) and bus fee (30) to reserve a seat on the bus. No booking is accepted until the payment is received. . **DAY WALKS BY BUS** with Melbourne Bushwalkers: [https://mbw.org.au/mbw_activities/walks/MBW_bus_walks.php](https://mbw.org.au/mbw_activities/walks/MBW_bus_walks.php)

Quiet Study & Reading Session at State Library Victoria
Quiet Study & Reading Session at State Library Victoria
Join us for a relaxed study and reading session at State Library Victoria. This is a low-pressure meetup for anyone who wants to spend a few focused hours studying, reading, learning something new, or working through an online course in a quiet and motivating environment. I’m planning to start the free online course [Astronomy with an online telescope](https://www.open.edu/openlearn/science-maths-technology/astronomy/astronomy-online-telescope/content-section-overview) for fun. It introduces the night sky, telescopes, and astronomical observations using an online robotic telescope. You’re welcome to do the same course, or anything else you’d like to quietly work on. This is not a formal class or teaching session. It’s more of a casual co-study / co-reading meetup where we can share a table, stay focused, and take breaks together. There’s no pressure to be social the whole time, but we can chat during breaks, lunch, or dinner afterwards. You can leave whenever you like, and you’re also welcome to arrive later. Just note that if you arrive later, you may not be able to get a seat right next to the group. **Links** Meetup start point: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/MxygdS6FBotcuo5Q9](https://maps.app.goo.gl/MxygdS6FBotcuo5Q9) **Rough timeline** * 9:45am – Meet at St George and the Dragon Statue * 10:00am – Head inside State Library Victoria and find seats * 10:00am–12:30pm – Study / read / work quietly * Around 12:30pm – Optional lunch nearby * After lunch – Continue studying / reading if people want to * 6:00pm – State Library closes * After 6:00pm – Optional dinner nearby **What to bring** * Laptop, tablet, book, notebook, or study materials * Charger / power bank if needed * Headphones if you like working with music or focus sounds * Water bottle * Anything else you need for a quiet study session **Important notes** Please arrive around 9:45am so we can say hello before heading inside when the library opens. This will be a quiet meetup, so we’ll keep socialising mainly to breaks, lunch, and optional dinner afterwards. Seats are not guaranteed, especially if the library is busy. We’ll do our best to find space together, but people arriving later may need to sit nearby rather than directly with the group. You’re welcome to leave early or stay only for part of the day. **Other info** * Optional lunch will be around 12:30pm. * Optional dinner will be after the library closes at 6:00pm.

Mason falls to Mount Sugarloaf Summit loop GR3 Mod 15km 581 elevation max
This is a stunning and rewarding loop walk take us into the heart of **Kinglake National Park**, taking in the dramatic **Masons Falls,** combining powerful scenery, bushfire‑regeneration landscapes, and rewarding viewpoints. We begin by heading toward the impressive **Masons Falls**, a wide cascade dropping into a rugged, forested gorge. The **viewing platform** sits safely above the cliffs, giving you a clear look at the falls, the rock walls, and the deep valley carved below. The falls are especially dramatic this time of year. The trail follows a mix of ridge lines, forest tracks, and well‑formed paths, offering a powerful look at bushfire recovery and the resilience of Mountain Ash, Stringybark, and Messmate forests. Expect a solid, steady walk with some short steep sections. with mostly manageable gradiants and is not overly technical. Along the way, we may see: \*Fern gullies * Regenerating eucalypt forest \*Rocky outcrops * Wildflowers (seasonal) \*Parrots, honeyeaters, wrens, and the distinctive calls of Bell Miners As we approach the **Mt Sugarloaf summit area**, the track opens to broader views across rolling hills, distant ranges, and the vast expanse of the national park. It’s a great spot to pause and take in the contrast between regrowth and untouched forest before taking the gentler descent down along another well formed track that completes our loop to the starting point ## 🌿 Flora & Fauna **Flora:** Mountain Ash, Stringybark, Messmate **Fauna:** Parrots, Bell Miners, Honeyeaters, Wrens šŸ“ Distance & Difficulty **Quality of track** Clear and well formed **Gradient** Short steep hills **Signage** Directional signs along the way **Infrastructure** Generally useful facilities BBQ, Toilet, fenced cliffs and seats, Toilet , no drinking water **AGW Grade** 3 **Difficulty** Moderate (Some bushwalking experience required/ Reasonable Fitness) **Max elevation** 581m NOTE: * **Water:**\* No drinking water available — bring your own\* \***Dogs:** Not permitted (National Park) \*\*\*Park Info: \*\*Parks Victoria — 13 19 63 ## šŸŽ’ What to Bring \*3–4 L of water * Snacks or lunch \*Comfortable hiking shoes * Hiking Poles \*Weather‑appropriate clothing (layers are ideal for this time of year) * Sunscreen / hat \*Personal items you need ## 🌦 Weather & Safety We walk in most conditions unless they become unsafe. There is music that sounds beautiful. And there is music that has lived through history. A few things to know before concert [Harmony Bridge: Ukraine–Australia. That is why composers entrusted it with their most personal thoughts. Ukrainian chamber music was often created in difficult times — becoming a way to preserve what could not be spoken aloud. Some of the melodies you will hear were written over a century ago, yet they still resonate as if they were created today. A quartet is always a conversation. Between instruments. Hike Blendon Woods Metro Park
Hike Blendon Woods Metro Park
Hi ladies. We will meet in front of the Nature Center and head to the two Observation decks. We will then hike Hickory Ridge, Ripple Rock, Overlook and Sugarbush trails to get approximately four miles total distance. We will walk approximately a 18 minute mile pace. Please wear appropriate hiking shoes.
Hike Chestnut Ridge
Hike Chestnut Ridge
We will hike the Ridge Trail and Meadows Trail twice, for a total of 3.8 miles. There are some pretty good inclines so plan on getting a cardio workout :). This is a loop which is pretty easy to follow; thus faster walkers can take the lead and the rest (like me) will bring up the rear at a slightly slower pace. You could also just do the loop once for 1.9 miles. No one left behind. Optional lunch to follow in Canal Winchester. I'm working through the metro parks - this is the third one!
Hike Char-Mar Ridge Park
Hike Char-Mar Ridge Park
This is a small but pretty park with a 1.7-mile loop. We will walk it 2 times. It goes along a ridge and has moderate elevation changes.

COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process. Fast track • Arrange a time to shadow a COUNT volunteer. Call Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558 (cell). • Show up and try it out. • Complete application, etc. later. Normal process • Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/). • Attend orientation in advance. • At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility. • Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM. • Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895). The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014. Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
