The human habit of indulging or investing devotion, time and attention to something external is as old as civilisation. We may think that its slowly disappearing, but when observed carefully, its just changing forms. The discussion this time would be about how humanity's investment of time and attention rapidly shifted from gods to screens, from creation and contemplation to mindless consumption. Technology didn't replace religion, it became one. Instead of sacrificing a lamb, goat, horse or whatever, you sacrifice your time and sanity.
